Good interview, Angles is a great city for relaxation, it has some fantastic restaurants and lots of good hotels, it’s an R&R for the single person, I visited Clark and was amazed that it was more developed, as you drive around the whole area is beautiful

Great Interview !!! This couple did it right. Retire from the Military then get a job and save money to pay cash for a house and move to the Philippines and live like a King!! They should be teaching this philosophy in high schools !!!
Thanks Doug, like you mentioned it is all about proper planning and saving. Live within your means, stop worrying about having best car /house etc. Do not work yourself to death and not get a good amount of retirement years
@@FOCUSonASIA13 I did OK myself but wish I would have done the 20 year military retirement. I did my 4 years and got out. Hindsight is not always friendly. But I pursued my passions and still have a filipina by my side making me happy !!

Glad you had J.R. on. I was following his channel before, didn't know he started it back up. Enjoy his talks! I was also stationed at Clark AB from 86 to 91. We worked different career fields so I didn't know him at the time. I plan on retiring part time in a couple of years there at Angeles with my Filipina wife who I met and married there 33 years ago this month. Enjoy your videos especially of the Philippines. We are in South Carolina for 6-8 more months, but at least starting in Mexico ( San Cristobal de las Casas ).

I like John’s philosophy of transferring a lump sum for the whole year that includes an emergency fund and a whole year‘s budget to avoid potential financial setbacks that might occur if the ATMs are down.
All those gentlemen's costs as far as tax are the same as 20 years ago in Manila. I used to live in the same area he did and the rents were low apartments nice marble floor ect. Thanks for the memories.

Yup this is really a great interview. Thanks for your service JR. Truthful answers and no BS. You can retire in the Philippines for less and live a better life. I had my house built in a gated village for less than what JR paid or spent on his house. I have no mortgage payment or loans.

Ah yes, I do miss the pizza and a good steak and cheese. We do have a great pizza place here in Angeles City called Biggies but steak and cheese I have to make myself
My cousin used to live just behind the walls of Clark Airbase. My cousins were there during the volcano eruption and succeeding downpour of ash. My cousin's ex-husband was an airplane mechanic in the base. Last time I heard his working in Singapore. Night life in Angeles City, memories I cannot forget even after 30 years. The thing I will not forget a woman asked me "what is a minister's kid doing here late hours?".

Thank you for your valued service from one vet to another- me, Navy & Army! If I could do it again, it would of been AF! Great luck on your future & your future one story built home! All my fiancee2wife Charlie in the Philippines wants is a small one story flat house with no stairs! Unfortunately, I had 3 strokes & 5 heart attacks in South Florida-2017-2018( Did not stop me from writing our 1st book) & simply want a more stress free & cheaper life in the Phils instead of staying in the USA any longer for most of the reasons you stated here! You did a great job John with that fabulous house! Wish only the best to you and your wife! I have to check out your channel below as well! As we say: Hooyah & Hua to you two & Dan too! LOL ! Hopefully I might retire in the Philippines for good and we still have our ancestral home there. I retired at 60 years old and spend my time traveling to other countries twice a year.

I just moved from Mabalacat to Friendship. I used to live walking distance to Jumbo Jenra and the bus terminal. Great area. And I'm also retired Air Force.
I think that's a good choice. Friendship area is less crowded compared to the Dau area.

Dan, when you were talking about going out to eat, you said under your breath something like "yea, $10 entrees", referring to the US. I got two sandwiches last night from a shop in southwest Michigan including a fee for extra avocado. Total was $27! I can't wait to retire in the Philippines!

Smart move JR. I love my pension and I tried to tell my friends to join the military or find something out there with a pension many years back but they refused to listen............they're all still working today while I do what I want 🤠
Yessir, not too many pensions left in US, except military and other Govt. work . May not get paid as much as civilian side but that pension kicking in when you are still young is a great thing to have. With 59.5 year old rule for 401K and IRAs, the pension helps out in the mean-time

Great interview! This guy represents my experience a lot better than those who don't make much in Social Security and have to settle for something less. I wouldn't consider living anywhere less than what John has here. If I could get a house like that even for $150k, I might consider living there.
I actually visited Angeles City because my brother was stationed at Clark (a long time ago) so I had to see what it looked like. I had to go to Walking Street, of course, and happened upon a couple guys drinking beer, an American and a Canadian. They invited me to join them and one of the guys and I went to a local restaurant. You can't beat the Philippines for friendly people.

@Itznun Yabizness you can buy a house but you can't own the land it sits on. But yes if you are married to a Filipino they essentially can "own the land" and you and the spouse own the home together as well.

Cebu can be crowded but you may already know that, renting condo and exploring is a wise choice. FInd the ideal location for you then bed down. You will naturally spend more your first few months in the Philippines and then your budget will adjust as your learn to navigate expenses here.

Loaded with solar. 42$ fiber, 10$ water bill and 100$ electric, and we run AC all day everyday.
That's my expense every month.
HOA is 100$ a year. Property tax is 200$ year.

Nice Thomaso, just curious of your area you live, property tax seems high but maybe you have a very large property. Our lot is small 120 sqm so tax is only 50 a year
@@FOCUSonASIA13 I'm in Angeles, so it's higher tax than other areas, also gated community. I have around 200sqm lot and the house is 4br, 3bath.
Warrior did it right. He also has tricare international for healthcare…and maybe the VA. Love their house (why not buy if he’s been married for years). That 401k might have to be on the back burner for more than 5 years with this dive 🤦🏻♂️💸

Hello, I love your videos. You have said the travel visa can be extended up to 36 months. However when I checked with the Philippine Bureau of Immigration I was told that Americans can only get one 30 day extension. They said that all the visa requirements changed at the beginning of COVID. Is this bad information? How do I verify the correct information. Please advise. Thank you, Ron
I would check again as far as I know it is indeed 36 months and Dan has been here more than 60 days already
It’s probably a misunderstanding. You can stay here maximum 36 months. You can extend your visa every 2 months after your 30 day free visa when you arrived here in the Philippines. But make sure when you do your visa extension to do it 5 days or 4 days before it expires. Some locations they let you do 6 months and some only do for 2 months.
My first extension in May immigration here in Davao City gave me 7 months.

Ron Albright, Although Visa rules can change at anytime, so you have to do your own research on this. But at the time I wrote the below report, here is why we decided to not get a retirement visa in the Philippines. Good tacos can be had a pineapple coast in Angeles. Closest thing you will get to Mexican tacos. I have a video on it on my channel. Do not believe the hype given to Tequila Reef, it is average for Mexican food but great breakfast

How do you think Bongbong will be for the Philippines in regards to retiring there?

How can an individual or couple create connections other than just for dating? I recently saw a video by a lonely young man who regularly visited a cafe where staff were close to his age so he could make friends there. He also regularly went to events at a particular church even though he told the people there he was not religious, just wanted to make friends. Are expat groups and other organizations good for this?
How do you quickly and inexpensively prepare your lunches and dinners from home? How do you keep them cool enough to avoid spoilage? What are your go to recipes? Where do you sit to eat meals from home? Isn't dinner more expensive so a bigger savings if you bring from home?

So they spend $1200-$2000, but that amount is without a rent amount included since they own, correct ? So if they had say a $400/month rent payment they are at $1600-$2400. Sounds like they do pretty much anything they want to on that amount….not skimping on anything.
With rent I think that window you gave would be great, just depends on your lifestyle and where you want to live
What about medical? Does TRICARE cover? Reimburse? Mail from US? VA?
Yes Tricare Overseas, you have a yearly deductible, the hospital I go to Medical City Clark tracks all of that and does paperwork for me. Stuff that isn't covered at the hospital like Physical therapy you have to send in your bills for reimbursement. I haven't done it yet so not exactly sure how much you get back

Taxes in the Philippines is not like here in the US. You don’t get taxed coz of how big is ur house n how many bedrooms u have or if u have new schools nearby etc. in the Philippines u pay taxes only for the lot that ur house is standing, so its based on the present property value of ur lot as appraised by the BIR or the counterpart of IRS here in the states. So whatever ur retirement money ur receiving, in the Philippines u will live a good life
There's also a 20% discount on property tax if you pay your taxes early which I think is in January
That’s not true Jeff because I bought an empty lot and had my house built. I had to go to the local municipality Assessor’s office and a couple of the employees came to my house and measured my property and my house. Then went back to the Assessor’s office and she told me how much my property tax was. Robocop is right that if you pay in January you get 20% discount
Smart move conducting your transactions via a local bank. ATMs and local credit card are very convenient. I've been transferring cash to BDO, PNB and BPI for paying local bills and withdraw cash when I'm in the Phil for 20 plus years and have never had a problem. Those people that think Philippine banks are about to go bankrupt or will steal your money are basing their views from gossip or the odd bank issues which everyone experiences in every country.

Retired military so I have Tricare Overseas which comes out of my military retirement automatically at $33 a month but has deductibles when you use it.

BDO is the biggest bank in the Philippines. The owner of SM malls own BDO. I don't think banks can be franchised in the Philippines. Where did you get that rumor?

One thing good about rentals here in Philippines, the owners/landlords will let you customize them pretty much the way you want because they know it will rent better if you ever leave.

In both of our names but yes as far as I know you have to have Filipina spouse to buy house/land. We have been married over 30 years so our situation different than a newlywed couple

What I'm not sure is if that 100% foreign owned company can buy land in the Philippines. If it's allowed, then you have found the loophole on how to buy a land in the Philippines.

Angeles City area is actually higher than most so 115K can get you even nicer place maybe near the water in other locations

Ive heard this 1,000 times. Just watch Philly in the Philippines when he 1st arrived in Angeles he lived in an apartment on Walking Street. Wonder what kind of activities he was engaging in. Oh but Walking Street is no longer his thing either......Do you comprendo amigo
@@Steveo_00700 Entitled to your opinion, but I personally know Brian of Philly channel and I can attest he does not like doing videos of that area but he has patreons that specifically ask for that content, so he is essentially getting paid to video the area. I had my share of Angeles in the 80s and 90s. I retired to Angeles because majority of family is in this area and it has great restaurants, an international airport and is centrally located to res of Luzon. You assume all you want, no worries!

“Service in the States sucks”? This guy should visit Europe and wait for more than an hour for lunch at a restaurant before making such service related generalizations. 😀
I am "this guy" and I have been to Europe, it isn't always about the pace, it's more the attitude of most service workers in the US who give you mediocre service and expect a tip. Service in Philippines is slow but I will take it over majority of dining establishments in the US
@@FOCUSonASIA13 Well, the reason the service sucks in Europe is because it doesn’t have the same “tipping culture” as the US. If you are tipping despite not getting service then there’s a problem. Perhaps you should visit a little bit less known parts of Europe where you are not only not going to get service but would be asked why you were bothering the person who is supposed to serve you. 😀 I don’t know much about South Carolina but I lived in Charlotte, North Carolina for a while. The service there was better.
