Airstream Interstate 24X Review: Off-Roading Vanlife In A $230,000 Sprinter Conversion

- Airstream clearly wants to jump aboard the #vanlife craze with the new Interstate 24X. Based on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with air-lift suspension and a turbodiesel V6 powering all four wheels, the Interstate 24X costs $230,000.
This off-roading house on wheels drives as tamely as a modern car and comes with all the creature comforts of home, but little build quality issues seem to crop up constantly and the layout seems less refined than other similar Airstreams, like the 24GL and 24GT. And yet, Airstream can't keep these things on the shelf. Watch as Michael Van Runkle tackles a small hill in the big van and shows off all the features Airstream adds onto the excellent Sprinter van platform.

That price is crazy. Cool dog though! 🐾
TAKE MY MONEY!!!!! I NEED THIS!
I obviously don't get this thing: A 4x4 Sprinter is what? $70-80k usd? Does this really have another $150k usd of Ikea furniture and Norcold stuff inside? If you think this is rattling now, wait about 30k miles. You will need earplugs and lots of gorilla glue ;-) EDIT: 4/4/22 if you can live with that, I would put my order in for a 4x4 Benz yesterday ;-)
Smart doggie 🐶 sweet video ! Detail too even
That price is cray cray.
Being an Airstreamer VanLifer has certain upside aspects. You can work out repair timings with some advantage, including going through Mercedes dealerships on a range of issues. Cost is relative. It depends on what matters to the people and available means. Worth remembering that in addition to cost of unit, it takes a bundle to roll these around and keep them in good maintenance. They are well made. The way Airstream builds out the Mercedes chassis is an application of thousands of lessons learned over the life of the company. The luxury interests me much less than the engineering thought processes that create excellence in use. These are very usable units that serve well many life and work purposes.
I still don’t understand why you couldn’t go more than a few days without hookups with that kind of power….?
I love Airstream but I can't even afford the basecamp.
I have a travato with all the same features. I even upgraded the batteries to lithium. I get 18mpg. It is 1.5 feet shorter. But I only paid 91,000 for it. Some trucks cost that.
Nice a review from someone who doesn’t care ❤
Being all electric for house use, it should do especially well in sunny locations for charging. The generator is just cool to have as a bonus.
I totally agree with you on the interiors of the GT and GL. The perfect combination would be the X chassis and build with the GL interior. Low key but plush inside and ready for off-roading.
I’m considering getting one to use for living and as a mobile office, and I plan to use one side of the rear as an office desk. The rack mounts can easily be used to hold a tabletop, or you can remove the cushion and use the seat bottom as a desk base.
And I will buy a fully loaded Interstate 24X anyway.
Where’s the front left driver fog light cover?
One thing though where these are on an axle you can’t stretch these out for 30 yrs now ! More like 5 yrs
That dirt you've tracked in the $230k camper 😭😭😭
Glad that I will buy a fully loaded Airstream Interstate 24X anyway.
Test drove one and was pretty tight ,,you might have had a press camper that has been put through the paces . Like the GT model a bit better like you said for the money !
And I will buy a fully loaded Interstate 24X anyway.
👍
The solar is actually 400 watts not 300!!
The AC can’t be controlled via the little screen in the back like you mentioned…that’s the heater controller
Appreciate the video but you’ve missed some many points
Too bad they did not fill you in more ! Does have a lot more to offer that you did do know about .
I think that it is actually 300 for solar and then 100 is used for the engine battery maintenance system.
