I absolutely love that painting in back of you while you’re talking at the beginning of this video...It’s the one of the dark haired woman in the long light colored dress standing & facing away from the mirror on the old, but oh so beautiful vanity because that is an amazing & gorgeous painting!!!
will have to come back to this a couple times so saving it of course, but i can’t take in a lot of information like this at once. i would suggest putting captions or little notes of main subjects into your videos. i think it would help a lot, just a critique not to be rude. still subscribing
This is my #1 art supply. White, black, and clear, and I often tint it too for my cold wax underpainting. But I definitely use pastel ground for pastels, not gesso.
This is great, definitely getting saved for my reference videos to help with my art journey, yes I meant journey. Thanks again Janelle for everything. Take care and God bless. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas
I've always been very nervous to use gesso, but the more videos I see where it's being used, & tips/tricks on ways to use it, the more I want to attempt using it!
Thank you Soooooo much for all of this amazing information. Your explanations has given me so much understanding of why to use Gesso. As. Newbie to the art world this will be extremely valuable moving forward.
I have always wondered what gesso is for and this video was very informative. I now have a better idea on how to use it. Thanks for making this video 🙂
I am wanting to alter a deck of playing cards by drawing on them with colored pencil. I am a beginner and playing cards are typically smooth and glossy. I have no idea how to prepare the cards to be able to draw with colored pencil. Can you help me with that or tell me where to go to find out? Thank you
i don't like the white effect of gesso.. is there a way to keep the natural color of the canvas? Can i use a matte clear water based polyurethane or something to seal the canvas before painting?
I gesso my sketchbook pages for the acrylic and markers (since they bleed through too). The only thing I don’t like is the ripples/wrinkles that sometimes happen. Sometimes I can work them into the design, other times not.
Do you have a video that covers all the mediums available? I recently bought some color burst watercolors, watercolor markers, distress products, and dylusions ink sprays and while I was you tubing how to use them I started hearing about all sorts of other interesting products I never knew existed like pot pastels. I am a freak when it comes to trying and collecting all colors of bright mixed media and I love mixing techniques. Prob is there are so many cool products that I wanna make sure I pick the best type for the look I want. But i cant use what I don’t know about. Just in this video alone you mentioned several mediums I didn’t know exist. Would be awesome to see some comparisons for example between water soluble oil pastels, regular pastels and pot pastels. Also ie searched high and low for color swatching videos fort different mediums because I never know how to choose colors online just by name. Also the lighting differs amongst internet cameras which distorts color. Also I have to always pause video to get good look at colors because all the ones I’ve seen move way too quickly to get a good look.
Thanks for all the tips on Gesso, I have usually only used to to seal my cradle timber boards before pouring acrylics or for painting in acrylics ....thanks for sharing so much information 💙💙
Instead of using gesso on the wood board, could we just spray the whole board with Krylon flat white spray paint? I've have success painting with acrylic paints on sheet metal primed with flat white spray paint.
Gesso already has paint in it. I don’t think it will become more transparent as paint will just make it more opaque. You can add a little bit of water to the gesso but be careful as too much water in the gesso can make it “gum up” and peel off the canvas really easy.
On The Master List is making Gesso! Black and white for sure for sure. Isn't Marble Dust one of the ingredients?? Oh clear too, yesYESyes! You're such a Delight! G. E. S. S. O. Heehee ~X🏡X~
I don't get why you would but paint scribbles in the bible or a hymnal ????????? Other than that, thanks for the info. I finally opened my bottle of Gesso tonight because I've been experimenting with watercolor markers lately and markers eat basic watercolor paper really fast.
Have you heard of bible journaling? They make bibles specifically to draw and write in. And these hymnals were going to be thrown away. This way I can use them in my mixed media artwork and have some personally meaningful words in my artwork. Also, hymnals are not bibles. If you view hymnals as sacred as bibles than I would say that is what is blasphemous rather than writing & drawing in hymnals. I would not rip up pages of the Bible but I would print out verses from the Bible & put those in my artwork.
+Barbara Mosher it wasn’t the bible. It was a hymn book. So not a Holy book. The only Holy book is the Bible. If you consider a hymn book Holy than that is what is actually blasphemous.
I've been so confused as to the purpose of the gesso. Still so new to this world. Thanks so much for making sense of it all.
OMG, I can use Gesso in my mixed media sketchbook for Gouache!? YES!
I feel overwhelmed 😬
Well it’s a 43 minute long video I feel you!
Thank so much to share your knowledge! Very informative! You’ve got a new subscriber 🧡
I know I’m late to the party here but this is a very helpful video, really helpful info and demos!!! Thank you!

try thinner but more applications.

Please share the name of the video that you made the swatch book Please
I think you might mean this one. I’m not sure though. Jane Davenport Color Sticks Vs Gelatos Comparison Video
Got it, thanks a lot for sharing
Lots to absorb. I'll need to listen through it again... thanks!
I found this really informative. Just recently started using Gesso but really didn’t know a lot about it....I know more now! Thank you!
I’m so glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching ❤️
Extremely helpful. ..thanks for the tutorial :)
Extremely helpful. ..thanks for the tutorial xxx
Thanks, that is a lot of info, more than my brain can hold ! Most definitely saving this for reference !
Awesome information. Thanks!
Does gesso work the same as liquid white?
No. Gesso is a primer.
Thank you for the tutorial does anybody know do you have to wait for gesso to dry or if you have time can you please tell me thank you
Depends on the look you’re going for you can
Ýou should give the gesso 24 hours for a complete dry. If you are in a hurry, you can paint when the gesso is dry to the touch.
Should I use it when painting a sweatshirt with acrylic and fabric medium and can gesso be used with textile medium
No, do not use gesso on fabric. I’m not a fabric painting expert but gesso is not made for fabric.
Great video! 💗💕💗💕
Ty
Thank you. This is very helpful info on using Gesso. 🌸
Thank you this helped me understand so much more👍😁
Oh no. I love the video but I’m so sensitive to the lip smack noise. 😫
Hello can i gesso gouache? Or is it the same as watercolor? And can i use it on a canvas?
yes you can use it on canvas for acrylic and oil painting
Your video helped me understand the difference..... I wanna to sell my art , any help pls .🙏🏻
It really helps a lot 💛💛
I noticed alot of artists they don't Gesso and I hate to see the canvas lines behind colors of their paintings it looks cheap and made in a rush
Ya I can’t imagine not using gesso. You would also have to use so much more paint.
Can I use Gesso on canvas after doing pencil work? I already did my pencil work and forgot about the gesso
you can apply it thinly so the pencil work shows through
you can always tint the gesso
Can i mix gesso and acrylic paint to make it more transparent when painting wash technique? Thanks

Love your video, but was sad to see Holy books being destroyed for such projects.
