- This was a quick video I made just to go a little more in depth about Gesso! I've talked about it in briefly in my videos but wanted to go a little more in depth for anyone who is still a little confused. If you have any other questions, put them in the comments!

Tip for beginners and cheapskates (like me): white latex interior house paint can be used as gesso. Back when I was 15 and had no idea what gesso was, and canvasses were too expensive for me to learn on with my new Bob Ross oil paint kit, so I cut up some 1/4 plywood scraps from my dad's shop, and "primered" them in white paint we happen to have in the basement....or it may have been white primer, like Killz. 25 years later, the oil paint is still in great shape. No flaking off, no cracking. Just thought I'd throw that out there since house paint is way cheaper than art-supply store gesso. Also, if you're making boards from larger sheets of 1/4 MDF from Home Depot, paint the board before cutting it to save time.
thank you! will try this out
For some reason every time I visit this channel I feel safe and comforted
Awwww! That makes me so happy! Thank you so much!
Same😍
Yeah same because she kind of reminds me of a mom
I love gessoing lol I usually do it when I want to paint something but don’t know what. It makes me feel just as productive. Also I used to sand away my stupid gesso and didn’t realize how important that toothy feeling was lol my art prof in college used to say that you could literally gesso bed sheets and they’d be good enough to paint on lol
Lol! I love gessoing as well
I feel this same way, sometimes doing the prep stuff for art can get my creativity flowing!
Me last year: WTF IS GESSO
Me now: I NEED MORE GESSO AND THEY NEED TO MAKE IT IN EVERY COLOR , SHADE AND PIGMENT !
There are lots of UA-cam videos out there now on how to make your own gesso. You might know that by now but just thought I’d try to be helpful😇😋 also in any color you want
This is the chaotic good we all need right now
I have never watched your videos before and 19 seconds in and I'm already obsessed with you!
Thanks I finally understand how gesso works I was confused before
Liked for the helpful info, subscribed for the sweetest personality. 🌼
Your videos are very comforting.😊
I liked your sweater, you video and and quirky fun info delivery! Great video! Thanks!
I bought a few MDF boards and they're sucking all of my acrylic paints, so this video came on the best time for me! Thank you for being such an inspiration
Ana hooray! I’m so glad this helped out! Thank you so much!
hi idk if you’ll see this comment since the video is old but i recently bought the masters touch all purpose sealer from hobby lobby and when i put it over my painting (where i used micro pens for the lineart) the ink on the lineart started smearing and it messed up my painting 😔😔 idk if i was supposed to put the sealer first or do it after or mix it with the acrylic paint ; anyways i kinda wasted the canvas cus now everything is smeared so i was wondering if i can paint over it
Yes, you can fix it by layering gesso on it again :)
A small artist here learning from this!
Thanks Emily from Portugal 🇵🇹
OMG, look up Leslie Hall and her Gem Sweater Museum, she would loooove that sweater!
What if you're using acrylic paint or regular colored pencils (not oil based) on wood? Would you still recommend applying gesso?
Question, I've been an artist my whole life however I haven't painted since I was young. I recently am getting back into it (I'm currently working on following one of your tutorials to practice). I may using acrylics and I also got some gesso. I'm now rambling 🤦 but my question is, I saw somewhere that gesso ontop of making the canvas smoother to paint on, it also makes it so the paint doesn't soak into the pores of the canvas that creates that canvas look and also makes it easier to "blend" colors on the canvas. Is this true?
I believe this is true. Gesso = primer for your canvas. It closes the pores of the canvas so you will not use as much paint, and it makes your strokes more even. You can apply multiple layers of gesso just to make sure (2 layers are nice)
Yes i saw that too in some video. I am still confused whether to buy gesso or not
@@priyankajain884 I recommend using it. I always use it.
Hello I'm a big fan for your painting 😍❤❤ and I want to know what is linseed stand oil
stand folio di lino the use of a yellow-brown color like this please answer my question🤩:)
I’m gonna subscribe to this channel. Right now. I’m gonna... There! Subbed!
When doing a painting can gesso be used as a substitute for white paint?
Depends on what medium you use
yes, know that different brands will have different thicknesses. Even cheaper grade vs. professional artist grade will be different. For example Liquitex student grade gesso to me seems thicker than their professional grade.
Nice 👍🏿👍🏿
Hey! I recently started following you and was super excited to give painting a go. I bought a pre-stretched canvas with the description: "Triple titanium acrylic gesso primed at 10oz weight for immediate painting application" but my color is super thin on it. I can see the underneath canvas white even after applying the darkest color. Is the color at fault or canvas? Should I buy a more heavy body acrylic paint?
Hi! I think that it’s probably the paints rather than the canvas. Either using heavier body paints or painting in multiple layers should help. I’m not a professional painter, so I could be wrong.
Hi emily. My son and I tried to do acrylic paintings as a beginner. We are using a sketchbook coz i find it so expensive when we use canvas. But when i saw this video it gives or help me think to try this board if its cheap. If you dont mind, can i ask what kind of wood i should purchse??..thank you. Actually I subscribed lastnight the first time i saw you painting sky water and sand
I'm using oil paint, do I just cover the canvas on a layer of white acryilic?
yes, you can either cover it by gesso or white acrylic paint
I love ur T-shirt ❤️ and great video thank you i was looking for something exactly like this🤗
Hello Emily Mackey Art. How are you doing? Can i use black and white gesso for my gouache paints? I love you,re paintings.😊😁👋🏾👍🏾
You are so cute and love your channel so much i am art your album paintings and i am successful.i am 13 years old. I love painting so much . I also art your album paintings.😘😘😘.love you..
Thank you for making this video! I hope you make video on how you varnish your paintings 🤩
Huh. I've been painting with acrylics for years and never used gesso. But if you can use acrylic paint instead of gesso, then... does it matter? It sounds super heckin' boring, tbh.
good
Hi I have used silicone mix in my moulds and painted them with gesso for a base for waxing but the gesso flakes off have you any idea how I can prevent it peeling please
Hi can i ask what is the a good kind of paint varnish to protect your painting i dont know what its called sorry ✨🎨QwQ🎨✨
I bought the Sargent gesso and now I’m seeing I should’ve bought the liquitex 😑
Thanks for breaking that down I was lost I didn't not know why gesso why its purpose was again thanks
Hi Emily! Thanks for the video, very informative! I'm really interested in doing some sketching before I come with my acrylic paint, but i'm not sure whats the best approach (i'm new at this!). First of all, I wanna work on a brown stained watercolor paper that i'll stain myself at home (probably using white gesso mixed with burnt umber acrylic paint). My questions are, 1) Do you know if I can use charcoal pencil's as a drawing tool for sketching if i'll be using acrylics on top? If not, what would be best pencil? 2) I was planning on applying 1 or 2 coats of brown gesso, let it dry, sketch on top of it with some pencil, and then apply 1 coat of clear gesso on top of it, so that the sketch marks don't interfere or mix with the acrylic paint. Is that a good plan? Do i need this third coat of clear gesso or is it unnecessary? 3) Is there any better way for me to do all this besides this approach? Sorry for the long comment, Thanks for the video , take care!
👋really new in the world of art. This was very helpful. I am learning with acrylics for now. I appreciate quick and to the point vids. So, thanks so much! Oh btw ...love artsy closeup action at the end😁
I love your videos 💜☺️ I don’t know if anyone can help me... I’m a beginner painter and I recently tried to use oil paints but it didn’t go so well 😂 maybe it was because I didn’t prime my canvas but by the time I had mixed the colours the paints went on dry and sticky. When trying to blend the oil paints out it was just sticky and I was unable to blend them. I don’t know why this happened.
dazzling sweater! Thank you for the tips
You are as cute as a button, lol
Great video, this old grandma thinks you are adorable. :)
Question: why not just spray paint the big board with water-based white paint three times before you have you fiance cut it up? Is there something magic about Gesso that a properly-chosen white polyacrylic spraypaint couldn't replace? Seems like it would be way less tedious than brushing all the boards individually?
if it works for you then fine, but gesso is different than paint.
I want to start painting i made a canvas so what should i do because i dont have gesso and how many lares of white acrylic do i need to put
Okay I just found this video and it’s the most helpful one ever. Keep up these helpful small videos I love it!!
what kind of easle do you use?
Well I feel stupid now. I bought me gesso thinking that I should put it on my canvas and you say you don't need it if the canvas is already primed. Oh well. I am just now getting back into acrylics. I am a big noob.
I always use gesso on canvases before I do my acrylic painting. I think it would be better than skipping it just because they put on a little on before you buy it. If you skip it it does save time and money but I think the results would be better if you did use gesso.
Omg i luv u!!! U so cute thanx for a simple tutorial! Dont know your finance, but luv him too! 💞cool sweater
I just found you and I’m so glad I did.
Thank you for existing 🖤✨
Ngl I could probably watch a 24 hour gesso stream
Thank you for this video. I bought a painted canvas for cheap but don’t like it, can I use gesso to cover up the ugly?
Yes! You absolutley can.
Emily Mackey Art, Thank you! I also love that sweater!
Emily Mackey Art , I’m on my fourth coat of white. The canvas originally had brown abstract. How many coats am I supposed to put on it? Should I now use regular paint? I am so confused.
So gesso for a canvas is like priming for miniatures?
Thanks! You have no idea how much I have wanted to ask, but felt embarrassed 😳
Anita Davidson HAHAHAHAHA!!! No worries! Glad I could help!
plus different brushes n acrylic paints
The gesso use just for oil painting or WE CAN use it for acrylique painting ?
I always gesso my canvases before I paint with acrylics. I only do acrylic, never used oils.
Hi Emily , what kind of wood that you paint Gessoo , you are amazing thanks for teaching me😘❤🌹
how long have you been painting?
...wipe down dust with a wet cloth...
Is it easy to clean Gesso out of your brush ?
where do you buy it please
What type of the wood you use? Thank you.
I thought it was white paint
Can you use a heat gun on the gesso to speed up the process?
outsource it, baby!
can I use gesso over an already-painted canvas? to reuse it?
Absolutely! I've totally done that before.
Emily Mackey Art Thank you so much!
I've been gessoing since waaaay before you were born. But I've never heard anyone explain exactly why we gesso before. :-) Love how simple and direct this is.
You can't be serious.
@@jZamora87 y lmao
I love how u flex whatever stuff ur fiancée does for u, it makes me so happy , YASS QUEEN MAKE ME FEEL SINGLE 😌💕
I have a question. My oil paint takes days to dry up .. is it normal?
XD its completely normal. Actually it often takes months for oils to dry depending on how heavily u painted so dont worry
:)
I have a question. I have bought canvases that are already primed for acrylic paints BUT I am going to use OIL paints on it. So, do I have to gesso it?
( I am a beginner with only watercolour experience, if you couldn't already tell)
I just love listening to you 😍😍😍 it’s so cute 😍
If we are using acrylic colours on wood is it necessary to use gesso???
I have always gessoed the wood before painting on it, also my canvases. And I always use acrylic paints.
Nice jumper :)
Hey Emily.. I have a brush for my gesso that is so dry now and the gesso cannot be removed from my brush😩. What should I do?
I have a ton of leftover primer from painting the walls. Do you think that will work well?
"Let me make sure im recording. I am hurray! That's always nice"
hi im first time here on your channel and i wonder if gesso have wash or soft free i mean can be washable or protect our paint in water? thank you for your reply and im subscribing your channel
can you use gesso as titanium white acrylic because i don't have white acrylic paint and i only got gesso 😭
0:01 yes I do
so you don,t use it for gouach paint? I know you said you can use it for waterbase paint but i,ll ask you just in case
Do you use gesso for sketchbook?
You could do that if you work on many layers or thick paints :)
Hey I wanted to know ... If it's important to varnish ? I paint on glass with Acrylics and i was wondering if varnishing would protect my painting... Have a good day ! ❤️
I'm looking for what gesso is and you put title right. I enjoy the video. thanks for aking it!
Thanks
What is the name of the wood ? Pls answer
It is MDF board :)
Curious if I could follow a bob Ross tutorial with acrylics or not possible since its oil paints he uses
I just bought gesso today Bc I thought it was bs and I love TEXTURE butttttt it is kinda slick
❤❤❤
I really love the way you speak and the way you explain anythinggggggg. BTW New Subscriber here from Philippines!!! ❤ i luv painting too
I actually find doing it relaxing, I get music going and do like you a bunch at a time.
I used to gesso my boards and sand them down etc, but now I just use GAC-100. I paint with acrylics though, unsure how GAC-100 interacts with oils :P
You can make your own home made gesso with white acrylic, some wood glew and a liiiittle bit of baby powder if it's thick u can add some water.
Thank you very much for explaining Gesso! :)
I love your sweater, and your fiance is awesome. And this video was awesome. Thanks.
Hi Emily!!!!! DOES CLEAR GESSO
“assuming same as white” does it pull and smear your art work when brushing over dried acrylic??? I need something I can use to lock and seal my colors when I want to layer and not blend colors! I also would like something I can use for more than one thing like a final overall clear coat too..... or..., a medium too? Can you add clear gesso to paint to make it more permanent??
Hello!! I recommend using a paint varnish instead!
Can i use white spray paint instead of gesso ?
Idk but your the only artist that i watch literally FINISHED hehe ur so cute
Hello - a question regarding the boards you use - are the boards plywood? Do boards warp a little when gesso and paint is applied on the board? thank you.
thats so interesting that you mention you dont need it for acrylics! do you know if its any different on tempered hardboard? i just bought some that ive been gessoing for acylics, some sites say you should even varnish the board first to seal it 🙄🙄
Great video. Ditch the music, please....
Love your personality and energy! Makes it much easier to listen and pay attention 😂 I'd like to see some of these unedited vids 🤣
Yeso in spanish means cast like plaster. When u hurt ur hand 🖐 and they put a cast. Im spanish is yeso
Oh my gosh! I had no idea! how cool!
were did you get those boards? There asome
Do we need to prime the board with liquitex thrice ?
