Barcelona are in hot water, again. This time for alleged payments to a company owned by a former La Liga referee for insider knowledge on how to manipulate referees.
Why did Barcelona do this? Is this illegal? What are the repercussions?
Pol Ballus & Laia Cervello Herrero explain, Craig Silcock illustrates.

Barcelona should be banned from football altogher. Plain and simple. Never forget that UCL semi-final VS Chelsea. They bribed the referee to win that game.
Real Madrid vs Bayern 2017, so madrid should be banned too right?

The only thing I'm curious about is how this scandal will compare to Calciopoli when it's all said and done.
Calciopoli, ALL of the big clubs, Milan, Juve, Inter, Lazio, Fiorentina, etc, did NOT pay referees. They selected referees that would decide favorably for their matches. Moggi was recorded calling refs. So was the staffer on behalf of Gallaini for Milan. So was MORRATTI. But all of the rivals were punished except for Inter; why? TELECOM ITALIA Shareholder was on the board of Inter Milan. All of its enemies were punished and Inter with Billionaire Morratti who could not buy a Scudetto despite being top spender was given a competitive advantage by having a monopoly over the transfer market.
This is no where near the level of that scandal
@@tonytellingitlikeitis5708 hope your victimhood shines through again with the capital gains case, and the salaries under the table aka fraud. No morratti to hide behind now😂

what barca is being charged for is conflict of interest, i.e paying him when he was in an active position of influence that he would have used his influenced to favor the club in that said period of time. corruption comes in due to how the deal was uncovered as Negreira was evading Taxes and the sum of money paid to him was exorbitant over that said period of time. the aspect of sporting favors has to be proven in court inorder for barca to be persecuted and as of now, there's zero prove of sporting favors over the said period of time being charged by the persecutors.

5:40 "to make sure no refereeing decisions were made against them, which is to say, for everything to be neutral"
Do people realise that this is basically admission of guilt ?
Other teams do have decisions go against them sometimes, so if Barcelona pays to eliminate decisions against them - then that is an advantage ! So the situation is NOT neutral when that happens.
The playing field must be equal for all. All the teams accept that sometimes referees make mistakes against them. As long as it is unintentional (human error), it will not matter, because it will average out over time (sometimes you get erros in your favor, sometimes against you).
But If one team eliminates those unfavorable mistakes (through payment) - the average refereeing manner toward that team will be better than the others.
Think of it mathematically:
- let's say you rate each "refereeing performance" on a scale from 0 to 10, which evaluates how correct the decisions were
- so when the referee makes mistakes, he gets a rating of 0, if he doesn't he gets a rating of 10
- assuming no "foul play" and only human error, over time each team will receive an average rating of 5 (because 0+10 divided by 2 is 5)
- now if one of the teams eliminates the unfavorable performances (those where the rating is below 5), then you end up with only above average refereeing perfomances so the calculation would look like this: 5+10 divided by 2, which equals 7.5
- so to sum it up, the other teams receive refereeing performances averaging a rating of 5, while Barcelona receives refereeing performances averaging 7.5

Barcelona are the dodgiest club in Europe - and you can guarantee that they won't face any sanctions whatsoever
Funny thing is that all the information they allegedly paid this guy to gather for them they could have fairly easily gotten themselves without breaking the law and without shelling out hundreds of thousands of euros to this guy every season
And if you actually do pay for those reports the managers really should know about them so they can instruct their players or at least know which of their staff are going to do it.
There were never any reports.
@Johan Halvarsson Pretty sure they found the reports during a police raid
Tell us the way(they should've contacted you for referee behaviour reports not the referee association themselves) by which barca could easily gotten themselves these reports this would be of help for other spanish clubs too as they do the same thing as a common practice.
@@PlatFlame The reports they found have not been singed. Additionally I doubt anyone would pay 500 000 euros a year for a 3 page report on a referee a match. Now Barça has a person to do such reports for 25K a year. I think you can spot the difference.
@Dancho Stanchev Yordanov I also doubt over the span of those years it was only abt million euros to buy out the refeeres I don't see a world where they would something like this but that's just me maybe if they find some actual evidence
Bro, Barcelona didn't pay the head of referees. He was the vice president and holds no power over who gets to ref the games. Stop spreading misinformation.
He’s in a position of power. The position wouldn’t exist otherwise
@@xnlyxn9862
Except he literally doesn't have the power to appoint refs, which has been started repeatedly.
If Barcelona were really trying to bribe, or at the very least influence refs, which is what several outlets, including Tifo (who I thought see better than this clickbait title) are suggesting, it would make more sense to actually pay someone with actual influence over who gets to ref what game, don't you think? The argument some people are making falls flat on its face when you think about it for more than 5 seconds.
@@Arponare He is a vice president. Whether he does or doesn’t have the power to appoint ref’s is irrelevant. He is in a position of influence and paying this man whilst he was still employed in that position is incredibly shady. Regardless of the intent of the payment, it will still influence ALL the referee’s because this man without a doubt has some influence on the rest of the RC
Even in the case i dismiss this fact, not only did he get paid, why was he paid through shell companies? If it were such a legitimate thing that you are twisting this to be, why not pay straight up with your name on the transaction? The only reason you would ever have to do that is if you are trying to hide something.
In fact, why have I never heard of any of the players or managers receiving the “reports”? If anyone needs these reports its them. If they don’t receive it then the payments were obviously not intended for “reports”.
Also, even if you were right, every club should receive those reports. Thats such a significant advantage they have over other teams.
Whichever way you look at this, theres no doubt something incredibly dodgy is going on. I wouldn’t be surprised if they corrupted ucl refs too considering how they robbed arsenal and chelsea
Now they really can be called VARca 😂
I hate Barcelona but I don't think anything will come of this. A lot of smoke and probably no evidence that referees unfairly favored Barcelona. I think having Messi was enough of a help for any team.
At most the punishment will be a slap on the wrist suspended sentence for 3 years.
Maybe heavier punishment from UEFA if they're willing to open the can of worms prolonged legal battles.
When the whole world thinks a club is corrupt and then it just so happens that they might be… regardless of the truth it’s hard to believe that the Barca board is legitimate altogether
I hope you're talking about Bartomeu and not Laporta, who was not even involved

If this was say... Manchester City would UEFA make no comment? Just a question
Always knew something was wrong in that Chelsea game
the entire matter only resides in the spanish domicile 🤡🤡 also yes, there was something wrong in that chelsea game, for both the teams
This would have no influence over eufa referees
We all did and I'm not even a Chelsea fan
There was something wrong with most of their games
Chelsea 2009, Arsenal 2011 (Van Persie sent off), Milan 2006 (Shevchenko disallowed goal) etc, but those were UEFA games and referees, not Spanish.
Just saying
1)something like bribing the referees is what u do under the table u dont make official paperworks
2) Barca have also been wronged by referees , if u just hit youtube you can find it out how many times they have been wronged in the league itself, once even costing them the la liga title.
3) Vice president has no power to ask referees what they do in a match, he is the head, but not a boss.
4) Even i dont trust Bartomeu at all. But i also dont trust a club as big as barca with world and journalist watching each move they make, paying 1.4 million to such a big man wont come out for many years, if u guys remember what happened with juventus when they did the same.
5) Lastly, Wont deny it looks sus, and all these comments made by people involved in this matter are pretty concerning too, but paying the referees is a very big scandal and not something which remains hidden for so damn long. IT could be something wrong, something illegal, but i refuse to believe something as big as bribing referees can happen.
Ah!
Now it all makes sense why Pique always kept on complaining to the referees.
You gotta earn that money on the field ref.😂
Sure the money was just resting in his account..... Barcelona aren't guilty, there has never been any corruption in football....... City are also just a very well run club and make loads of money from their HUGE fan base.....
Because it is a farmers league with terrible officiating to go along with the abysmal teams that play in it. They wanted to ensure that they got the calls. It is that simple. Barcelona should be relegated and their trophies in that time should go to whoever was in second place. Ridiculous that this still happens. Especially for a team that so proudly say that they “play the game the way they see it should be played” and that it is “more than a club.” It is absurd.
Not happening, and even if, most of the trophies they lost would go to Real Madrid, and anyone who thinks they are an honest club is dreaming.
@@Lonestarr022 Oh I know. Italian football set a precedent and we can only hope that Spain follows suit, but they are extremely corrupt as well.
The amount of misinformation in this video is amazing, you'd think that a reputable group such as Tifo from the Athletic would try to get the facts straight. Starting with the title and basically the first point of the video: Barcelona didn't pay the Head of Refeerees. Instead, what they did was pay a company which belongs to the son of the Vice President of the Refereeing Committe (Negreira). Furthermore, Negreira had neither influence on referees or the power to appoint referees to any game. As we all have probably read or seen, Barcelona is being accused of basically paying for better refereeing decisions and for appointing distinct referees for the matches they wanted, this is all a fallacy that in a court of law holds no merit because there is no evidence of this.
I love Barca and I can't stand Real Madrid. That should be no barrier to anyone recognising that if these charges are proven, Barca should be stripped of every domestic trophy they won in that period. Cheating can never be tolerated or winning means nothing.
Barca fans, and past players and coaches (assuming they didn't know about it), should be outraged that all their huge successes have been tainted by what was, even if it's not found to be criminal, obviously dodgy practices.
Why would players and menagers have to pay for it ?
Tifo conveniently left out the part where on Tuesday (as in 2 days ago) the arbitrators of this case found no evidence that Barcelona’s alleged payoffs to Negreira led to result manipulation or influenced the result of any match in La Liga. In act they only found evidence that it was true that Barca had been paying for technical reports that were all done by Negreiras son.
having said all that, I still think that Bartomeu and Rosell should face some kind of punishment for what they did, it was very unethical and irresponsible of them.
So it is guilty till proven innocent now?

It's funny because prior to this video posted, the Spanish Treasury have already made the assessment that there were no evidence of the accusations that were made against them.
that’s different from UEFA doing the investigation.
What do you mean by "the Spanish Treasure"? Both the Spanish Federation and LaLiga have sued Barcelona.
That's why they're in charge of taxes and not of the justice. That's an instutional statement to ensure that's no their job to make accusations, the federation, UEFA and Spanish justice however, are carrying the investigation. So no, they aren't saying Barcelona is innocent neither.
@@sevvvs UEFA can only make a verdict when the spanish court give a verdict on Barca being guilty or not. TEBAS took the case to UEFA because only UEFA can punish barca if barca is guilty because la liga is time banned. everything depends on if the court finds barca guilty of sport corruption.
@@martinmcmartinezface4243 i dont know where you get your news from but i will suggest you change your source. if you say la liga have sued barca? please state the grounds???
right now the only case is from the prosecutors office charging neigera and rosell, Bartholomeu and other barca directors over corruption.
la liga can't take actions against barca because there are time banned which is why tebas reported to UEFA for investigation.
I hope Barca sue you for defaming our club. You only showed the people what is on the surface, but when you look deeper into it you would know that Barca did not pay refs for favorable decisions. This is extremely dangerous for you to do and I hope you do end up getting sued.
So from 2001 to 2018, that is 17 seasons, 7.2m euros, and average of 423k/season to adulterate a competition, not that expensive. That seems to be something within the affordability range of any team in La Liga...
That we know of … they could use cash or other collateral under the table
If you pay 5M a year to the VP of the referees, then it becomes to obvious. They say this started because Barcelona tried to deduct expenses with the tax agency and they started to ask documentation which they couldn't provide
It’s not only 7.3 millions. The difference between refereeing in First division and second division is about $200k per year. That’s a lot for a referee. Enriquez Negreira controlled who was gonna referee each division.
@@Arms1234 How Negreira would use the money and his influence, that's a different matter. What I'm saying is, if that is how much it costs to adulterate a competition, it is very cheap as compared as the many other expenditures that a club has. That's why the reporting quotes the total figure, to make it sound bigger, as if they gave the cost per season that would not be as impacting. which is suspicious.
7.3 Million is the money they found. I also think it's cheap, but if they found 7.3M, who is to say that's all there is?
Dont forget Barca vs PSG
that’s was just a awful refree their never paid refrees people are just blind by the media that’s the hurt truth
