  • This year Ramadan will start on Monday March 11th.
In some countries, the date of Ramadan depends on the sighting of the new moon.
Muslims believe that the Islamic holy book, the Qu'ran, was revealed during the month of Ramadan.
Muslims fast during Ramadan. They are not allowed to eat or drink during the daylight hours.
Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. The five pillars are: Shahada (Declaration of faith); Salah (Prayer); Zakat (Charity), Sawm (fasting) and Hajj (Pilgrimage)
Muslims fast to become closer to God and focus on spiritual needs.
It is also a way to show gratitude to Allah for all the blessings he gives.
Muslims have an early morning meal before dawn, known as Suhur.
It is eaten early in the morning before the first prayer of the day, called Fajr.
They break their fast after sunset for the evening meal, called Iftar.
Ramadan is also a time when Muslims are encouraged to give to charity, strengthen their relationship with God, and show kindness and patience.
During the month, believers also head to the mosque for an additional night
prayer called Taraweeh. It is performed after 'Isha' (Night) prayer.
On the sighting of the next new moon, the month ends with Eid al-Fitr, a three-day festival. Eid al-Fitr translates to "festival of breaking the fast" in Arabic. Kids are often given new clothes, presents and money. Muslims attend early morning prayers the day after Ramadan and families can often be seen outside picnicking.
