One thing to remember is that there are a ton of different riding styles and variable when it comes to drops, this is the method that has worked best for me and seemed to really click with April but there really isn't a definite one sized fits all approach to every drop. Sometimes the trail forces you to hit it with very little speed and in that case you will need to do more of a "manual" or "huck" off of the end but those are more advanced moves in my opinion. This method works best for drops with a little bit of speed and nice flat or slightly downward takeoff. Hope you guys enjoy! Let me know if you have any questions at all!
This honestly was the best explanation on dropping I have ever seen. I started mountain biking at 60 years old and now at 64 I am loving doing drops. I have not graduated to anything like the big one yet but after watching this I can see that it is possible. I have learned a ton from my 12 year old grandson but this video says it all. Thanks for making a ol' Granny's day!
@Vokunos I started snowboarding at 41, I'm 44 and about to pull the trigger on a mtb so I'm not bored in the summer. I am a little concerned my dumb ass is going to send it like I did when I was a teenager and end up with something fractured and a long heal time due to age. But what other options are there? Stay home and read a book? Nah

Thats so awesome! I am super glad to hear that, yeah give it a shot but definitely practice the technique on something small first and then have a friend film you in slomo and try to analyze your riding!
This is the best drop video on UA-cam, hands down. You don't need much, if any, explosive movement on a drop. It's literally just shifting your weight back as your tire begins to go over the edge. There's no "lunging the bike" ahead of yourself either (unless you're going too slow). It's just tighten up your core, get your weight back until your arms almost lockout, and then come back forward in time to match the landing. This vid shows the correct and the easiest technique for drops.
Just saw you in Rich Drew’s video, I live in KCMO close to bentonville, I’m 53, been riding for approx. 3 yrs. After watching several of your vids, you inspired me to share something I’ve been ashamed of most my life. I also have struggled with depression and anxiety/panic attacks most my life. Unable to take meds due to chronic stomach issues it’s been trial and error, the one thing I discovered recently that reduced my depression significantly was magnesium 64 from rising supplements, one a day. Thanks for the onnit 5htp recommendation, I still have a lot of panic/anxiety and will look into it. Needless to say life’s been a rocky ride so thanks for sharing.

Hey guys, just wanted to say that I recently discovered your channel and have binged all the tutorials as I prepare for my first enduro race and just need to soak up all the knowledge and inspiration I can. You two seem like a humble and easy going couple, and Kyle is really great at breaking down into steps that seem logic and are easy to follow. Can't wait to see what you come up with next!
That was one of the most motivational mtb “how to’s” I have ever watched! I have been riding for decades and still find drops over 4 feet daunting. This video is a great help. Thanks 🙏🏻
Same here pal but was dropping 4ft today like child’s play. I used to hop a bit and this is much more stable. I’ll try 6 ft next week. We have some hero drops at 16ft. One day!
April you’re my hero!! The way your pony tail flies in the wind as you hit that big jump is epic. Thanks for being willing to be the demonstrator in these videos. As a woman it is so much more inspiring!
Really good video. The difference in technique between April’s first runs off the small drop and the big one at the end is incredible, she looks like a complete pro and the landing is lighter from the big drop than it was from the little one! Definitely need to get out there and practise this as I think I still have a tendency to hop off drops.
Thanks Kyle and Thanks April! Got into MTB this spring. This video helped me progress so much with my jumping. Did my first jumps last week and today I sent one that’s been looking at me for months. You two are a big part of the success! Thanks!
Great stuff, Kyle! Your way of explaining how to drop and manual makes it so much easier to understand the technique. And it's very helpful showing the most common errors and how to fix them. Please make more of those!
Your GF is a BEAST! This was exactly what I needed to go attack some drops that I have been avoiding for months and months. Thanks so much! #subscribed
Wow!!! YOU ROCK APRIL!!! Way to go! So great to have a good and patient teacher! I have been riding about 5 years but primarily solo and self taught. As a result, you are a far better rider than I am. I’m 52 so I don’t bounce as well as I used to haha but I would love to learn to be a better rider than I am now so I appreciate ALL your videos. Keep them coming and I’ll keep watching you two! Thank-you so much to you both!
I kid you not, when April dropped off the highest, I was not breathing!!!! I'm learning a lot from both of you. April has so much more skills than this proud grandfather of 3. Kyle, you've got oodles of patience. I've so enjoyed all your videos so far and I'm about 2-3 months since subbing y'all. And occasionally y'all make my heart skip a beat with some of your drops. Maintain your excellence and peace out.
I feel like I learned a lot. I had resigned myself to believe I was too old to try this "old dog new trick". But I see it can be done with the techniques so well explained here. April way to go!! Subscribed
Have watched a number of your videos and wanted to say thanks. I'm a first year MTBer and your descriptions of the mechanics/technique has been really helpful.
My favorite moment(s) of the video: 1) The gap jumps with the Mtns in the background. 2) At the end when he jumps up on the bars! Great video, thanks Crankbrothers, I have your pedals on many of my bikes!
Doooode. I realized I’ve been popping off drops English bunny hop style, always landing differently. First try after watching your video I smashed my local trail’s biggest drop like butter over and over constantly. Keep up the awesome content!!!
Thank you so much April! I mean I know Kyle's tips, support, and leading helped. But watching you practice, improve, and walk through that fear is extremely helpful and inspiring for me! I reeeally want to work on my drops and learn how to do them properly and safely. I know I do the same as April and always hop off of it, then feel like I'm slamming into the ground. Thank you both!!
This comment did make me laugh, my Mrs is scared of even going on a bike so I normally ride alone hence I dont take risks but my daughter at the grand age of 26 has started coming out with me so I'll apply the tips given here. Great advice and immediately I'll stop hopping off the end of drops, thank you Kyle...
I'm kind of jealous on April, she is progressing in almost no time on things that took me months or even years. I just started to get confident on drops last year but did not try anything that big as the biggest. Now I got the tips I need! BTW, the quick progress from small to big is just ...wow...really impressive! Congrats to both of you on that!!
Dont feel too bad, she has so much experience from motocross that transfers over and it gives her a massive advantage. Thank you so much for the nice words though!
Hands down the best video on mtb I've ever seen. Something has clicked in my head and I am amped to put these teachings into practice. Had a bad crash off a small drop last week and after watching this I instantly know what I did wrong! Thank you so much for your videos. 5 stars!!!!
Wow! I’ve been coaching for 22 years, and you’re one of the better coaches I’ve seen. So good in fact, that April got you at 9:20; her drop was softer than yours! Great job guys! Lol
You two have one of the best mtb education channels on UA-cam. Gmbn help me starting out, but the details and excellent organization of your lessons are what I really need to progress, starting with this and your riding position video. Thanks so much!
I really enjoy mtn biking, I'm 74 years old and have used some of your Techniques such as the video showing how to corner, really noticed how much faster out of the turn I went and with better control. Will be trying some of the jumps this week after watching the video for hitting drops.
I finally had the ah ha moment with my drops today. My feet kept falling off the pedals and back tire landing first. I watch this video again while on the skills course and realized I was not far enough back when shifting back. A few times on the small drops and I started going off the middle drop. Thanks again For these how to videos. Also, I am hitting the jumps on Flow a lot better now from watching your vidz.
Thanks for the pointers ya'll, been bunny hopping off everything for years lol. Always had hardtails and just got my first trail bike coming, stoked to try this!
Want to thank the both of you for all the tips and instructions. My wife is just starting in the sport and gains confidence watching your content. Your patience and compassion for each other shines brightly in your sessions and is a great example for the sport and life as well. Best of luck on the new venture!
Im so much more motivated to do drops now. I can still count with my fingers how many dh biking I have done so far and friends have usually taken me to black or blue runs. 🙄 so everything is self taught and still learning as i go along. 😂
I've seen a lot of tutorials around but yours is the easiest to understand and lets the viewers know the wrong techniques. Keep up with the quality content.
Easily my favorite UA-cam channel for learning more about mountain biking! Kyle is such a great teacher and edits the video with helpful tips, lines, pauses etc. And April is such a great example of what it's like when you keep trying. Its really hard to expess how much I appreciate the valuable content and effort you guys provide for us. So here's a virtual hug for both of you >----(^_^)----< 😄
I'm not settling for a cutie who won't ride with me 😉 I'd love to see a more advanced drop video! There's a 4.5' footer to very slight transition at Ute Park here in Colorado Springs, and I'm terrified to hit it because it's extremely difficult to hit it with decent speed!
Watched a few of your how to videos lately. Love the straightforward approach and the real time results you see with April doing it. Very confidence inspiring
This was really well made. You're pretty talented at teaching and I appreciate the share. I've always been confused by hopping off the drop versus riding off the end with enough momentum to keep the front from diving. Out here in MA, many of the drops are hucks to flat off a rock. There is not always a nice downhill transition. Without the hop, it feels harder to keep the front end up to avoid landing nose first on a flat landing. Does the method change if there is no transition in the landing?
Thank you! Yeah thats a great question, I think there are a ton of different ways to do it and there isn't a (right or wrong) way per say, but personally i like to eliminate any movement that i can because it helps me maintain consistency. I will sometimes use a small wheel lift on the end of the drop if it is out of a corner and i am going slow or if its a really short distance to the landing and i would overshoot the landing if i carried more speed into the drop. On fast drops to flat i will usually use the same technique as in this video and just keep my head up and looking past the landing a little more to help keep my front end from dropping, on most slow speed drops or really tall, (4ft plus) drops to flat i will use a small compression at the end of the ramp and do a very slight wheel lift which will help keep me level in the air and then i will extend my legs and try to land rear wheel slightly first. If the landing has any transition to it though this is a bad idea as it will make the handlebars pull on your arms and you will have a little slap down landing and probably a little bit of pain in the back of your neck
I stumbled across you guys a few months ago. You are fantastic! Thanks to April for being willing to put it all out there. Thanks Kyle for being so patient! If I were that relaxed maybe my wife would still be biking with me. I’ve learned more patience as I’ve gotten older. You are lucky to have each other.
That was sooooo good!!! Love seeing the helpful tips, positive feedback and super impressive progression!!!! Great job to both of you!!! Now to see if I can get better on drops...2.5-3' is my limit, its my weakness and pretty sure I'm doing things wrong. Ha. Cheers!!!!
She's a pro moto x rider. Lots of cross over between the 2 sports and the huge sends on a moto make this stuff seem like child's play. She's gotta be pretty dang gutsy to have made it in the pro moto scene.
I have watched dozens of videos on how to drop. This video was the best I've seen and did a great job with showing the correct technique. I've subscribed.
I watch a ton of bike content since I got back in to riding last year. I have to say I’m glad UA-cam threw up your channel as a recommendation, nice easy to watch style and as many others have already said, watching you coach a ‘beginner’ is relatable (I say ‘beginner’ because she looks better than a beginner and seems to have the confidence to try things which many beginners lack). I’ve learnt something today and I’m gonna give this a try myself as I’ve never done drop offs properly before 👍 thanks you guys, looking forward to watching more from you both.
Thanks Matt! Glad you are enjoying the videos. I would say I am sometimes beginner/intermediate haha I have a Mx background and this is my third season riding MTB. So some stuff transfers over, some I have to re learn for MTB and some I have just simply never tried. -April
@@AprilRideMTB hi April, thanks for taking the time to reply. You’ve definitely got a good skill level, it didn’t feel right calling you a beginner. I’m working my way up to what you do so it’s good inspiration. Take care both of you in these troubled times.
This has always been one of my biggest fears - It's not been helped by me having a bad crash on a drop a few years ago. So lately I've been watching a lot of vids on "how to" with drops. Although all of them have been helpful, this is the best one I have seen for showing technique, conservation of movement, and probably best of all, a rider starting small with bad technique, and building up to a great end result. I still have a long way to go, but you guys have helped a lot. Thank you!
One thing to remember is that there are a ton of different riding styles and variable when it comes to drops, this is the method that has worked best for me and seemed to really click with April but there really isn't a definite one sized fits all approach to every drop. You two seem like a humble and easy going couple, and Kyle is really great at breaking down into steps that seem logic and are easy to follow. Can't wait to see what you come up with next!
Thank you Ingrid!
That was one of the most motivational mtb “how to’s” I have ever watched! I have been riding for decades and still find drops over 4 feet daunting. This video is a great help. Thanks 🙏🏻
Glad it helped! Thats so cool that you enjoyed it :) thanks for watching!!
Thank you so much Ashley, glad I can help inspire :)
I was proud of her seeing her do it!
Thank you!
Loving the content Kyle! Found you through paul the punter/your manual vid super helpful. Loving the humility man subbed
Awesome, thank you! I really appreciate that! I just try to have fun with it!
Really good video. The difference in technique between April’s first runs off the small drop and the big one at the end is incredible, she looks like a complete pro and the landing is lighter from the big drop than it was from the little one!
Definitely need to get out there and practise this as I think I still have a tendency to hop off drops.
thank you!
Thanks Kyle and Thanks April! Got into MTB this spring. This video helped me progress so much with my jumping. Did my first jumps last week and today I sent one that’s been looking at me for months. You two are a big part of the success! Thanks!
Great to hear! Thanks so much for watching :)
Great stuff, Kyle! Your way of explaining how to drop and manual makes it so much easier to understand the technique. And it's very helpful showing the most common errors and how to fix them.
Please make more of those!
Happy to help! thanks for the comment!
Your GF is a BEAST! This was exactly what I needed to go attack some drops that I have been avoiding for months and months. Thanks so much! #subscribed
Thanks so much for the Sub! Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you so much John, it is really helpful to have Kyle throughout my whole journey!!!
Nicely done and I like the stepwise approach from ‘how to’ to ‘actually doing it’. Thanks Kyle and April 👍🏽
Glad you liked it!
Anybody else get really proud when she did the big drop. Well done
Thanks :)
Nope.
I don't even know her, why would I be proud of her?
@@dangerous8333 Just dont comment then
I kid you not, when April dropped off the highest, I was not breathing!!!!
This was such a good video. I feel like I actually learned how to do this. Can’t wait to try it on some beginner stuff!
I'm so glad!
for someone who’s confidence took a beating after a bad crash a few years ago, I took so much out of this. thank you. time to get back on the bike!
Good luck vincent! Thank you so much for watching!
I can't give this enough of a thumbs up. Freaking awesome instruction and demonstration. Thanks Kyle and Great Job April!
Glad you liked it!
I feel like I learned a lot. I had resigned myself to believe I was too old to try this "old dog new trick". But I see it can be done with the techniques so well explained here. April way to go!! Subscribed
Mate I'm 54 and love learning new mtb stuff #nevertooold !
@@timrogers1068 Love it man, thanks for the encouragement. I'll try to remember your mantra. Cheers.
I was doing the same thing as April and never sure how I should approach a drop. Thank both you. Improving every ride with all your helpful videos
Thanks Randolf!
Have watched a number of your videos and wanted to say thanks. I'm a first year MTBer and your descriptions of the mechanics/technique has been really helpful.
Glad to help! Thanks so much Mark!
Dude!! This is one of the best how to videos on drops out there. Nicely detailed and explained well. Thank you 🤙🏽
I appreciate that! Thank you!
You seem like a good coach!
Thank you! I am learning a lot through these videos but just trying to share what i have learned from racing pro for almost 10 years!
You can see Kyle coaching Paul the Punter in his channel too! I remember when I saw him I scremed of excitement lmao
Because the best coach is LOVE :)
My favorite moment(s) of the video:
1) The gap jumps with the Mtns in the background. 2) At the end when he jumps up on the bars!
Great video, thanks Crankbrothers, I have your pedals on many of my bikes!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Doooode. I realized I’ve been popping off drops English bunny hop style, always landing differently. First try after watching your video I smashed my local trail’s biggest drop like butter over and over constantly. Keep up the awesome content!!!
That is so awesome to hear!
So glad you found this so helpful Brooke!
OMG. It’s maybe one of the best MTB Drop video teaching I have seen.
Glad you think so!
Best girlfriend ever! I can't get my misses to ride off a curb! Awesome teacher though, proper confidence inspiring.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks!
5 stars!!!!
That's awesome to hear! 😊
Wow! I’ve been coaching for 22 years, and you’re one of the better coaches I’ve seen. So good in fact, that April got you at 9:20; her drop was softer than yours! Great job guys! Lol
Thanks so much!
April just FLOWING off the big ramp in 1 day? Inspiration! What a great story. Proud of you.
Thanks so much Tom :)
You two have one of the best mtb education channels on UA-cam. Gmbn help me starting out, but the details and excellent organization of your lessons are what I really need to progress, starting with this and your riding position video. Thanks so much!
That’s great to hear, thanks Joel!
She has the right attitude! And you’re a great teacher. Well done.
Thank you! 😊
It put a big smile in my face when she succeeded the big drop. Great job!
Awesome, so glad it clicked for you!!!
my heart was literally racing when I saw her go for the big drop !! that is awesome ! hope to have the courage to do that some day !
Thanks Carla!
Thanks for the pointers ya'll, been bunny hopping off everything for years lol. Always had hardtails and just got my first trail bike coming, stoked to try this!
Now that just makes sense. Love the freeze frames. I think I can do this now and not take the chicken out.
Glad it was helpful!
Your channel literally relieves anxiety lol like you need to realize that great stuff
Haha thanks!
More coaching sessions with April. Love the content!
More to come! Wheelie video this week!
O yes...
Imagine how much better the world would be if everyone's middle finger had a smiling face on it :)
So true, especially right now!
😂😂
Want to thank the both of you for all the tips and instructions. My wife is just starting in the sport and gains confidence watching your content. Your patience and compassion for each other shines brightly in your sessions and is a great example for the sport and life as well. Best of luck on the new venture!
That is great to hear John, thank you for sharing!
Im so much more motivated to do drops now. I can still count with my fingers how many dh biking I have done so far and friends have usually taken me to black or blue runs. 🙄 so everything is self taught and still learning as i go along. 😂
Keep at it. You'll get it dialed in!
agree!!
This really helped me progress from the smaller to medium drops and stop hopping off of them
Thats awesome! Glad we could help!
I've seen a lot of tutorials around but yours is the easiest to understand and lets the viewers know the wrong techniques. Keep up with the quality content.
This is the content where I enjoyed, where I learned and I thought Me as in her place, Love for both ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
So here's a virtual hug for both of you >----(^_^)----<
😄
Wow, thanks! That means a lot :)
It's great how both of you feel proud each other the end of the day .
And its a plus makes us feel like we wanna do it .
Thank you, that's great to hear!
APRIL APRIL APRIL YOU ARE FREAKING AMAZING YOU GO GIRL
Thank you so much Nova!
I'm not settling for a cutie who won't ride with me 😉 I'd love to see a more advanced drop video! There's a 4.5' footer to very slight transition at Ute Park here in Colorado Springs, and I'm terrified to hit it because it's extremely difficult to hit it with decent speed!
yeah i will try to make one for those too!
Watched a few of your how to videos lately. Love the straightforward approach and the real time results you see with April doing it. Very confidence inspiring
That was awesome, well done April!
Thanks Christopher!
Nice job, April!!...I learned a ton from watching this.
I'm so glad! Thanks!
"Ride off the end" is a really good way of putting it. Mad respect on the progress!
@@AprilRideMTB That's great info. Sounds like I've got some practicing and experimentation to do!
Please don't take this badly but her last two drops looked better than yours 😲 sorry bro she's a beast 💯👊
haha no offense taken! she is a bamf haha!
I was looking the same :D
I stumbled across you guys a few months ago. You are fantastic! Thanks to April for being willing to put it all out there. Thanks Kyle for being so patient! If I were that relaxed maybe my wife would still be biking with me. I’ve learned more patience as I’ve gotten older. You are lucky to have each other.
Thank you Kurt! It is a skill to be on both sides of learning and teaching 😊
That was sooooo good!!! Love seeing the helpful tips, positive feedback and super impressive progression!!!! Great job to both of you!!! Now to see if I can get better on drops...2.5-3' is my limit, its my weakness and pretty sure I'm doing things wrong. Ha. Cheers!!!!
Thanks so much!!
Holy crap she learned so fast why can't I learn that fast??? 😣😣
It's all about commitment, if your learning curve is slow then you're afraid of fully sending it
Ikr she stomped that 🤪🤯😱
Plot twist: she was faking it and knew how to drop the whole time... 😂
Thank you!
Wow, one of my biggest fears. April was doing that big drop like a pro.
I need an April in my life
:'(
me too, so that we can go biking together :'(....Kyle sure is a lucky guy!
Get your girls into it. If someone told me I’d be doing stuff like this a couple of years ago I would have laughed. People can be inspired!
Actually went "hell ya!" when she nailed the big one 😂😂
Me too ! She's got guts.
APRIL YOU GOT GOOD SO FAST AT THIS
Thank you! It has been on my goal list for so long!
Great tutorial. You explained it very well and the visuals made it make so much sense. Kudos to April for being such a quick learner.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the reminder that she practiced off camera a lot. Nothing is instant
That is true!
Much better than gmbns one because instead of saying to manual you just showed to change your weight back 🙂
Thank you! Yeah i like to make stuff as simple as possible haha!
Thank you!
Damn.... I was quite nervous when she did the highest drop
Wow, her progression was impressive.
thanks! Yeah we were there for almost 4 hours haha, the video makes it seem short but she did so awesome!
