Thanks Jason for taking time to review the more available, value bourbons. I appreciate it when the whiskey tubers review stuff we can actually find. Cheers!

From Tasting Beer: "Research has shown that when wine judges are presented with white wine tinted with red pigments, their responses are not the expected peach and citrus, but bramble and berry. This is why it is not unheard of for wines and occasionally beer to be judged in black glassware."
Pretty awesome you're using black glassware to avoid making bias judgements! Although I personally find it really tough to tell whiskeys apart by their color as compared to wine or beer. I find the prices rise faster than the quality for many Bourbon options out there, so really appreciate the unbiased budget picks!

It does, but I hope it stays underrated. I am an old school WT101 fan. Been drinking it for years. I don’t want to have to chase it. I feel bad for old school Buffalo Trace/Blanton’s fans who can’t get there favorite whiskey anymore.

Old Forester Signature 100 Proof is totally a standby for me; pretty much anytime I hit the liquor store I replenish my supply. Wild Turkey 101 is also a long-time regular drink (since college), although I've gotten away from it recently as I've branched out to try some other Bourbons. I'd still like to give the Ezra Brooks 99 a try, but while I like peanuts and peanut butter, it isn't really one of my favorite bourbon flavor notes, so Old Tub sounds like I can give it pass without too much remorse. Thanks for a great video!

  • @wildlifewhiskey3636

I think 101 is the best value bourbon ever created.. for 18-25 it hits all the marks. Granted you could throw rare breed in there as well with the proof point. But 101 is great for casual to experienced drinkers and speaks for itself.

WT-101 used to be a staple for me when I lived in Taos. I'd go to Walgreen's and buy a 4-pack of U.S. Becks and to a hole-in-the-wall liquor store about 200 feet away and get a quarter-pint of WT-101. They always had some in the cool box. And those were my evening. Hey... it gets COLD at night from October through May! But now my stomach and gullet can't handle straight high-proof bourbon... and I won't dilute my bourbon.
So mostly I just pick up a couple of miniatures when I want whiskey. I don't touch strong liquor much.
    Great blind tasting, though!

Yep, those are all the typical flavors in those products. To me I just do not like banana + cherry together, and if it's alcohol forward a bit it turns Luden's medicinal. I usually choose OF last. I don't want as much peanut as Old Tub but OGD BiB or OGD 114 would probably win out over Ezra. Most times I pick out the OGD over WT, but I tend to just go back and forth between the two. A bunch of times the WT funk is there and I pick it second.

Howdy Duane, you've come the right place! Lots of great content on this channel. I think Elijah Craig small batch is a GREAT pick for someone new to bourbon...especially if you are trying to avoid the 'burn' of alot of the higher proof stuff that folks dig. Craig is a fav. I have one other suggestion: Evan Williams Single Barrel. Its usually priced similar to the Elijah Craig, hovering around $30. It was my gateway bourbon and one i revisit a lot. Its a lower proof at 87 BUT it is one of overall few bourbons (especially value bourbons) that always states its age...used to be 10 year old but with the bourbon boom its averaging 8ish years for whats out there. Its got flavor for days, wont break the bank, and isnt super 'alcohol' tasting thanks to the proof, and you can find it most everywhere (even grocery stores or targets).

Bourbon can't contain any additives. Bourbon is actually the most prescriptive spirit in the world as wood type, dominant grain, wood treatment, barrel entry proof, and minimum age are all specified. Basically the only thing you can do to color outside the lines is to use finishing wood and that has to be clearly specified on the label.

Unfortunately in NY this would have to be labeled a $30 and under review. Prices always slightly higher here. Old Tub and Old Forester 100 might even be $35 most places. But I love the Old Tub and recently tried OF100 for the first time and really liked it. WT101 is solid but only have Rare Breed in stock now.

Have you tasted inconsistencies with Old Tub from bottle to bottle? Is this one of the better Old Tub bottles?

@@TheMashandDrum have you considered blending it with a sweet jammy or chocolate noted bourbon? I have this amazing Russel Single Barrel that tastes like PB&J (one of my favorites).

I’ve emptied 3 bottles of Old Tub, with help from friends. I’ve enjoyed every pour and have had no complaints.

Old Tub isn't a smashing name. A limited release from last year that is still available doesn't speak highly of its reputation. I will stick with my Early Times as my daily drinker. It's hard to beat at $19.95 a liter though I do like the Old Forester 100 quite a bit.

Blind test WT 101 vs EW BiB.
For me it depends on the day, EW BiB wins more often.

I havent liked EW BiB lately. Thats why I didnt include it. May need to find a newer bottle.

@@TheMashandDrum I had tried it a few years ago and I didn't think much of it, but I bought a bottle last month and I am really enjoying it. It's probably my preference that has changed more than the contents, but could have been a great year

I never taste the peanut that everyone talks about with Jim beam products, which is kind of a bummer because I love peanuts.
