@@tokyochannel2020 C'mon, you can do better than that ... "Kaga" was an ancient province of Japan, now corresponding to the current Ishikawa Prefecture, after which the original "Tosa"-class battleship was named when she was laid down in 1920. Starting with the "Satsuma" (the first battleship to be built in Japan, in 1905), the Imperial Japanese Navy named their battleships after provinces-- earlier ships were built in foreign yards and named after mountains, shrines, or poetic names for Japan (e.g., "Yashima"). She was chosen to be converted into an aircraft carrier to replace the incomplete battlecruiser "Amagi" that was wrecked in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, as the only other very-long capital ship hull available (the "Tosa" was slated for disposal in compliance with the 1922 Washington Treaty and used as a target before being scuttled in 1925). The IJN named their cruisers and battlecruisers after mountains (e.g., Mount Akagi). A possible exception can be cited for the armored cruiser "Izumo", a pre-Russo-Japanese War ship built in Great Britain, named for the ancient Izumo Province, now part of Shimane Prefecture. The 22DDH and 24DDH "destroyers" (design authorized by the Japanese Ministry of Defense in 2011 and 2013, or the years "Heisei 22" and "24") were named "Izumo" and "Kaga" respectively, ostensibly as these were the largest IJN warships to be involved at the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, and were actually attacked by Chinese forces (which inflicted no damage). Hope this helps.
Wow...if my grandfather had seen the Kaga sailing into San Diego he'd flip out! Last time he knew about a ship named Kaga he was watching the dive bombers leave the deck of the Enterprise on the way to sink her. Times have changed.

She is probably docked in Coronado North Island since there are facilities to handle big ships. I don’t know if there are facilities at Naval Base San Diego (32nd St) that could receive a ship that large.
I notice there are no F35s on deck. Did they strike them below or bingo to the beach? She’s a beautiful ship. When can we expect a South Korean carrier?

The Imperial Japanese Navy was a emperor's navy. So they had a chrysanthemum emblem. But, JMSDF is not a imperial navy, so there is no imperial emblem.
To show respect to the place they are visiting, they fly the flag of the place they are visiting, and their own naval ensign is hoisted at the stern of their ship.

Our two nations have come a LONG way in 70 or 80 yrs. Beautiful to see!
Great Warship, Japan, ❤
She's marvelous. Back from another carrier trials and testing with the F-35 Lightning II.
Welcome Kaga and crew. Fair winds and following seas!
Best quality from Japan! Hat offs!
What a beautiful destroyer, with a flat top, and aircraft, named after one of Japan’s most famous aircraft carriers.
I believe this ship is what is called an assault carrier. Helicopters, F-35s, troops, etc. Kind of like the USS Boxer.
She identified herself as a "destroyer," so I'll respect that.
Named after Mount Kaga not its WW2 ship. The WW2 was also names after Mt Kaga.

This is how it all starts.....history repeats itself.....first you have common enemy then you arm them.....happened in Iraq and Afghanistan.....
My question is why is Kaga flying the stars and stripes??
When calling at an American port, the American flag, the Stars and Stripes, is flown to show respect. The reverse is also true.
The national Jack is flown from the stern while a visitor flies the flag its visiting on the mainmast
Didn't go so well for the 1st "kaga"...😁
日本に帰るんですね?
This ship has a funny name in spanish
Isn't it traditional for a Japanese warship to have a stylized Chrysanthemum Flower on their bow?
The Imperial Japanese Navy was a emperor's navy. So they had a chrysanthemum emblem.
But, JMSDF is not a imperial navy, so there is no imperial emblem.
Please note that our United States flag flies from the starboard yard, in partnership with Japan's on port!
The Japanese Navy has arrived in California. Someone tell John Belushi.
interesting that they are displaying the war flag. Some are spinning in their graves up at Ft Rosecrans.
