Love this show, love your input on all levels, but, alas,, you,, were,,, in,,,LA. Just flew to Denver, Co and back. Both trips plane packed full. Everybody is angry. But cant tell you why. I play guitar and smile a lot😎 As with a couple other shows, Thank You for letting someone like me now what real life is like living as a musician, and being in Nashville, Tn. Your info is more than just entertainment. It is valid and pertinent for people to see the driving force behind a musician and his life choice.
Hey Jedd I agree the state of the music industry is a double edge…it’s the best of times, it’s the worst of times. Back when I became an active music fan, I bought the records ( 8 tracks, cassettes, books, concert tickets) and the artist got…something. It was flawed, but that is how the audience participated in the experience. Interaction was as an enthusiastic face in the crowd, or perhaps a few words exchanged sidestage between sets. Now, the artist has to almost gives away their art, but through your generosity of time and spirit, and the link through the web, we share a truer relationship, a community, and have an opportunity to show our support directly. Flawed, but beautiful.
Man, I’ve gotten that so many times. Of all the players to get that line, you’re the last one I’d expect. Relatedly, I was doing a session in New York once and the producer said what I was playing was “too musical”. So, can’t please everybody I guess?
Thanks for your videos Jedd! Although I live in Southern California, I don’t live in Los Angeles. I’m sorry you had a couple of bad encounters with uptight people. Unfortunately, that’s more of the norm here than the exception.
nah its all good mate, I dont carry that stuff around. I just find it interesting fodder for speculation :) I miss living in Santa Cruz, I love it up there
Jedd , from the first time i watched your playing it was obvious You have your own style and sound . Your playing was compelling , and I immediately subscribed . Im from the West coast and have been a fan of the Nashville sound since Chet was king . Do Nashville's players have one thing in common I'd say yeah they're very good with a lot of variety . keep up the vid's really enjoy your comments & playing !
Hey Jedd, sorry to hear it was a stressful week but glad you made it home in one piece. It's such a joy for me to watch your content and I look forward to each YT release. Do you have any upcoming shows around the Nashville area? I hated I missed your show a few weeks ago but I plan to drive up and see you soon. I'm just north of the Alabama/Tennessee line so Nashville is pretty close. Take care Buddy!
Heard you tonight for the first time singing Lay Lady Lay, beautifully. So I’ll have a listen to more and have subscribed. Looking at comments it appears that you have a lot of genuine followers/listeners. Please don’t let one individual’s random comment phase you - it serves no useful purpose in your life to dwell on such things. Move forward with the positivity that you generate. Thank you 🦋
I don’t agree w this at all but the only thing I can think of; is Nashville is maybe too polished ? Maybe they wanted a more raw rock sound to their americana project ; like yankee hotel foxtrot or something. Once again I don’t agree; and I think you play so wonderfully, your song writing and playing is just unmatched. Thank you for sharing your talent and creations w us !
Hey Jedd, I have no doubt in my mind that you played what you felt the song needed and that it came from a genuine honest place in your heart. It sounds too Nashville, what exactly does that mean? How did that affect your playing for the rest of that day or even that week? Being such an experienced pro I suppose you just knuckle down and get on with it. I think UA-cam is a God sent, because it let's me and thousands of others see how a great musician like yourself thinks about music , your approach to playing the instrument , a look at the gear you use and all the other nerdy stuff we guitar players love. You deserve a lot more notoriety imo. Love you man and keep up the good work.
The best compliment any guitarist can have is when he can play 3 notes or 3 chords and just about everyone can identify the player instantly. Who hires a Nashville guitarist and asks him to play way outside of his box of tricks anyway 🤔
If a Producer is telling you that you sound a certain way but can't tell you what that sound is... And even has a name for it... I think he's being a bit of a nob! You sound like you every day of the week! 😎🤘
To me, the ‘producer’ (yuk, yuk), sounds like someone who truly couldn’t identify what he was going for (or had no clue), which made it impossible for him to articulate said goal, and then thought that by saying what he said he’d sound intelligent. Failed on all counts (remember, you can’t fix stupid). I wouldn’t lose sleep over it! Keep doing what you’re doing just like you’ve been doing!!!
Really a weird comment. I've been watching and listening to you now for a years or so, which means catching up on a lot of music older than a year, and I've never seen, or heard you do anything but you. Thanks for sharing your music, Jed.
you are a tasty player, so it is always nice to see and hear what you are doing - maybe share how you are putting a piece together, different voicings, embellishments, etc would be an idea
I'm sorry you had those experiences. You, Tom.. Guthrie are all unique and gifted. It's funny some people jump on LA right away for that junk. I've lived in the NY area, LA for a long time and now in Nashville. There are good people (and jerks) in all places. I met some of the most genuine and kind people in my time in LA... many giving me a helping hand in the business too. Something I have not found in Nashville. I told a producer here I liked what he did with the vocal and asked what he put on the strip. He snapped at me like " I'm not telling you my secrets". Anyway... most people out there and here .. are not from the area anyway.
Don’t think there is such a thing as sounding to Nashville! And if there is it’s got to be a good thing! For me Nashville has so much variety and diversity of styles, at least these days. The level of competence, creativity and diversity of styles coming out of Nashville is second to none! I live on the West Coast in the SF Bay Area we have a pretty decent music scene here but I wouldn’t compare it to Nashville or LA. I wonder whether that producer has ever told a musician they sound to “LAish”? Sorry you had to run into an inconsiderate, angry jerk on your flight home Jedd! But very glad you did make it home with your guitar intact! Hope you can get some sleep to get un sidewaysed and de jet lagged! Great to see you back! Welcome home! Hope we can hear what you were up to in LA at some point in the future.
When you said too Nashville I thought the same. Then I needed an example of what was being played to get a little context. But then you said that you couldn't get an explanation out of the guy and I didn't need the example. That to me sounds like a dig. Being in the position that he's in, he should to be able to communicate with ease what he's looking for. Or he's new at it understand. I bet that loft feels pretty cozy right now after that schedule 😊 Your channel is definitely a channel Jedd. Tom's channel is pretty low key and I really enjoy it but there's a calm and relaxed feel with yours, which makes perfect sense with your style. If you enjoy Lanois....can you recommend any others in that group. I made a playlist awhile back with Eno, Harold Budd, some Frisell, alot of Japanese environmental, ect. I also added some church piano hyms and a little voice added in in-between the compositions (Mazzy Star...Anna St. Louis and Cat Power.) I've absolutely fallen in love with all of it and can't get enough. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations Take care bud😊
Jedd, I would have thought sounding “too Nashville” would be about guitar tone. I would expect someone who uses all the Buk staples - Nobels, Lightspeed, Brigadier, M9, etc - to receive a criticism like that, but not you. I love how you seek out your own gear for expression & tailor it for your voice on the instrument. If you were a copycat, I’m sure you’d get more work like you alluded to, but I admire your artistic integrity. Self expression, maybe another reason for your channel. Thanks for sharing your music with us.
Man you sound good on that Dusey. You're a Nashville guy, seems that's what they should want if they bring you in. People are just wound too tight these days. Seems everyone is having a hard time staying in their own lane, the guitar in overhead was none of that guys business
I feel like I hear a lot of Nashville guys talk about how tired they are of playing the open 10th chords. I guys they might say that sounds too Nashville if I had to pick something haha
i was just laughing with my wife the other day about how many of my friends now LOVE this 'americana' genre but still insist that they hate country music. i listened to some and was like uhhh guys i'm pretty sure this is country.... i looked again after your question and the only thing i can come up with is maybe modern country is considered more rock and pop and americana would be like alt rock and classic country? so maybe they were trying to say the part sounded a little too rock? like a cleaner tone / less effects? or maybe a more stripped back part so it feels more classic / less professional? lol... i dunno. alt people wanting to sound different but not knowing why or how. sorry about the rough week and love the opener! cheers
Hey Jedd. I commend you for keeping your cool with the guy on the plane. I think I might have lost my temper if someone gave me shit for stowing my guitar in the overhead. That’s what they’re for! What an asshat that guy was. I totally get the the feeling of having a career with “stops and starts.” There have been several times in my life when I was in close reach of taking a major step forward in my career as a musician only to have things go sideways… either due to my own fuckup or due to outside circumstances derailing things. I guess all one can do is try and keep some forward momentum and take solace in the fact that we get to play music at all. And God knows you do it so so well. Darin
Leave it to some wack job in L.A. to say it sounds too Nashville. News flash, Nashville is now by and large home to the best of the best when it comes to musicians. The hottest music in the market is and has been Nashville made and based stuff for a while now. G=For me, a hardcore Blues and Blues Rock man, when Bonamassa took a place in Nashville, to compliment his places in Cali and NYC, I knew the triad was now perfect for a musician like him. I'm not in any way knocking my faves in L.A. of which there are many. It's just the whole California attitude has existed for as long as I can recall. I had a branch of my business in San Fran and L.A. while my main business was here in Chicago. I always loved going to Cali, but the people are weird in so many ways. LOL As far as your plane ride home Jedd, one of the bonuses in our club is we get to remain calm, cool, and collected while others lose their shyte over really silly stuff. I used to take the red eye from San Fran to Chi pretty often. I ran across some real characters over all those years. Lots of fun memories and lots of cringe too. I'm glad you do you, just like Tom. That's the main reason I'm a big fan. No pressure man, do what you can when you can. We ain't going nowhere. Cheers
I never cared for Southern California.. L. A.. I think they’re kinda too concerned with passing fads… So maybe that producer didn’t have a taste for good music… But he didn’t know how to express what he did have a taste for… His loss..in the long run..
As far as 'Too Nashville' - I don't think it matters what he meant. lol Playing guitar for other people, I find I can't be married to anything. If it's an idea I LOVE, and they don't - then great I save that for one of my tunes. lol I would just look at this as "I don't dig that part for this song, what else do you have in your toolkit" and don't take it personal. They wanted you on the session for a reason, remember that. You have more than that one part
Hi Jedd, thank you for sharing! I've seen an older video of you playing "Lay Lady Lay" its an awesome cover you did. My question is what brand of guitar is it you were playing? It is very unique looking but sounded fantastic. Do you still own it? It was @ Music City Roots live from the Loveless Cafe on 11.09.2011. I keep listening to it, you sound great. As always great playing and stories. Take care, be well
As a rock/metal transplant new to the palette of sonic flavors associated with Nashville, when hear a dominant 7th or some pre-bend/release notes Im sometimes guilty of hearing that - but never in a bad way. I have the utmost appreciation and admiration for those flavors since I have a really hard time using them myself without sounding cliche. but if it wasn’t anything like that, I have no idea what he was going for 🤔 then again, I’m an audio engineer and have had people tell me they want their vocal more “purple” in the mix, so I guess anything goes when interpreting studio lingo? lol 😁
Too Nashville? Maybe dude is too LA…. The world is very short of a lot of things at the moment, but are aresoles isn’t one of them! And I’ve spent the last 2 weeks down an Arcadie/Lanoir rabbit hole. Thanks Jedd.
I haven't owned or even watched a TV since July 2011. Since then, UA-cam has been the #1 way that I find new music/musicians. Heck, I discovered you by pure accident. About 10 years ago I was searching YT for a live version of the song 'Big Blue Sky' by a British Celtic-folk-rock band called 'Coast'. Obviously, since the song titles are the same, UA-cam presented me with a live version of your song. I clicked on that video, and I've been a fan ever since. That video is still on UA-cam today: ua-cam.com/video/o-TGMQFAhBs/v-deo.html Besides being a great song, I was blown away by your playing style, and if that's what "sounding too Nashville" is, I say keep it coming.
Geez man, you’ve had a bad week. Americana, is a conglomerate of many styles of music. The producer probably had his own idea of what he thought the music should sound like. That’s not his call though. You’re the player and a hella of a player I might add! Glad you’ve stepped up the content! Cheers Jedd!
Hey jedd, that producer was just talking out his ass. Don’t sweat it. I’d take it as a compliment. Plus you’re from Nashville, he hired you . I’d think that Nashville sound would be musical and to the point. Most LA music people are toxic minus just a few exceptions.
I figure if someone can’t articulate what they are looking for musically then I don’t lose sleep over it. Communication is tricky and if you did what you could to try and understand what he meant then it isn’t really on you. Part of being an effective producer is being able to communicate what you want for the project. “Too Nashville” doesn’t mean anything. All it means is “that’s not what I’m looking for”. I look at it like this…a studio musician is like a dictionary. It helps to know what word you’re looking for.
Glad you made it home safe Jedd! I remember that intro from you playing it in a video some time ago. It'll make a great song. Until around 5 years ago I would have associated chicken picken twangy Tele playing with the Nashville sound at least in terms of guitar. You can chalk that up to my ignorance of how diverse the Nashville music scene is. Now I don't think you can pigeon hole it at all. I definitely see your playing as waaay more than one thing. Anyway, why would a producer fly a Nashville musician in if they're not looking for some idea they have of "Nashville sound?" Cheers mate
Can't put it very well Jedd but if youtube helps guys like you, Uncle Larry and Guthrie at all, we the punters are the big winners. We get close up exposure to some of the best guitar players on the planet. And some laughs too. There'll be the occasional dickhead who tries to spoil it but Tom and Guthrie have learned to deal with that. Love the intro.
Too Nashville is an interesting one, because most of what I hear coming out of Nashville these days sounds like rock guitar to me. Obviously the musicianship is very high but, I think it's in a lot of ways less identifiable from a regional perspective than it was 20-30 years ago. I think you're probably one of the players who sounds least like the typical "today" Nashville session guys.
To me, early Americana reminded me of Neil Young w Crazy Horse. I don’t think it’s that way so much anymore but that’s the sound I remember when I was heavily into that sound. So a bit of a dirtier sound. That’s my take anyway.
Everyone's life is a series of starts and stops. It's all about getting back up; getting back in the fight. And you've always done that. You should be proud of yourself. Now, as far as "too Nashville" goes... I'd be willing to bet that that comment just came out wrong. I've been in that situation before. Until it's out of your head, and in Pro Tools, the pressure of being in the studio can be unbearable. My friend Charlie (the drummer on that second record I asked you to listen to), is a jazz drummer (many records to his credit). I remember telling him once that what he was playing sounded "too jazzy". Even now, I shudder to think I actually said that. LOL. Anyway, I'll betcha what the artist was trying to say was that, what you were playing, wasn't what he was hearing in his head... and then of course he stupidly associated your part with where you're living. He could just as easily have said it sounded "a little too Australian". Artists... you can't live with 'em. You can't pay your mortgage without 'em.
Studio stories are always interesting. Typically a player is hired for what they bring to the table. You said you played a part that came to you from instinct. Then you get the " too nashville" comment.( which is a small favor - Jedd in the Shed merch tagline??? Also, when are we getting a Jedd Drive, drive pedal?) While it seems like it stung a little, what was the actual result in your playing? Did you go in a completely different direction or get pulled out of your comfort zone? Odd producer comments like that can challenge a person's professionalism, I'd imagine. Either way, I'm thankful you share your playing on the ol' YT.
could've responded with "that's such an L.A. thing to say"... or match his geographical barb with "what city are you wanting to hear like I came from/ Cleveland?"
Jedd, I was listening to the live “shaver” record today “unshaven”. Do you like Eddy Shaver? Do you think he is the baddest mofo ever? Do players in Nashville talk about him? Just curious, thanks!!

Sounds a bit like a flex on his part I think - to establish dominance or something.

Love this show, love your input on all levels, but, alas,, you,, were,,, in,,,LA. Just flew to Denver, Co and back. Both trips plane packed full. Everybody is angry. But cant tell you why. I play guitar and smile a lot😎
As with a couple other shows, Thank You for letting someone like me now what real life is like living as a musician, and being in Nashville, Tn. Your info is more than just entertainment. It is valid and pertinent for people to see the driving force behind a musician and his life choice.
UR a superb dude..................
I just find it interesting fodder for speculation :)
I miss living in Santa Cruz, I love it up there
Jedd , from the first time i watched your playing it was obvious You have your own style and sound .
Sounds great!
Dude...
You were in L.A.😂🤣
Everything is too Nashville.🤙
Hey Jedd. You are a great player.
Just heard some Adam Wright songs, and the track with Jedd. Man, that guy can write lyrics
Hey Jedd I don't have a clue what the producer meant by it sounds to Nashville. You're a heck of a guitar player.
Bridge nasally pickup with super poppy slappy picking sounds would be my interpretation of Nashville sounds.
Great singer too!
I think UA-cam is a God sent,
because it let's me and thousands of others see how a great musician like yourself thinks about music , your approach to playing the instrument , a look at the gear you use and all the other nerdy stuff we guitar players love. You deserve a lot more notoriety imo. Love you man and keep up the good work.
And also Jedd your tone is to die for.
Beats working at the post office.
The best compliment any guitarist can have is when he can play 3 notes or 3 chords and just about everyone can identify the player instantly.
Who hires a Nashville guitarist and asks him to play way outside of his box of tricks anyway 🤔
Maybe not "country" enough. Maybe too much rock. That's what I would think if I heard "too Nashville." Great playing and I loved the intro.
Twang man,twang . That’s what he meant.
I seem to associate "chicken pickin''" as the Nashville sound....
you are a tasty player, so it is always nice to see and hear what you are doing - maybe share how you are putting a piece together, different voicings, embellishments, etc would be an idea
I bet that loft feels pretty cozy right now after that schedule 😊
Your channel is definitely a channel Jedd.
Louis and Cat Power.)
I've absolutely fallen in love with all of it and can't get enough.
I would greatly appreciate any recommendations
Take care bud😊
Nice Duesy!
And you can always fire us.
If it's an idea I LOVE, and they don't - then great I save that for one of my tunes. lol
I would just look at this as "I don't dig that part for this song, what else do you have in your toolkit" and don't take it personal.
Yup! Lots of tightly wound people out there! You need to keep your own moat around you.
Sound too much like Nashville is surely better than sounding too much like LA. Sharp as a bowling ball that boy.
Jeddah, you should have responded by playing something that was " too Bakersfield"..😏
Very angry man... poor guy!
Could have been worse ..you could have sounded too LA..😂. And your favorite guitar player is ..?? …Keep on keeping on young man 👍🎸
To me, early Americana reminded me of Neil Young w Crazy Horse.
Question is “old Nashville “ or “New Nashville” ? Or maybe he meant Knoxville!😀
What was that cool song at the beginning?
Maybe you need a "producer switch" on your guitar like Leland Sklar has on his bass. 😉
Jedd, I was listening to the live “shaver” record today “unshaven”. Do you like Eddy Shaver? Do you think he is the baddest mofo ever? Do players in Nashville talk about him? Just curious, thanks!!
