  • This project was a whole lot of fun and a big learning experience for me. I think it came out great, especially for a first construction-based project. The main cost incurred with this project is buying the lear corrugated paneling. A cheaper option would be to build the from the same way, but a clear plastic greenhouse "wrap". It won't last as long but will save you a lot of money.

    Two suggestions...
    1. use 4 way deck blocks to make the base more stable.
    2. Add a open & closeable vent to be able to control heat and moisture and reduce mold

    This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

    I am pretty handy with power tools and have done a few small projects around the house such as tables, shelves, etc., but I have never attempted to do a project this big. However, after seeing your video, I am sure I can do this. My husband can help me when I need an extra set of hands, but truly, your video shows that this is not a difficult project. Also, the tone of your instructions and the details offer confidence to beginners. Thanks so much.

    My husband built this greenhouse for me, using this video tutorial! We added a ventilation system from the front and back. I am uploading a full tour of it on Monday. Thanks for the wonderful design, we absolutely love it and hope to encourage more people to come to this video and use this building plan!!

    I would love a green house & this is beautiful i would probably consider installing some cement because of the snow and probably use treated lumber to slow the inevitable rotting at least on the foundation.
    Love the direction you are taking the show. I am pregnant RN with my first child & I would really appreciate a build related to babies. Really doesnt matter what I'll leave that up to you. :)

    Nice project. I'm inspired. However, doll face, one addition that needs-NEEDS- to be done is ventilation. Need at least one roof vent, or gable vents, and maybe a window that opens in the door. No ventilation means 100+ degree temps inside=dead plants/disease.

    Add some vents so that you don't have to babysit the greenhouse. You'll need plenty of air circulation. The plants will fry if exposed to high heat for too long. Keeping the door open will help, but that will also invite critters. I also agree with others about the possibility of the greenhouse blowing over. But you could address that in a variety of simple ways. Not criticizing your work, I just know from experience of building commercial greenhouses. Overall, it looks good!

    • @ModernBuilds
      @ModernBuilds  7 років тому +29

      Thanks Scott. Yeah it's one of those things with lack of experience. I assumed just cracking the door would be ok, but if it's still too warm or not enough air circulation, i'll add a vent as it needs it

      AWh! same here. Also, as I mentioned on my own reply, more details on the kind of screws, for both the frame and the corrugated cover and siding part. You go to a big box home store and you are faced with a whole aisle and you can ask, but most of the time they don't know anymore then you do, has been my experience.

    one remark from a structural engineer: since the greenhouse is in the open field, and there is (as far as i can see) hardly any foundation, I'll give it one good storm before the whole thing falls over. you could simply add some weight (concrete) to the bottom of your walls to prevent this.

    • @ModernBuilds
      @ModernBuilds  7 років тому +57

      It's not in an empty field, it kinda looks like that from most of the camera angles, but there's a tree line next to and behind the greenhouse that block a decent amount of wind. In fact last Wednesday i think it was, we had a rain/hail storm with 60 mile and hour winds with up to 80mph gusts and it held up fine.

    • @mark.esposito
      @mark.esposito 7 років тому +22

      Ruudjuh08 is right about is. Check out some online wind load calculators. You'd be surprised at how much force it can generate. For example, a direct crosswind on a 9'x9' wall can generate well over a 1000 pounds of force. I'm sure the winds in Oklahoma can be pretty intense. I'd hate to see your hard work go to waste. I loved the build and the podcast though, looking forward to the next one! :)

    • @lecobra418
      @lecobra418 7 років тому +7

      A concrete floor isn't that difficult nor pricer to do, you should consider doing it to bolt that shed on to prevent it from flying away.
      Even if this is unlikely to happen... You'd never know when/if it might happen.

    3:25 - That tip about the rubber washers was very useful. I have to make a rain guard for my bird feeders and planning to use this corrugated plastic roof.
    3:31 - Foam closures, hallelujah! I thought this only came in wood which would let in water.
    Why did you use white corrugated plastic below and not clear? Design looks?
    The greenhouse looks fantastic! Love it! However:
    No wood protection at all - no stain, poly, spar varnish...? The sun and rain will rot the wood, especially when you have to water the plants inside sitting on the wood shelves. Why not a plastic shelving structure inside, with a sand and decomposed granite floor area? Inside will get very muddy.
    No ventilation vents and you need good air flow to prevent mold and mildew, black rot, rust, fusarium wilt, verticillium wilt, etc. So many fungal diseases. How about some vents with a small fan?
    Thanks for a nice demo!

    I came here to see what the structural engineers, building engineers, Tom Silva's, professional greenhouse builders, drill professionals, nail professionals, stud professionals and the "I've never made one but you're wrong" engineers said. I wasn't let down. I've never seen someone getting so much shit for a freaking greenhouse!

    when it gets hot, I think you'll need exhaust and ventilation.

    • @ModernBuilds
      @ModernBuilds  7 років тому +8

      Yeah, The plan right now is just to open the door a bit. If that's not enough, I thought installing a simple window on the back of the greenhouse would provide some good cross ventilation.

      They make a solar fan with a thermostat that should help.

    • @ModernBuilds
      @ModernBuilds  7 років тому +17

      It came out to about $650, but the majority of that cost were in the corrugated panels... a little over $400 worth

      I do. We actually had a storm earlier in the week with 60 mph winds and hail and it held up fine. I was a bit worried before that, but knowing that it made it through that fine, I expect it to be ok
