As usual, good content and tips. But, phew, that brings back bad memories of repairing a 3 tab roof over for a family friend who could not afford a new roof. It was a gambrel she-shed, and most of the transition shingles were damaged or blown off, as well as many flapping tabs. There were actually 3 layers on the top, which was also really too shallow for shingles in the first place (maybe a 2/12). To make it better, someone had also slapped hot tar along most of the transition, making it quite difficult to tear off without tearing up a lot of neighboring shingles. Got it done... I'm sure not "right", but good enough to buy them some time. It was quite frustrating to say the least, but worth it to help them out, and good learning experience.
Nice repair brother. As for the Dewalt nailer I've gotta tell you, I've used that gun for over a year now and it seems nice first few days but then the jamming get more annoying. I highly recommend the milwaukee cordless nailer. For small repairs that is.. keep up the good work.
Watching from California. Not likely to do much roofing but a few repairs. I’ve worked fora roofer, but mostly did carpentry for him. Then most roofs I”ve actually put up are tin (in Hawaii). Did a shingle roof years ago with my dad. Enjoying the content. Merry Christmas and thank you!
I told you you would like it. We also use it to nail the drip edge on dry in day Cougar Paws makes a little sticker with foam on it that you can attach to it so it doesn’t slide off the roof. Framer works even better.
Hey Brian!! Another great video!! Always super informative. Maybe a video for you to make......all of the different sealants, which can be exposed to elements, and which are just for bonding....a list of tools (I know you always link the hammer and such, lol) that you prefer over which ones you don't care for. Just a thought. Thanks again for sharing your expertise!!!!
Nice long detailed videos are great no need to shorten or edit a bunch. We have control to fast forward if we need to. Repair work is always helpful but when you get back into full season some start to finish full roof replacements would be nice too even if it has to be split in multiple videos
I got the same caulking gun that you’re using. A real lifesaver! The cheap guns I get at the Big Box store make caulking a chore - tired wrists at the end of the day.
The Pitch Hopper also uses foam to grip the shingled roof. A bit pricey at $120, but I liked the ability to sit on it when I got tired of leaning or squatting. Dayum, looking very cold out there. What’s worse, summer heat or winter freezing? In your opinion. PS, I like that you so real work on real roofs. Some of the instructional videos I’ve watched have the company owner or his instructor working on a model roof, on the ground. Many times they’re small surfaces, too; so they can’t accurately display some detail (they run out of real estate on the model). Thanks, Los Angeles CA
I prefer the summer heat. The days are longer with more light, so we can start earlier to beat the heat. We can also get down under a shade tree and cool off with some water.
I agree, real world instruction is better than the mini-micro mock up roof in a warehouse or garage. I appreciate the effort these people make to spread the knowledge either way... but real world examples are always more valuable. I have done several repairs on roofs but I still feel the need to learn more of the finer details of flashing walls and other details on more complicated roofs. This channel really helped me get the nail patterns right, something I was doing wrong before. Where in LA are you? I'm in SFV.
@@DanielinLaTuna I'm just a few miles from you. 2 & 210 I had a friend that lived halfway up La Tuna Canyon, beautiful area. I used to hike from DeBell golf course in Burbank to the top of La Tuna when I was much younger and more fit.
The Dewalt roofing nailer is awesome. Came with 1 battery. Charges faster than you think. Maybe 1/2 hour. Never had a problem. I find that straight shots sink the nail good. Angles under other shingles you have to make sure it’s all the way down. I can’t remember how many bundles on a charge but was a lot more than I thought with that little battery. Maybe 4. Milwaukee just came out with one also. It looks like it might give some competition.
I have slid and fallen off a roof a couple times in my twenty three years. If I know i'm going over, I jump so my feet hit first and break my fall. Never had a major accident or injury.
you do awesome job on videos. I think you have a bunch in shingles, can you give us some pointers on flashing? (esp where there is existing wooden siding that is in the way)? thanks
What are your comments on installing peel and stick base and cap sheet over a complete new re-roof? I understand that normally we would usually put the peel and stick rolled Roofing on patio covers and awnings that are almost flat that if you’re gonna do a full complete reinstall of a roof, you would want to use torch down, but I would like other opinions ?? 5:15
Hi Brian, love the videos and pro-tips! I’m up in Seattle. Would like to see a ridge and hip “tune up”. Do you come across Presidential Certainteed shingles or high quality that only need the ridge shingles replace? 20 year old or so were the field is still all good, but the bend of the ridge shingles have a massive crease and even split. Thanks Brian!
If you did a roof over and I’m not saying you would but would you put felt paper down over the old shingles before putting the newer layer of shingles on? Or would you just put the shingles on directly over the old shingles?

Did you ever fall off a roof? "of course, I'm a roofer' How far did you fall? "All the way to the ground"
I have slid and fallen off a roof a couple times in my twenty three years. If I know i'm going over, I jump so my feet hit first and break my fall. Never had a major accident or injury.
Its not if you fall its when you fall and all roofers know you will be fired right before you hit the ground
Falling off the roof is no joke, its never happened to me, but I've heard stories!

I would be interested in some reviews of some architectural shingles. Plus some cost estimates of tear off and replace cost per square.
The last roof job I subbed out I pd 238/sq for a 18sq 2 layer tear off and reshingle with architectural shingles.

I bet that the previous roofers did not put flashing were the roof meets the siding .
I was wondering about the flashing on the wall too. I am always amazed that some installs don't leak even though they weren't flashed correctly.
Merry Christmas from Canada! Retirement in 2 years.... Congratulations. Have you planned out what you will want to do when you retire?
Yes, i'm going to keep working. Just not have to.
Thanks for great explanations. How do you decide what shingles need to be replaced?
On that particular repair, the wind damage and the shingle patch below that was the wrong color.

Men can you come to Houston I need a roof repair I'll pay you good
If you did a roof over and I’m not saying you would but would you put felt paper down over the old shingles before putting the newer layer of shingles on?
Or would you just put the shingles on directly over the old shingles?
Or gett a PITCH HOPPER!! Sold at metro roofing supplies!
Im having issues with ice do the cougar paws help at all with icey or wetness?
No, the cougar paws will not help with that. They will also be eaten up faster when they’re wet.
I roofed for 40 years I'm retired now my body is worn out!!
I know what you mean, I’m feeling it myself, 24 years now.
Three tabs are a dying art all the 20 year old kids I work with don’t even know how to cut three tab books im 43
Easy insurance claim but Brian doesn’t like to make money. He just likes making UA-cam videos lol
