Coming from someone who doesn’t watch one piece id say this is probably what set off one piece from other anime’s it’s not afraid too go pass the limit of there character designs and I personally decided too take that factor with my art just don’t be afraid too put your ideas on paper
Good breakdown but I do think there are some consistencies with Odas style that you maybe noticed subconsciously but didn't mention. For example, all male characters have dot eyes with no highlights, all female characters have fully rendered pupils, the male eyes are usually smaller and are kinda similar to how Bruce Timm draws his eyes. Oda also draws very large/tall/wide mouths when the characters are yelling, crying etc. He really does break rules lol
while i see what you're talking about, and i almost put those in the video, i looked closer and all those consistencies you mentioned, oda doesn't always do it. he does it for characters you notice but alot of the time he will and has broken those "consistencies" for the sake of fitting the characters personality
@@ddmarkk ah okay I see what you mean, Yeah I agree I think Oda sometimes breaks not just traditional rules of design but sometimes even his own 🤣 but hey that makes he work that much more unique, keep up the good work 👍🏾
@@ddmarkkfunny thing is all this is just the one piece art style oda can draw realism very well but chooses not to because it takes too long and didn't fit the vibe of the story very well. but its always evident that he knows anatomy to the t to bend it so cassually
One thing to remember with oda is that characters are drawn with paportions that are literal to how an old myth would describe things. For example if a character was exaggerated in an old story as “towered as high as an elephant” oda would draw them the size of an elephant. The magic of the art style is that it’s alliteration, metaphor, and simile taking to the most literal conclusion. Like if you took absurd Pokédex entries as literal fact. Blackbeard’s height for example grows as he’s presented as more and more of a terrifying threat. His physical body is literally proportional to his presence in the story. And this goes for facial features. Descriptors like a long nose, round ears, pointed chin, sharp eyebrows” are hyper exaggerated, compared to how you’d picture them in a book. When you read a story and a character is exaggerating my described your instinct is to make it make sense, to ground it more in reality. Oda throws that out and draws them as if those descriptions were as literal as possible. A pointed chin becomes a massively long point that would make a crescent moon jealous. Cheap eyes make a massive presence on the face with how angular they are. Big ears practically turn a character into an elephant. Any physical feature you could describe with exaggerated metaphors in a book, is literal in this world In fact some powers (not devil fruit, but other ones) are also literal takes on how skilled fighters would be exaggeratingly described. “It was as if he could walk on air” “his eyes pierced through the battle lines and bore into his foes with a fierceness that made grow men weep”. “muscles so dense spears would break on impact”
I love this. I just started reading the manga and I love this exaggeration art style and now that you said this it makes total sense how some of these wacky characters got there look.
Note : And oda doesn't use the hatching just for shading like many mangakas do , he use it also for showing the materials . See any of materials iron, wood, water , clothes , even the skin sometimes you can get the diffrence of them easly .
its the same thing. you can shade differently with hatching on different materials to emphasize the textures. its still shading: many mangakas do this.
I love inconsistent styles. The other day I sketched the main cast of the manga I'm planning and it looked like people from 3 different comics hanging out.
ooooh pretty cool. keep up the work man. would be cool to see murata's work being drawn in the next episode. cause he is godly when it comes to making a simplistic art style. to something complicated and intimidating to draw that hardly not a lot of fanarts manage to be so close to murata's work. great example is when he made fubuki and tatsumaki very thick on they're own respective assets when originally they look like a female mob psycho in the original web comics.
Hey this was helpful! Im trying to draw a picture of me with the crew right now because I wish they were real so I could actually join the crew lol I got most of the crew done but I can't seem to get the sketch of me to look like it fits with them. I've been stuck on it for a while, but this helped me a lot. I think I finally got it!!! I think you could definitely describe me based off the drawing! I never thought of it that way but you are SO right. The characters definitely do look how they act. Thanks so much for the help!!!
1:30 no DD mark you motivated me to draw like YUSUKE MURATA 🐐🗣️💯🔥 and I'm not stopping there 🤑🤑🤑 you can't stop me you're the goat but I'm have a gole 😭🙏
found this crazy because when i started art I drew in a cartoony style and my friend said "oh that looks like one piece" and I was confused but now I look at this and I see that me and oda are pretty similar .... also odas women proportions are great
You are a life saverrrr! Thank you so much for this video. It gave me a better understanding on how to draw in this art style, for I have been commissioned to draw my uncle in the style for his tattoo. Very much appreciated 😎👍👍👍
DD this video helped a lot because I had the same question to it because I’ve been making a manga inspired by one piece and I hope one day I can release it
What is the program/app you use to draw? Also is it possible to draw well with a mouse? Im a REAL NEWBIE and I have never tried to draw manga but want to try. Can yall tell me what type of equipment it is necessary?
so i use clip studio paint as the software and i also strongly recommend you do that as well. as for drawing with a mouse, thats an absolute no no. if you want to draw digitally i recommend looking into purchasing a drawing tablet
thats a video ill save for when i have more subs cause thats a video ill go crazy on and i want the views to pay off all the effort lol. if you cant tell, i LOVE murata
ok i can say for a FACT its not cheating. BUT im very unlikely to do a video like that cause i personally dont use 3d models, i think it makes my art look stiff but thats just me personally. theres probably a bunch of good vids on it here on youtube
Pls DD I need your guidance 🥺🥺.. I need to know how you improved so we'll... Most importantly your high emotional balance with school and all.. I'm literally breaking... well until your video and whyts
haha so everything i do and everything i balance all the while making time to study and improve at art is due to 2 things: my mindset and my time management. if you want to know my mindset, watch my become an art God video and as for my time management, i make to do list first thing in the morning everyday and i don't goof off or slack off until i get everything on that list checked. but then again, i never pull all nighters cause you'll need your energy to be able to handle everything.
I find it kinda dumb that you didn't really draw your character in Oda's style, you tried to blend your character with Luffy specifically. Shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the art style in question. But whatever 😅 Also, yes. All attractive women in one piece are built very similarly.
I don't want oda's art style i just want how he draws the character builds Like look at gecko moria or kaido. I want hiw he draw the shapes of the characters thats all
Way too many angles to even come close to matching odas style. Pretty much every single stroke of the pen oda makes is a curved line, it makes everything bouncy
wow you are amazing could you do one of Yuki Tabata or Haruichi Furudate or at least one of FUJITA Kakuji art style pretty please you are great keep up the good work
"People who don't watch One Piece can tell these characters personalities to almost perfection" What my description of Zoro would probably be: he is HIM.
Oda is one of the best manga artists imo because of the way he can use his weird anatomy to draw original and unique characters.
he's amazing!

I think the no rules thing is more "create a rule for that character and be consistent about it. But each character has their own rules"
Srsly, how are you doing all this and still have time for your published manga and college. To me you are a legend.
HAHAH thank you! i literally dont even know when i start thinking about it lol

“No rules” makes even more sense after Vegapunk’s reveal 😂
I don’t quite see the likeness fully but the shading definitely sells the part of it that is there. Very well done! 👍
Thank you very much!
@@ddmarkk no problem !!
Damn man! This rubric is cool asf. Hi from Kyrgyzstan(Central Asia)
thanks! and hello back to you yo! :)
I want my artstyle to be similar to one piece, but not too similar to start a copyright lawsuit. Thanks for making this video.
I love Sanji and Zoro they are the best characters I always hope to draw them I just can’t draw them right
Every time I draw they looked weird
Any art books that can help me blend wacky western cartoons with Anime like One Piece? I thing I'm coming on to something.
DD this video helped a lot because I had the same question to it because I’ve been making a manga inspired by one piece and I hope one day I can release it
Appreciate how thorough this is. Definitely a better breakdown than most
I would describe Odas art style as kind of like a rounded art style
Yea, theres really a lack of straight lines at times, he uses straight lines to show aggression and speed
I love your videos keep doing what your doing and maybe one day you’ll have a manga and if you do I am 100 percent reading it!😊
Finally goat piece art style
