Very cool to see see Sony finally begin to embrace front facing screens- although even this implementation seems to be needlessly complicated. The full swivel displays that Canon and Panasonic use far by far the most helpful.
So refreshing to see a review that didn't just bitch about the screen placement but rather just gave simple and easy workarounds. I also think that the vast majority of the reviews out there are not giving the on board sound enough credit. It sounds very usable and in many cases the addition of the extra ambient gives you a better feel of the surroundings. I think too many of the camera reviewers out there harp on the negatives as if they expect a camera to have no flaws or drawbacks. Even at under a grand they want perfection. Great honest review.
More kudos's to mentioning the eye priority function. I've watched a dozen reviews and no one else mentioned this which is HUGE for me. My A7R3 and A7R2 before it often grabbed the trailing eye.
Outstanding review, this is more thorough than any of the other photography channels especially the fact that you took it outside in the real world I can only imagine how long it took to shoot and edit. I've got a renewed respect for you and your work ethic
@Phil Jones65 ya not worth upgrading from a6300 to a6400, but for people looking to buy such a camera, they would now most likely choose a6400 over a6300
Great to see the flip screen so you can see yourself. Finally a model in this series has it so you can vlog easier. However this is not a vlogging camera for you vloggers out there. As a Sony a6000 user for 2 years now I doubt I would replace it with a model in the same series like the a6400. I love the quality of the image, but for anyone reading this... if you plan on vlogging outside like on the street, parks, wherever.... dust is gonna cause you so many headaches. It's an absolute nightmare, this series doesn't have a proper seal like the more expensive Sony cameras. I had dust on my sensor in only my second day using it and I hadn't even changed the lens or took off the kit lens that it came with. It's been a constant battle since and you are constantly having to check that there is no dust near where the lens is attached to the camera. I hope Sony can sort out the dust on sensor issue in this series. Otherwise, even with this new flipscreen, it's not really a great option as vlogging camera for lots of outside use.

If it's for vlogging get this, for photography and general video the 6300 will do just as well for alot cheaper. Then you can spend the extra money you would've used to get a Gimbal or something because neither have IBIS
Nobody complained that the 80D didn't have ibis but that was the most hyped interchangeable lens camera at the time. People really don't get what this camera is about. First of all it's $300 cheaper than the a6500 so of course it doesn't have IBIS. This is for the beginner vlogger who can't afford the I'm guessing upcoming a7000. You can get the a6400 which is an upgraded a6300 with a flip up screen and some other stuff and then move up later to the a7000 which may have the flip out screen, IBIS, dual card slots, 4k 60p etc for like say $1,500. Am I missing something... it shows the mic jack option or electronic mic shoe jack. No IBIS but compare the a6300 and a6500 they look comparable (see comparison UA-cam videos) the only issue is you cannot buy non stabilized lenses but most of them are unless you buy the adapter mount for other lens mounts. Both cameras are not the best for walking and filming anyway (see UA-cam comparison) so most people will try an limit movement therefore stabilization becomes a minor issue. To do cinematography typically you use a tripod and slide or keep the camera really close to your body anyway or hey maybe a gimbal with that $400 savings and get way better shots. Wait for the 66 or 6700 perhaps soon. Just buy a GoPro for best stability, more record options (FPS) and save a lot of $ 🤙🏼 lol I’d like to see the 6500 with the a9 processor that this new one has and focus tracking, that would be awesome but at this price point not $400+ more.

They probably licensed the patented technology for certain models, mostly camcorders. The A6400 uses the same body as its siblings. I imagine they would change the body in order to make use of the articulated screen. I doubt they wanted to do that at this point.
And say 1018 for example has OSS. and (sorry) this is the entry level will become the new a6000 in time we will see a higher end model too for all those 'rich' vloggers :)

I managed to find a sharp enough frame that showed the text on the front and its a Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS E-mount Lens SEL1018
Really great review! Thanks for not getting stuck on one smaller thing you may not have loved and just calling the whole thing junk like most other reviewers. Seems like most people like to just hate everything being unable to maybe make a compromise on anything.
Plz do more cooking videos!!! Plz!! I miss them!!!!!!!!!
The workaround is flash bracket so you can mount your microphone beside the camera
Yikes Sony... Good luck if you want to also have an external mic, lol. I have an a6300 and I find that I can survive vloging without a flip screen.
put it on the side where normally you magical flippy screen would how hard is that ?
Wow what a BEAUTIFUL camera! Wish I could afford this! However, I just got the a6000 and I am super psyched about that. Can't wait to dive deep into content creation and photography!!
nice comercial ad ... beautifully read advertising texts
Loved the video, really impressed by the new 6400 and toying with idea of jumping from Nikon DSLR to mirrorless and Sony systems a big contender. Thanks for sharing, I have just subscribed and looking forward to more videos with your fresh, upbeat and chilled style.
NO Image Stabilization 😡
Then use lens with OSS, no issue
As a male i always watch ijustine she is so transparent and i love her videos
Great new camera from sony :)
This was one of the most helpful reviews I’ve watched today. Thanks a lot!
Why don’t they make the vari angle lcd screen????
It's patented by Panasonic.
CODER QN Canon uses it. Sony needs to have that kind of screen. I am an a6500 user and getting tired of the screen i have.
Sony A99II has it
Leon Wei nah imma wait for a6500 successor
They probably licensed the patented technology for certain models, mostly camcorders. The A6400 uses the same body as its siblings. I imagine they would change the body in order to make use of the articulated screen. I doubt they wanted to do that at this point.
Finally! Also wow the onboard audio is still really good!
First crush on Justine like here
Finally it has a flip-up screen! The lenses I recommend are the one that you use
Why do so many people cry about IBIS...wide angel vlogging doesn’t require this. This is a perfect vlogging camera.
And say 1018 for example has OSS. and (sorry) this is the entry level will become the new a6000 in time we will see a higher end model too for all those 'rich' vloggers :)
Daniel Ockeloen 👍🏽
Techies always need to find something to complain about. It’s like Smash Bros and Waluigi. Both groups need a spanking.
@@vgman94 haha :D
You could simply get a smaller mirrorless gimbal instead of a mini tripod/gorillapod and you'll get SOOOOO much more for your money...
Awesome video! Can’t wait to get a new camera this year, and this one is looking really good! Cheers from Hong Kong!
sony > canon, nikon
Wow! The onboard mic sounds better for me! Has a good low and midrange unlike the shotgun mic that has a very thin sound but the sound is isolated.
I still think Canon g7x is better for vlogging
I was considering the Canon M50 but I hesitated because I’m already invested with the emount system. This is the answer
I can't work out whether it's the quality of the 4K camera or the fact you're so goddamn hot!!!
That setup looks great if you want to look like a robot while filming yourself. 😆
Sony infomercial
Agree.
WOW YOU AND JENNA POST A NEW VIDEO ABOUT YOUR NEW CAMERA AT THE SAME TIME! WHAT A COINCIDENCE!

Great review. Just using a6000 and will, definitely upgrade. Thanks for the different insides to the rigs and microphones. Love this.
Great alternative with the microphone rig. This camera rocks! Real-time eye AF and animal eye AF in a small form factor is huge.
I dare you to go filming in a popular area for a day with that HUGE setup
That was so thorough. Great one Justine!
The very first review of this camera on UA-cam. You're one of the best reviewers around. What's the price in the US?
