Instruo - Arbhar Overview

- arbhar heralds a new generation of granular processing in eurorack. Sampled audio can be chopped into tiny grains, scattered, shaped, re-pitched, reversed and layered for an endless range of audio manipulation from seamless frozen tones to mutated acousmatic madness.
Featuring a condenser microphone set into the front panel, built in audio analysis for automatic sampling and internal modulation over various parameters; this is truly a granulator like no other.
gah... i have so much to do but.. can't.. stop... watching... Great job on the demo Jason!

Every 10 minute section of this video led to hours of patching rabbit hole madness. This video took me days to work through!
Thanks for taking the time/effort to do these very in depth tutorials. So many other euro manufacturers either don't bother at all, or just do the barest overview. Instruo does it right.
Happy new year everyone! :)
Thanks!
Likewise!
Happy new year Jason!
Happy New Year ! Just ordered one (from your friends at Signal Sounds) and enjoyed your tutorial !
pyrolator Ha! I‘m about to order from Signal, too. Unless you got their last one.. 😃
I shouldn't have watched this, because instead of merely just wanting this module, I am obsessively checking to see if anyone has it in stock yet right now. Looks/sounds like a truly amazing instrument.
I received mine today! Let’s if I can figure it out enough to use it at tomorrow’s performance. It’s gonna be a long night..
17:50 Holy shit - just got one this morning - tried this pitch method - it literally took my breath away. These guys are nailing it
I'm loving it so far and this demo is perfect!!! Thank
You for making such cool gear!!!!
Delightful creative madness, Jason. Just brilliant!
Thank you so much for this! I've been loving my Arbhar the past week, this showed me quite a few things I didn't know :)
Man, that reverb mode with the snaps and the wine glass 🤤
I'm absolutely in love with my Arbhar 🖤
Just lovely stuff. I love the visual aspect of the module, very useful for understanding "where you are" within and among buffers and when saving and reloading captured audio.
This module is so incredibly well-designed.. perfect blend of art and science. Congratulations Jason!
P.s. as a philosophy & classics nerd, I absolutely love the use of Greek characters ;)
I'd love an Instruo system to go along with my Make Noise shared system.
I'd also love a small loan of a million dollarss
Very nice Module. Ordered mine yesterday. Can't wait to play around with the Granular Madness. I wish all Manufacturers would make such Videos of their Modules.
Happy New Year Jason et al at Instruo - thanks for posting this so soon at what must be a busy time of year - superb work - been introducing myself to the Piano+ Thesis and live performances of Sebastian Lexer whilst waiting for delivery of the arbhar tomorrow just to soak myself in the methodology behind the module. The polyphony and microtonal stretching possibilities of this design has already got me convinced as to the potential of this as a sound design tool as well as a playable musical (in the broadest sense) new electronic instrument. HUGE. Salut \m/
FractalSoup thank you so much!
Sebastian’s work is incredible! The granular engine he developed is mind blowing. It’s been so much fun to collaborate on and develop a physical interface for.
I think we’ve come up with something really special.
Very excited to hear what people create with it! There are bound to be so many patches that we haven’t even thought to try :D
I got mine today, thanks guys for making this awesome modules!! Keep it going
Thanks for this big review, it's a wonderful helping video and a lot of work 🙏
Thank you for watching! ☺️
I have more videos in the works too 😁
Oh man, great demo! Several things in there that would make Eno and Fripp pay attention :-) Fantastic possibilities, great sounds.
unbelievable module. Love it!
Really inspired design and effective demo. I'm sold.
Finally, I received mine on yesterday... amazing module!!!! Very inspiring ❤️
This is soooo nice!!
got mine now, plugged it in and watching this vid. super good
Looks a lot more complete the last time I saw it... Happy new year Jason!
I didn't think i needed another granular processor, but this is the one to rule them all! So musical, I love it.
got one finally - its pretty damn amazing. respect JL
I paused this video halfway in so I could go buy one of these
beautiful work! Chapeau!
Managed to catch this in stock! Just received it today and looking forward to spending some time with it this weekend.
"I'm just going to watch a little Arbhar video before bed" I said to myself. ....... 2hrs later: Woah.
A proper demo, well done !!
Incredible! I want one, top stuff!
that is beautiful!
Just got my hands on one, love it so far and I haven't even had it for a full day yet
Looking forward to adding a few Instruo modules to my future setup as space and budget allow.
The spontaneous electroacoustic possibilities are really compelling. This is the type of stuff I usually do via tape delays and inputs through electroacoustic guitar (including making sounds and yelling straight into the guitar), or in a more onerous manner, good mic straight into an audio interface/not during euro time, but it opens up a lot of possibilities to have a less clean but much more modifiable signal at a moment's notice.
This module would be PERFECT with a card slot on the front!
The pitch control is brilliant.
Dat Breath of the Wild module tho...
Gorgeous instrument
Beast of a module!
Thanks for filling the gap that Mutable left by not producing a Clouds 2. Thanks for the great video! Loving mine, and CS-L is next on the list.
Beads…
I just picked one of these up and I can't remember the last time I felt this excited about a module. Also surprisingly, my first Instruo module, since you folks are fellow Glaswegians and distributed by Signal Sounds! I'll need to clear some more rack space for the rest of the range...
Amazing!!
I've seen your content before through the algorithm but am now properly subscribed :)
You'll need to come visit us here in the Southside. We should definitely know each other IRL
@@instruo Oh nice one! I didn't realise you were Southside as well. What's the best way to get in touch and I'll drop you an email? :)
@@StephenMcLeod Southside Best side!!!

@@instruo Banging. I stupidly sent an email to your contact form because I am illiterate. I'll re-send to the proper address so you'll end up with two. Ahem.
After finishing this video I feel like I've ascended to a new state of being. And I think I have at least a small amount of understanding this module now 😀
So cool! Any chance in a future FW update to extend the 'Save Buffer' function?
Being able to copy paste one buffer to another would be super useful.
Beautiful design for beautiful sound
Did you email instruo about this?
I wish I could buy it somewhere, checking all stores every day, but no luck. Almost got one from Australia, but someone was ahead of me.
Excellent. Would love to see a similar rundown on the Lúbadh
It may be a long video, but it’s an excellent video.
Outstanding work! Love it!
Thanks Jason; that was a long but fruitful evening spent watching a video and planning my next few Iinstruo purchases. Shame that Robert Fripp doesn't come included with this module but I enjoyed the alternative Limatronics demonstration towards the end!
One question re other modules ... can you help by identifying the 4hp unit between the cèis and the first of the two øchds in the lower row? I don't recognise it from any of the usual sources and it seems to be reasonably developed for a prototype.
Very nice video. While watching this I started to make a list of features I wish it had-- but by the end of the video I had removed most of them from the list because it just hadn't gotten to discussion of those features yet. Though there were two on my list left at the end-- one is a shortcut to saving and loading all buffers at once on the USB. I gather though that you're only going to have one A buffer on the USB-- if you save the A buffer twice does the second overwrite the first? If not, how would you specify which of the two to load later? The second feature I was wondering about, is altering the trigger out to be an end-of-grain trigger instead of a start-of-grain trigger. In any case, very nice.
The layering demo was reminiscent of Eno's experiments with Fripp. Looking forward to the arrival of an Arbhar for my rack. Thanks!
The Arbhar is an amazing instrument indeed. I'm really looking forward to receiving mine and beginning my sonic journey with it! I'm also curious about the Instruo switch module you are using in this video, will it be available for purchase?
I am using the arbhar as a wavetable synth now. I have some problems getting the attack right. my adsr controls the intensity input on the arbhar with knob set to 0 in wavetable mode but it lacks some attack so i tried to trigger a grain per attack aswell seems to work now. Is this how its intended to be controlled by adsr?
Also, is there a way to use the reverb as a send so the dri comes out more? I only get it to shimmer with dry thru but not to reverb.
I NEED to run my violin through this!
Thanks for the video Jason! Is the USB key saving and loading currently available, or is it coming in a future firmware update? Also, is that switch module going to be available soon?
WOW! Great video! Can you please share with which module are you using to control the Reverb?
Pre-ordered one of these and a lubadh from Perfect Circuit a while ago, can't wait to get them into my rack! Any idea when these might start shipping out to the states?
Got this a few weeks ago .. guys how do I access samples I’ve transferred from a Pc to the USB in the back of the module ? How do I trigger the samples from the panel ?
Thanks
Hey Saren Aviation, have you been successful meanwhile with the samples from the usb??
Cool....just waiting on Detroit Modular to fill my preorder.
didn't understand the point of this module until I saw the pitch sequencing demo at 17:00ish, then realised how useful layering long portions of a single buffer with different pitches would be
Is there a video where you fully explain the Import/Export functions as it is a bit confusing to me. I bought the Arbhar specifically as i thought the import/export function would be good for live ( having the ability to change the sounds in each buffer). Its a little confusing for me atm!?
I’m a tad confused, does the reverb and additional modes work without owning the expander? I’m assuming the answer is yes and the expander just helps you have cv control over that ….
The module ships with the expander :)
I do the knurlies thing with an old original 'his masters voice' contact microphone through Ears into Clouds 😅...
My Arbhar should arrive next week 🤞🏼
Setting mod to delay, does that also impact the number of grains and recording quality?
Jason, is there a way to clear all buffers at once?
What brand are those patch cables with the fiber look? Look awesome and unique compared to regular boring patch cables
They’re all Instruo :)
www.signalsounds.com/instruo-eurorack-patch-cable-60cm-5-pack
Hey Jason, Billy here! As soon as I captured my first layers I noticed there is some cross fading going on when switching between buffers (which sounds great!). Just out of curiosity what is the cross fade time and curve you used?
The crossfade is dependent on the texture. As each grain holds all parameters until it finished playing the grain, the cross fade is one (or several) grain playing the audio from one layer while any new grains will grab the audio from another. The length of the cross fade depends on the grain length setting.
@@sebastianlexer6613 thank you for the clarification!
Great Tutorial, thanks for this! I got my Arbhar today, but i.m confused with one thing. After a few seconds, the capture button automatically starts to light orange and the white point starts to run in the stream, as in recording mode. if i hit the buttons to stop the recording, nothing happens. can anybody help me?! would be great. thanks a lot!
Maybe because the capture gate input is set to latching?!
lots of popping around 29:00 when you were doing the over dub/saving loading, any way around this?
Hard cuts in audio from overdubbing silence will be entirely content specific in terms of zero crossings.
Also keep on mind that this video was shot at the very beginning of the arbhar’s existence.
The firmware, features and functionality have continued to grow a LOT since the early days :)
It’s only got better and smoother and more versatile over time.
There is a documented change log on the website support page that you might want to check out.
@@instruo awesome. definitely on the short list :)
hey santa, I want this one!
Great video. Just wonder how you get the Data to show something, the white thing, as a dot, short snippet, or a 3D knot and or circle?
Is it a lissajous pattern (ie apply say left signal (instead of time) to X axis and right signal to Y for example)?
@@sjgreaves Yes thank you. Just read about it at Mordax in text for their latest update : )
What can be done with the 1v/oct input? It doesn’t mention it in the manual. Apologies if you mention it in the video, I haven’t had a chance to watch the whole thing
no worries, i just found it! very cool, btw
What is that eyeball module on the bottom right?
What's that crazy Zelda eye looking module
@Divinital must have missed that part. Thanks
I have the Morphagene and Clouds and let me just say - this is not an overlap whatsoever. You can truly get an advanced degree in Strangeology messing with this thing.
Arbhar arrived! Very nice! And I didn't know it was a DIY too, my expansion is up-side-down, MOD=LAYER and vice versa 🤣
oops!!
Sorry about that!
We must not have caught them all.
There is a quick trick that saves you having to remove all the nuts.
The plastic shrouding on the header can be pulled off gently and reversed to allow the ribbon to connect the correct way round.
I designed it with rotational symmetry so the connections will be corrected with that rotation.
Any help please don't hesitate to hit up the support team at info@instruomodular.com
@@instruo Ha, no worries! I did it 'the hard way', by taking off the nuts. Smart design though, also to have the panel for the lubadh ;)
Thanks! nice vid!
I have tricky power related question: Arbhar can power up CV expander module, can I power up ochd same way?
Thanks!
I'm not sure I understand your question..
The CV expander for Arbhar and Lubadh are passive signal expansions, they don't require any power and specifically use 12pin IDC connectors different from any eurorack power connection.
Hope this helps!
@@instruo yes it is! thank you a lot for quick answer!
Hi Jason, starting at 13:33 your sound is completely 180º out of phase. Listening in mono produces silence. JFYI. Happy New Year!
Robert Charles Mann aha! Nice catch, I knew I’d miss a spot somewhere! Long videos take a while to edit... It’s clearly on the scope as well. Derp!
There are some phase quirks in certain circumstances, such as mixing the two signals taken separately down to mono.
I use normalised analogue summing to allow for single output combination of all grains when patching from only the top output.
The majority of practical patching combinations are optimised for most circumstances. A single signal inverter is all that’s needed for the rare instances of signal loss.
These of course only come into play when using it in mono contexts, in which case patching from only the top output will solve the issue!
Phase is phun!!
@@instruo I can't wait to get my hands on this! I started scrubbing audio like this years ago with the iXiQuarks app if you remember that one. In any case, bravo on another absolutely wicked cool win-win.
Are you guys selling the side unit w the arbhar? coz when I look at diff dealers, they dont mention the side panel.
Da Xu are you referring to the 2HP expander?
It is included in the box :)
@@instruo awesome!
What is that ZELDA module on the bottom right?!
I built my random voltage generator out of a spirit orb!
Where can we get those blanks? 🤩
Hi instruo, i have a question cause i dont get the fonction of the Omega layer...
At first i thought Omega allowed to play all buffer at same time... Example you play 1 tone in alpha then another semitones on beta etc and finally i hope we have a drone chords at the end listening Omega right ?!
But now using my Arhbar and looking at your vidéos it looks like Oméga just allows you to switch between buffer ??? So what the difference between the layer button and the scan button ( while we are in Omega ) 😳.
Sorry if its a stupid question but i really dont understand how omega works now...
Hi Manu,
The Layer controls are details on page 10 of the manual.
When in omega mode the layers are linked consecutively, The Scan parameter then sweeps through the total length of all buffers linked one after the other. As opposed to the full pot resolution over the individual buffer lengths.
It's simply a question of use case and context as to which control method is going to be optimum in your patch.
You describe playing buffers "at the same time".
I need clarification. Do you mean accessing all buffers at the same time or layered playback from each buffer?
Buffers can be accessed for playback via the Layer/Scan control pair, or when in omega the scan can access all.
In terms of playing at the same time, grains play polyphonically. If a grain is triggered from alpha and then the layer is changed to beta, the alpha grain will complete based on its specifications (length, window, direction, pitch).
I hope this answers your question
@@instruoim not sure i understand sorry even with the manual and your explanation...
I think im simply misunderstanding the real Omega utility...
I thought that when you place cursor on Omega , all the buffers ( all sound recorded) are played and audible at same time. For example if you play one tone in Alpha, one other semitone up on beta, one other semitone up on gamma , are we going to hear a chord ( mix of alpha+beta+gamma) in Omega ?
@@manublond118 That polyphonic playback of grains happens anyway.
That's the nature of the Arbhar's granular engine.
omega allows sweeping of the playhead through all buffers from a single control (scan).
This is fantastic. Using the guitar for an example of layering sounded wonderful. Could you describe what is required to have a guitar send? (you mentioned you did some tinkering to achieve this)
Thanks Simon!
I'm using a foot controlled manual gate in the video.
I simply modified an off the shelf sustain pedal which originally had a 1/4" TS connector on the end.
When the pedal is depressed the tip and sleeve short.
I cut the cable and added two 3.5mm jacks. Passing a +DC signal through the foot switch gives me a manual gate.
There are various foot pedal interface pedals on the market which might give an easier solution.
I'm also working on something along those lines that might enhance capabilities ;)
@@instruo Fantastic. Thanks so much for the detailed response. I'll have to try once I get my hands on the Arbhar (I'm totally sold).
Also, is there any risk of damage if I send a guitar signal straight into the module?
@@wilhelm_yells It is designed for modular level signals/impedances.
You will need an instrument interface which converts your guitar to a modular level signal.
@@instruo Ah yes, of course. Again, thanks so much!
Dammit. I need one of these to go along with my Phonogene, Clouds and Morphagene. Having 2.9 minutes of recording time on the MG is great, but difficult to keep track of. Seems like a better final destination in a chain.Or maybe that's the Arbhar.
I'm just imagining doing a guitar loop in my Line 6 DL4, into the modular, adding a little broken echo grit with the PG, add some layers of whatever with the frustratingly unpredictable, but sometimes amazing, Clouds (my experience) and then capture that in the MG. Then on to The Arbhar. Up to six different versions of the loop from the MG. Different pitches, granulated, reverse or whatever, and then play the Arbhar. Damn. This is exciting. It might be the key to my vision. Then again, I've said that with the PG, Clouds and Morphagene. Haven't tried a Nebulae v2. Sounds very pretty, but seems limited and it's the one I've heard the most complaints about. Gotta put an order in for one of these.
Hey I saw there is a Shikha module from Zelda in the right down corner. Is this a official module or just a gimmick 😅
Ok but where do I get that Sheikah Eye module
Jordan Eckhoff-Bennett asking the correct questions!
I’ve only made 3 of them to date. My one and two gifts.
No idea of the legalities of copyright etc. So officially it doesn’t exist beyond my own personal botw completion tribute! 😬
...I mean...what else was I suppose to do after unlocking the master cycle?
Incredible!!
Also what’s the guy bottom right!?
Some sort of sample and hold. Not sure if he plans on releasing it, but he mentioned it in another video I saw
Thanks! :D
That’s my sample & hold... and also my way of celebrating completion of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild!
It’s more formal appearance is as the Tàgh module. But the original prototype/my personal one looks like ancient sheikah technology 🤓

@@holograms4188 only 3 exist in that form. My own one and two that I built as gifts for friends.

They are not in production at this time, but I have something in the works in terms of S&H and random voltage generation :)
1:32:00 Instant Frippertronics! 🤗🤗🤗
I think that alone just sold me...
One please.
Hey, can the pitch of the grains be cv controlled?
Yep! 1V/Octave input :)
I barely turn up the input and immediately get feedback. Only way for me to use the mic is to mute the output. Is there a way to avoid this? I don't know how you were able to get away with it in the video, unless you were wearing headphones?
Headphones.
Past a certain point feedback will be unavoidable.
Making sure you are behind the projection/direction of your speakers can help. Much like the back line being behind the PA in a venue.
Condenser mics are pretty sensitive. When your output is played through speakers in close proximity to the mic then you’ll quickly be fighting the laws of physics!
Thanks Jason!

How many octaves is the pitch knob?
-/+ 2 octaves.
The range is wider through 1V/octave
