      We don't like to talk about the Exocet. This is actually fairly consistent with Crossroads. The capital ships present remained afloat iirc, while smaller destroyers were sunk. You have to hole them under the waterline to sink them. The water surface itself deflects a lot of the blast, with relatively little energy being transmitted into the water.

    • @TrojanHell
      @TrojanHell 2 роки тому +4

      @@jackroutledge352 Yep. I think the best way to go to take out fleets is with a nuclear torpedo. It would create a sufficiently large and hot bubble in the water to sink entire fleets. There might be a shock effect under water as well that ruptures hulls, but I am not so sure if nuclear blasts propel shockwaves under water very well, it might be that the vaporisation of water doesnt make for a good material to conduct shockwaves. Either way, a 150m diameter bubble of steam doesnt make for very smooth sailing for anyone nearby.

    • @bees1664

      Yep anyone saying airburst is better is forgetting basic physics. Water is denser than air, so the shockwave carries a lot more energy. Undex is the real killer for ships

      Yes, a 14kt nuke would most probably not instantly sink a big ship even half a mile away, and its destructive force would decline rapidly after that. (nukemap calculates light blast damage at around 2 miles away) But the decks would be ripped clean and even with the dedication of the japanese army at that time, i guess the morale blast would hit bigger than the bomb itself. i cant imagine the operation would go on after that.

    • @NoobNoobNews
      @NoobNoobNews Рік тому +4

      in real life the moment the bombers are spotted, the fleet breaks apart and that is that. no attack vector would be considered ideal, and you would be contending against ships that can see the bombs as they are falling. This is why real life bombers with dumb bombs were never used in fleet actions. They tried a couple times, but never in real life did any get direct hits against a ship. This is probably the best you could hope for in a real life scenario, and the reason why every major naval power develops anti-ship cruise missiles that cost as much all of the bombs in this video put together.

    The nuke tests a Bikini Atoll showed that nukes against a fleet are extremely effective. The damage to each hull may not be extensive but the ships were sank as a result of the sea beneath them being vaporized or the massive waves generated from the explosion. I am not sure the mechanics for that are present in DCS. Entertaining none the less.

    Come on Cap really? Common sense tells you to have the bombers attack in the same direction the carriers are moving. Giving the the full length of each carrier to hit. Attacking the direction they did, the outcome was obvious. Only a couple bombs could hit it therefore little damage. Think of how much damage 10 or 12 bombs hitting the length of a carrier would cause. You said if the number of bombs dropped didn't do anything, you didn't know how many would. Well to answer that question, all you would need is one bomber per carrier. If the bomber is accurate, like I said, a line of 500lb bombs hitting down the length of the carrier should do a lot of damage. Maybe try the MK84. I know the B-2 can carry 16 of them and the B-1 can carry a bigger bomb load. Pretty sure 5 or 6 Mk84 hitting a carrier would cause some serious damage. I am related to Einstein but I don't think I needed to be to understand that.
    Can't say how disappointing the nuke was. Could just be me but for some reason I thought the explosion would have been much bigger. Like much, much, much bigger. DCS does not do this or something. If they don't want to show an actual nuke explosion, why would they even have it available in the game? Anyway still enjoyed it as I usually do with your videos. Keep up the good work.

      The amount of effort to make the actual effects of a nuke in DCS wouldn't be worth the effort. They could just add a big fireball but it would either have to look really ugly unless you were really far away or it would absolutely tank the framerate of the game. It would also require tons of animations and ground scorching effects which would be even more difficult for the game to render and would still look terrible. It doesn't really even have much tactical use so why bother.

    B1s flying over the deck axis at 40k feet would destroy each carrier. They couldn’t take evasive action. The first notice of the attack would be bombs hitting the water astern and then walking their way across the deck from stern to bow. These aren’t B17s for God’s sake. They have advanced targeting computers that would drop them at precisely the right moment to hit the carrier moving in straight line. They would not miss like you seem to think would happen, hence your poor decision to attack broadside.

It was found that a nuclear blast (airburst or underwater) would cause significant structural damage to ships in the vicinity and expose their crews to dangerous amounts of radiation. Speaking as an NBC officer (yes I'm dating myself) Able/Baker aka Crossroads used a 20Kt device and ships within 900 meters were severely damaged and sunk and out to 2000m every ship was severely damaged and irradiated. Using a 15kt device would incurr the same results and within hours of the test, the carrier groups at the center of the formation ( assuming this is the target) would have shown significant numbers of radiation sickness patients. Anything on deck would have been swept off and planes below may or may not have functionality, but discounting the flash, blast, and initial radiation effects, within I doubt many of the planes would have reached their targets.....anyway..interesting to watch

With all the fuel and bombs they had on decks and below just 1 of those would set off a chain reaction. Plus they are stealth black since the radar on a b1bnis ages ahead of anything then they could launch at night over the horizon and kill ever carrier and still have a couple left for the 2 battleships left in the fleet. They would hear the noise of the missile approaching but not see them and boom. By the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air lol. For those who think the damage model is wrong on the ships or that the nuke is underpowered, I present to you Operation Crossroads en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Crossroads This was an attempt (two really) to see what damage a nuke could do to a fleet of ships, 95 to be exact. Five ships sank (yes, just 5) and a further 14 had serious damage in the first test and 9 sank in the second, a tenth sank five months later as radioactivity prevented repairs. And that is the key here, radioactivity spread far and wide affecting far more ships and personnel than the actual blast. Oh and each bomb had a yield of 23kt, 9 more than the one in this video.

    An Aerial nuclear blast above the Japanese fleet would've been more devastating, the bomb dropped on Hiroshima was over 16KT of TNT a conventional nuclear bomb would've been over a 130KT. Also The B1's and 52's was designed with a Sniper laser designator. Increasing bombing accuracy....considering those options yes they would've stopped them, but once they returned to the future. Their success would've destroyed the presence as we know it.

Or go crazy and carry a cell(s) of 750 lbs bombs exceeding 80,000 lbs! You have to light on the fuel to take off and refuel in midair. Dick Best nailed Akagi with one 1000 lb bomb. It started a fire that gutted the ship.
    The state of Japanese damage control was such that a single bomb hit would likely have led to catastrophic fires which would have doomed the ships. I argue this for a few reasons:
    -I believe that because of the relative scarcity of steel, Japanese carriers used cast iron for their fire mains. Cast iron is brittle so would probably rupture or break at a bomb hit.
    -The Japanese could not isolate segments of their fire mains, so any breach would make them useless.
    -The Japanese did not purge their hangar fuel lines prior to battle. The USN had only recently started this, but if their fuel lines got breached, that would be bad.
    -The Zeros did not have self sealing gas tanks, so any explosion would rupture those fuel tanks would be bad.
    -IIRC, the Japanese also did not generally have open hangar decks which hindered their damage control.

    To be most effective against a naval flotilla you need an air burst. In other words, you need to be able to set the altitude at which the bomb detonates. I do think that DCS is not properly modeling the A bomb. A ground burst should have done more damage IMO.

      Actually what I remember from NBC school in the Navy, a shallow sub-surface blast would do the most damage to a fleet, first by breaking the keels of the ships by lifting them out of the water (as well as eliminating any pesky submarines lurking nearby), then by spraying radioactive fallout all over any remaining ships that weren't sunk.

    With the nuke, the ships might have survived (see the US Navy's tests along those lines), but the crews wouldn't have, and the damage done to the ships would have rendered them non-functional. So the damage model is borked. Putting a few 500 pound bombs on target, particularly a carrier, would have done enough damage to make it combat ineffective at the least. You can't launch or recover planes with a big hole in your deck.

    • @micheal49
      @micheal49 2 роки тому

      Not sure. It would depend on how far apart the ships were located, how far from ground zero, and a few other factors. Since the models on the screen are most definitely not to scale, we can't really tell. However, I've got some charts from back in my old, CBN days (Army). If somebody knows how big the fleet was (diameter, perimeter, whatever), I can figure it out. But if it were a 15kt bomb, basically, anything inside approx 0.25 km would be atomized, anything inside approx 0.33 km would be severely damaged (blast), radiation would damage anything inside approx 1km, and 3rd degree burns just short of 2 km. So a bad time would be had by all. If the fleet's spread was less than 2km, it would basically be utterly destroyed/unable to function.
      So, just how big was the Japanese fleet? Anybody know its size (diameter in km)?
      -- interesting exercise --

    Actually, you want an air-burst for maximum effect with a nuke. I believe the optimal altitude is something like a couple hundred feet. Assuming the visuals were on point, it kinda looked like the nuke narrowly missed the carrier and splashed into the drink before detonating.
