    Building a Gaming focused System, and the i5 8600K seems to be a really good chip with focus on Gaming and a good price. Maybe there is no need to go for the 8700K.

      @Fun for CHEAP get a 570 it preforms 30% better than the 1050ti and they dropped in price dramatically you can get one for like 80$ if you look hard enough. If you have the $ got a 590 it is like 40% faster than the 570

    It's so weird, this is the second time this year that you produce pretty much the exact video that i need.. :P
    Yes, i've been eyeing the 8400 for a SFF build i've been working on in a NES that i converted to house PC hardware. But, i am waiting for the B series motherboards, and i have been for months now. Getting pretty sick of it tbh. But, it's not worth investing in a Z series board either way, as even if i got a K series CPU, there's simply no thermal headroom for overclocking in that build. I'm even planning on delidding the 8400 just to improve temps, as it will more than likely gain me a fair few degrees lower temps, which could be the difference between throttling or no, in this case..
    The only reason i haven't already picked up the CPU is, that rumors suggest that an 8500 will be arriving along with the B series boards. The only difference will be a couple hundred mhz clock speeds, but i'll take it if the price is similar. I'm guessing it'll slot in at the 8400's current price, and that the price will be lowered just a bit on the 8400. It's just a guess, but it's based on past experience, so as long as the boards aren't out yet, i might as well wait to see if this CPU will arrive also. :)
    What i'm REALLY afraid of, is that the B series boards will arrive, but that there won't be any mITX boards at launch. If i have to wait even longer for those, then i'll just go with Ryzen.

    Really love your videos and I must say the quality just keeps on improving! I understand why you use 1080ti for cpu benchmarking but it would be nice to throw a few gtx 1060/more "realistic" gpu benchmarks in just to showcase what kind of performance you can expect with gpu you would usually pair with cpu's in this price range, just my 2cents tho
    I know that many people who are really interested in these things will know the difference but for someone who's new to pc building this might lead them to thinking that performace differences for their midrange build will be huge while in reality its not

    • @optimumtech
      @optimumtech  6 років тому +3

      Thanks!
      The 1080 Ti is simply there to give us a high framerate @ 1080p and create a bottleneck.
      It would be the same result if you used a GTX 1060 / 1070 @ very low settings.
      Framerate i.e. the rate at which the CPU is firing draw calls is the main load here.

    • @arnokalliokorpi7048
      @arnokalliokorpi7048 6 років тому +2

      Optimum Tech Yeah I understand that, it is ofc only logical to use most powerful gpu available to isolate the cpu performance, I was just saying that its kinda shame that nobody seems to benchmark more midrange gpu's in these kind of videos, it would be nice to see what majority of users could expect as a reference. Ofc its double the amount of work to add a second gpu and this is in the end just a cpu comparison, maybe in another kind video then :D

      Yeah 1080 Ti makes perfect sense only in the land of theoretical benchmarks. Now with the savings from the i5 8400 and a budget B360M motherboard, I may be convinced to spend some more on the gpu. But not like $500-600 more on a 1080 Ti. Also, it would be interesting to see if the 8400's gaming advantage decreases any with mid-range gpu's, especially if the Ryzen's multi-thread non-gaming performance advantages can be considered a permanently fixed factor.

    Great video, super detailed and informative as always!
    I really enjoyed the way you added a darkened bar around the bar on the graph you were comparing and talking about, that makes it much easier to follow the "presentation" in a video format, great stuff!
    *One note, I personally found the 7zip graph a little too cluttered, the large numbers and close bars make it a difficult read and compare in a video, maybe an average bar for both results would be easier to observe or even a abbreviated number.
    If you insist on giving every detail possible you could just provide links to your numbers in the description. Just a proposition.
    Anyhow, with the quality and detail of your video production and the amount on information you give you are currently my n°1 tech reviewer, and i follow a lot. Noone is reviewing like a consumer the way you are and some details you mention I find very important, while most other tech channels would just gloss over it or not even mention it. I appreciate the time you put into you production and making sure you give reliable results a lot.
    Keep up the great work!

    Edit: great presentation, I5 8400 looks to be pretty future proof. I'm surprised at what a great value the i3 is though, for most things at $99 it's pretty amazing.
    B and H motherboards are right around the corner, I've been hearing this since December. I hear new Nvidia gpus are also "coming out real soon"
    Could be next week , could be early August, waiting sucks.
    Sandy/Ivy used xenons with included ram can be a great value if you can get a good price and still find a new mobo or mod the used mobo into a large case and get an adapter for the psu conversion to a new one.

    While I genuinely respect your opinion here on the value of the i5 8400 (and undoubtedly that thing rocks) I would personally chosen the 8350k over this chip. Based between 169.99 and 179.99 its very close... and while you lose two cores you can instead overclock to 5.0 ghz with a good board. Now I know you consider the price of the board here as part of the budget factor which may be the biggest reason to choose this over the i3 8350k as a dedicated gaming processor, but it also doesn't look like the 8100 and 8300 are too behind either. Seems like less and less performance is getting eeked out of ever generation.

    By the time these motherboard even come around, Ryzen+ will be here anyways. An R5 2600x with a turbo of 4.25ghz, could probably OC to 4.4 like what's reported of the 2700x (aka, so will the 2600 in some cases). So I mean, that gaming gap is going to be pretty much gone, but you get a free double threads .-. Intel really shot themselves in the foot with the platform. If they just released those damn mobos sooner, they might of stood a chance. I went 1600 for the entire reason :s
    Also, why are your Ryzen single threaded scores so low? Your 1600 at 3.9 only got 152, where as mine at 3.8 always gets me 156. You should be getting 159/160 .-.

      “Update March 27, 2018: Leaked images from CanardPC's Ryzen 7 2700X review have appeared on Reddit, highlighting a few of the key performance tests the French magazine has carried out on the new Pinnacle Ridge chip.
      In their tests it shows the Core i5 8400 still has the edge in gaming terms, even if the 2700X has managed to improve its clockspeeds and has an extra two cores. What the CanardPC also shows is that power consumption has gone way up since the Ryzen 7 1800X, in line with its general processing performance”

    King of value? Not really... The 8600k has the potential to offer much better performance for what, less than 50 extra dollars? Or the 8700 which offers much, much better multi--core performance for only 100$ more. IMHO if you have 180$ for an 8400, you should save up a tad bit more and get either an 8600k and z370 board (you may end up paying about 100$ more in total) or get the 8700 and be set for the future (100$ more for another 5-6 years with that CPU sounds crazy good value to me)

    This suffers a case of too little too late. You can buy an overclockable AMD CPU with twice as many threads, a higher base clock, a WAY better included cooler and an overclocking capable motherboard for the same price as this locked CPU with a non overclocking capable motherboard. And with Zen+ right around the corner it looks even less compelling.

    Explain this statement: "You are not gonna get any productive use out of a 8700k on those boards... "
    If the mobo doesn't burst up into flames(spoiler : it doesn't) an 8700k is gonna run the same if not better since any upcoming chipset is gonna be a budget one. I am really interested in why that is.

    • @optimumtech
      @optimumtech  6 років тому +4

      I'm referring to running an 8700K on a budget Z370 board, compared to a more premium one.
      There's a huge difference in OC potential, VRM cooling and component longevity on a premium board.
      If you are truly using the 8700K for what it's meant to do, budget Z370 boards should be avoided.

    • @vegetablesaregoodforyou7008
      @vegetablesaregoodforyou7008 6 років тому +1

      It's not going to run the same on a cheap z370 board vs a decent one. If i remember correctly, there are reports of 8700 on OEM z370 boards running 15-20% slower than youtubers' reviews because of the horrible vrm and cooling.
      So yeah, i'd suggest doing some research on the boards you're going to buy, not just go for the cheapest ones.

      Optimum Tech der8auer did a comparison test of 4 cheap z370 boards, and by and large those chosen did very well. (English version is here ua-cam.com/video/xbLeuxIzxcA/v-deo.html) Personally (FOR WHAT I NEED) I will be getting an mATX ASRock Z370M mobo which is only £100 now with either an 8400, 8500, or 8600. I believe all of the new CPUs and boards will be here in the next 10 days and whilst Ryzen 2000 looks good FOR MY USAGE I need an Intel CPU, there are certain things AMD cannot do as well (unfortunately that's the reason, otherwise it might be different).

    The i5 8400 seems to cut it's way through gaming effortlessly at present. But the real question is how well would it stack up in the next 2 to 3 years when games start getting even more CPU intensive. The best value Intel has to offer right now is the i7 8700k; provides the perfect balance of gaming and productivity. According to me an Intel chip without hyper threading is one that is handicapped

    • @MichaelMolli
      @MichaelMolli 6 років тому +10

      Vikram Bhaskar ... that‘s the same question that you can ask after release of every CPU generation. If you want future proof hardware, Computers are not for you.

    • @vikrambhaskar7976
      @vikrambhaskar7976 6 років тому +1

      M. Molli if you see the current status of semiconductor market, its battling for cores in the mainstream segment. Intel is already set to release a new 8 core i7 cpu in the coffee lake s lineup along with Z390 chipset. Ryzen may also see a major improvement next year with Zen 2. For the first time we are fortunate to see some fierce competition like this. Now given all this do you seriously wanna handicap yourself buying a locked non hyper threaded i5 chip having only 6 threads? The choice you make now will greatly benefit you in the future once the CPU market returns dormant. Hope you get what I'm saying

    • @MichaelMolli
      @MichaelMolli 6 років тому +5

      Sure I get what you mean.
      See, I'm still using the i5 3570K (Q2 2012) and I can't say the CPU doesn't fulfill its purposes. However I'm about to buy the 8600K and I'm sure this one will serve me well for the next 4 to 5 years. If I had more spare cash, I would get up-to-date hardware more often, simply because it rocks. It's a compromise, you know ... cause if you want top hardware, thinking it's more future proof, you pay a significant premium. Instead you could step down and just upgrade sooner rather than later.

    • @pachkyn
      @pachkyn 6 років тому +1

      M. Molli
      8600k is a good choice if you need excellent CPU for games. I changed my i5 3470 to i5 8600k a month ago and improvement in performance is great. For example score in Cinebench R15 on 3470 was 129/481 and on 8600k @4.8 it's 211/1210. Thanks to best singlecore performance I got huge performance boost in my favourite games that use only few cores. On 3470 I got lags at late game in EU4 and CK2, because 1 core was hitting 100% usage, and now everything runs smoothly even at late game load is around 60-70% on main thread. Also with 60fps lock in AC:Origins usage across all cores is 60-75% and only in few places on the map it goes to 85% (Library in Alexandria for example).

    • @vikrambhaskar7976
      @vikrambhaskar7976 6 років тому +1

      For 1080p 60fps gaming you can notice the difference between an i5 8600k and ryzen 5 1600 OC 3.8ghz. so why not get ryzen and have the benefit of extra threads?
