The power output of that high output V6 was pretty impressive in 1994. Its crazy that GM sold these vans until what, like 2004 or 2005? They must have made alot of profit over the years, since the basic design dates back to the 80s.
I have to confess that I have always had an "It's Complicated" relationship with the Astro/Safari. I LOVED how roomy & comfortable they were, how smoothly they rode, & how quiet they were.........& that 4.3-liter V6 is a TORQUE MONSTER, but fit & finish left A LOT to be desired. I will NEVER forget that it was an Astro which brought me to see Home Alone for the first time, however. I will NEVER forget cruising to Showcase Cinema in Woburn, MA in a blue 1986 Chevy Astro full of kids, BLASTING C&C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)".........ON THE CASSETTE PLAYER (Man, I'm old!!!!!)!!!!!!!
As crazy as it sounds I miss my 1986 Chevy Astro van CL. It was two tone red and silver with a red interior. 4.3 V6 four-speed automatic power windows and locks Rim package tinted glass seating for 8 AM FM cassette AC with the full gauge package. I added fog lights roof rack running boards and a ladder on the back door with rear mudflats. One of the most reliable vehicles I ever owned. Lost it in an accident in 1994 90% of the vehicle we're still original from 1986 everything under the hood still had all the original dealer stickers snd markings on it because I had to replace nothing. The vehicle had over 120,000 Miles on it I did Tires and Brakes oil filter changes a battery a fuel pump windshield wiper motor headlight switch and 2 EGR valves Everything else under the hood was original.
I can't believe GM still made these toasters by 2000. They were severely outclassed by their competition. The Aerostar had much better styling, the Caravan/Voyager were the benchmark, the Previa had interesting features, the Nissan Axxess had four doors. I would say the Astro was better than the Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Nissan Flintstonemobiles of the 80s.
I had to read the wiki page a second time when I saw they were produced in 2005. The same year the Ford GT came out, this would have been at the dealership across the street lol
I have one of these. They ate so much fun to drive. I love it :)
My parents had a 1994 then a 2000. They were great road trip vehicles.

This is GM’s favorite way to make money 😂
