While having a car repair done I strolled through the showroom and found lots of nice thick-papered new car brochures! They're free and the sales staff were more than happy to let me take some. Free art supplies...Yaay! Love this use for all of those pesky envelopes! :)
Best ever use for the never ending junk mail. Awesome idea! The only draw-back is now I'll have to let junk mail in the house again. I've been making Hubby dump the junk mail out into the trash before bring the real mail (better know as bills) into the house. Now I'll have to put a junk mail box on the front porch, that way he doesn't break the habit, and I get my junk mail hoard.
Very cool journal idea - I have a bunch of 6x9'ish white envelopes with windows that I picked up years ago; I may have to try this with them. Love the phone book pages, too. Hope you're feeling better!
I am soooo enjoying this idea.......Every single time I watch your channel I come away with some sort of inspiration!! I will never tire of that.......and it's my hope that YOU never run out of ideas and such an incredibly cheerful disposition. You can't buy that with all the money in the world. Thanks so much for all the hours of inspiring art adventures that you bring to your viewers........priceless!!!! ; )
Homemade papers!! Yay. Love the look. and yeah, like others have said turn the book over, but since YOU know it is really upside down then that doesn't work. :D Thanks for sharing your lovely foibles. I wish I was that brave. Love your vids Shannon, be well.
I agree, Packer Di is really cool and does great work. I also love your version of this project. =) I'm sorry you're not feeling well. I hope you will get well very soon. Yeah! I love the way the phone book pages came out! =)
I love your envelope journal. I just got into making journals. I've always liked keeping a sort of a journal. But just used bought ones. I made a homemade smash journal the other day and today I made your envelope journal. Thank you for putting the video of yours on UA-cam!
Shannon, I loved your books, and there's never any mistakes in scrapbooking or junk journals. I love how the last book turned out. You said it was a wet thick mess when you woke up, I love how the edges are rough and each of the pages looked so thick, it could still be an awesome junk journal! maybe coffee stain some of them or all. this is the first video of yours that I could get to play. the other two would play for about 2 min. and stop. So keep on making your messes, they are great!!
michele odstrcilek How odd, I hope the playback glitch is temporary. Sometimes refreshing the page helps. Thank you so very much for watching and I hope you enjoy my channel!
At the top of your browser there is usually a little arrow of some kind at the end of the box where the webpage URL is. It varies by browser but most of the time it's a circular arrow or something that says reload or refresh.
Oh gosh Shannon! Thanks so much for the shout-out! I absolutely LOVE your envelope journal! And I really love the cover and ribbon tie. I've been so busy that I haven't even had time to do a thing in the one I made. How sad is that? lol I love the idea of using all business sized envelopes, too. Great use for all of that junk mail we get!
I certainly don't mind at all, thanks for the suggestion! My problem is that when I flip it, it feels upside down to me. Not just the printing on the pages, which doesn't matter, but the way they fold and the the little envelope on the back (which would be the front) has the opening on what feels like the wrong side to me. I know, it's odd, it's just how I roll!
Tea or coffee dyeing wouldn't really work because the gesso creates a non-absorbent barrier. It would be similar to watercoloring on gesso where the color is very muted and rubs off easily. I think a tea colored ink or paint applied to the pages would look great!
Hey Shannon! I watched part of this and am going to save it as my treat for later on tonight after working on the "Apartment Organization Project". And I can't wait because I really want to learn more about how to attach envelopes and other things to a bookbinding. I really want to do this project because like you I love pop culture junk.. notice how I give it an academic name!! Well, it is!! Anyway, I need to learn more about tip ins and the various techniques and also how to sew one page to another to make it larger.. I really like that. If you have any videos at all about tips in or extending pages to make them larger by sewing them together please, let me know. This summer I will have a sewing machine to use and I plan to do Mary Ann Moss's FTB.. FINALLY!! Anyway, thanks so much for all your kindness and your videos. Something coming to you shortly.
I can't think of a video I have the shows tip ins or extensions but if I remember right it seems like Mary Ann Moss shows those in either FTB or Remains of The Day.
I'm feeling pretty good today, here's hoping it lasts! When I turn the book over all the pages look backwards to me even though they can really go either way. It's like making a collage piece that no one but you can tell which way is right side up!
Hey Shannon, Back to being one of your minions! I guess I miss ya' girlie!! I really have wanted to make a junk envelope journal for a while now and I think I am ready to do it. I am learning constraints in the junk department and getting better. I am putting this one of the list. Doing a little different, but I really like your long skinny journal and I plan to open up the envelops instead of making pockets or I will make pockets out of other junk, but I want the tall skinny book and I love that cover and it makes me want to pull out my acrylics and go hog wild on fabric. I really have to send you some photos of finished projects. I am wishing you well. Thanks as always for the inspiration and the best to you and Jayson!! xo
+Juliana Beasley I love it when my minions come back to me! Not that you ever left but I do understand getting busy with other stuff :) This is one of my favorite journals. Did you see it finished? Here's the video for that: ua-cam.com/video/9sevSYTVDdM/v-deo.html
Nice going to make one not sure what I will use it for. But just finished opening a bunch of envelopes with steam so I didn't wreck the flap part. Ugh not my thing don't have enough patiences. Live the phone book pages :)
+kelly barrowclough That would have fixed the tab problem but then all of my envelopes would have been upside down and backwards which irritated me :) It ended up working out, this is the finished journal: ua-cam.com/video/9sevSYTVDdM/v-deo.html
Thank you! Sadly, I didn't not film a tutorial for this one but I did end up using the journal so you can go here to see it completed: ua-cam.com/video/9sevSYTVDdM/v-deo.html
Miss Shannon- if you just flip your book and make what would be the back cover- make it your front cover. They look the same, but that way your bookmark size strips would be on the top :)
Ya know, I actually investigated that before I filled up the journal but it felt backwards to me since some of the other fold-outs were folding out in the wrong direction! It's like when you do a collage...you're the only one who can tell when it's upside down and it just doesn't feel right!
I know what you mean about collages and right side up. My mother in law wanted one of my collages and I HAD to hang it right. Could not stand walking into the house and seeing it wrong.
Ya know, I tried that but the whole thing just looked backwards to me. But that's okay, it's not the end of the world and it just might end up being exactly what I needed!
Washi tape the bottom of those long slots and cut the top open. These would be great for couponing or if you are doing an envelope budget for cash. Love this. Thanks for sharing.
There's your security envelopes! Were you pulling my leg about them? Why don't you turn your book over so that the long insert pulls out the top instead of the bottom? You could still tie the book on the right side. We don't have mistakes, only opportunities.
+Dolores J. Rush I don't mind using security envelopes but I don't save them to use for the patterns they have. I'm not particularly fond of the patterns. I've actually already used and completed this journal and I love how it turned out!
I got an idea.. I'll send you a ticket up to the Big Apple when Victoria goes off off to the Czech Republic to bike for two weeks. I will hold you hostage, of course, but I will feed you and cook for you for a total of two weeks. You will be centrally located in hyperterville, Brooklyn and will feel and will be treated like a DIVA. In exchange, you will give me hands on instructions on how to make everything out of junk.. I am willing to take you to see all the sites and throw in some dive bars along the way. I need your wealth and creative knowledge. I can't wait!!
+Juliana Beasley OMG! I just noticed that I have written several messages under this video. I am losing my mind. I have watched this video probably 5 or 6 times. I am really losing it. LOL!!
I totally hear ya on not getting around to using the stuff we make! The good thing about it is that it'll be there waiting for us when we're ready.
While having a car repair done I strolled through the showroom and found lots of nice thick-papered new car brochures! They're free and the sales staff were more than happy to let me take some. Free art supplies...Yaay! Love this use for all of those pesky envelopes! :)
I agree with whyrocha--best use I've seen yet for all those junkmail envelopes. This goes on my to do list. Enjoy all your videos, Shannon!

+Debbie Lee That is so very kind of you to say, Debbie, thank you!!
I absolutely love this!! And I agree, making journals because you never know when you're gonna need one!! Thanks for the inspiration!! Always, Leslie
+Scrapn Life Away Yes! You get me ;)
I've been saving my envelopes specifically for something as special as this. Thank you Miss Shannon, appreciate the idea. Have a blessed day ahead.
Thank you for watching!
Homemade papers!! Yay. Love the look. and yeah, like others have said turn the book over, but since YOU know it is really upside down then that doesn't work. :D Thanks for sharing your lovely foibles. I wish I was that brave. Love your vids Shannon, be well.
Love the envelope journal. I've been stashing envelopes around to use. Thanks for the inspiration :)
I agree, Packer Di is really cool and does great work.

How do u refresh a page?
At the top of your browser there is usually a little arrow of some kind at the end of the box where the webpage URL is. It varies by browser but most of the time it's a circular arrow or something that says reload or refresh.

LOVE your 'mistake' of a book
Thanks Kerry!
Just a thought - still a great album. Glad you are feeling better

Brilliant solution!
lol you're so funny Shannon... good tutorial--think I'll try this one :P
BRAVO!!! Its cool!
Cute. You are very talented
+Angela Bright Thanks Angela!
Very cool idea!
Thanks Tracy!
Nice! Hey, you could turn the entire book upside down and make the front the back? Anyway it's still very cool! TFS!
Such a clever & useful idea!!!, is perfect for monthly bills... I will definetely make one.. thanks!!!
That's a great idea...bills or the cash envelope system...perfect!
Oh my gosh you're brilliant!! I see a test drive in my future :)
Oh it would, great idea!

Crafty Come Lately Thanks so much!
Very neat.
Thank you!
You're welcome!

Feeling pretty good today! I bet this would work great with those envelopes, aren't you glad you held on to them? :)
Looooove it.
Kathy Buttermore Thank you!
Hey Shannon! Could you tea dye the phone book pages? They would look like parchment (IMHO). What do you think?
Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
I think it looks cute coming out the bottom 😀
THanks Sonia!
I agree, just turn it around and make the back the front- since it is symmetrical, your skinny inserts would then be at the top.
Thanks for watching!
love this idea i was thinking if you just flipped the journal over the tab bits will be the right way so they come out the top ?
+kelly barrowclough That would have fixed the tab problem but then all of my envelopes would have been upside down and backwards which irritated me :) It ended up working out, this is the finished journal: ua-cam.com/video/9sevSYTVDdM/v-deo.html
This would be so cute for coupons.
A great idea - why don't you turn the book over and make those bits come out the top. Just a thought - hope your feeling better
Yep, it'll always look upside down to me if I turn it!
I love this, I did a tutorial too! Sooo fun to make!!
Thanks for watching!
I love this... is there a tutorial?
Thank you! Sadly, I didn't not film a tutorial for this one but I did end up using the journal so you can go here to see it completed: ua-cam.com/video/9sevSYTVDdM/v-deo.html

Yes, I guess you are right- sometimes a certain way just feels right :)
I know what you mean about collages and right side up. My mother in law wanted one of my collages and I HAD to hang it right. Could not stand walking into the house and seeing it wrong.
Love
what if you just flip the journal the other way? The back can be the front since they look the same...
I've actually already used this journal and it worked out great! You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/9sevSYTVDdM/v-deo.html
Give it a whirl!!
Ya know, I tried that but the whole thing just looked backwards to me. But that's okay, it's not the end of the world and it just might end up being exactly what I needed!
how many phone book pages did you glue together? my awkward ending OK BY
Washi tape the bottom of those long slots and cut the top open. These would be great for couponing or if you are doing an envelope budget for cash. Love this. Thanks for sharing.
Leann Oxley I've actually already used it. You can see see the completed journal here: ua-cam.com/video/9sevSYTVDdM/v-deo.html
Sorry for all my messages. Just found your videos. We are very similar in style and humor.
Leann Oxley No apology necessary! I'm glad we found each other :)
So what you're saying is that if I use it while standing on my head, the pull out will be at the top? Problem solved!!!
Ha! Yep :)
I was going to suggest that very thing vaugn :)
I just read your reply to Letha so I get it now.
Flipping would have been too easy, I had to make it difficult :)
i totally get it. That's the way I roll too
lol 'the real one'
Why couldn"t. you just flip the book
There's your security envelopes! Were you pulling my leg about them? Why don't you turn your book over so that the long insert pulls out the top instead of the bottom? You could still tie the book on the right side. We don't have mistakes, only opportunities.

LOL! That's okay, if you have to lose it I suppose there are worse ways!

Thanks!
