In his Violin Concerto, the world-famous American composer John Adams allowed melody back into his rhythmically pulsing music for the first time in years. And how! The solo violin threads one soaring melody to the next. Very few violinists are capable of performing this extremely difficult work. Fortunately, there’s Leila Josefowicz, a tireless champion of contemporary music, and above all a great violinist who never shirks from a challenge.

If I was to listen to this without knowing it was John Adams I’d have a hard time identifying it. It’s an extraordinary piece of music and I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything quite like it.
A REALLY SPECTACULAR CONCERT BY JOHN ADAMS WITHIN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC, ESPECIALLY THE SECOND AND THIRD MOVEMENTS, I DON'T KNOW IF THERE ARE REALLY MINIMALIST ELEMENTS, BECAUSE IT IS MORE A CONCERT WITH A MODERNIST CHARACTER.
WHAT A GREAT VIOLINIST IS Leila Josefowicz, REALLY IMPECCABLE AND THE Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra TOO.
THE COMBINATION BETWEEN THE VIOLIN AND THE ORCHESTRA IS UNPREDICTABLE, SO IT IS SOMETHING SIMILAR TO WHAT BÉLA BARTÓK WROTE A "CONCERT FOR ORCHESTRA"
It has a certain and mysterious groove that slips through your fingers though, that makes it so compelling and I can't stop listen to it.
I saw her do this piece in NY with Salonen from 1st Row! What a Joy it was!
This is a great performance of my favorite violin concerto. I don't think I loved the first movement the first time I heard it, but since then it's grown on me to the point where I just wish its trippy singsongs would never end. And the 2nd movement is so _resonant._ What a delightful place to rest and have some ease. And then man, the third movement is just ferocious! Really a lot of fun. Ma. Josefowicz deeply gets the music, interprets the (often strange!) phrases very nicely, and is able to do anything technically and with much attention to details. Maestro Mälkki and the orchestra are very well prepared, great interpretations all the way around.

It doesn't say so in the description, so it should be noted that this piece was written for Mrs. Josefowicz, which explains why she champions it.
Actually, his second concerto, Scheherazade.2, was written for her, not this one.
This was first performed by Jorja Fleezanis who asked him to write a concerto when she was the Associate Concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony. She premiered it with the MInnesota Orchestra in 1994: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorja_Fleezanis.
However, Josefowicz has really taken ownership of this and his other violin works, including The Dharma at Big Sur, and is most associated with it today. I saw her perform this with the LA Phil in 2012 when she was 8 months pregnant and it was amazing to see her perform it live.
I remember this and his first Chamber Symphony in '92 or '93 really marked a departure in Adams' style to a more angular, atonal, and darker style that really began with The Death of Klinghoffer.
Can't wait to see his Antony and Cleopatra premiere in September '22.
Outstanding performance. I remember reading an interview with Adams when the Kremer recording of this was released...I think it was in BBC Music magazine, can't remember for sure. They asked him about the difficulty of the piece and he said that many composers would say that they didn't intend to write something difficult...that it was only a coincidental side effect of the music they wrote. But he very deliberately wanted to make it difficult. He wanted to write a virtuoso show-piece. I think he succeeded.

The thing about violin concertos is that the violin should have something to do with what the orchestra is playing. I made it through the first few minutes, then skipped ahead about 2 minutes for just more of the same. It didn't seem like a good investment of time to listen further.
Amen to that.
it's kind of a drift at sea. so many people say it's beautiful but I think it's rather dark and depressing. if anyone is sick, this piece will surely make them more sick.
I'm TRYING to like it. This is certainly not what made me a fan and left me in awe of LJ. I guess I'm not profound enough to understand what I'm hearing. Oh well!
