During most of the 19th century, the British Empire was headed by Her Majesty Queen Victoria. As such, "God Save the Queen" became the de facto national anthem for these colonies between 1837 and 1867 In Canada, "God Save the Queen" became the Royal Anthem upon the country's confederation in 1867.
In 1901, with the death of Queen Victoria and the ascension of King Edward VII, the Royal Anthem of Canada was changed to "God Save the King" to reflect the new monarch. Throughout the reigns of Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, and George VI God save the King served as a Royal Anthem, even if technically not officially.

O Canada was first written in French as an anthem for French Canadians and was first performed in the 1880s and was first sung in the late 1880s on Saint-Jean Baptiste Day. There is a plaque on the Plains of Abraham indicating as such.

I noticed you put "viva la reine" and "viva le roi" the correct spelling is VIVE , "viva" is a spanish word,not a french one
Yeah I got a bit messed up with the French , after finishing vive la henri I forgot that Canadas royal anthem is bilingual, also my autocorrect accepts viva but doesn’t recognise vive.

The Maple Leaf song is a beautiful anthem. Canada made a huge mistake to change it to the current drab dirge, especially as it is sung by that screeching harridan in thr newer version.
Agree it is too "screechy". There is too much wobble vibrato baggage in the voice of the singer of the last version. The earlier female had a much cleaner voice without the baggage.
