I got through the book and season 1 without getting the hint. To be fair, it’s not nearly as apparent in the book without Michael and David staring into each other’s eyes every scene.
I mean, they intentionally decided to focus the tv series on crowley and aziraphale, having them involved in more scenes and adding a bunch, specifically for the purpose of coming at it from a romance angle. In the book their chemistry was more of a bit lol, they had an old bickering gay couple vibe to them more for the fun of it. There were definitely scenes in the book that are pretty easy to read as romantic though!

There are obvious lines in the book. Because you saw two male (although non gendered technically) beings, you might have misinterpreted the text another way. But... yeah they were there.

I’m on the Aroace spectrum, and even I could see that the two of them are deeply in love with each other. I have trouble telling platonic and romantic apart sometimes in real life (interactions mess with my head), but what I like about media (depends on what media and what genre) is that it’s either already known to the viewer, or it’s very literally depicted to be visible, at varying degrees and styles from sickly sweet 2010s stuff to something as wonderfully complex as Good Omens, so the viewer doesn’t have to rocket science their way through to see that there’s romantic love in the air.

Dear Friends, even as our hearts break for Crowley--and believe mine does--we must remember that his beloved, Aziraphale, loves him too, but, as a being of Love, feels he must share his love (and through it God's love as he sees it) with more than just one person. He's been trained to suspect anything that "only" makes himself and one or two others happy.
Love how Azi says guns lend weight to a moral argument. Then in the final battle says to Crowley “come up with something or-“ and raises his sword and the look of fear in Crowley’s eyes. He believed his angel was about to put moral duties before him and finish that sentence with “he’ll kill him”. ALSO Foreshadowing to S2 and the Second Coming….🤔

I love how much Crowley pays attention to Aziraphale. Literally every scene theyre in, Aziraphale just has his full, adoring attention, it's so sweet. Also the way Crowley stands next to Aziraphale when Aziraphale is talking to people is the most married thing ever istg. He's half facing away and slightly behind him, and standing so close he's practically leaning against his shoulder. He does it when they're telling people about the shopowners meeting, when he sits on the arm of Aziraphale's chair when talking to Muriel, a couple of friends do not stand that close to each other everytime. It just screams married 😂

I just love Crowley's role as the observer most of the time. Hes said in the book to not blink much bc of the snake thing which was translated beautifully into a love language lol. He just loves to see what his charming spouse gets up to. He does so many funny things!!

Honestly, while I felt I saw some romantic attraction from the Garden of Eden scene in episode 1, I love how this series made me rethink relationships in a new frame. They ARE the best of friends, AND they love each other. How exactly they love each other doesn’t really matter and doesn’t take away from their relationship in any way. I love how they’ve blurred the lines between where friendship “ends” and “love” begins - I now feel there’s a huge spectrum of overlap there. A friendship without love is no true friendship - though the love for a partner is different and usually much more intense. Good Omens made me see more love in my life.

@@KK-rx5zr omg yes. on some levels I love that the kissed because god knows we need more queer rep, but on some levels it felt like it tool away from the wonderful ambiguity that they captured so well. Crowley's "Not actually, either" line and consistent gender fluidity felt way more significant and genuine as representation, and in a lot of ways their relationship had been queer from the very beginning, because they were two nonconforming, genderless beings in love. I wish the kiss hadn't been the climax of the season, it made it feel almost romcom-y. (this is a very minor issue i have lmao i love GO so much)

Neil himself thinks that kisses have little to do with love, and has said that the kiss wasn’t to show they’re in love, as we’d known that from the beginning. I see the kiss more as a desperate, last-ditch effort to keep Aziraphale from leaving (that sure went well) than as a confession- there were a lot of feelings involved, but I don’t think they all have to be romantic…! Afterall, Neil is open to aromantic interpretations, and David has said that we can label them however we wish! Still, those are my own thoughts, and I 100% understand being unsatisfied with the kiss as a climax. Either way, I definitely agree that Aziraphale and Crowley are queer from the start! (Oh, I also love GO, and adore the casual rep with Crowley- what an absolute icon!)
the review at the start was my mom's exact opinion on the ending. i was like, what do you mean they shouldn't become lovers??? can't even have good rep, straight people always have something to complain about
Fact 1: Neil Gaiman literally told everybody long before season 2 that he has written the script as a love story. Fact 2: GO1 already has a lot of elements that are typical for a love story narrative, including more than one (!) breakup scenes, as well as typical romcom elements more specifically (like the “Sorry to break up an intimate moment” scene). Fact 3: The cinematography was also typical for a romantic story. I mean, when Crowley races to Aziraphale and “Good old-fashioned lover boy” starts playing, or when the end scene features the two main characters drinking champagne in a romantic restaurant while “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” is playing, or when the hero rescues the angel-in-distress and his books, and we get a prolonged shot of the look on said angel’s face while romantic music is playing… None of it is exactly subtle, is it? Fact 4: Michael Sheen has also said in interviews that he decided early on that Aziraphale is in love with Crowley and had based his acting choices on that premise. Fact 5: The original source material (the book) also features one of the characters being described as “gayer than a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide” and the main pair being perceived as a couple by other characters (notably by Anathema, when she felt safe in their company after Crowley called Aziraphale “angel” because she assumed they were a gay couple). Fact 6: The idea that Aziraphale and Crowley will end up sharing a cottage in South Downs was also discussed by Neil and Terry long before season 1 was even planned. Fact 7: Many interactions between the main characters can be easily perceived (and were, in fact, perceived by a major part of the audience) as demonstrating not simply affection between friends but romantic attraction, flirting, or sexual tension. Yet some of the cishet audience was genuinely surprised by the kiss. And I don’t just mean the homophobes (these people can obviously deny the possibility of queer romance even when the queer couple is legally married, so no surprise there). But I have a friend who is very supportive and who reacted positively to this turn of events but who was still surprised. And I really don’t understand how it’s even possible to miss something that is there on the screen so plainly. Seriously, how? Granted, I grew up in the 90s, in the time when you had to look for the subtext if you wanted to see any sort of representation (e.g. Xena/Gabrielle, Kirk/Spock), so my brain just automatically picks up on these sort of clues even when they are subtle. But the thing is that it was absolutely NOT subtle this time. And neither the author nor the actors ever pretended that it wasn’t a love story. So, how in the world could anybody miss it?

I like to think there was an instant attraction, but they both became aware of their feelings at different times. I see Crowley realizing he loves AZ in Rome when AZ says, "let me tempt you--" then gets all flustered. Idk why. Just feels like that moment, that stare was the realization. After that, Crowley has a "AZ in danger" radar and shows up to save him multiple times. He seems to go out of his way to interact with AZ. I also think he probably first suggested the arrangement and convinced AZ it was a good idea. I think Crowley discovered this earlier because he has more self-awareness of his thoughts, opinions, and beliefs. I think AZ realized he had fallen in WWII. Crowley caused himself physical pain by going inside a church, performed what must have been a pretty heafty demonic intervention, and put his physical body in AZ's hands (needing a "real miracle" to survive), all to save AZ. Then, even tho Crowley couldn't care less about books, he saved them because he knew AZ cared for them. The music swells and AZ is not nearly as subtle about is realization moment. I think that realization is why he eventually changed his mind about the holy water. Crowley trusted AZ, despite how crazy the plan sounded. AZ returned it by showing his trust that Crowley wouldnt hurt himself with it. I think the "You go to fast for me, Crowley," line was heartbreaking. But i think its a reflection of how Crowley knew about his feelings for a lot longer and thus actively persued contact with AZ. But AZ just realized during WWII. Of course that seems like a long time to us, but to immortal beings it probably felt like nothing.

You know what this show is like? It _is_ like watching a box of puppies. It's like watching a box of puppies, being so happy, then getting told that you'll even get to take one home if, by the end of the day, they haven't all been taken. It's getting later, and now there's only one. But you have hope, because you believe the person who promised you one will probably just close up early so that you can have it. Then in the last fifteen minutes, the puppy gets run over by a f*cking car. Then you get told, but hey, sometimes dogs reincarnate to be with their humans, and so, maybe, if you wait a few years, it'll reincarnate as another puppy, and maybe, just maybe, you'll get to take _that_ one home, but only if it finds you, and you have to wait a while, and even then, you still have to live with the trauma of _watching it get run over by a f*cking car!_

I love how much Crowley pays attention to Aziraphale. Literally every scene theyre in, Aziraphale just has his full, adoring attention, it's so sweet. Also the way Crowley stands next to Aziraphale when Aziraphale is talking to people is the most married thing ever istg. He's half facing away and slightly behind him, and standing so close he's practically leaning against his shoulder. He does it when they're telling people about the shopowners meeting, when he sits on the arm of Aziraphale's chair when talking to Muriel, a couple of friends do not stand that close to each other everytime. It just screams married 😂

Honestly, while I felt I saw some romantic attraction from the Garden of Eden scene in episode 1, I love how this series made me rethink relationships in a new frame. They ARE the best of friends, AND they love each other. How exactly they love each other doesn’t really matter and doesn’t take away from their relationship in any way. I love how they’ve blurred the lines between where friendship “ends” and “love” begins - I now feel there’s a huge spectrum of overlap there. A friendship without love is no true friendship - though the love for a partner is different and usually much more intense. Good Omens made me see more love in my life.

@@KK-rx5zr omg yes. on some levels I love that the kissed because god knows we need more queer rep, but on some levels it felt like it tool away from the wonderful ambiguity that they captured so well. Crowley's "Not actually, either" line and consistent gender fluidity felt way more significant and genuine as representation, and in a lot of ways their relationship had been queer from the very beginning, because they were two nonconforming, genderless beings in love. I wish the kiss hadn't been the climax of the season, it made it feel almost romcom-y. (this is a very minor issue i have lmao i love GO so much)

Neil himself thinks that kisses have little to do with love, and has said that the kiss wasn’t to show they’re in love, as we’d known that from the beginning. I see the kiss more as a desperate, last-ditch effort to keep Aziraphale from leaving (that sure went well) than as a confession- there were a lot of feelings involved, but I don’t think they all have to be romantic…! Afterall, Neil is open to aromantic interpretations, and David has said that we can label them however we wish!
Still, those are my own thoughts, and I 100% understand being unsatisfied with the kiss as a climax. Either way, I definitely agree that Aziraphale and Crowley are queer from the start!

Fact 1: Neil Gaiman literally told everybody long before season 2 that he has written the script as a love story.
Fact 2: GO1 already has a lot of elements that are typical for a love story narrative, including more than one (!) breakup scenes, as well as typical romcom elements more specifically (like the “Sorry to break up an intimate moment” scene).
Fact 3: The cinematography was also typical for a romantic story. I mean, when Crowley races to Aziraphale and “Good old-fashioned lover boy” starts playing, or when the end scene features the two main characters drinking champagne in a romantic restaurant while “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” is playing, or when the hero rescues the angel-in-distress and his books, and we get a prolonged shot of the look on said angel’s face while romantic music is playing… None of it is exactly subtle, is it?
Fact 4: Michael Sheen has also said in interviews that he decided early on that Aziraphale is in love with Crowley and had based his acting choices on that premise.
Fact 5: The original source material (the book) also features one of the characters being described as “gayer than a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide” and the main pair being perceived as a couple by other characters (notably by Anathema, when she felt safe in their company after Crowley called Aziraphale “angel” because she assumed they were a gay couple).
Fact 6: The idea that Aziraphale and Crowley will end up sharing a cottage in South Downs was also discussed by Neil and Terry long before season 1 was even planned.
Fact 7: Many interactions between the main characters can be easily perceived (and were, in fact, perceived by a major part of the audience) as demonstrating not simply affection between friends but romantic attraction, flirting, or sexual tension.
Yet some of the cishet audience was genuinely surprised by the kiss.
And I don’t just mean the homophobes (these people can obviously deny the possibility of queer romance even when the queer couple is legally married, so no surprise there). But I have a friend who is very supportive and who reacted positively to this turn of events but who was still surprised.
And I really don’t understand how it’s even possible to miss something that is there on the screen so plainly. Seriously, how?
Granted, I grew up in the 90s, in the time when you had to look for the subtext if you wanted to see any sort of representation (e.g. Xena/Gabrielle, Kirk/Spock), so my brain just automatically picks up on these sort of clues even when they are subtle.
But the thing is that it was absolutely NOT subtle this time. And neither the author nor the actors ever pretended that it wasn’t a love story. So, how in the world could anybody miss it?
Xena and Gabrielle... That brings back memories of a young girl who was totally not a lesbian. 🙋🏻♀😏

I like to think there was an instant attraction, but they both became aware of their feelings at different times. I see Crowley realizing he loves AZ in Rome when AZ says, "let me tempt you--" then gets all flustered. Idk why. Just feels like that moment, that stare was the realization. After that, Crowley has a "AZ in danger" radar and shows up to save him multiple times. He seems to go out of his way to interact with AZ. I also think he probably first suggested the arrangement and convinced AZ it was a good idea. I think Crowley discovered this earlier because he has more self-awareness of his thoughts, opinions, and beliefs.
I think AZ realized he had fallen in WWII. Crowley caused himself physical pain by going inside a church, performed what must have been a pretty heafty demonic intervention, and put his physical body in AZ's hands (needing a "real miracle" to survive), all to save AZ. Then, even tho Crowley couldn't care less about books, he saved them because he knew AZ cared for them. The music swells and AZ is not nearly as subtle about is realization moment. I think that realization is why he eventually changed his mind about the holy water. Crowley trusted AZ, despite how crazy the plan sounded. AZ returned it by showing his trust that Crowley wouldnt hurt himself with it.
I think the "You go to fast for me, Crowley," line was heartbreaking. But i think its a reflection of how Crowley knew about his feelings for a lot longer and thus actively persued contact with AZ. But AZ just realized during WWII. Of course that seems like a long time to us, but to immortal beings it probably felt like nothing.

You know what this show is like? It _is_ like watching a box of puppies. It's like watching a box of puppies, being so happy, then getting told that you'll even get to take one home if, by the end of the day, they haven't all been taken. It's getting later, and now there's only one. But you have hope, because you believe the person who promised you one will probably just close up early so that you can have it.
