EXACTLY I recently remembered this song existed and I thought “WHY THE HELL IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT IT!” It fits their current situation too fucking well to be missed!
The fact that Neil used Peter Gabriel's version of the Book of Love is just deliciously evil. THE MAN LITERALLY HAS GABRIEL IN HIS NAME. does that mean their fate is tied to Beelzibub and Gabriel's relationship? They need to hurry up season 3
"No matter the personal cost to him, Aziraphale will dig down and find the strength to do what he believes is right." I couldn't agree more. Our angel has a clear moral compass and some serious backbone.
I can see Crowley blasting Olivia Rodrigo's Driver's License in the Bentley, trying and failing to convince himself to throw away Aziraphale's things, mildly concerning passersby
The fandom is going crazy over the tiniest details and I'm here for it! The moment I saw "My heart will go on" I was like: Aziraphale! Aziraphale! Aziraphale! And would like to share the conclusion of one late night Titanic debate about the character Rose. We were asking if she ever truly loved Jake if she remarried whilst always going on and on about how she only loved him. I draw the conclusion that her love for him changed her as a character and she realised she can be better, she managed to find a life for her and be happy (which she wouldn't be able to do without Jack). This might be very fitting for Aziraphale. Well, Crowley doesn't die and I don't think he will find new love (God forbid that!), but the break up can be viewed as a symbolic death. One that Aziraphale will have to go through and endure, just like Rose, to find something in him. And a nice analysis, just like always!
That's a really great interpretation, not all death must be literal, and this moment will certainly be transformative. I love that parallel to titanic, which is such a good movie, just solidly good in every way, even decades later. I love the conclusion you all reached together about Rose! Jack changed her to be capable of love again, even though he was gone. That's really beautiful. AH! You all make me cry right back, lol.
The only songs I guessed right was: The Show Must Go On (Because Queen) and The Book of Love (Because of the similarity to The Book of Life). Neil... Neil is really cooking up something, I can smell it.
I’m a huge fan of the band Big Thief so the song “Sparrow” always reminded me of Good Omens. Especially the lyrics “She has the poison inside her, she talks to snakes and they guide her”. Like come on that’s too perfect.
The songs “Come With Me” and “Us” by Chxrlotte are written specifically about Good Omens and are such beautiful songs that i would absolutely recommend for a GO playlist
* cracks knuckles and pulls up my 19 hour long Ineffable Husbands playlist * I've been OBSESSED with "Battle Cries" by The Amazing Devil for them lately. It's an anxious but fervent duet between a couple breaking under the weight of serious hardships and arguing over what their next course of action should be. If Crowley is the male voice and Aziraphale is the female, it perfectly captures Crowley's optimism that they can one day leave it all behind and be together with Aziraphale's persistent and heartbreaking belief that realistically that will never be allowed to happen. Especially with these lyrics (Crowley regular, Aziraphale in parentheses): "With you, I could summon the gods and the stars (Come on love, please, don't start) Watch them dance out the plays that we wrote from the heart (Sing your notes, play your part, then we'll leave) And we'd laugh at the ghosts of our fears (We were gods), we were kids." And also to sweeten the pot, it includes probably the most perfect and oddly specific line I've ever found scouting out fandom songs: "This isn't a break-up, dear heart, it's a season finale"
Wonderfully done, Sendarya! I would add Dream a Little Dream of Me as an Aziraphale song, makes me smile just thinking about it. Separate topic: your point about the Metatron walking on Aziraphale's left, in Crowley's spot, had me reeling. 😭
Another fantastic analysis. You've made me check the book of love and WOW what a beautiful song and how fitting it is for a hopeful S3 ending. I'm afraid ineffable husband's make me get as sappy as it gets and I'd be thrilled to see Crowley wearing Aziraphale's ring (and Aziraphale wearing a snake tattoo btw 😂)
The Book of Love is devastating emotionally. It kills me! Honestly, Dial Drunk by Noah Kahan is 100% on my Aziracrow playlist. Crowley POV, because there’s nothing better than chaotic drunk sad Crowley.
Your speculation about the book of life gave me an idea. Michael and David have repeatedly said in interviews that neither Crowley or Aziraphale exists without the other. What if none of them can be erased from the book of life and thereby existence because they are such a closely knit unit? What if heaven tries to erase say Crowley and fail, and that's how they - Crowley and Aziraphale himself - realize how much he loves him despite leaving? THAT would be an epic moment of one saving the other, as well as both proof for Crowley and redemption for Aziraphale! (I might even write that scene myself now...)
If you figure it out, I'd appreciate it if you can inform the rest of us! I think about half the fans are 40+ (I'm in this group myself). But, welcome to the fandom!
On the subject of the random thought, Crowley watching aziraphale walk away with the Metatron literally happens in the song I'd rather go blind, the watching of the object of one's affection walk away with someone else. In addition, the Taylor Swift song midnight rain made me think of Crowley saying when I go off to the Stars I won't even think of you. And now he's wondering if Aziraphale has gone to heaven and isn't thinking of him.
"Never Tear Us Apart" - INXS "Undisclosed Desires" - Muse "Resistance" -Muse "Halo" - Depeche Mode "One Caress" -Depeche Mode "I Think I Love You" -The Partridge Family "Here Comes The Rain Again" -Eurythmics "Creep" -Radiohead "I Will Wait For You" -Connie Francis
Excellent analysis! Thank you. I agree the Book of Life has to come in to play. It's Chekov's gun. I also think it has to end up in Aziraphale's possession, or stashed in the book shop. The oldest and most valuable book that ever existed ending up in Aziraphale's hands, or in his collection seems fitting. These songs have made me more confident in an idea I've had circling my brain. My recent theory of how it will all tie up is that Aziraphale's memory will be erased (because that's what Heaven likes to do to troublesome angels), or at least his memories of Crowley. This could occur after Heaven's plans are thwarted, likely by Aziraphale or Crowley or both, and the memory wipe could be the Metatron's last punishment, or a last attack to stop Aziraphale from using the Book of Life, or thwarting The Second Coming. Crowley may become his caretaker (like Aziraphale was for Jim, but without the literal fly on the wall from Beelzebub to reverse it), in the South Downs cottage with the beautiful garden. Crowley has relocated to escape his own memories drowning him in sorrow on every street corner in London, and to try to have something of his own that isn't painful, and isn't revolving around Aziraphale. A garden with a place for him to live without old memories and old ties seems likely. Crowley has Aziraphale's books, either to stop Muriel from selling them, or as his own angry revenge fantasy, or his revenge fantasy as cover (from himself!) for the fact that he still wants to protect the things that Aziraphale loves. Amongst Aziraphale's collection are all his journals. Actual "books of love" documenting his millennia of love for Crowley, humanity and the world. As they sit, in the garden, Crowley reading the journals to Aziraphale, trying to get him to remember the "furniture" that used to be there, while learning just how much Aziraphale loved him back. Maybe he regains his memories and becomes himself again and loves Crowley as he always has. Maybe he doesn't, and finally relieved from all of the memories of Heavenly abuse and control, grows to love Crowley freely, without guilt or reservation. Either would be a tragic, yet ultimately triumphant ending.
Me personally, I am listening to Mozart, Requiem, to cope with the ending of season 2. Poor Aziraphale - Mozart and the other good composers are all in hell, as Crowley told him in season 2. Thank you for this video, Sendarya! Specially the explaination to Freddy Mercurys "The show must go on". I agree. There is an angel of steel under the soft and shy cover of Aziraphales presentation. He will see it through and save his love. Thank you for everything you have given this year! I love your videos, they are clever and funny and so well researched. Having said this. It is always a good decision to take time for yourself and your family. - And take your time to make your videos. You have spoiled us with the many videos you produced this year. I will be happy with a video a week and I will wait patiently, if you decide to take a longer break or release once a month. And so will others here. Take care of yourself! I wish you a very happy new year 2024!
My Go-To Songs at the moment that speak to me are "Dream a little Dream of me" by The Mamas and Papas, and "Love of my Life" from Queen. I imagine Crowley, dancing slowly all alone, drunk af with a bottle of wine in his arms, thinking of his angel. I'm unwell :(
Ah, Mama Cas, what a classic song! Love of my life feels like we'll hear it in S3, right?? There have to be at least a few Queen songs. Don't worry, we're all unwell together in this fandom 💔
@@Sendarya Yes, i guess so, too. I was starting to read the script book of S1 and there are much more Queen songs suggested than ended up in the series
*A candy-colored clown they call the sandman* *Tiptoes to my room every night* *Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper* *Go to sleep, everything is alright* -In Dreams by Roy Orbison I just wanted to mention that, as a fan of Neil Gaiman’s other masterpiece, The Sandman, these lyrics brought a delighted smile to my face. I bet the person/people tasked with curating this playlist knew exactly what they were doing when they chose to include a song with such an overt reference lol.
YES! great point, I should have mentioned that! Great observation, I'm sure this is on purpose. I'm sure Dream would want to bring comfort to Crowley, too.
The song I immediately connected to them was Kathy’s Song by Simon and Garfunkel, especially the lyrics “I gaze beyond the rain drenched streets, to England where my heart lies” and “I stand alone without beliefs, the only truth I know is you” Yes it broke my heart into even tinier pieces
Simon and Garfunkle are one of my favorite bands of all time. I have one of their songs in my personal playlist as well (I am a Rock!) but your choice here is even better. Love that one, great choice! That last line, yeah...ouch my heart.
Another beautiful Queen song is Teo Torriate (Let Us Cling Together). It starts incredibly plaintively. When I'm gone No need to wonder if I ever think of you The same moon shines The same wind blows For both of us, and time is but a paper moon Be not gone Though I'm gone It's just as though I hold the flower that touches you A new life grows The blossom knows There's no one else could warm my heart as much as you Be not gone Let us cling together as the years go by Oh my love, my love In the quiet of the night Let our candle always burn Let us never lose the lessons we have learned 手を取り合って このままでいこう 愛する人よ 静かな宵に 光を灯し 愛しき教えを抱き Hear my song Still think of me the way you've come to think of me The nights grow long But dreams live on Just close your pretty eyes, and you can be with me Dream on 手を取り合って このままでいこう 愛する人よ 静かな宵に 光を灯し 愛しき教えを抱き When I'm gone They'll say we're all fools, and we don't understand Oh, be strong Don't turn your heart We're all You're all For all For always Let us cling together as the years go by Oh my love, my love In the quiet of the night Let our candle always burn Let us never lose the lessons we have learned
"Lost on you" by LP is fitting so well for me related to Crowley, I mean the lyrics are so deep and the question mark at the end "Is that lost on you?" "Lost On You" When you get older, plainer, saner Will you remember all the danger We came from? Burning like embers, falling, tender Longing for the days of no surrender Years ago And will you know So smoke 'em if you got 'em 'Cause it's going down All I ever wanted was you I'll never get to heaven 'Cause I don't know how Let's raise a glass or two To all the things I've lost on you Oh-oh Tell me are they lost on you? Oh-oh Just that you could cut me loose Oh-oh After everything I've lost on you Is that lost on you? [...] Wish that I could see the machinations Understand the toil of expectations In your mind Hold me like you never lost your patience Tell me that you love me more than hate me All the time And you're still mine So smoke 'em if you got 'em 'Cause it's going down All I ever wanted was you Let's take a drink of heaven This can turn around Let's raise a glass or two To all the things I've lost on you Oh-oh Tell me are they lost on you? Oh-oh Just that you could cut me loose Oh-oh After everything I've lost on you Is that lost on you?
I had not heard this song before, and of the many new to me songs I've listened to, recommend in these comments, this is probably my favorite. Thank you so much for sharing this. Great music, talented artist, perfect song!
Personally, these are my must haves on any of my good omens related playlists: 1. good old fashioned lover boy 2. killer queen 3. somebody to love 4. the moon will sing - crane wives 5. tongues and teeth - crane wives 6. world we knew - Frank Sinatra 7. Unknown / Nth - Hozier
In this playlist, a MUST song is, for me, Godwin' by Billie Eilish. Simply because I believe that Crowley do not trust Aziraphale's new journey in heaven and would probably be concerned about it (while thinking that Aziraphale surely has enough discernment by now and therefore, that it was is responsibility to leave or not, that he made a choice)… Otherwise, thank you for this new video. It's always a pleasure watching them.
Love your analysis as always!!! I wanted to add a song - “When You Were Young” by the Killers. When I heard this song the other day it struck me as how Aziraphale would feel while reflecting back on what he left behind. Lots of familiar themes here- forgiveness, good/bad, discovery, being saved. “You sit there in your heart ache waiting on some beautiful boy to save you from your own ways. You play forgiveness…” “He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus but he talks like a gentleman, like you imagined when you were young.” (Crowley being good despite being a demon/not “looking” like the good guy) “can we climb this mountain, I don’t know. Higher now than ever before I know we can make it if we take it slow” (“you go to fast for me”) “the devils water it aint so sweet…” etc. And all this from the very romantic perspective he tends to have.
I love your interpretation of the songs in the playlist and how much effort you have put in this. Some thoughts of mine are the same, some are a little different, but overall, I very much agree with this video. This is my interpretation: I also think these songs resemble the Stages of Grief: I'd Rather Go Blind - Crowley (Denial): I think the song is about Aziraphale and Metatron talking about leaving Crowley and eventually how they actually do it and how it breaks Crowley’s heart. But he does not want to see it. He puts his glasses on and shuts himself in his home/car. If he can't see Aziraphale, he doesn't want to see anything, especially not losing his love. The Show Must Go On - Aziraphale (Denial): It is about him searching for answers, searching for the sense of all this and his life. It shows how Aziraphale now also doubts about what heaven wants to do and how they do it. Is he still on the "right" side or did he always help the wrong people? He doesn’t know, but he wants to know it so much. He wants to know why they exist and why they met each other in the first place. Now he goes with a fake smile because he doesn't know what to do yet. The Denial songs are about them being sad about what happened, but they don’t realize how much they miss each other yet. They want to live and find the sense of their lives without always thinking about the other. And they fail. Cry Me A River - Crowley (Anger): It is about how Crowley and how he is/was so sad about Aziraphale’s leaving and how he cried a lot because of it. He believes that Aziraphale was not as broken as him and he doesn’t understand how he could leave so easily after all their adventures and memories of each other. He knows that he wants Aziraphale, but he is so frustrated that he can’t forgive him that easily. Could’ve Been - Aziraphale (Anger): It is about how Crowley confessed his love to him, but not going to heaven with him shows that his love is not enough. He now tells himself that they can’t be because Crowley doesn’t want to. The Anger songs are about the miscommunication between them through the whole series and how both are frustrated because they think the other’s love isn’t enough. They think they are the person why cries/loves more and they don’t understand why the other person left them. In Dreams - Crowley (Bargaining): It’s about Crowley thinking what could have been if Aziraphale had run away with him, how he could have healed his sadness which he had the whole time after his fall, how they would have been happy together somewhere else, away from the toxic hell and heaven. But it is still only a dream. Just My Imagination - Aziraphale (Bargaining): It is about Aziraphale also thinking what could have been if Crowley came to heaven with him. How he hopes that it still comes true sometime. That Crowley finally can be happy again. Together. These songs resemble their thoughts/dreams about what could have been if they had communicated right. If the other person had understood. They still dream about a life together and don’t lose hope. I’m A Mess - Crowley (Depression): It’s about him only trusting Aziraphale, but still denying the fact that he needs him. He hates himself, but still, he is an optimist and still tries to not lose hope. Midnight Rain - Aziraphale (Depression): He is sad about the fact that Crowley does not want a change and how he himself has changed a lot in the past years. How they both got brighter/darker than before. It is also about Crowley’s optimism and how he loves him and how Aziraphale still chose heaven. Not for himself and his happiness, but for the greater good. He thinks about Crowley, but he knows that Crowley doesn’t think the same. The depression is about their hate towards themselves for not being good enough for the other. They hate how they love each other so much and how they still could have left the other person. My Heart Will Go On - Crowley (Acceptance): It’s about Crowley finally realizing how much he loves Aziraphale, even if he isn’t there. He wants to be with him forever and protect him the best he can. Heart and Soul - Aziraphale (Acceptance): It’s about Aziraphale also finally realizing that what he has felt all the time was love. How he was tempted with his touch and how he longs so much more, even more than many years ago with the food. The acceptance songs show their love languages. Crowley shows love trough protecting his loved ones and everything they love and Aziraphale shows love with touching the person and things they love most. They both realize how much they love each other and that both can forgive when the time comes. The Book of Love: It represents the book "Good Omens" itself and all its characters and every sentence. The songs show how their story is like an eternal dance which they have to learn, because they couldn't dance before. Both were angels who couldn't dance, couldn't love, but now they can. Crowley was/is a demon who can dance but not very good. He dances but he doesn't know the rules. The text also emphasizes how much Crowley loves how much Aziraphale loves his books (My headcanon says that Aziraphale has read many books to Crowley and Crowley didn't show that he liked it, but he did). They dance to the nightingale song which is often mentioned in the series too and I think it is "their song", the song they heard while dining at the Ritz and how it is still "their song". Crowley loves everything Aziraphale says and Aziraphale also loves everything Crowley says (especially the silly things like "wiggleong" or "the clue", even if Crowley doesn't admit it). The song also says that they have lived a long time but still have a lot to learn, especially to dance, to love. They want to give each other wedding rings/spend eternity with each other, never leaving the other. Man, this was long. Sorry and respect for everyone who has read it all 😂
Wow, what a great post, thank you!!! I love you dufferent interpretations of the songs. I admit to struggling with Could’ve Been, but your change of both character and interpretation makes a lot of sense. I especially love everything you said about the Book of Love! It really does feel like it represents them through the ages, and their ineffable dance. Beautifully put!
I also nominate "Training Montage" by the Mountain Goats, for Aziraphale specifically. I think when he gets on that elevator even after everything, he's doing so because he'll always put his duty to protect what he loves over his own happiness, ESPECIALLY Crowley. "I'm doing this for revenge I'm doing this to try and stay true I'm doing this for the ones They left to twist in the wind I'm doing this for you"
I found a song in making my own personal sad boi playlist for these two, a song called Us by Chxrlotte (lemme know if I spelled that wrong) and I read that she wrote it about the final fifteen? Like Crowley's side of it and man it is beautiful and so on point Also Say Dont Go by Taylor Swift is very Aziraphale, on the other hand.
You can even just do one once a month and we would all still gobble it up dear. Thanks for the analysis, always top notch! I didn’t know the Book of Love is such an unknown song! It was in my top 3 for them immediately after s2. Glad Neil thought the same ;-)
That's so sweet, thank you! My brain may not let me do so few, but I still toy with the idea of occasional other things. Analysis, still, but of something else here or there. Something I may experiment with later. Thank you so much for the wonderfully supportive comment! 💗
I adore your analyses so much! They are bringing me so much joy. I only discovered your channel a few days ago but have been binge watching your videos and devouring the comments and I am perpetually blown away by the insight and perspectives of this fandom! Songs that seem very Aziracrow coded/pertinent to our Ineffable Husbands to me are 'Unknown (nth)' by Hozier and 'Two Men in Love' by The Irrepressibles. The latter tells a tortured story of loving someone but there being danger in that; I think one of the most pertinent lines from it is 'see me running to you/from you/to you', which speaks to me of the push-pull dynamic between Aziraphale and Crowley and how they want one another but feel too unsafe to commit to one another as it stands. The former, well, I couldn't pull a single lyric from it because the every word of it seems written entirely for them! ❤ for me, it can be seen as being from Crowley's perspective in the first and second verses, Aziraphale's in the third and both in the fourth 💔 Here are the lyrics for the full song: You know the distance never made a difference to me I swam a lake of fire, I'd have walked across the floor of any sea Ignored the vastness between all that can be seen And all that we believe So I thought you were like an angel to me Funny how true colours shine in darkness and in secrecy If there were scarlet flags They washed out in the mind of me Where a blinding light shone on you every night And either side of my sleep Where you were held frozen like an angel to me Chorus: It ain't the being alone Sha-la-la It ain't the empty home, baby Sha-la-la You know I'm good on my own Sha-la-la Sha-la-la, baby, you know it's more the being unknown So much of the living, love, is the being unknown You called me angel for the first time, my heart leapt from me You smile now, I can see its pieces still stuck in your teeth And what's left of it, I listen to it tick Every tedious beat going unknown as any angel to me Do you know, I could break beneath the weight Of the goodness, love, I still carry for you? That I'd walk so far just to take The injury of finally knowing you Chorus: It ain't the being alone Sha-la-la It ain't the empty home, baby Sha-la-la You know I'm good on my own Sha-la-la Sha-la-la, baby You know it's more the being unknown And there are some people, love, who are better unknown
So glad you mentioned "Shall We Dance?" as it's one of my very favorite movies and one I was comparing in my mind to season 2 since I saw the season the first time. I know these two are meant to be together and ...well, that's all there is to it, lol. Thank you for all these wonderful analyses and keeping us going. Happy New and Brilliant 2024 to you and yours!
To me, the song “I’ll see your heart and I’ll raise you mine” by BellX1 is a near perfect song for the husbands. On first listen I was convinced it was a fan song. Mentions an Angel and a demon who met in the garden of Eden being friends and playing poker, swapping favors and admiration and in the process becoming both indistinguishable and deeply in love. What's with the angel and what's with the devil They keep swapping shoulders and I can't tell which from which "Will you be my Kriskindle? Will you be my better nature?" says one to the other But I think they're only showing off I caught them play poker and I think it was the devil who said "I'll see your heart and I'll raise you mine" Yea, they keep swapping shoulders I think there's something going on "Will you be my sweet pea? Will you be the card up my sleeve?" says one to the other and this time they hold their gaze for too long Now they're playing poker and this time it's the angel who says "I'll see your heart and I'll raise you mine" This is the story of the angel who played poker with the devil in the Garden of Eden before it all went pear shaped They said "I'll see your heart and I'll raise you mine" I mean come on, right?!
I had only just finished the series when the playlist was released, ao I was VERY deep in my feelings when I listened to the songs. Book of Love about made me pass out with how perfect it was. Thank you for all the research you do.
Can I just say that the Book of Love is my favourite song ever? Both recorded by the Magnetic Fields and Peter Gabriel, it is a song that has given me hope and made me smile through the years. It's a song I've performed live more than once, it's a song I've sung for my partner, it really, really means a lot to me. When I read it was on the Inneffable playlist I had to do a double take and got so emotional, I nearly teared up. If it makes its way into season three, I am going to sob my eyes out. There is no practical reason why I've shared this information, I just wanted to share it out loud.
From Crowley's POV: Slipknot - Snuff. Lyrics are just perfect: "Bury all your secrets in my skin Come away with innocence, and leave me with my sins" "You couldn't hate enough to love Is that supposed to be enough? I only wish you weren't my friend Then I could hurt you in the end I never claimed to be a saint" From Crowley's POV, but much happier: Hozier - Eden. "Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door" I always think of Crowley's love to Azi when I hear this song :) It's harder to find a song which fits Aziraphale's POV, maybe because he's the one leaving. But I think about him while listening to Lana Del Rey's "Say Yes To Heaven": "If you dance, I'll dance And if you don't, I'll dance anyway Give peace a chance Let the fear you have fall away" And for both of them: David Kushner - Daylight. It's like written about them! "This lust is a burden that we both share Two sinners can't atone from a lone prayer Souls tied, intertwined by our pride and guilt" "Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time You and I drink the poison from the same vine Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time Hidin' all of our sins from the daylight" "There's darkness in the distance I'm beggin' for forgiveness But I know I might resist it" Even the music video is so on point with burning bookshelves and so on. I was listening to this song on repeat after I watched season 2 (crying my eyes out ;)). Thank you so much for your analysis, Sendarya, it's great as always!
Ah! Love the playlist, but run do not walk to YT to see Etta James and Dr. John's duet of "I'd rather go blind". So perfect! Thank you for the beautiful video!
@sendarya If anyone cares my personal favorites after the end of S2 are "Love of my Life" for Crowley and "You take my Breath Away" for Aziraphale, both of them from Queen.
One song that reminds me of Crowley and Aziraphale is Wrong side of Heaven by Five finger death punch. It's a metal song so it's not a love ballad for sure, but I think the line "I'm on the wrong side of heaven, and the righteous side of hell" hits home for the two.
Wow. Most people might not guess this, but I'm really into metal. Good metal. Have been since I was a teen. As a child of the 80s I tend to gravitate towards older metal, but this was great. Listened twice, and added it to my playlist. Going to check out more of their work! Thank you so much for sharing, it's outside the box, and I love it.
@@Sendarya Of course! I found your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching your theories! My sister called me to tell be about Good Omens when the first season was in the works, convinced me to read the book. The visual poetry as you perfectly put it is definitely one of the reasons that it is so attention grabbing -as well as the amazing world building, witty jokes, and great characters. You're videos are teaching me so much about the extremely subtle symbolism and meaning in the sets, costumes, and props. You certainly have an eye for the details and I will never stop watching!
I didn't give the playlist much thought before. But after watching this video I am listening repeatedly to the Book of Love crying while thinking of Aziracrow.
"Didn't Want to Have to Do It" by The Lovin' Spoonful is what I first thought for Aziraphale. It's heartbreaking. And "Untouchable Face" by Ani DeFranko seems appropriate for Crowley at the end of Season 2.
Thank you, Sendarya! When the list came out, I had the opposite reaction in that I couldn't bring myself to listen to the songs. They just seems so odd as choices (I have Titanic PTSD) so thank you for making me much more comfortable and hopeful with this list.
I'm not one for playlists, and when the playlist dropped, I did listen to all the songs, but didn't dissect any of the lyrics or anything and sort of just... moved on. But I'm so glad this video exists because WOW! I'm amazed!
This was such a great analysis! One Crowley song I put on my GO playlist before s2 even came out was “I Know” by Fiona Apple. To me it really captures Crowley’s patience and frustration waiting for Aziraphale to come around. The way the last “I know” just lingers unspoken gives me chills every time I also love “Ready Now” by dodie as an Aziraphale song
Ok, this is crazy: over a week ago, I created ‘Heartbroken’ playlists for Zira & Crowley, using songs based on the 5 stages of grief. It was inspired by Pins I saw of other peoples’ Ineffable playlists, but I never heard anything about an official playlist released by Amazon and endorsed by NG. I shared my playlists on tumblr JUST TODAY, around 9am, and I’m JUST NOW watching this vid at 6:15pm. I also made a separate playlist for the both of them, sort of like a back-and-forth or songs that would bring up memories of the other for both. Ya know, like ‘The Book of Love’ on the Official Angelic Playlist. I knew absolutely nothing about how the official one was made; I didn’t know about it AT ALL. … like, what???!!!
Here’s also a few other songs that are very “ineffable husbands” coded and a bit obscure “ Only A Fool” by Father John Misty (With POV from Crowley in mind) ( POV loves someone for seemingly all of human history, commenting on how several great human thinkers all wise for never taking the risk of letting themselves become hurt by love, but they themself are a fool, as even as they have been heartbroken by their love over and over through the years they continue to want their love) “Furthest Star” by Dirt Poor Robins (POV Crowley) ( Alpha Centauri need I say more) “Trouble” by Connie Converse ( POV Aziraphale) ( POV tentatively allowing themselves to become close and fond of some deemed a bad influence by all) “You’re My World” by Anya Taylor-Joy ( It’s In the title ) “Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks” by The Brunettes (POV Crowley) (Again it’s in the title. Just two people pining while feeding ducks in a park in London. Also pov mentions their lover being stubborn and it driving them nuts as them having a “ disillusion halo”) “Dinner At The Ritz” by City Boy ( POV Crowley) ( Secret long term relationship, rendez-vous and discrete dinners at the ritz. POV wants their thing to be official but knows this will likely never happen bc their lover won’t ever accept running away with them) “A Rainy Night in Soho” by the Progues ( sweetly romantic for once, just two seemingly immortal beings reflecting on their life long companionship over their lives as it rains in Soho) “Stardust” by Nat King Cole ( POV Aziraphale) ( I mean the lyrics mentions the “ stardust of a song” of nightingales in a garden, where he and his lover were together, as the melody attached to the memory of being in love and the bittersweet acceptance that the singer will never feel that kind of love again, but at least they had the privilege to know it briefly) “She’s Always A Woman” by Billy Joel ( POV Crowley) ( Just. Ow. POV of singer adores a woman who keeps breaking his heart, but no matter what she does to hurt him he still can’t stop loving her. “that the Garden of Eden line, woah) “Soho Square” by Kristy MacColl ( POV Crowley) (Also, Ouch, but at least it’s hopeful? Breakup song that talks about an empty park bench in Soho, pov is pissed and hurt at their ex but still adores them ) “Your Body, My Temple” by Will Wood ( More Crowley coded than this is near impossible, this is just about a demon being so so down bad with someone they denounce all other power that be to solely devote themselves to one person and protect them from God themself as both seem doomed by them. The beloved clearly doesn’t notice that this is more than platonic and again, pov is incredibly down bad in love but contents themselves with just being friends. Wooo) “The End Of The World” by Skeeter Davis ( End of the world is equivalent of heartbreak) “Two Thousand Years” ( this is just a beautiful song about love, hate and humanity.)
Thank you for this detailed and exciting analysis! In general I like to add: Be careful what you wish for. This words, also David Tennant said in an interview a couple of weeks ago, crosses my mind every time I hear or read ideas what will happen in Good Omens season three. In this case it means: Don’t make them human! But don’t misunderstand, I also want Crowley and Aziraphale come together as a pair and share their love they have for one another. And I’m sure that will happen in the end, but maybe in a slightly different way, than we’ll expect. GO fans know, that Aziraphale and Crowley aren’t really gay (or hetero), because they are no human beings. And love between angels isn’t physical. There’s also in the GO book, that “Angels are sexless until they really want to make an effort“. That’s what Crowley did with the kiss. (Yes I know he’s a demon, but also a former angel.) This was his last effort on Aziraphale to change the angels decision, comparing with his movie related theory “One fabulous kiss and we’re good“. In season three it’ll be time for a real love between our beloved ineffable idiots - according to their nature.
I loved your analysis! I’ve been listening to ‘just like heaven’ by The Cure a lot lately because I just think some of the lyrics fit really well with the show in general. For example: “And I promise you, I promise that I’ll run away with you” since Crowley always wants Aziraphale to go to Alpha Centauri with him. Also the ending of the song that talks about waking up to find your love gone including the line “alone above a raging sea, that stole the only girl I know” which just makes me think of how the Metatron stole Aziraphale from Crowley and Crowley will probably try to sleep it off. And just a few other small details that I won’t bore you with haha.
My first hobby/Fandom/passion is music so I could go on forever here. I think Show Must Go On is a promising song while albeit stressful. If Neil was going to break our hearts with a Queen song, the catalogue is flush with more distressing songs that he could have chosen that would be making us sob into pillows for the next decade. But he didn't.
Thanks for the video and the in-depth analysis! To me 'Fall Out Boy - Flu Game' is a must for a Crowley-centric playlist, I mean just look at these lines: Last night I dreamt I still knew you I carved out a place in this world for two But it's empty without you I've got all this love I've got to keep to myself All this effort to make it look effortless Confront all the pain like a gift under the tree Oh please, I can't be who you need me to be[...] They underline Crowley's helplessness and his struggle to understand where they went wrong in S2E6. I can see him doubting whether he can ever be good enough for Aziraphale and questioning whether he knows/understands Aziraphale at all. The lines about keeping his love to himself make me think of 'you go too fast for me, Crowley' Additionally, the similarity between the conversation in the show where they talk about carving out an existence for themselves and these lyrics is uncanny.
"My Heart Will Go On" lines of 'Near, far, wherever you are/I believe that the heart does go on/(why does the heart go on?)' seems to play well with Aziraphale being in heaven, 'near, far, wherever you are' and him remembering that kiss with some fondness and love, 'the heart does go on' despite maybe not understanding, 'why does the heart go on'. 'Once more, you open the door/And you're here in my heart/And my heart will go on and on' These lyrics could show how when Aziraphale is back on earth Aziraphale believes Crowley might come back and the shut door on their relationship maybe opened, Aziraphale shall continue to love Crowley until then and that love may continue until the moments they are talking again. But as this isn't a song Neil requested on the playlist this is just speculation and could mean absolutely nothing but these seem a little important definitely as this song just screams Aziraphale.
Such beautiful video, I confess I cried a little. I think you're spot on, as always. Thanks for putting so much work and efford into this. Happy holidays dear, Sendarya. ✨️💜 I have a couple of songs that make me think of the plot and our Ineffable Husbands but they might not fit entirely. But listen to them and tell me what you think about them. • Little Black Angel originally by Death in June but I like Ladytron's cover better. • The Sparrows And The Nightingales by Wolfsheim I have a lot of other songs but I feel they fit even less. 😅 Happy new year to you and your loved ones. ✨️❤🎉
I had never heard either of these songs, thank you for sharing these lesser known gems! I really like Little Black Angel, I think it is rather fitting. The Sparrows And The Nightingales by Wolfsheim has some great lyrics as well (reminds me a bit of David Bowies sound in the early 80's, too). Happy new year to you and yours as well!! 🥳
There is so much to unpack from this playlist, and your interpretation! I like the idea of the 5 stages of grief and I think you're spot-on with The Book of Love and a couple others. Some of them I diverge, I had to really listen to them to be sure. Here's my choices in that line of thought: Denial Crowley: Midnight Rain - Taylor Swift (I feel like this song fits with Crowley's constant surprise at Aziraphale's absolute blindness to how he had changed since his downward saunter and how he felt Aziraphale WANTED to see him vs. how he is). Aziraphale: Just My Imagination - The Temptations (Aziraphale wanted it all, but he also thought the forbidden nature was a dealbreaker, he's never known how to reconcile this) Anger Crowley: Cry Me A River - Julie London (Spot on with your choice, the simmering fury in this song fits Crowley to a T) Aziraphale: The Show Must Go On - Queen (As you stated, the story behind this song is magnificent and heartbreaking, and I think it fits Aziraphale's anger at a situation beyond his control, he puts on that fake smile at the end of season 2, that face he needs to cope with his agony. He'll do what's necessary in spite of overwhelming grief and opposition) Bargaining Crowley: Could've Been - H.E.R. (Crowley is H.E.R. in this, trying to bargain with the Aziraphale in his mind, explaining why he couldn't go with him, and the other voice is his own sub-conscious trying to fill in what he thinks Aziraphale would say: "You COULD have, you just chose not to.." ) Aziraphale: Heart And Soul - The Four Aces (This song is deceptively upbeat, but it also speaks of begging to be adored and gladly falling overboard - Aziraphale desperately wants to be with Crowley and he always has, I feel like this would be him trying to confess his hopes and dreams in a way to convince Crowley to change his mind - even though I also personally believe Aziraphale knew Crowley would say no and said the things he said to purposely drive him away) Depression Crowley: I'd Rather Go Blind - Etta James (to me.. Crowley's depression after all of this would take a more dismissive "I can't even look at you" path. He'd rather go blind than watch Aziraphale kowtow to Upstairs' playbook) Aziraphale: In Dreams - Roy Orbison (This one was tough because it could go either way for both of them, but I think it just fits Aziraphale more in this case. Crowley MIGHT cry, but I think it would take more than this for him to admit to dreaming of Aziraphale and waking in tears, whereas the other way round I think Aziraphale would get up daily having to hid Acceptance Crowley: I'm A Mess - Bebe Rexha (I had a hard time placing this song, but I settled here because it's not HAPPY. It's pretending to be happy, pretending that the future is bright, that things are going to be okay. That's very Crowley and I think that's what he'd need to do to move forward) Aziraphale: My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion (Perfection. Just perfection). AND YES... The Book of Love has got to be The Ineffable Husbands Reunited. I can't even imagine it anywhere else.
Great explanation of why you put each song where, and I love it. I kept flip flopping a couple myself. I think Midnight Rain might be the most divisive sung in here as it could be taken soooo many ways. I waffled with In Dreams as well, initially also placing it with Aziraphale. It's also been sick in my head along with The Book of Love the most often. I literally awake with Roy Orbison wailing mournfully in my hrad, lol. Could’ve Been was the one I had the hardest time getting my own personal feeling for. I really like your take on it!! I love your interpretations, thank you for sharing them!
@@Sendarya Thank you! I'm a pretty musical/music-dedicated person, and I love finding how songs fit things, deeper meanings. I get "The Show Must Go On" stuck in my head a LOT. Both Queen's version and the one from 'Moulin Rouge'. I love that there are so many layers and twists to both of our beloved Ineffable Husbands that multiple songs could mean multiple, very different things for each. Plus Neil putting in his two (three?) cents adds that extra layer of "Wait what does THAT mean??" Looking forward to more content and to season 3!
There are so many songs that I feel are must haves on a Good Omens playlist. "Under Your Scars" by Godsmack is a great one because I feel like it conveys both of their traumas, how they are opposites, and their yearning to be together. "Demons" by Imagine Dragons is a great one for Crowley, as I feel like it shows his insecurities and how he wants and loves Aziraphale, but feels like he will never be good enough because he is fallen. Kind of a bonus, but I love "Angel With a Shotgun" by The Cab because I am so so hoping that that song will describe Aziraphale at some point in S3. It just feels so perfect for the moment when he realizes the truth of heaven and that Crowley matters so much more to him (especially with the little tidbit about him having a derringer in the bookshop---not exactly a shotgun, but close enough I think).
Yet another thoughtful and excellently put together analysis! Must to mull over and think about all you have provided. 😊 Thank you and wishes for a safe and wonderful New Years and 2024.
Lovely video and I'm so glad I paused it to listen to The Book Of Love before I continued the video. Got a little teary over the whole playlist and I'm glad you did an analysis video on it because I didn't have much time to think about it. I'm embarrassed to admit as soon as I saw the list of the first line of every song spelling out Season Three, I knew right away it the first line of every song but it took me another little while to realize that's how Jim was organizing the bookshop. I don't think without this video I ever would have put Show Must Go On with Aziraphale, but you're right it totally fits the smile at the end of the of E6. Thanks for including more of the details about Show Must Go On. I didn't know much about the details of the song but the song has gotten me through some tough times including when the Sandy Hook shooting happened on my birthday which was also the Day the playlist and the announcement came out (my birthday) so I needed a little space to process it. In fact a little while before the announcement and the list dropped I was singing The Show Must Go on in my car and UA-cam suggested - do you want to listen to some Shostakovich now? I love the song Cry me a River and I hate to think of Crowley as hurt and broken. Before the playlist was released I saw fan videos about Crowley for I'm a Mess. I'm someone who never gets into new music. I only like music I already know so GO videos introduced me to that song Two Birds by Regina Spektor. Then there's the Grieving in the Bentley with Crowley playlist on UA-cam which introduced me to Pale Blue Eyes by The Velvet Underground and Queen's I Want To Break Free made me feel a whole new kind of way. I also want Crowley to be comforted by someone - Muriel and Nina as he goes through this and deeply, deeply hope that Aziraphale gives Crowley his ring when all this is over. How are we going to make it to 2026. My heart can't take it - and I also don't want their story to be complete.
It's such a double edged sword fot the fandom. How will we survive the wait? What will we do with ourselves once it's over? How will we survive watching each episode when it does come out? All of us are going to be "I'm a mess" for a while, lol. I'm sorry to hear about having your birthday associated with that terrible tragedy. I can hardly bear to think about it. This fandom has also introduced me to new music! I've not heard of the sing, Two Birds, and I'll check it out, thank you. ☺️
@@Sendarya Yes, I was excited to get good news about season 3 on my birthday and sadly it was followed by immediate anxiety that I don't want their story to end - and I think waiting excitedly for so long that right now it seems impossible will make that ending so much harder to bear. But at least we'll always have fan art and fanfic.
I ADORE The book of love, but my petty gripe is that they went with Peter Gabriel because I love the quiet, conformable vibes of the original magnetic fields version. That one SOUNDS like the experience of having known and loved someone for a very long time
@@Sendarya Oh my gosh yes! Not to pile on but the version of "A Nightingale Sang in Barkley Square" they used in the show isn't my thing either. I'm sorry 😬
I'm just finding/going through all of your analysis videos - they're *wonderful*. I'm so geeked about it, I was a Lit major, but hardly anyone I know enjoys these kinds of deep dives, into anything. You're really filling a need, here. ❤ Regarding the songs - I instantly knew Book of Love had to be one of Neil's choices, partly because it's so gorgeous and a perfect blend, but also because it's unusual. (And probably not for nothing, it's such a great cover song, with a beautiful, soaring arrangement - and Neil's 'rearranged' and done a 'cover' of all of this biblical mythology, etc.) Something I found interesting - I was watching the video of PG's live performance of Book of Love with the orchestra - and the very next song/video to play was also from that concert, and from the same album of cover songs (called Scratch My Back) - and it was The Power of Your Heart, which is a Lou Reed song. (Understand, I know very little about Velvet Underground, I only just realized through your vids that that's Neil's favorite band. But - given that this is what it is, and is on the same album, I thought it was interesting, especially since the lyrics talk about being very different people, seeing the world very differently, but 'flying around the world' to bring someone back and ask them to marry them.) And now, just about the same dang thing just happened to me again - I literally *just* went to listen to the original version of Book of Love, since I'd never heard it and someone in the comments suggested it, and yeah - it's absolutely lovely. But then the very next song to play was another Magnetic Fields song, same album ( I think), called Nothing Matters When We're Dancing. And the lyrics.......well. Go look them up. They're a delightful match to these two. I think I'd definitely put this song on my playlist. Anyway, my last note/mention/whatever of a song that I think is perfect for these two, and would definitely be on my playlist - Underneath the Stars by Kate Rusby. It's beautiful, and the lyrics are so perfect. Plus, there's a link to Michael Sheen - his movie Heartlands, where his character Colin is about the most Aziraphale-like in his entire ouvre, is built around a number of Kate Rusby songs, and she herself features in a central scene where Colin is carried away by her music, and starts to realize some things. Underneath the stars I'll meet you Underneath the stars I'll greet you There beneath the stars I'll leave you Before you go of your own free will Go gently Underneath the stars you met me Underneath the stars you left me I wonder if the stars regret me At least you'll go of your own free will Go gently Here beneath the stars I'm landing And here beneath the stars not ending Why on earth am I pretending? I'm here again, the stars befriending They come and go of their own free will Go gently Go gently Underneath the stars you met me And Underneath the stars you left me I wonder if the stars regret me I'm sure they'd like me if they only met me They come and go of their own free will Go gently Go gently Go gently ua-cam.com/video/iaN8M0pDOeM/v-deo.html Anyway. None of this is important, I'm sure, I just found it all interesting, and finding new and perfect music recommendations is never a bad thing. 😄
I think all soul songs must be Crowleys, because he has a soul collection in his apartment. So this is his most favourite music. I think Erziraphales heart is full rock 'n roll.
I like this! I've seen a lot of fans kind of hating on the playlist, but I thought there were several really fitting songs in there, and you found a way to bring everything together quite beautifully, I think.
I think they did a good job of putting a little something for most people in there. But not everyone will be able to listen and enjoy it. Music really is so personal! I am loving all the sharing, and exposure to songs I've never heard before, but I totally understand those that don't enjoy it. Thank you so much for the comment!
I'm quiet surprise you put the Temptetion's song in the Aziraphale's releted song list, to me is so very Crowley! Just think about the way he literally watched Aziraphel with heart eyes through the window, multiple times, in S2 just to be then left thinking what they had was "just his imagination" ...I mean.
Hiraeth (Welsh) is a pull on the heart which conveys a meaning of missing something irretrievably lost. A person who has loved and lost feels this deep sense of longing. Life is bittersweet but somehow we all still have an insatiable longing for a perfect and beautiful world/ a perfect and beautiful love. Our favourite couple carry aeons of pain, from throughout the ages, so of course we wish them a perfect and beautiful love. If few of us make it here, then at least they should have it, so we can still believe in it. (with acknowledgments to Susan Cain) This is our longing that has hooked us😘
My playlist consists of songs C would give to A to communicate his feelings: the Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go cover by Soft Cell, Hold Me Now by the Thompson Twins, Come and Get Your Love by Redbone (very saucy) and Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel (“Don't go trying some new fashion Don't change the color of your hair, mhm-mmh You always have my unspoken passion Although I might not seem to care”) With regard to S3 speculation, an old Stevie Wonder tune came to mind: Have a Talk With God. I think Crowley will wind up doing that even though he won’t seek it out. You are a 🤩 and whatever the schedule-weekly, occasionally-I’ll watch. Cheers.
Wow, what a great list! I was a huge fan of the Thompson Twins back in the day, love that song. That Stevie Wonder song is a great pick. Must go listen to it again right now! Also, thank you so much. ❤️
Okay I have to say that after I lived through the 90s I was a little embarrassed by the emotional reaction My Heart Will Go on did inspiring me at one point and I have avoided the song ever since , much like Balthazar in supernatural. However this song fits Aziraphale too well and it makes me too sad, to think of him fondly remembering Crowley who is now safe, but thinking they'll never be together again..
I had a similar reaction when I saw this song on the list. Loved it back in the day, but haven't listened to it in years and years. Thought it might feel a bit worn out? Put it on with the Ineffables in mind, and blam, song is rejuvenated, lol
In reference to the Temptations song being possible foreshadowing for season three/the happy ending, I think there's already two (or three!) kids that Aziraphale and Crowley are going to be concerned over: the original baby three card monty, Adam, Warlock, and possibly Greasy Johnson! Granted, they'll probably be around 18 by season three, but I think all humans are like babies to immortals. ; )
I don't know but I think a lot of people is about to pay while Crowley goes through this process, I mean he's about to give up on helping out and embrace his evilness or bitterness which I hoping this is where Maggie and Nina might come into play or maybe simply watching them finally become something more will ease things for him in some way.
So the version you’re talking about for the book of love is Peter Gabriel’s version, but it’s not his song it is Stephin Merritt song. it’s off the Magnetic Fields, 69 Love Songs, which I highly recommend.
Almost certainly a total coincidence, but Heart and Soul appears in Lucifer - he and Chloe play it on the piano together the first time they open up to one another a little.
Hello Sendarya, seems like I‘m a little late to the party, but my playlist looks like this: - Lovely (Billie Eilish, Khalid) - Gilded Lily (Cults) „Haven‘t I given enough?“ as Crowley‘s inner monologue and „Always the fool with the slowest heart“ as a reference to Aziraphale being always very hesitant - Fairytale (Alexander Rybak) „I‘m in love with a fairytale even though it hurts“ (Crowley); „I don‘t know what I was doing, when suddenly we fell apart (Aziraphale); „Nowadays, I cannot find her“ (Them being seperated); „But when I do, we‘ll get a brand new start“ (Them hopefully getting their Happy Ending) - Pretty When You Cry (Lana Del Rey) „Don‘t say you need me when you leave and leave again“ as Crowley‘s answer to Aziraphale‘s „I need you“ - Two Birds (Regina Spektor) Aziraphale as the bird who won‘t let go of the wire aka Heaven and Crowley as the bird who tries to fly away aka seperate himself from Heaven and Hell and run away with Aziraphale - Chasing Cars (Snow Patrol) - Lost on You (LP) I actually saw this song mentioned in another comment, which made me very happy. I just think „Will you remember all the danger we came from?“, „I‘ll never get to Heaven, cause I don‘t know how“ and „Wishin‘ I could the machinations, understand the toil of expectations in your mind“ are too perfect - Only Love Can Hurt Like This (Paloma Faith) The title explains it pretty much. A deadly, burning kiss is also mentioned - Say Yes To Heaven (Lana Del Rey) I think this was/is pretty popular with the fandom. Many (myself included) just think the lyrics kinda sum up the breakup. „Say yes to Heaven“ for Aziraphale and „Say yes to me“ for Crowley - Arcade (Duncan Laurence) „A broken heart is all that‘s left“ and „Loving you is a losing game“ maybe to how Crowley feels now - A Thousand Years (Christina Perri) „I have loved you for a thousand years“ has never been more true than with these two - Dynasty (MIIA) „Thought we built a dynasty that Heaven couldn‘t shake“ is funny, because it is actually Heaven, that „destroys“ it - The Way I Loved You (Taylor Swift) For me it feels like it‘s harder to find songs that sound like Aziraphale than to find songs that sound like Crowley. Idk why Well, that was my playlist and this was a great video.
Wow, thank you for taking the time to write all of this out! I'm also glad to have heard Lost on You, which was new to me. What a great song, a perfect fit. It's one of the best new to me suggestions I've seen. Love your Billie Eilish choice! Her music can be very eclectic, and that song is a great match. Dynasty!! I hasn't thought of that song, great choice!! Such a good list, thanks for sharing!
LOVING every one of your Good Omens videos. I've thought for ages that what I'd LOVE to see is for Aziraphale to give Crowley his ring. Also, because Aziraphale's fingers are a bit thicker than Crowley's, I can see the ring fitting his ring finger rather than his pinky. And I just would adore to see Crowley wearing Aziraphale's angel ring on his ring finger. I have something I've been thinking about that I'd like to know your thoughts. Why is there a Hell? In 1x06 Gabrie says: “Crowley and the rest were cast out, but nothing was ever really settled.” But why not? So, my question is did Hell Actually Loose the Great War? If the rebellion in Heaven was actually quashed, would there even be a Hell? Bear with me here. If you win a war outright, if the would-be rebels were beaten, you don’t hand them new weapons and give them their own realm to rule as they please. Yes, it's clear that those cast out have been hurt and altered by the experience. I think there's a good argument to be made that Crowley has PTSD from it. Still, the rebel angels got the freedom to create their own realm, to rule themselves, and to have considerable sway on earth. They remain an armed and dangerous enemy to Heaven. Dealing with and thwarting Hell seems to be a major preoccupation in Heaven. Instead of becoming less dangerous by falling, the angels who were cast out arguably became a greater threat. In fact, I’d argue that Heaven can't stop them from having considerable sway on earth. They SAY it's so people can make the choice between good and evil. Something that Aziraphale clearly believes. However, when you look at the archangels I don't buy it. As we see in the Job mini-episode, individual humans mean nothing to them. Earth and humans are there as part of their conflict with Hell and nothing more. It's part of the Great Plan, but humans themselves don't matter in that plan. Why then would they grant Hell access to earth for the sole purpose of giving individual humans the option to choose. I sounds to me like a company line to hide the fact that they can’t stop Hell. This is especially interesting when we see how Heaven deals with those who step out of line later. Aziraphale is sentenced to die by hellfire. Gabriel is to have his memory wiped and to be demoted. Lastly, there’s a general threat at one point that whoever is found to be helping Gabriel is going to be erased from the book of life and will never have been. During Gabriel’s trial Metatron does say that it would look bad for Heaven to cast another prince into the outer darkness. Instead, they will just wipe his memory and reassign him. This is the ONLY time the possibility of another fall is even mentioned. As an aside, I do think that Aziraphale’s punishment, done completely without a trial, was payback. I honestly think that that was about Gabriel, Micheal, and Uriel getting revenge. Aziraphale and Crowley had humiliated their superiors and both sides wanted them wiped out in painful ways so badly that they were actually willing to work together to do it. So, falling was never an option for Aziraphale after the Arma-wasn’t. Besides, Hell wouldn’t have wanted him any more than Heaven did. So, I don’t actually think that his punishment can be seen as part of an overall pattern except for that of the archangels being total douches, but that’s another rant. Anyway, in throwing out the rebellious angels, Heaven created a permanent enemy, an armed camp they know from the start they will have to fight again one day to actually settled the war. One that they can’t control. This brings up the possibility of either the rebels winning or, more likely in my opinion, the war in Heaven was a stalemate. The BEST the armies of Heaven were able to do was to force the rebels out. They could stop the immediate hostilities, but that was all. They couldn’t stop the other side from rearming and getting ready for a second great war. They can’t stop them from doing anything, really. So, while the rebels didn’t manage to overthrow Heaven, they did arguably get the next best thing. No, Hell isn’t nearly as nice as Heaven. In fact, you could argue that it’s like kids getting kicked out of their rich parent’s mansion and into the gutter. But it’s still freedom as opposed to being wiped out of existence or having your memory wiped. This would mean that the fall itself was a last desperate attempt to stop the rebellion, not a punishment chosen after a total victory. Besides, I don’t see Heaven as ever wanting to cast any more angels into Hell. At that point, they would be giving Hell more demons. Every angel that falls after the great fall is Heaven giving Hell more firepower as it were. I know this is a crazy long comment, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about. I have other reasons for this theory, but this is the basic overview. Thoughts?
Hello! Great question, and some very excellent points and ideas. I think it could be asked of the lore from which this originates as well. Why does God give Satan his own realm? Why cast down rebellious angels? Did heaven win the initial great war, or was it more of a draw? I agree with you on the last for sure, it doesn't seem like they won. It's probably ineffable. I also agree, the non-trials were very much vengeance, not justice. These would be an interesting topics to explore, thank you!
@@Sendarya I cannot stop thinking about Good Omens and this has become a theory I cannot make go away. I mentioned it to someone else, who said that The Fall was likely part of the ineffable plan from the beginning. That God needed there to be an evil side for humans to be able to choose between good and evil. That didn’t fit for me because of how obsessed Gabriel and rest seem to be with finally winning against hell. Then I thought about it more. Because there’s no reason both things can’t be true. Since, it’s clear that the archangels don’t actually know what the ineffable plan is. So, expanding one what I’ve already suggested… what if God always intended for The Great War to be a draw? Obviously, this would be something She never shared with anyone else. However, that would mean that God created a certain number of angels for the purpose for the purpose of casing them into hell. Meaning that Crowley and the others never had a choice about what was going to happen to them. That adds a whole new layer to the situation. So, what if heaven didn’t win the war, but no one is aware that they were never meant to. Although, that does raise another question, was Crowley created to fall? Is that why his questioning nature never fit in heaven? He was created not to fit in. If that’s the case, though, that would mean that God created Crowley intending to cast him into a lake of boiling sulfur. Which does NOT put God in a very good light, if you ask me.
Some of my song choices are: "White Flag" by Dido "I Would Die 4 U" by Prince "Down in a Hole" by Alice in Chains "Love Me Again" by John Newman "Angel Fire" and "Always, Forever and Now" by Tret Fure
The fandoms reaction to “Good old-fashioned lover boy” will be NOTHING compared to the reaction if we get “Love of my life” in S3!!!
I died of love with Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy! 🥰🥰🥰
EXACTLY I recently remembered this song existed and I thought “WHY THE HELL IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT IT!”
It fits their current situation too fucking well to be missed!
It's one of the best Queen songs tbh, it's really beautiful
I am also hoping for Who wants to live forever, Breakthrough and Those were the days of our lives.
We heard the song love of my life and my husband just says, Good Omens lol.
"Muriel, Eric, and the Bentley"
The fandom could never have recovered from that deleted scene where Eric tries to hit Aziraphale. Not our little guy
Agreed! Doesn't fit him at all. Glad it was cut
@@Sendarya I liked Crowley's reaction but I also like Eric so I agree, I'm glad it was cut
..... Cut scene? Where may I find this cut scene? Please share with a fellow GO obsessed fan starving for new content!
@@Jen_S_Hassler1258 "Good Omens deleted scene 7 'can I hit him"" should take you to it. I recommend watching it for Michael Sheen's acting alone
@@ctwofirst6635 Sorry, idk how else to get you to it since youtube doesn't like links in the comments :(
It's on the dvd, but not everyone has the dvd
"No matter the personal cost to him, Aziraphale will dig down and find the strength to do what he believes is right."
I couldn't agree more. Our angel has a clear moral compass and some serious backbone.
I can see Crowley blasting Olivia Rodrigo's Driver's License in the Bentley, trying and failing to convince himself to throw away Aziraphale's things, mildly concerning passersby
That is both sad and funny!
Everyday it’sa getting closer…
Everyday it’sa getting closer…
Everyday it’sa getting closer…
*going insane noises*
😂
The only songs I guessed right was: The Show Must Go On (Because Queen) and The Book of Love (Because of the similarity to The Book of Life). Neil... Neil is really cooking up something, I can smell it.
Crowley's POV: Pale blue eyes by the Velvet Underground.
I’m a huge fan of the band Big Thief so the song “Sparrow” always reminded me of Good Omens. Especially the lyrics “She has the poison inside her, she talks to snakes and they guide her”. Like come on that’s too perfect.
I'd never heard this song, thank you for sharing it. Just listened and yeah, it's really spot on!
I hope very much that "book of love" is in season 3. I have loved this song for years. It is just beautiful. Your video's are always amazing.
Especially with these lyrics (Crowley regular, Aziraphale in parentheses):
"With you, I could summon the gods and the stars
(Come on love, please, don't start)
Watch them dance out the plays that we wrote from the heart
(Sing your notes, play your part, then we'll leave)
And we'd laugh at the ghosts of our fears
(We were gods),
we were kids."
And also to sweeten the pot, it includes probably the most perfect and oddly specific line I've ever found scouting out fandom songs:
"This isn't a break-up, dear heart, it's a season finale"
Wow, thank you for sharing this! What a great song, it really does sound like it was written for them.
@@Sendarya Ok it's apparently about the end of a relationship but shhhh... I'm great at alchemizing lyrics to fit my purposes, lol
Aww, this is a great thought! Erasure doesn't work on either of them because they protect each other. This is a lovely idea
Can anyone explain why I, as an 80 yr old!, am so totally hooked on this couple ?!
If you figure it out, I'd appreciate it if you can inform the rest of us! I think about half the fans are 40+ (I'm in this group myself).
But, welcome to the fandom!
I guess it must be pretty basic - if most unusual to get this quality: beautifully written, beautifully acted and beautifully filmed@@Sendarya
"Never Tear Us Apart" - INXS
"Undisclosed Desires" - Muse
"Resistance" -Muse
"Halo" - Depeche Mode
"One Caress" -Depeche Mode
"I Think I Love You" -The Partridge Family
"Here Comes The Rain Again" -Eurythmics
"Creep" -Radiohead
"I Will Wait For You" -Connie Francis
Great list, a lot of great songs, thank you!
That's really beautiful. It would be very bittersweet.
I adore the idea that the Journsls are literal books of love, though!
Thank you so much for all the words of understanding and support ❤️
You went right for the heart with one of most beautiful pieces of classical music!
kiss from a rose by seal would be an INSANE addition 😊
Ooooh! Loved this song back when ot came out. Beautiful choice!

*A candy-colored clown they call the sandman*
*Tiptoes to my room every night*
*Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper*
*Go to sleep, everything is alright*
-In Dreams by Roy Orbison
I just wanted to mention that, as a fan of Neil Gaiman’s other masterpiece, The Sandman, these lyrics brought a delighted smile to my face.
The song I immediately connected to them was Kathy’s Song by Simon and Garfunkel, especially the lyrics “I gaze beyond the rain drenched streets, to England where my heart lies” and “I stand alone without beliefs, the only truth I know is you”
Yes it broke my heart into even tinier pieces
Simon and Garfunkle are one of my favorite bands of all time. I have one of their songs in my personal playlist as well (I am a Rock!) but your choice here is even better. Love that one, great choice!
That last line, yeah...ouch my heart.
Another beautiful Queen song is Teo Torriate (Let Us Cling Together). It starts incredibly plaintively.
When I'm gone
No need to wonder if I ever think of you
The same moon shines
The same wind blows
For both of us, and time is but a paper moon
Be not gone
Though I'm gone
It's just as though I hold the flower that touches you
A new life grows
The blossom knows
There's no one else could warm my heart as much as you
Be not gone
Let us cling together as the years go by
Oh my love, my love
In the quiet of the night
Let our candle always burn
Let us never lose the lessons we have learned
手を取り合って このままでいこう 愛する人よ
静かな宵に 光を灯し 愛しき教えを抱き
Hear my song
Still think of me the way you've come to think of me
The nights grow long
But dreams live on
Just close your pretty eyes, and you can be with me
Dream on
手を取り合って このままでいこう 愛する人よ
静かな宵に 光を灯し 愛しき教えを抱き
When I'm gone
They'll say we're all fools, and we don't understand
Oh, be strong
Don't turn your heart
We're all
You're all
For all
For always
Let us cling together as the years go by
Oh my love, my love
In the quiet of the night
Let our candle always burn
Let us never lose the lessons we have learned
Beautiful! Maybe we'll hear the one in s3. Surely we'll get more Queen?
"Lost on you" by LP is fitting so well for me related to Crowley, I mean the lyrics are so deep and the question mark at the end "Is that lost on you?"
"Lost On You"
When you get older, plainer, saner
Will you remember all the danger
We came from?
Burning like embers, falling, tender
Longing for the days of no surrender
Years ago
And will you know
So smoke 'em if you got 'em
'Cause it's going down
All I ever wanted was you
I'll never get to heaven
'Cause I don't know how
Let's raise a glass or two
To all the things I've lost on you
Oh-oh
Tell me are they lost on you?
Oh-oh
Just that you could cut me loose
Oh-oh
After everything I've lost on you
Is that lost on you? [...]
Wish that I could see the machinations
Understand the toil of expectations
In your mind
Hold me like you never lost your patience
Tell me that you love me more than hate me
All the time
And you're still mine
So smoke 'em if you got 'em
'Cause it's going down
All I ever wanted was you
Let's take a drink of heaven
This can turn around
Let's raise a glass or two
To all the things I've lost on you
Oh-oh
Tell me are they lost on you?
Oh-oh
Just that you could cut me loose
Oh-oh
After everything I've lost on you
Is that lost on you?
I had not heard this song before, and of the many new to me songs I've listened to, recommend in these comments, this is probably my favorite. Thank you so much for sharing this. Great music, talented artist, perfect song!
Lost on You is also in my playlist
Personally, these are my must haves on any of my good omens related playlists:
1. good old fashioned lover boy
2. killer queen
3. somebody to love
4. the moon will sing - crane wives
5. tongues and teeth - crane wives
6. world we knew - Frank Sinatra
7. Unknown / Nth - Hozier
Fantastic list!
I'm soo amazed by people who analyse songs! I hardly ever pay attention to the lyrics, I just go with the feeling of the songs.
I love the way you analyse this series it's impressive the amount of detail there is, I would loose my mind if Aziraphale and Crowley got married
Pretty sure I'll just burst into happy tears, much to the bemusement and amusement of my family 😅
Great song choice. I love Billie Eillish, and that song is a really good one.
I couldn't get "Send Me An Angel" out of my head so I made my own video to it on my channel. I feel it just speaks of Good Omens.
This is my interpretation:
I also think these songs resemble the Stages of Grief:
I'd Rather Go Blind - Crowley (Denial):
I think the song is about Aziraphale and Metatron talking about leaving Crowley and eventually how they actually do it and how it breaks Crowley’s heart. But he does not want to see it. He puts his glasses on and shuts himself in his home/car. If he can't see Aziraphale, he doesn't want to see anything, especially not losing his love.
The Show Must Go On - Aziraphale (Denial):
It is about him searching for answers, searching for the sense of all this and his life.
Cry Me A River - Crowley (Anger):
It is about how Crowley and how he is/was so sad about Aziraphale’s leaving and how he cried a lot because of it. He believes that Aziraphale was not as broken as him and he doesn’t understand how he could leave so easily after all their adventures and memories of each other. He knows that he wants Aziraphale, but he is so frustrated that he can’t forgive him that easily.
Could’ve Been - Aziraphale (Anger):
It is about how Crowley confessed his love to him, but not going to heaven with him shows that his love is not enough. He now tells himself that they can’t be because Crowley doesn’t want to.
The Anger songs are about the miscommunication between them through the whole series and how both are frustrated because they think the other’s love isn’t enough. They think they are the person why cries/loves more and they don’t understand why the other person left them.
In Dreams - Crowley (Bargaining):
It’s about Crowley thinking what could have been if Aziraphale had run away with him, how he could have healed his sadness which he had the whole time after his fall, how they would have been happy together somewhere else, away from the toxic hell and heaven. But it is still only a dream.
Just My Imagination - Aziraphale (Bargaining):
It is about Aziraphale also thinking what could have been if Crowley came to heaven with him. How he hopes that it still comes true sometime. That Crowley finally can be happy again. Together.
These songs resemble their thoughts/dreams about what could have been if they had communicated right. If the other person had understood. They still dream about a life together and don’t lose hope.
I’m A Mess - Crowley (Depression):
It’s about him only trusting Aziraphale, but still denying the fact that he needs him. He hates himself, but still, he is an optimist and still tries to not lose hope.
Midnight Rain - Aziraphale (Depression):
He is sad about the fact that Crowley does not want a change and how he himself has changed a lot in the past years.
My Heart Will Go On - Crowley (Acceptance):
It’s about Crowley finally realizing how much he loves Aziraphale, even if he isn’t there. He wants to be with him forever and protect him the best he can.
Heart and Soul - Aziraphale (Acceptance):
It’s about Aziraphale also finally realizing that what he has felt all the time was love.
The Book of Love:
It represents the book "Good Omens" itself and all its characters and every sentence.
"I'm doing this for revenge
I'm doing this to try and stay true
I'm doing this for the ones
They left to twist in the wind
I'm doing this for you"
I found a song in making my own personal sad boi playlist for these two, a song called Us by Chxrlotte (lemme know if I spelled that wrong) and I read that she wrote it about the final fifteen? Like Crowley's side of it and man it is beautiful and so on point
Also Say Dont Go by Taylor Swift is very Aziraphale, on the other hand.
Wow, I just listened to Us by Chxrlotte, that's beautiful! That Taylor Swift song, ouch!
I picked 'The book of love' as one of Neil's songs because it was so different to the others &, while I love it, it's not a very well-known song.
"I'm a Mess" has been on my personal Playlist for ages. It would be awfully wonderful to have an ineffable wedding. ❤
Every time I listen to the playlist again it breaks my heart more. 😢
I always love your analyses. Your insights and attention to detail make them some of the best around.
That's very kind of you, thank you so much!
Just come across the song “I’ll see your heart and I’ll raise you mine” and it works so well for these two
I jest love the concept of book of love. Now I want it to happen.
❤ for me, it can be seen as being from Crowley's perspective in the first and second verses, Aziraphale's in the third and both in the fourth 💔
Here are the lyrics for the full song:
You know the distance never made a difference to me
I swam a lake of fire, I'd have walked across the floor of any sea
Ignored the vastness between all that can be seen
And all that we believe
So I thought you were like an angel to me
Funny how true colours shine in darkness and in secrecy
If there were scarlet flags
They washed out in the mind of me
Where a blinding light shone on you every night
And either side of my sleep
Where you were held frozen like an angel to me
Chorus:
It ain't the being alone
Sha-la-la
It ain't the empty home, baby
Sha-la-la
You know I'm good on my own
Sha-la-la
Sha-la-la, baby, you know it's more the being unknown
So much of the living, love, is the being unknown
You called me angel for the first time, my heart leapt from me
You smile now, I can see its pieces still stuck in your teeth
And what's left of it, I listen to it tick
Every tedious beat going unknown as any angel to me
Do you know, I could break beneath the weight
Of the goodness, love, I still carry for you?
That I'd walk so far just to take
The injury of finally knowing you
Chorus:
It ain't the being alone
Sha-la-la
It ain't the empty home, baby
Sha-la-la
You know I'm good on my own
Sha-la-la
Sha-la-la, baby
You know it's more the being unknown
And there are some people, love, who are better unknown
Thank you so much, and ty for sharing that song ❤️
What's with the angel
and what's with the devil
They keep swapping shoulders
and I can't tell which from which
"Will you be my Kriskindle?
Will you be my better nature?"
says one to the other
But I think they're only showing off
I caught them play poker
and I think it was the devil who said
"I'll see your heart
and I'll raise you mine"
Yea, they keep swapping shoulders
I think there's something going on
"Will you be my sweet pea?
Will you be the card up my sleeve?"
says one to the other
and this time they hold their gaze
for too long
Now they're playing poker
and this time it's the angel who says
"I'll see your heart
and I'll raise you mine"
This is the story of the angel
who played poker with the devil
in the Garden of Eden
before it all went pear shaped
They said
"I'll see your heart
and I'll raise you mine"
I mean come on, right?!
I had only just finished the series when the playlist was released, ao I was VERY deep in my feelings when I listened to the songs. Book of Love about made me pass out with how perfect it was.
Thank you for all the research you do.
It is my pleasure 🥰. Welcome to the fandom!
I really love that song too! 💗
From Crowley's POV: Slipknot - Snuff. Lyrics are just perfect:
"Bury all your secrets in my skin
Come away with innocence,
and leave me with my sins"
"You couldn't hate enough to love
Is that supposed to be enough?
I only wish you weren't my friend
Then I could hurt you in the end
I never claimed to be a saint"
From Crowley's POV, but much happier: Hozier - Eden.
"Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword
Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know
I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door"
I always think of Crowley's love to Azi when I hear this song :)
It's harder to find a song which fits Aziraphale's POV, maybe because he's the one leaving. But I think about him while listening to Lana Del Rey's "Say Yes To Heaven":
"If you dance, I'll dance
And if you don't, I'll dance anyway
Give peace a chance
Let the fear you have fall away"
And for both of them: David Kushner - Daylight. It's like written about them!
"This lust is a burden that we both share
Two sinners can't atone from a lone prayer
Souls tied, intertwined by our pride and guilt"
"Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
You and I drink the poison from the same vine
Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
Hidin' all of our sins from the daylight"
"There's darkness in the distance
I'm beggin' for forgiveness
But I know I might resist it"
Even the music video is so on point with burning bookshelves and so on. I was listening to this song on repeat after I watched season 2 (crying my eyes out ;)).
Thank you so much for your analysis, Sendarya, it's great as always!
Thank you, and thanks for that song rec, love it!
Ah! Love the playlist, but run do not walk to YT to see Etta James and Dr. John's duet of "I'd rather go blind". So perfect! Thank you for the beautiful video!
OOh, just went and listened. Wow, what an amazing performance!
@sendarya If anyone cares my personal favorites after the end of S2 are "Love of my Life" for Crowley and "You take my Breath Away" for Aziraphale, both of them from Queen.
Also "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton. I know rhe reason he wrote the song is the tragic death of his son but the lyrics pass so well...
@@Nylyan-yq8ql well damn. Thank you for that.
"Earth Angel" by the Penguins!
oooh, great song choice! I'm honestly surprised this hasn't come up yet
@@savveffects507 Thank you so much, and welcome to the channel! Sounds like you have been a fan for a while. :) Hurray for your sister!
I didn't give the playlist much thought before. But after watching this video I am listening repeatedly to the Book of Love crying while thinking of Aziracrow.
Yep. That song.
Can't get it outta my head.
"Didn't Want to Have to Do It" by The Lovin' Spoonful is what I first thought for Aziraphale. It's heartbreaking. And "Untouchable Face" by Ani DeFranko seems appropriate for Crowley at the end of Season 2.
I am getting to listen to such a lot of music that is new to me, suggested in the comments. These are both great, thank you!
Thank you, Sendarya! When the list came out, I had the opposite reaction in that I couldn't bring myself to listen to the songs. They just seems so odd as choices (I have Titanic PTSD) so thank you for making me much more comfortable and hopeful with this list.
I'm glad I could help. Music is such a personal and emotional experience. It's ok if you just didn't respond to the playlist!
I'm not one for playlists, and when the playlist dropped, I did listen to all the songs, but didn't dissect any of the lyrics or anything and sort of just... moved on. But I'm so glad this video exists because WOW! I'm amazed!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This was such a great analysis!
One Crowley song I put on my GO playlist before s2 even came out was “I Know” by Fiona Apple. To me it really captures Crowley’s patience and frustration waiting for Aziraphale to come around. The way the last “I know” just lingers unspoken gives me chills every time
I also love “Ready Now” by dodie as an Aziraphale song
OH and “All the Wasted Time” from Parade is so spot on for them it’s uncanny
I'd never heard "Ready Now", that's a really great song for Aziraphale! Fiona Apple is so talented. Thanks for these suggestions!
Wow, that's amazing!! The world can be a small place. Sounds like you are really in tune with C and A, even if you didn't know it. :)
@@Sendarya I see what you did there and I am HERE for it 😁
Let's go! I been waiting for new video 🎉
I don't usually make playlists for characters, but the song from Christina Perri: A Thousand Years seems to me like it was made for these two.
OOh, love this recommendation, beautiful heartbreaking song! I love her voice, and the lyrics were just...perfect!
Here’s also a few other songs that are very “ineffable husbands” coded and a bit obscure
“ Only A Fool” by Father John Misty (With POV from Crowley in mind) ( POV loves someone for seemingly all of human history, commenting on how several great human thinkers all wise for never taking the risk of letting themselves become hurt by love, but they themself are a fool, as even as they have been heartbroken by their love over and over through the years they continue to want their love)
“Furthest Star” by Dirt Poor Robins (POV Crowley) ( Alpha Centauri need I say more)
“Trouble” by Connie Converse ( POV Aziraphale) ( POV tentatively allowing themselves to become close and fond of some deemed a bad influence by all)
“You’re My World” by Anya Taylor-Joy ( It’s In the title )
“Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks” by The Brunettes (POV Crowley) (Again it’s in the title. Just two people pining while feeding ducks in a park in London. Also pov mentions their lover being stubborn and it driving them nuts as them having a “ disillusion halo”)
“Dinner At The Ritz” by City Boy ( POV Crowley) ( Secret long term relationship, rendez-vous and discrete dinners at the ritz. POV wants their thing to be official but knows this will likely never happen bc their lover won’t ever accept running away with them)
“A Rainy Night in Soho” by the Progues ( sweetly romantic for once, just two seemingly immortal beings reflecting on their life long companionship over their lives as it rains in Soho)
“Stardust” by Nat King Cole ( POV Aziraphale) ( I mean the lyrics mentions the “ stardust of a song” of nightingales in a garden, where he and his lover were together, as the melody attached to the memory of being in love and the bittersweet acceptance that the singer will never feel that kind of love again, but at least they had the privilege to know it briefly)
“She’s Always A Woman” by Billy Joel ( POV Crowley) ( Just. Ow. POV of singer adores a woman who keeps breaking his heart, but no matter what she does to hurt him he still can’t stop loving her. “that the Garden of Eden line, woah)
“Soho Square” by Kristy MacColl ( POV Crowley) (Also, Ouch, but at least it’s hopeful? Breakup song that talks about an empty park bench in Soho, pov is pissed and hurt at their ex but still adores them )
“Your Body, My Temple” by Will Wood ( More Crowley coded than this is near impossible, this is just about a demon being so so down bad with someone they denounce all other power that be to solely devote themselves to one person and protect them from God themself as both seem doomed by them. The beloved clearly doesn’t notice that this is more than platonic and again, pov is incredibly down bad in love but contents themselves with just being friends. Wooo)
“The End Of The World” by Skeeter Davis ( End of the world is equivalent of heartbreak)
“Two Thousand Years” ( this is just a beautiful song about love, hate and humanity.)
@@ctwofirst6635 We will see…
I am very grateful for this analysis !
Great song choice, of the Cure songs, that's the one I would also pick!
@@Sendaryathank you! I'm glad you agree :)
To me 'Fall Out Boy - Flu Game' is a must for a Crowley-centric playlist, I mean just look at these lines:
Last night I dreamt I still knew you
I carved out a place in this world for two
But it's empty without you
I've got all this love I've got to keep to myself
All this effort to make it look effortless
Confront all the pain like a gift under the tree
Oh please, I can't be who you need me to be[...]
They underline Crowley's helplessness and his struggle to understand where they went wrong in S2E6.
Beautifully fitting song, I'd never heard it before. Thank you!
Listen i will forever be a defender of the song Im a Mess. Its hilarious.
It is! And can we talk about the video? Great costumes, sets, and choreography. The humor in it is really brilliant.
I have a couple of songs that make me think of the plot and our Ineffable Husbands but they might not fit entirely. But listen to them and tell me what you think about them.
• Little Black Angel originally by Death in June but I like Ladytron's cover better.
• The Sparrows And The Nightingales by Wolfsheim
I have a lot of other songs but I feel they fit even less. 😅
Happy new year to you and your loved ones.
@@Sendarya I'm a sucker for 80's music and everything that has that kind of vibe, so glad you found them interesting!
There is so much to unpack from this playlist, and your interpretation! I like the idea of the 5 stages of grief and I think you're spot-on with The Book of Love and a couple others. Some of them I diverge, I had to really listen to them to be sure.
Here's my choices in that line of thought:
Denial
Crowley: Midnight Rain - Taylor Swift (I feel like this song fits with Crowley's constant surprise at Aziraphale's absolute blindness to how he had changed since his downward saunter and how he felt Aziraphale WANTED to see him vs. how he is).
Aziraphale: Just My Imagination - The Temptations (Aziraphale wanted it all, but he also thought the forbidden nature was a dealbreaker, he's never known how to reconcile this)
Anger
Crowley: Cry Me A River - Julie London (Spot on with your choice, the simmering fury in this song fits Crowley to a T)
Aziraphale: The Show Must Go On - Queen (As you stated, the story behind this song is magnificent and heartbreaking, and I think it fits Aziraphale's anger at a situation beyond his control, he puts on that fake smile at the end of season 2, that face he needs to cope with his agony. He'll do what's necessary in spite of overwhelming grief and opposition)
Bargaining
Crowley: Could've Been - H.E.R. (Crowley is H.E.R. in this, trying to bargain with the Aziraphale in his mind, explaining why he couldn't go with him, and the other voice is his own sub-conscious trying to fill in what he thinks Aziraphale would say: "You COULD have, you just chose not to.." )
Aziraphale: Heart And Soul - The Four Aces (This song is deceptively upbeat, but it also speaks of begging to be adored and gladly falling overboard - Aziraphale desperately wants to be with Crowley and he always has, I feel like this would be him trying to confess his hopes and dreams in a way to convince Crowley to change his mind - even though I also personally believe Aziraphale knew Crowley would say no and said the things he said to purposely drive him away)
Depression
Crowley: I'd Rather Go Blind - Etta James (to me.. Crowley's depression after all of this would take a more dismissive "I can't even look at you" path. He'd rather go blind than watch Aziraphale kowtow to Upstairs' playbook)
Aziraphale: In Dreams - Roy Orbison (This one was tough because it could go either way for both of them, but I think it just fits Aziraphale more in this case. Crowley MIGHT cry, but I think it would take more than this for him to admit to dreaming of Aziraphale and waking in tears, whereas the other way round I think Aziraphale would get up daily having to hid
Acceptance
Crowley: I'm A Mess - Bebe Rexha (I had a hard time placing this song, but I settled here because it's not HAPPY. It's pretending to be happy, pretending that the future is bright, that things are going to be okay. That's very Crowley and I think that's what he'd need to do to move forward)
Aziraphale: My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion (Perfection.
Plus Neil putting in his two (three?) cents adds that extra layer of "Wait what does THAT mean??"
Looking forward to more content and to season 3!
Thank you! And the same wishes to you and yours.
That one SOUNDS like the experience of having known and loved someone for a very long time
Isn't it interesting how sometimes a famous artist can cover a song and the original gets forgotten. Sad. :(
@@Sendarya Oh my gosh yes!
Regarding the songs - I instantly knew Book of Love had to be one of Neil's choices, partly because it's so gorgeous and a perfect blend, but also because it's unusual. (And probably not for nothing, it's such a great cover song, with a beautiful, soaring arrangement - and Neil's 'rearranged' and done a 'cover' of all of this biblical mythology, etc.)
Something I found interesting - I was watching the video of PG's live performance of Book of Love with the orchestra - and the very next song/video to play was also from that concert, and from the same album of cover songs (called Scratch My Back) - and it was The Power of Your Heart, which is a Lou Reed song. (Understand, I know very little about Velvet Underground, I only just realized through your vids that that's Neil's favorite band. But - given that this is what it is, and is on the same album, I thought it was interesting, especially since the lyrics talk about being very different people, seeing the world very differently, but 'flying around the world' to bring someone back and ask them to marry them.)
And now, just about the same dang thing just happened to me again - I literally *just* went to listen to the original version of Book of Love, since I'd never heard it and someone in the comments suggested it, and yeah - it's absolutely lovely.
Underneath the stars I'll meet you
Underneath the stars I'll greet you
There beneath the stars I'll leave you
Before you go of your own free will
Go gently
Underneath the stars you met me
Underneath the stars you left me
I wonder if the stars regret me
At least you'll go of your own free will
Go gently
Here beneath the stars I'm landing
And here beneath the stars not ending
Why on earth am I pretending?
I'm here again, the stars befriending
They come and go of their own free will
Go gently
Go gently
Underneath the stars you met me
And Underneath the stars you left me
I wonder if the stars regret me
I'm sure they'd like me if they only met me
They come and go of their own free will
Go gently
Go gently
Go gently

Anyway. None of this is important, I'm sure, I just found it all interesting, and finding new and perfect music recommendations is never a bad thing. 😄
AW, thank you so much!
Also, beautiful song.
I know Marvel already used it but It's Been a Long, Long Time (Henry James, Kitty Kallen) feels like a very "them" song to me
This is one of my favourite videos of yours ❤❤❤
Well, thank you!!
(with acknowledgments to Susan Cain) This is our longing that has hooked us😘
My playlist consists of songs C would give to A to communicate his feelings: the Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go cover by Soft Cell, Hold Me Now by the Thompson Twins, Come and Get Your Love by Redbone (very saucy) and Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel
(“Don't go trying some new fashion
Don't change the color of your hair, mhm-mmh
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care”)
With regard to S3 speculation, an old Stevie Wonder tune came to mind: Have a Talk With God.
Happy new year ❤
How did you read my mind XD I just saved the playlist to my library and was wondering if you would ever make a video on it! 😍
What a happy coincidence! 😊
Everybody wants to hear "Love of my life" in S3 (and I'm on board with that), but what do you think of "Let me in your heart again"?
YES THE BOOK OF LOVE OMG NEIL YOUD BETTER NOT BE YANKING OUR CHAIN (sorry for shouting)
It's ok, shout away! We all need to get these emotions out somehow!!
Also agreed! Neil loves ro troll his fans, but not like this. This would be cruel, not cute. I'm putting my faith in Terry and Neil!
So the version you’re talking about for the book of love is Peter Gabriel’s version, but it’s not his song it is Stephin Merritt song. it’s off the Magnetic Fields, 69 Love Songs, which I highly recommend.
I did check out the original, which is really cool. I only focused on the Peter Gabriel version, as that's specifically the version Neil chose.
In love with all your videos as always excellent job. Happy festivities ❤
Thank you! You too!
Almost certainly a total coincidence, but Heart and Soul appears in Lucifer - he and Chloe play it on the piano together the first time they open up to one another a little.
Hello Sendarya, seems like I‘m a little late to the party, but my playlist looks like this:
- Lovely (Billie Eilish, Khalid)
- Gilded Lily (Cults) „Haven‘t I given enough?“ as Crowley‘s inner monologue and „Always the fool with the slowest heart“ as a reference to Aziraphale being always very hesitant
- Fairytale (Alexander Rybak) „I‘m in love with a fairytale even though it hurts“ (Crowley); „I don‘t know what I was doing, when suddenly we fell apart (Aziraphale); „Nowadays, I cannot find her“ (Them being seperated); „But when I do, we‘ll get a brand new start“ (Them hopefully getting their Happy Ending)
- Pretty When You Cry (Lana Del Rey) „Don‘t say you need me when you leave and leave again“ as Crowley‘s answer to Aziraphale‘s „I need you“
- Two Birds (Regina Spektor) Aziraphale as the bird who won‘t let go of the wire aka Heaven and Crowley as the bird who tries to fly away aka seperate himself from Heaven and Hell and run away with Aziraphale
- Chasing Cars (Snow Patrol)
- Lost on You (LP) I actually saw this song mentioned in another comment, which made me very happy. I just think „Will you remember all the danger we came from?“, „I‘ll never get to Heaven, cause I don‘t know how“ and „Wishin‘ I could the machinations, understand the toil of expectations in your mind“ are too perfect
- Only Love Can Hurt Like This (Paloma Faith) The title explains it pretty much. A deadly, burning kiss is also mentioned
- Say Yes To Heaven (Lana Del Rey) I think this was/is pretty popular with the fandom. Many (myself included) just think the lyrics kinda sum up the breakup. „Say yes to Heaven“ for Aziraphale and „Say yes to me“ for Crowley
- Arcade (Duncan Laurence) „A broken heart is all that‘s left“ and „Loving you is a losing game“ maybe to how Crowley feels now
- A Thousand Years (Christina Perri) „I have loved you for a thousand years“ has never been more true than with these two
- Dynasty (MIIA) „Thought we built a dynasty that Heaven couldn‘t shake“ is funny, because it is actually Heaven, that „destroys“ it
- The Way I Loved You (Taylor Swift)
For me it feels like it‘s harder to find songs that sound like Aziraphale than to find songs that sound like Crowley. Idk why
Well, that was my playlist and this was a great video.
Some of my song choices are:
"White Flag" by Dido
"I Would Die 4 U" by Prince
"Down in a Hole" by Alice in Chains
"Love Me Again" by John Newman
"Angel Fire" and "Always, Forever and Now" by Tret Fure
Ah, the Prince song! A classic, love it. Great list. Also want to comment on that Alice in Chains song, I used to have that CD
Midnight Rain is definitely Crowley.
waiting for the devilish playlist
Me too!!
