Yes! A hand up. I went to College on the G.I bill. I graduated with honors and worked as a R.N for 30 years. The G.I bill invested in me. I paid taxes and helped and loved many.
It is. Especially when he sings it. Was a Vietnam era song; there's a video of soldiers carrying their "brothers", dead or alive, off the battlefield. I cry every time I hear it.

My older brother died in 1979 at the age of 35 from mesothelioma. This song was sung at his funeral. His family rallied around to help as much as humanly possible. I gifted my sister a ceramic statue of one boy carrying another on his back engraved, He ain't heavy, he's my brother for her two sons. Even after all these years, this song brings back memories of my brother who would have been 78 this year. He has been gone from us for 43 years now.🙏
As a Combat Vet this Song represents the way we feel for each other.. Color of Skin doesn't matter.. We all went through the same thing together filled with Death and Saddness
Harri, I believe the Hollies were one of the most underrated groups of the 60's & 70's. Songs like Pay you back with Interest, Bus Stop, their cover of the Coasters song Poison Ivy, and Look through any Window. Heavy on the vocals always. Cheers
In 1943 Boys Town adopted as its image and logo a picture of a boy carrying a younger boy on his back, captioned “He ain’t heavy, Father … he’s m’ brother!” They felt it epitomized the importance of their residents caring for each other and having someone care about them.
Loved the Hollies. Great memories in my young days. They were very respected and made many popular songs. This song by AC is so emotional . Never tire of listening to it.
Yes one of the best written songs ever that touches so many people and ofcourse a great band to boot I'm so happy I grew up with great music like this ❤
The drummer is Bobby Elliot one of the greatest technical drummers, ever. The singer is Allan Clarke and his vocals are just brilliant and boy could he play the harmonica. The Hollies made so many brilliant songs, too many to mention, even the Beatles were always interested in what they were up to and admitted their harmonies were better than there own.
This song was released when I was nine years old. My two brothers were eight and seven years old. That was the year that my dad left my mom for another woman, and we were thrust suddenly into, among other things, poverty. My mom was not a strong woman, diagnosed with sle (lupus) in '62, and mentally she had issues. So, it fell to me to take care of the boys. Many years down the road, the boys chose lives of crime and addiction, and I finally ran to Alaska. Today, the oldest of my brothers is gone, and the baby was recently released (again) from Federal prison. He has reached out to me, and even though I am 62 and he is about to turn 60, he is still my baby brother, and ya know what? He still ain't heavy. Indeed, it is a beautiful, moving song.
My brother has cancer and I have promised him to sing this at his memorial. Lord, give me strength! And I agree, this is one of the best songs ever written.
My brother had special needs and this came on the car radio just after he died and I was driving to work. I wasn’t worth tuppence by the time I arrived. Thank you for your reaction. ❤
In 1918 at Father Flanagan’s Home For Boys orphanage in Nebraska, a young resident Howard Loomis who had polio and wore braces had trouble walking, especially up and down the stairs. The older boys started carrying him on the stairs. One day Father Flanagan asked Reuben Granger if Howard was heavy, his reply ‘ he ain’t heavy father he’s my brother!

This song was taken from Father Flanigan who founded Boys Town Tony Hicks was looking for something new he found this in Denmark in a music publishing house it was first offered to Joe Cocker.Elton John known a Reg back in the day played piano on the original Hollies recording .
That is truly fascinating. When I was a boy in the early 80's I recall seeing the phrase "he ain't heavy, he's my brother" with a drawing of a boy carrying another on mail from Boys Town which my great aunt received because she supported them. Hello again , Debbie. "Bus Stop" is one of my top 5 favorite songs also! Harri needs to play it for all of us. Enoma reacted to it some time ago and loved it. Bring back the sixties!
When my grandson spends the night, I sing this song to him at bedtime. He always tells me to stop but his mom says he hums it at home at bedtime. 💙. Such an important song and sentiment. Every one of my kids and grandkids knows this song. It is our family anthem
The great Alan Clarke, who used to sing in three part harmony with Tony Hicks (on guitar and backing vocals in this video) and Graham Nash, who left the group before this record to form Crosby Stills & Nash. Clarke and Nash had been childhood friends from back in the 50s and the three of them did of course the great songs like Bus Stop, On A carousel, Carrie Anne and so many more...
"He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" is written on the base of a statue in Boy's Town. An older boy carrying his younger brother. Boy's town was established in 1917.
I was in the Army when this song came out and it was, and still is one of our favourite songs. We were all brothers in Arms and this song resonates with soldiers in many countries. We were trained not to leave anyone behind and we travelled many long, long roads together at at times we needed to carry a brother and he was never to heavy, and for some the road was a road of no return.
Allan Clarke had such a beautiful but powerful voice. I always get a bit emotional with this one. I love the essence and sentiment of this song - the world would be a much better place if we were just more helpful and empathetic to others. P.S. I've always thought that at this point in time Clarke (especially his hair) looks like the 1970s version of Foreigner lead singer Lou Gramm. P.S.S. Just love this. Hollies were awesome. The most emotional cover of this song was done live on stage with the ALL the Osmonds including Marie & their older hearing impaired brothers Signing to the song for their 50th Anniversary Reunion Concert. The Osmonds adopted the song as their signature song.
My mom used to play this long ago when we acted up and start singing with a fake mic, she was the best. Makes me miss her so much, truly a song forever in my heart.
The song is unfortunately a memory for me of four of my brothers that I've lost. I'm the youngest of six boys, in between two sisters. My oldest brother was 29 killed in a motorcycle accident in 1979 of course the song was played at his funeral. 8 years later two of my brothers were killed in a car accident in February 1987, again this song was played. The toll it took on my mother and father was unbearable. My father died in 1989. We had a reprieve for a while and then in 2011 my second oldest brother died in June, and again this song was played. I have one brother left, he's 10 years older than me, we don't have much in common but we do cherish this song!! It was his favorite song when it first came out we were pretty tight family and it was his idea that this song must be played, and I'm grateful for that. Being the youngest I looked up to every one of them, two of them went to Vietnam they both came back but unfortunately when I'm died in the car accident. And my one brother is still here he made it back from Vietnam. But he struggles, with the loss of his wife in 2015, and his oldest son to suicide in 2016, I can only be there for him, cuz he ain't heavy he's my brother!!!
One of the greatest pop/rock groups of all time. Notoriously underrated, yet sublime and masters of three part vocal harmonies matched only by The Bee Gees and the BeachBoys.
To me the song has a different meaning, although it didn't come out until the later years of the Vietnam war, whenever I hear this song I can remember my brothers from that place and the many times we carried each other , emotionally or physically.
Great reaction, Harri, but then by now we expect nothing less!! If you ever have the inclination, their song "The Air That I Breathe" is one of the most beautiful love songs of all time and well worth a listen! Keep up the great work, Harri!!
Always loved everything about this song. I did notice one wrong word. The line is "... that everyone's heart isn't filled with the gladness of love," and he sang "sadness" again, but that's how it is live, and he didn't miss a beat. Gorgeous song, and great reaction, as always. Thanks!
This was one of my many, many favorite songs of this era! I love your reactions to all these beautiful songs, Harri! Thank you for keeping them alive for younger generations to enjoy REAL music!
Nice job, Harri. Love The Hollies. Lead vocals are so strong. He makes one little slip in the lyrics of the bridge. It should be: "If I'm laden at all/ Then I'm laden with sadness/ That everyone's heart/ Isn't filled with the gladness/ Of love for one another...." He says "sadness" instead of "gladness." It happens. Just beautiful.
A drummer colleague once told me if you make a mistake do it twice like yiu meant it ;) I wonder how many kids got thru college from this song for the songwriter - ok more likely the publishing rights owners / well done mate - thanks for not interrupting the flow of the song
Love your reaction. And I agree with you. Just the phrase, "he ain't heavy he's my brother", has stuck with me my whole life. There is Godliness in it.
When I hear this song it reminds of the military motto, No Brother Left Behind. I have 2 grandson's that are Marine's and a granddaughter in law in the Marine's as well. My dad was Vietnam luckily, he came back to us, my husband is a retired Navy pilot, the video to this will show you what the song is about in my opinion anyway
You, in my opinion are right. We can go thru our own problems and are uplifted from someone who cares. It is our mission in life to serve and help others. YES, YES, YES !!!
I can tell, Mr HarriBest, that you are filled with the gladness of love for one another! I’m sure that everyone who knows you personally considers it a beautiful friendship!
My favorite version of this song was done by the Osmond Brothers. They’re family and their harmonies are beautiful. I believe this song was important to them because they had 2 brothers with disabilities.
There is such a person in my own life. Life has taken us physically apart, but when we connect now and then this song is roaring in my ears. My brother from another mother, my brother forever. God Bless you, my friend. 😪
Written in 1969 by Bobby Scott (music) and Bob Russell (lyrics), when Mr. Russell (1914-1970) was dying of lymphoma. Elton John was the session pianist for the Hollies' recording.
This is among the greatest inspiring songs ever written. But as The Hollies make their magic, a tip of the heart to one of the greatest singer songwriters in music history, Mr. Neil Diamond.
Many years ago (in the 70s) there was a disaster at Granville NSW Australia and a thick concrete bridge fell on a train crushing at least one carriage but then cars were also falling onto the carriages. As they played the footage they also played this song which had me in tears for hours. What also made me cry was the bravery of many who crawled into the train to hold the hands of and comfort the people who were trapped inside (something that they wouldn't allow you to do these days) and had I been there I would have done the same. I was only a teen back then. The love within humans back in those days was unbelievable.
One of the best songs of all time! Im 65 and Swimming 15 miles in 6 days for my Wounded Warrior brothers! I start my swim in the morning with this song in my heart!
The lyrics could be applied in very diverse circumstances, which causes all of us to be able to relate to them. Great composition and vocals, along with the right musical talent, make it a classic! Love your program, Harri!
I have this song on a usb stick in my car. I have loved it since it was released when I was 15. It chokes me up to this day whenever I hear it; and if there was ever an anthem to live by, this is it! ❤&✌my fellow humans
This song has such a great meaning for me as I played it constantly when my brother was in a coma following a severe brain injury. He pulled through and this song became my song for him ❤❤
I grew up with an older brother. He wasn't always the nicest guy in the world but he was there when I needed him. He saved me from drowning once. Of course he really was my brother but I'm sure the Hollies meant "brother" in its broader sense, including everyone.
One of the greatest renditions, the only one in my opinion', of this epic masterpiece, 'he's my brother', recorded by the hollies. Like I've said many times, ' it's impossible to define greatness'. This exceptional recording of 'He's my brother (he ain't heavy) by the hollies is the perfect example of what we all look for in the songs we love. The outstanding recording and the vocals done to perfection by Allen Clarke. Mesmerizing. It belongs in the music hall of fame, to be treasured forever.
Powerful is so correct. You get it. "He ain't heavy, he's my brother", he's no burden for him to help, he loves the he/she in the trials and tribulations we all find ourselves at times but our friend can always be depended on to help and vice versa I am sure.
This was from '69, at the height of the Vietnam War. For many of us at that time, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" also referred to brothers in battle. If you saw the "94 movie, "Forrest Gump" and remember the scene where Forrest carries wounded Lt Dan out of the jungle, that's what this song connects to in my mind.
Such a timeless message. So many want to push others down. It is so much better to offer a hand up. Such a powerful song. Great reaction Harri.
I would agree. But better a hand up than a hand out. Right?
Yes! A hand up. I went to College on the G.I bill. I graduated with honors and worked as a R.N for 30 years. The G.I bill invested in me. I paid taxes and helped and loved many.
Still give chills and goosebumps 50 years on. A timeless song for all decades and centuries.
Takes me right back to when it 1st came out. Never get tired of hearing it. What a time it was......
@@theresagallagher9161 So true. Wish we could turn back the clock to those days.
A timeless reminder of why we are on the planet-to ease the burden of others. 😊

Agree. Every song you mentioned is a classic.
But this is their best by far
This song crosses so many boundaries (genres of music) purely because of the lyrics

Take that soul music and put it your heart .
Such a feel good great song. And right after listening to it, we flip the finger at someone on the highway. Humans.
I have this song on a usb stick in my car. I have loved it since it was released when I was 15. It chokes me up to this day whenever I hear it; and if there was ever an anthem to live by, this is it!
❤&✌my fellow humans
I absolutely love this song.
I agree this is one of the best songs ever written, and performed. Thanks for doing it.Have a great day.
It is an amazing meaningful song and worthy of the standing ovation. Great pick Dean.
I totally agree, the greatest song ever written.
Agreed, it's a song that never fails to move me. I always appreciate your quiet, sincere, insightful and honest responses to the music.
Thanks!
Just love your reaction, this brings back such sweet memories
One of the greatest renditions, the only one in my opinion', of this epic masterpiece, 'he's my brother', recorded by the hollies. Like I've said many times, ' it's impossible to define greatness'. This exceptional recording of
'He's my brother (he ain't heavy) by the hollies is the perfect example of what we all look for in the songs we love. The outstanding recording and the vocals done to perfection by Allen Clarke. Mesmerizing.
It belongs in the music hall of fame, to be treasured forever.
It's melancholic, the harmonica, perfect for this touching, beautiful song. Another great review Harri ♥ ☺.
Another one that will make you feel the same way is ,It's A man's man's man's world with Pavarotti and james Brown. Awesome
I agree its one of the best songs ever written.
Powerful is so correct. You get it. "He ain't heavy, he's my brother", he's no burden for him to help, he loves the he/she in the trials and tribulations we all find ourselves at times but our friend can always be depended on to help and vice versa I am sure.
Superb request Dean. One of my favorite of many Hollies classics. 👍🔥😉
That song made that man ICONIC.
