The first opera I ever heard was La traviatta with Maria.Ever since I am a slave to her. There is noone ever to compare with her. This voice, this divina, was a gift of God to us.
My grandma had the pleasure of seeing Callas live several times back in the 50's when she was a young lady. Once, when we were talking about these events, she said something like: On stage, Callas was much more than just a singer taking the role, in fact, she WAS Violetta with every bit of her body and soul. She also said, it is not possible to describe her stage presence with words, it's something you had to see for yourself..
i salute all the people here who rose in defense of callas and her reputation as an artist. some of the comments really touched me because they were so sincere and heart-felt. so many people here with a deep knowledge and appreciation of music extolled her brilliance. thank you all of you. you give me reason to have faith in human nature. i dont understand why people who dislike callas bother watch her videos... they must be sad, small minded and pitiful creatures. i hope they get a life.
I pity people who have the audacity to blatantly comment on Callas' signing and understanding of the roles. She is the best Violetta ever and the way she's dived into the depth and layers of her character and was able to present it so well both musically and theatrically is beyond comparison to any other singer I believe. Yes ther are other great Violettas but no one as moving, emotive and human as Callas. She makes Opera human something that other "great" singers lack sometimes. No hate but I feel a little disappointed when people dont understand the nuances she worked on and blindly compare her to other singers for no reason. Calling her the best doesn't other singers aren't but it needs to be noticed, especially with Violetta she has an edge over other singers. It can never be re-created the way she did it.
I wish I had met her. She looks like she was a very kind person. In my opinion, the most beautiful woman who ever lived was even more beautiful than Liz Taylor. Maria was beautiful inside and out. Love Love Love Love with all my heart♥️
she was Violetta in her sacrifices and Tosca in her bravery and madama butterfly in her love . she didn't sang the roles, she lived them in all there tragedy
Khalid Al-Thani Very true. I remember listening to a recording of her Norma, I cried when I heard Deh non volerli vittime because I truly believed the emotions of a woman going to her death and begging for the lives of her children.
Just a few words to describe María Callas: Original, Unique , Fantastic, and make us cry when she sings " Teneste la promessa...and....then Addio del Passato ".. What real Violetta she was, is and will be forever.."
Maria Callas always original, unique and magnifique..Nice job putting this video clip together. Lovely, great and wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Caballe said she was " small " compared to Callas. Sutherland heard Callas sing live, and said she would never sing that aria again, as Callas was perfect.
+Dan J -------What was that aria , do you know? Another thought Dan ----we are lucky living in an age with our technology where we can listen to these famous artists anytime we wish.
Which aria? Sutherland sang "Sempre Libera" many times, well into the 80's, and beautifully (her live recoding from the Met in 1970 has never been surpassed). It's Callas who supposedly said she'd never sing Lucia again after hearing Sutherland in rehearsal for it. Bottom line: They were both great artists.
Interesting. Caballe was a great, but relatively lazy, artist. She had only a "sort of" trill for the most part and took on many parts that she only barely had the voice to do. However, I saw her as Violetta early in her careen and was astounded. When the party scene opened it was hard to believe that this chubby lady was the most desired courtesan in Paris. After only a few bars of music her size became irrelevant and she was incredible in the part. I do not think the "equal of Callas" because I do not think that is ever possible but she made me want her to be happy even when I knew she would not be in the end and what more can you ask of any Violetta.
@@Eiswirth1 I know. Don't you love how they make up this shit up? It's very easy for the greatest singer in the world to humbly declare that a declining mess is the greatest singer in the world and smile sweetly. Sutherland never heard anybody sing anything and decide not to sing it. She did not sing a few things after she was unhappy with herself. Queen of the Night being one, which is not really a test of anything but the ability to beep a high note. If only Callas had been as aware of the limitations of her own voice, or Renata Scotto.
@SilverCircle71 somebody - i dont know who - did describe her performance of violetta - he said that when she did the final scene when violetta dies, callas did so with her eyes open - she did not close her eyelids, but she WITHDREW THE SPARK OF LIFE FROM HER EYES! also it is said that in 'tosca', that she nearly stabbed the baritone tito gobbi - she didnt notice that the blade of the dagger hadn't retracted! when she played a part she WAS that part. she was unique and unparalelled.
Thank you for posting this! I ADORE this opera, it is so moving, every scene is filled with genuine human emotion. And of course, LA DIVINA sings here! Other Violettas I absolutely ADORE are the two glorious Romanian divas, Virginia Zeani and Angela Gheorghiu.
Let's all bow down and softly worhship this only true divina (DIVA) a Greek force of nature. My God, Maria, how we love you so. Onassis was such a fool. You will continue, harsh but innocent soul, through eternity. Breath deep, and listen.
There are so many other similar youtube videos with Callas singing La Traviata, if you don't like the narrator, you can move on. Personally, I appreciate the explanations. And I also think she is unique and the greatest.
Maria Callas. Great No point in comparing any soprano with one another. Silly!!! They all have greatness. Tastes make a difference. Ridiculous to make comparisons, Oh God!!!
I totally agree that pictures of Maria would have made this video much more poignant and dramatic, maybe the poster did not take time to look up photo's of Callas but her voice with the exception of Renata Tebaldi was the greatest of all-time. Callas was just awesome beyond words. "4****" would have give a 5 had pictures of Callas been used.
@vivelhistoire The voice is Callas and the first 9 photos are of Callas, but that is not her in the apartment scenes or in the country garden scenes toward the end of this clip.
Coooool - I just discovered that some of the scenes in the anime "Memories" was based on this performance. - at 1:43 in this video and at 4:39 you will see the same gazebo and scene with her in the room in the red dress -- the same scenes are in the Magnetic Rose part of "Memories." It's truly amazing. And you can thank Google's cartoon today for piquing my curiosity enough that I found this UA-cam video. :) The link is below, if you want to learn more about "Memories: Magnetic Rose." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memories_(1995_film)#Magnetic_rose_2
@oladman there are several dvds of her interviews. there is a movie on her life (with the extra frills of a side story) done by franco zeferelli called 'callas' . however, if you want to know callas, you have to listen to her voice. her artistic persona was who she was in the truest sense. her 'life' - meaning her biography doesn't really reveal her true self - her soul. only her voice and her music does that. cheers.
Bonanplu, Toscaninni considered Callas a genius and the greatest voice. He was heterosexual, and a genius as well. Leonard Bernstein considered her the greatest singing actress, and voice of the century. He was a genius and gay. Both men were great men, and artists, and knew more of music and voice than your aficienado posing self will ever. You shrivel, shrink, and recoil in the midst of such beauty, truth, perfection, and love that Maria gave us. Her work defends itself.
Gustavo, I agree with you . The Southerland was a pure coloratura soprano, while Maria was a dramatic coloratura. But diferencencia is that Callas was a complete artist a mixture of airborne everything. The Southerland had tuning problems and live concerts are testing them. was also cold and unemotional. So lacked seasoning. Maria was unique and match it will be very difficult
@alexgomez2 I picked up on you saying that Sutherland had a superior vocal technique - that was what I was getting upset about, not the rest of your comments, which I do understand and agree with. I was just in a bad mood and picked up that part of your comment. Apologies for my swearing, it really wasnt necessary. Im not normally rude and I normally like commenting with overseas people. I saw Callas sing Violetta at Covent Garden in 1958 and agree with your grandmother 100%. Callas was Violetta.
@@annettelawson5788 did you watch callas live again other than this la traviata london 1958 performance?
She was a fabulous actress and vocal perfection. She understood that these larger than life characters must be played with every fiber of your being.
