One of my favorite C64 games! I always landed as far to the right as possible, since enemy bombers can't reach there. As long as a few pixels of your wing touch the airstrip you're golden, no matter if the rest of your plane is on grass.
thank you sooo much for posting this. it was my favorite game as a kid .. Hearing the sounds and watching this even brings back smells from my childhood home and sparked a whole lot of fond memories i thought i had lost forever. the brain works in mysterious ways. Thank you again
If you want to play it again, it will run under emulation on any computer, even a phone. Funny that I have ZERO interest in ever playing these again. I look at the 1980's now in the same way I looked at the 1950's back then. Remarkable how far we've come in terms of technology. The computer screen I'm using right now, has higher resolution than a movie theater did, and my computer that I'm using can simulate every very game machine I ever played up until 2000 while simultaneously playing a film. It's crazy how far we've come.
@@richardwicks4190 We've seen how this type of amusement started. First Console was from Palladium (or was it Colleco?) back in '77 with Pong as the only game.^^ Today I'm still amazed about every single step in this industry. Greetings from Germany
I played this game for HOURS back in the 80s on my dad's C64.. I could never remember the name of it till looking through a 200-game UA-cam video compilation. Now I know and will probably remember it.
One of my favorite games. I never knew it had levels. It was always random how quickly I got to the city at the end. Also was the only game my dad would play... Ever. Now that's something
This was epic. I love how you would sometimes get into big city levels with lots of buildings. They always felt like I discovered something secret. And the feeling of accomplishment when you managed to land with lots of damage, just wow...
This game and Zaxxon is the reason i play with inverted camera controls to this day. I played this in the mid-80s with my friends in Germany, without instructions - we figured out how to take off and drop bombs easily enough, but we wondered what the big letters meant. P-LANE and L-ANDING were fairly obvious, but W? It never occurred to us to fly low and hit ground targets with the machine gun! I am surprised that it has an ending. Thanks for the recording!
that's really good. I never went straight from level 1 to level 3. i always went to level 2 to destroy the enemy bases. I guess you have to shoot down several enemy planes in the first level to get the the final level.
At the intro, press F1 changes "Copyright 1983 Synapse Software" or "Copyright 1983 Synsoft" to "Music composed and conducted my Stephen C. Biggs" or "Music programmed by Stephen C. Biggs"
I remember that there were unallocated sectors on the game disk that read something like: "What are you doing in my code? You're up to no good and you're a thief!" Those were fun times when the game on disk wasn't supposed to be disassembled and studied. (At least that's what the game publisher thought.)
Cant believe the game was only 5 minutes long... haha... How many times I played this... I got to the city with the white building ONCE! :) A true classic game. Wasnt there even a Blue Max 2000 game? With firghter jets?
I believe it has to do with the amount of points scored after each sortie. I think you need at least 2500 points in each sortie to go to the enemy base or city scenario. I'm not sure if you also need another 2500 after the city before landing the plane to finish the game.
Destroying buildings, bridges, ships and planes, especially when they are flashing will get you quickly to the next scenery. You also want to fly at a low altitude and just shoot tanks for some easy points if you don't mind getting hit more easily of course.
There is a special easter egg replacing Copyright 1983 Synapse Software with Music composed and conducted by Stephen C, Briggs. Press F1, F3, F5 or F7 if one of those work.
That game should be recreated in Playstation 3; Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. It should be called Blue Max World War 1. That could be something different.
Great playing here. C64 vers seems to be more forgiving about colliding with the ground than the A8 version. Also propeller sound is better (but muffled), but the explsions and gun fire are very weak. This also a good version to play.
A friend of mine had a C128 and every time I came to his house I wanted to play this game but ofcourse he did not want to play it grrrr. I feel like playing it now.
@Sharptooth100 Why it should be something different? It was a product of it's time, I don't think anybody who didn't grew up with these games can possible understand the charm they still have.
Looking for a game similar to this one. Any ideas? Platform: Commodore 64 Estimated year of release: Very late 80s Opening music of the game is space odyssey theme. You are controlling a plane and start shooting some chopters first. Then you land on the ground and start shooting tanks coming at you, sliding right and left. Then you fly again and start shooting jet planes that are faster than chopters in the first stage. Finally, you shoot other black planes that come behind you and you can see them before they come from your rear mirror.
A lot of games back then, especially those that focused on War (WW2 especially) were automatically banned in Germany. Even Commando which was actually based on the Vietnam war was banned in Germany, so they changed the sprites to aliens. LOL
When I see this game I think of Wang Chungs "Dance Hall Days".. and when I listen to Dance Hall Days I think of this game... Must have come out at the same time lol
I remember my brother having a fastload cartridge. You could literally list the files on disk and simply add a '%' to the line with the file you wanted to load and it would save you from having to type out the full syntax.
That wouldn't actually work since ",1" tells the C64 to load the program into the memory address denoted by the first two bytes of data. "$" is the directory which takes the form of a BASIC program, so you wouldn't be able to LIST it. ;)
Good ol' days - meaning flying bi-planes or playing the video game? ;P Kidding. Yes, those were good times. I had my Apple II which didn't have Blue Max at that time so I went over to my friend's place to play this on his C64 :)

Exactly
Me too. Loved it.
Hard to believe its been thirty four years since I first played "Blue Max". Seems like just yesterday.
I’d give anything to play it again❤ my Commodore 64 got ruined in a leaky shed roof 10 years ago😢

I still have this on my original c64. All these years later my trusty tape still works. Love this game as a kid!
One of my favorite games. I never knew it had levels. It was always random how quickly I got to the city at the end. Also was the only game my dad would play... Ever. Now that's something
Oh man this brings back great memories. I used to fly thru under the bridge, that was quite a challenge!

I was 12 13 Age, but now iam 50 years old i will never forget this game was LEGEND
Oh how much i hated when i was refuling and a another plane drop bomb on me
See too!
*refueling not refuling
That never happened if I just landed on the right hand side of the runway.
Leuk dat oude werk!
I can confirm that if you land on the right side of the runway this never happens to you.
Beach head, Blue Max, Raid over Moscow, Spy Hunter, any Microprose game... God I miss the 80s
One of the first games I ever remember playing but it took FOREVER to load the cassettes for it.
Thanks for posting, haven't thought of this game in over 30 years

Loved this game
Such a great classic game! Enjoyed watching this! Had to play it myself immediately! :-)
oh man. Look at this I remember playing it :D good ol times
Great game. Another one I put hours into was Falcon Patrol.
This game was incredible! So seamless and fluid
This is the first i ever saw of a C64... i got one from my parents for christmas 2 weeks later and i was hooked
At 0:10 what a pleasure to see this screen when I had no loading errors !!! My favorite C64 game
lol, long play = 5 minute. excellent skills!
Long play doesn't mean a long video, it just means playing a game in it's entirety
Excellent! Well Done, DerSchmu!
I got to the final stage as a kid over 30 years ago, but I never made it. Finally I see the finish!!! :)
Blue Max Eternal Classic!
One of the memorable games I used to play back when I was younger. I was never particularly good at it.
i never worked out how to take off in this game when i was a kid!
I managed to take off a couple of times but there were far more cases of me blowing up on the runway
that's really good. I never went straight from level 1 to level 3. i always went to level 2 to destroy the enemy bases. I guess you have to shoot down several enemy planes in the first level to get the the final level.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
This was and still is a quality game.
HOLY F***ING CHRIST!
I literally spent days playing this game when I was younger.
THANK YOU for uploading!
Ah, memories. But no flying under the bridges. That was a huge bonus :)...

I'd say they expected it, since they left that message.
@@mjt1517 The game was "Blue Max" for the c64, I suspect that the programmer left it there and the publisher was unaware of it.
Well played. I remember this game as being pretty hard.
My friend told me that you could crash-land somewhere and start playing as an agent...
Stupid me.. ;(
I think I've heard this too. Maybe it's true!
C64. When both "longplays" and "speedruns" took about 5 minutes. Fuck yeah, those were the days! :D
I used to love this game as a kid!
One of my biggest favourites!
What he did in 5 minutes, I had been trying to achieve for 2 years since I bought the blasted thing!
Many of these long play videos have been made with emulators that have quick save + quick load.
I have loved and love this incredible game
Brings back memories.
this was the first game I ever played, but I couldn't remember the title, now I found it, thanks :)
That's a long time ago. I had completely forgotten this one. I used to love the way the buildings "explode"... I has only six, ok!

Wow, years of not being able to complete it and ... whoop. lol.
Still, ace (no pun intended!) game and it holds many memories :)
This was one of my favourite games!!
I have played this on and on...how this game ends?does anyone knows?
A friend of mine had a C128 and every time I came to his house I wanted to play this game but ofcourse he did not want to play it grrrr. I feel like playing it now.
Dude, you rock!!!
Never got past the first airport lol. This game was too hard for me as a kid.

Oh man, I found myself pulling the joystick back and pushing the button everytime you dropped a bomb...
Hello fellow old head gamers! Been a while eh? Its hard to explain loading this game with a cassette to the youngsters.
do you have bump n jump? where all the season change! that game was awesome and great music
It was fun playing this game and if you got hit near the fuel tank the level dropped so quick
Landing on empty was a challenge to
Awesome game
Best Game Ever!!!!!! Simply Brilliant : )
I played this game a lot but never understood howto land a plane :(
Ein schweres Game. So weit bin ich nie gekommen.
It's incredible this game was banned ...
+Buniakra Games what? it was?

played this for a whole day and got a blue max!
wait i was pretty sure landing did NOT remove letters at all.
Brill game..I was playing this about 2 weeks ago on my c64
This and Choplifter were the best!
This game looks too difficult for me, so i loaded it and then noped out pretty quick.
This, Sammy Lightfoot, and Bruce Lee.
I heard that....good days!
When I see this game I think of Wang Chungs "Dance Hall Days".. and when I listen to Dance Hall Days I think of this game... Must have come out at the same time lol
my all time fave.....
any recommendations of what type of joystick to use with the CCS64 emulator?
Great game.
3:24 Annoying how they try to refuel you before repairing the fuel tank, only to have to refuel you again 🤦🏼♂
LOAD "$",8,1 :)

@Shaun McKee Yup, or you could do an uppercase L instead of "load". So:
L "*",8,1
Figured that one out as a kid. :-)

God of playing...
Are you going to do Blue Max 2001?
The sounds are actually quite good (except the bomb drop)
I never got higher rank than blue max class 3, i do not know why.
Yea, Blue Max, Fort Apocalypse and Jumpman where the bomb!
How?? Your so good
Top ace! o7
I remember that everytime i was landing, the game was freezed :-(
*frozen
freezed is not a word

i used to fly under the bridge!!!
Same! I used to think I was the king of gaming when I did this!
LOL! 5 minutes! And we complain about current games being 4-5 hours!
I Liked this game. hated the most when refuling, There was a chance you to get bombed
