I was more a fan of the Rode than the Deity. Question back at you... the Rode VideoMic NTG can be used as a standalone USB mic (plugged directly into your laptop via USB cable). Does the Deity offer the same functionality?
I have both. They sound almost identical, really hard to tell, and very close to my MKH 416 (!!). Really good job from both Rode and Deity, thanks for bringing such a good sound quality for this price! One important thing that wasn't mentioned in this review, the Deity can be connected to a balanced XLR which is very important to get a better sound when using an external recorder or a pro camera. And also the D3 Pro location kit comes with the XLR adapter and a second handheld-type Rycote shock mount, I got mine in sale on Amazon for $249 which is a lot more value than the Rode for the same price. If I had to pick just one, I would go with the D3 location kit : same high quality sound, more value/accessories, and pro features/XLR, (and Rode copied them).
I think a key point for the Rhode mic is that it can be used as a USB-C microphone into the computer and dedicated as one. I think it's a far better option than Deity's with having to plug it into the a mic jack of a laptop. The auto turn-on and off feature for Rhode is pretty quick. I've been using the Rhode NTG and although I don't need it, it does allow a headphone jack for monitoring audio for cameras that may not have that jack. I also keep on the dual channel recording incase audio does peak randomly. It gives me a nice safety net to choose in post.
@Daniel Paulson Yup, I've watched a few videos by Drew. Will try to find the related video. I just might save and splurge on the NTG. Because the difference in price which I'm paying for it vs the Deity Pro is an extra 20% only.
I went with the Deity as it was reviewed well and budget was definitely a factor, the case is a plus too, along with battery life. It sounds great so far (I’m still a novice in audio recording).
They both sound really good!! Rode also has a really cool feature where you can record separate audio levels on the left and right channels. Which is perfect for when a loud noise happens or something clips, the right channel will be -20 of the left channel. Meaning you can bring back the clipped audio! Awesome video!!
The Rode is a bit bassy and the deity is clearer in the higher frequencies. I’d prefer go with the higher clarity and then add bass in post production. So whenever God blesses me with the finances I’ll buy the Deity.
Thank you for this video.. I’m trying to get better sound on my channel and watched several videos before finding yours and it really helped me along my journey 🙏🏼💯
Yeah, that is a massive advantage- thats what swung it for me as I wasn't intending to spend so much on a video mic, but I'm glad I did and the NTG works great as a USB podcast or voiceover mic, and even suspended overhead for Zoom calls.

I bought the rode ntg a few weeks ago it's my first microphone it took me a little bit to figure it out but it's amazing the difference on an old camera 😀
It is really nice that most of the new cameras coming out don't create much internal static so boosting the sound natively form the mic isn't as big a deal any more. Old cameras and cheap cameras will still have this problem. What mic are you guys using. RODE VIDEO MIC PRO here.
What I think is really crazy is that deity FORCED Rodes have to make something better. They were basically resting on their laurels Deity came out swinging and they had to respond. I have the V-Mic (not pro) and I've basically abandoned Rode after bring ride or die for Years!
Are you plugging your Deity into your phone at all? We've had issues with frequency interference but the clarity of audio in the Deity is absolutely stellar!
@@AlextheLue yes sir. Edit: i use it with my M50 when I'm trying to work super light weight. But typically I plug it into a Zoom H1 then go into my camera, but yeah, it works great, I love it.
Hey! I have the video micro right now. And I'm looking at this NTG to replace it. So it sounds like we are similar. What made you want to switch? I'm having the hardest time getting the micro to sound good for my voice overs.
Just a quick note you can also use rode ntg on your computer with its usb c to record on pc. And also to live stream. You can also plug your headphones on the side of the microphone to monitor your audio.
👍 I tried the shotgun mic but didn’t like it as I would never be able to move around. So I got a wireless mic and will never look back 🤙 Great video though!
Perspective Caribbean that’s a good little mic imo the best bang for your buck. I have both of them I boom the the pro and the other one stays on top my camera. Sound quality isn’t that much different your only losing some features. Just something to know so you don’t rush the upgrade. 🤟🏻
If I have the Deity D3 Pro connected directly to the camera, will it turn off when I turn the camera off, and then turn on when I turn the camera back on? (without me pushing any buttons?)
The Rode is a better mic for outdoor use. I had both mic and the deity cannot handle wind even with a deadcat on but the rode on the otherhard is far superior when it comes to wind.
Great review. I like the Deity Better. Sounds overall more clear and detailed. Has more battery life, a beautiful case and not protruding on the back when mounted on the camera. Its more clear on the high frequencies than the Rode, without having to move any button.
Hey 🖐🏾 Omar great video I just purchase the Deity D3 Pro, because of your review been following Think Media for a while now, I trust your reviews.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Hi! So, I’m a complete sound-rookie and was hoping you could help me understand the real differences between XLR and 3.5mm microphones. From what I’ve been able to learn, the basic differences are: 1. XLR cables are balanced and a safer way to do long connections without having interferences; and 2. XLR mics need phantom power to work. But other than that, do XLR microphones output better sound quality compared to a good 3.5mm microphone? If the only real advance of XLR only comes with their cables… Wouldn't it be better to use a 3.5mm microphone (which tends to be more versatile, like the Rode Video NTG) and use and 3.5mm-to-XLR converter when you need to do a long connection to continue using the more trusted XLR cables?
I got the Rode Pro Plus for me is great and battery charger is during 7 hours continue.also I will be using AA Battery too. great for vlogs and travel too,
Rode VideoMic NTG comes with a 10 year warranty once you register it I preferred the NTG for a few reasons, ultimately for the color of the sound, very well balanced but still crisp and versatile Make sure that you update the firmware on the NTG after purchase to assure the latest version running Rode TOTALLY copied the Deity D3 Pro, without a doubt, I would have liked a nice storage bag! Don't forget to buy the Rode WS11 Dead Cat way awesome against wind! Thank you
It's absurd, very superficial and false to say that Rode copied Deity. Many people are claiming that the Rode NTG video mic copied the Deity D3 without having done any previous research whilst ignoring crucial and very obvious differences between the Rode and the Deity. It's a very sad thing. Interference tubes are the main characteristic of shotgun mics.Actually, it's what differentiate them from other mics. The Rode " employs acoustic perforations along the length of the microphone in place of the linear slots found in other shotguns and on-camera microphones. " That was new technology at the time and the clear difference between their interference tubes alone makes the design of the Rode VERY different to the design of the Deity which uses the traditional slits on their interference tube. Yet , people keep saying that Rode copied Deity !!!! Nobody using the Rode is reporting radio frequency interference but many people using the Deity are picking up interference. It's a rather curious phenomenon: Rode TOTALLY "copied' the Deity but it doesn't have interference issues. Some copy. I was shooting news with the Rode NTG 4 on the top of my camera when Deity did not even exist. How can people say that Rode copied features such as filter and boost seeing that Rode mics already had those features when Deity didn't even exist!!!!! In addition, the Rode has a safety track which is not present in the Deity. And the gain control knob? Did Rode copied that too? No , they didn't . The Rode NT 2000, not a shotgun, already had similar knobs six or seven years before the launching of the mic company called Deity in April 2018. The physical appearance of those mics WITH a foam is similar all right but all shotguns look the same. A layman won't tell one from another. The only difference they will notice is the length of the shotgun and if it has a blimp/deadcat or not. The shock mount is the same? So what? It has been manufactured by Rycote, not Deity. And they are not the same. Rode's shock mount is better .It's longer, it has a cable organiser , it's stronger and uses metal screws on the mount adapter whilst Deity's screws are made of plastic. Rode chose to use a shock mount from a leading manufacturer just like Deity did. If that is copying then Panasonic copied Sony when they designed their first P2 broadcast card based camera because their camera used the same Anton Bauer batteries that the Sony Betacam SX tape based camera, for example, used. They are completely different cameras but the use of exactly the same battery shows that Panasonic was "unethical" and "copied" Sony. That is, if someone follows the very flawed , very superficial logic of people who are saying that Rode's on camera mic copied Deity's mic. The Rode is near 20 mm shorter than the Deity but it's a little heavier. Rode uses straight cable whilst Deity uses a coiled cable. One last and very important difference: The Rode can work as a USB mic, the Deity can't. I don't have the Rode Mic NTG. I have a Rode NTG 4, a Neumann KMR 82 i mt and a Mackie EM 98 MS. But I think it's safe to assume that I could use the Rode usb output to connect it to an iPhone with a usb to lighting adapter. This way I could use the mini jack output on the Rode as headphone port, and it's absolutely essential that shotgun mics have a headphone port if I am to use them with an iPhone. Both Rode and Deity neglect iPhone users but claim that their on camera shotgun mics and wireless kits are compatible with iPhones. P.S. Incidentally, I am no Rode enthusiast. I've recently replaced my Rode news shooter kit with the Deity Connect Interview kit . I've got the Deity just this last Christmas so didn't have enough experience with it to see how it will perform in real life situations but so far I am happier with the Deity that I ever was with the Rode because the Deity uses built in batteries, it has far more configurations than the Rode, and it does have. a protective case. I won't take the case with me in a shooting but I think protective cases are visiting cards where the manufacturer is saying "I care about you and your equipment".
@@starryeyed6073 It sounds like it clips when it’s not, and certain words sound muffled. I’m doing a warranty replacement though, so hopefully it’s just my unit because I haven’t seen other complaints about this.
THINK MEDIA! You guys were there for me since day one, and I hit 2K subs in less than a year with you guys. The canon m50 was my first camera because of you guys too! I bought this mic a few days ago because of this video too, but the Rode Videomic NTG's safety track feature is not working well at all with the canon m50. Is it because I need the SC3 adapter, to take the trrs connection and convert it to trs?
@@switchunboxing I considered doing that, but decided i'd just end up buying the NTG later, so I saved (HA!) myself $60 by going large in the first place. I had wondered if I would need a Videomicro when shooting with my smartphone, but I don't think that is the case, as the NTG is light and short enough for it not to matter when you stick the phone in a cheap cage.
Hey awsm vdo ❤️. I needed a mic for a tech channel (talking head vdo) I have 3 choices Deity d3 - 120 usd Deity d3 pro -220 usd Rode ntg - 335 usd ( Prices in my country) Camera - sony a6400 with sigma 16mm Which mic should I go with ?
I have he Deity D3 (not the Pro) and for $99 it's great, just doesn't have the adjustable gain. I may upgrade to the Pro in the future but for now the D3 meets my needs
I bought the Deity d3 pro and the trs audio extension cord recommended but I cannot get the mic to work with the extension cord plugged in. Any idea what I'm doing wrong. The short curly trrs cord that came with the mic works when plugged straight into my camera but when I add the extension cord the audio no longer works. I purchased both the 3.5mm trs and trrs cords with no success. Any advice someone can give me would be much appreciated. I really want to boom my mic but can't without an extension cord.
I just got mine today but can not get it to work. Trying to use is with a new canon SL3. Could it be the Jack has three rings and I need two? Am I supposed to charge it via usb on my laptop first? I had it powered through my computer. In playback loud buzzing can hear audio.
Which mic did you get? > Am I supposed to charge it via usb on my laptop first? I had it powered through my computer. In playback loud buzzing can hear audio. I would charge it up before you use it- For the NTG, 2 hours of charging gives 30 hours of use. When the USB is plugged in, it is a USB mic and the 3.5mm jack becomes a headphone socket. Try without the USB. > Could it be the Jack has three rings and I need two? The Rode has a smart cable which detects whether you are going to a smartphone (TRRS) or a Camera plug (TRS) and adapts accordingly > Trying to use is with a new canon SL3 I have an SL3, but haven't tried the NTG with it yet (too many other options to play with over the last few days since it arrived)
The RODE feature where it has the -20 Db is super useful for me who will be using it to record in instances where there will be loud fans cheering and yelling.
Yeah I’m just not a fan of Rode Mics for some reason. Their definitely good don’t get me wrong but I love the Diety V-mic Pro. The sound is very clear and better overall to me. Let’s be honest the added features on the Rode is because D3 had been out killing the market so Rode had to counter that imo. Anyway great video always loving what you guys are doing.
Ive been intrested so much on this channel since 2 months like that ..... I would like to have a vedio from you guys how we can connect every parts of such of lights, microphone, and cam and other things. ...can i have a vedio on that
Guys i think we would love to see a tad bit more smartphone videography Where we see about backdrops, lighting, audio etc because dslr needs a lot less light compared to smartphone AND audio is different in different gadgets
I am super disappointed of the ride go. When you try to record indoors it picks all the wifi signals producing a harsh sound almost impossible to remove in por edit.
Still having a nightmare of a time with the VideoMic NTG crackling and fizzling and muffling sounds like words "out". The mic sucks for $250 and I'm getting closer to trying the Deity.
Hey Mate, I just bought d3 pro + location kit. My camera is sony a6400. I got huge problem. basically, d3 pro wont work with a6400. turn on mic, turn on camera, mic wont turn green light, no sound at all. Unplug camera, plug into a iphone 6 with 3.5mm jack, mic turn green, sound okay, plug into rode wirelss go transmitter, d3 pro turn green, at receiver end, there is sound. finally, plug a power bank via usb c cable, then it works with sony a6400, unplug usb-c, it turns back to sleep mode, amber fade out mode. I did not find compatible device via deity website, do I need a trrs2trs cable? can you please help whats wrong.
A useful video would be one that tells you WHEN to use a shotgun mic vs. lapel mic vs. other mics. This caused me some trouble when I started (and wasted money).
Shotgun mic for when someone's mouth is going to stay in pretty much the same place and that place is within an arm's reach or so from the mic. Lav mic for when the person is either moving around or further away. If you are the length of a car away from the person who is speaking oh, they need a lav mic. If you're filming a cooking show. The person who is cooking either needs a lav mic because they are moving around. Or you need a sound person who is operating a boom with a shotgun mic just above the frame of the video and following the cook around.

I laughed out loud when you said “lenses”😂😂 that’s phenomenal hahaha thank you for not taking that out🔥

I would personally opt for the Rode VideoMic NTG.
It's been kinda crap so far
@@switchunboxing how so?
@@starryeyed6073 It sounds like it clips when it’s not, and certain words sound muffled. I’m doing a warranty replacement though, so hopefully it’s just my unit because I haven’t seen other complaints about this.
@@switchunboxing thank you
I like the NTG sound. The D3 has an unpleasant edginess to it, which is pleasantly removed when you switch mics
Really been thinking about investing in a microphone for my videos. I think my sound quality is good now but could be better.
Rode VideoMicro is a good place to start at $60
@@switchunboxing I considered doing that, but decided i'd just end up buying the NTG later, so I saved (HA!) myself $60 by going large in the first place.
I had wondered if I would need a Videomicro when shooting with my smartphone, but I don't think that is the case, as the NTG is light and short enough for it not to matter when you stick the phone in a cheap cage.
I move around alot and appreciate you saying I should get a wireless setup.
Will this get rid of my autofocus sound?? When I record with my camera I can hear it auto focusing on the video and it is annoying
I think you failed to mention the safety track on the Rode mic.
Also true, and a great feature (it means the Rode sends two mic channels, with one channel at -20dB, as a safety measure)
Hey awsm vdo ❤️. I needed a mic for a tech channel (talking head vdo)
I have 3 choices
Deity d3 - 120 usd
Deity d3 pro -220 usd
Rode ntg - 335 usd
( Prices in my country)
Camera - sony a6400 with sigma 16mm
Which mic should I go with ?
Just bought Deity D3. My next video is gonna be with it.
awesome review . thank you!
"A sound judgment". Nicely done :)
Congratulations for 1M subs. You guys are amazing and i learned a lot with this channel. please keep it up. wish you all the best again ❤️👏🏻😃
0:40 "sound judgment". Awesome.
😂😂😂
Thank you Omar from Japan 🇯🇵
I also live In Japan!! Wherebouts?
@@AONIXO
Near Kobe .
The Rode definitely had cleaner audio with less reverb
Bmoore6 yes 👍🏻
We have the new IDOLCAM VlogStar V2 shotgun microphone, can we send you one for the next mic review you are doing?
I really want to boom my mic but can't without an extension cord.
would the rode NTG3 be better
If you have bmpcc4k you don't really need safety channel feature. It can be set in camera.
yoooo dat color grade on the talking head shot is soooo amazing, do you guys have luts?
Congratulations for 1M subscribers.
Any small youtubers out there lets grow together this 2020.
The Rode has a smart cable which detects whether you are going to a smartphone (TRRS) or a Camera plug (TRS) and adapts accordingly
> Trying to use is with a new canon SL3
I have an SL3, but haven't tried the NTG with it yet (too many other options to play with over the last few days since it arrived)
Your video good, like 5👍❤️🙏🌹
Can you do a video on audio options without audio output? I have the a5100.
Thanks Omar!
Just got the deity d3 pro! Review on my channel coming up
This video really helped!
Which mic is best for music purposes ?
Ive been intrested so much on this channel since 2 months like that .....
I would like to have a vedio from you guys how we can connect every parts of such of lights, microphone, and cam and other things. ...can i have a vedio on that
I bought the diety a few months before the NTG came out. I wish I had the NTG for the -20db and the ability to plug it into my camera.
The "best mic" doesn't mean anything if you don't use it right.
Do you know if either of these work with an H1 Zoom?
Guys i think we would love to see a tad bit more smartphone videography
Where we see about backdrops, lighting, audio etc because dslr needs a lot less light compared to smartphone AND audio is different in different gadgets
How do you get rid of the echo that i hear thats coming from you being in an open room ?
Black spray paint for the Rode. Just a thought.
I'll let the team know, great idea!
