Just for you to know more about me, I live in Portugal - Europe, I am 53 years old and drumming is a childhood dream!!!! Because of life issues I started to play drums for about 8 years only. Never too late to start!!! I play in a band where we play 60/70 rock, pop, blues covers like Beatles, Queen, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, Cream, Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zepellin, Doors, BB King, etc. Where I live in my town in Portugal-Europe I don't have music schools to help me in my drumming. About five years ago in a town near where I live, I had private drum lessons for about 2 years with a Dutch teacher called Koen van Esch. Great teacher by the way!!! After that I check for vídeos on youtube. Your vídeo is kind of a "blessing" because I started to play quite a few Led Zeppelin songs with my band and it is really challenging for me to play some of those songs!!!! Everything is ok so far, except for one song - GOOD TIMES BAD TIMES. I still can't play those ffffuuucccc... fast double sixteen triplets with the bass drum. I fake it with the floor tom and play only one note with the bass drum, kind of R-Cymbal-FT-BD triplet, "a la" Bonham triplets!!!!I think your vídeo is going to help me on this issue. Do you have any adicional suggestion of how I should practice this to be able to play these triplets? Thanks!!! (JR-PORTUGAL)

José Rodrigues that’s great, I’m glad you are getting something out of the videos. My only advice is to start slow and gradually build up your speed, there’s no shortcut for that. It’s just building up your muscle memory. Good luck!

Really appreciate your answer!!! It's a huge help especially in my situation by having someone to help me in my drumming problems!!!! As you say I'll keep practicing until it happens and I will let you know when it happens!!!! Meanwhile I'll keep looking for other vídeos of yours to improve my drumming. Thanks again for your advice!!!! (JR-PORTUGAL)

Seriously amazing foot technique. I think felt beaters are crucial. Wood doesn't bounce as well

I'm not convinced by this technique and have achieved the same effect by hovering my foot over the pedal and just using my ankle with my heel up and off the pedal. Admittedly, I do sit a lot higher up, but I have got insanely fast patterns, backbeats and ghost notes down with a single kick pedal without even thinking about it. Yes, the (wood) beater does come back and hit the top of my foot sometimes, but I just put some cardboard wrapped in duct tape down behind my laces. Otherwise I would have crippled myself long ago!I guess that's just my way.
Thanks for the show though!P.S. I used to sit very high all the time, but now I have a hydraulic throne I can whiz it up in a second if I want to get flash on the kick for a particular song.

Grammar police here: i think you mean famous, unless you're referring to all other drummers being driven crazy trying to duplicate the master.

A question that I've been looking the answer for a while regarding this:
Does your left foot play the hi-hat heel up or heel down?
When I try to play this hard groove, my instinct says heel up, but the reality says heel down due to balance issues.
Would love an answer to this. Thank you for posting this video!

    • @peacefulbliss1

I have the same issues with balance. Some of the other videos I see shows people playing both heel up.

Ya know what bonham was thinking when he did this? I'm pretty sure it was, im gonna toss in some doubles on the kick and keep the top end going. I'm pretty sure he wasn't as philosophical as all these youtube videos describing his playing. This fucking guy was partying, recording, touring and not giving a shit about slides, heel up/down/sideways. The best way to play this is whatever way you personally use to get it done. Nice Polska T Btw.
