    Having done a few long journeys on XC Voyagers, I admire you for doing this journey. While I have nothing but praise for the train crews, I’m not a fan of the trains. There’s never enough luggage space, they’re always crowded, the loos smell & they’re now looking a bit tired. The train crews deserve better. They work so hard to look after you.
    As a Fifer, I’m obliged to point out it’s the Kingdom of Fife! 😂
    Also, Lucy, my cat enjoyed the video too! 😸

    I once went from Edinburgh to Penzance using a £56 rail/sail ticket from Belfast. Not wanting to do the journey on a Cross-country, the ticket allows to go via Edinburgh, and then via London. Using Seatfrog, I managed to go 1st class and back for about £160. I'd do it again, but from Belfast proper next time 🙂

    Did this journey 2 days ago all the way to Penzance and it arrived spot on time. Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the journey, smooth train, great staff and wonderful scenery. At more than 13 hours it's not for the faint hearted as your backside complains by the Midlands but it was well worth it for the sheer fun of such a journey. I would consider it again but perhaps not for a wee while. I got first class at £62 which was around 12 pence per mile so superb value.

    Virgin used to have them audio entertainment systems - wish they still worked! I looked at the reliability of this service a while back and noticed the train tends to terminate at Plymouth more than Penzance 😂 seems to have gotten better now tho!

    Last week I flew into Heathrow and my connecting flight back home was from Glasgow, so I had to do 4.5 hours on train from Euston to Glasgow. Not a bad ride, quiet and a good selection of food and snacks from the cafe.

    Hello Jessica, thanks for reviewing this epic train journey. In case some of your intrepid followers want to sample XC in the near future then it's worth noting that XC is revising its timetable between August 10 and November 9 owing to driver training. Details in the railway press. In particular the Edinburgh-Aberdeen section will be suspended during this time.

    • @TravelSoGood
      @TravelSoGood  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes, I considered mentioning this in the video, but when I looked at the online journey planners, it looked like it was still running the full distance but only on occasional weeks? Eg w/c 12th August it's running, but w/c 19th August it isn't.
      Of course there's a chance the journey planners are wrong, but I was just acting on the info I had to hand

    1V60 0820 Aberdeen to Penzance was cancelled between Aberdeen and Edinburgh "due to an issue with the train crew" today (9 Aug) and yesterday (8 Aug). On Wednesday 7 Aug it ran all the way and was on time leaving Aberdeen and arriving at Penzance.

    As a regular on this train, most times from York down it’s standing room only, I’ve been in first when they have had to let people stand in the aisle, also not unusual not to have service for big chunks, have done Newcastle to Leeds without anything, including water offered. Also see again way to often not going up beyond Edinburgh or South of Plymouth, needs more carriages and 1st class. Side note where’s your jacket from? It’s very cute.

    The main reason not to fly is the number of seats available on the aircraft, combined with the lack of available seats at the lowest quoted price and the not every day nature of the flights. On the other hand, going LNER/GWR via London is quicker, more reliable and cheaper than X-Country. You did well to get to Plymouth.

    Hi, if I may I have a question I attempted to Google in preparation for a solo trip in December because I like to be assured -
    Do you need, when you're given a seat number, to board only the car with the seat, or can you just get in at the nearest door (especially at a stop where it gives you all of 20 seconds to get on/off so it feels) and just walk to the right carriage?
    Does it depend on the train?
    Off-topic, I remember a plane my parents and I took from Lapland having spent a week there in the early 2000's and they had multiple TVs showing multiple things and one of those headphone things. You're right that we've not seen it since but we've had personal portable entertainment for twenty-odd years I think.
    Next question, What's the music you had playing when you left Aberdeen station, that very nice guitar?

    • @TravelSoGood
      @TravelSoGood  4 місяці тому +1

      In most cases, you can board at any carriage and walk through. However, be aware that some trains will actually be two or sometimes three trains attached together with no way to walk between them, so try to make sure you at least board the correct portion of the train. But even if you have a seat reservation, you can sit anywhere that is unreserved, so even if you are in the wrong section, it won't matter too much. And most companies will have a carriage that is completely unreserved
      As for the music, its all library music from Epidemic Sound

    This whole journey is why people don't like Cross-country, it's not the train model itself (although it's about 20 years overdue an upgrade), it's the overall service they provide. Never enough coaches provided therefore leading to overcrowding, unreliability of arriving at the destination on time or even at all, you aren't even given access to any lounges shared between different train operators, not one Cross-country lounge I've heard of in the UK, not to mention it's still seriously expensive!

    • @TravelSoGood
      @TravelSoGood  4 місяці тому +3

      I did consider using the ScotRail lounge at Aberdeen. I had a river ticket so was entitled to use it. But I felt that would be cheating! I wanted the experience that someone who bought a ticket would have got.

  • @Mounhas

    Amazing video, do you reckon doing Scot Rail to Edinburgh then LUMO to Kings Cross and finally GWR from Paddington to Penzance is cheaper?

    • @TravelSoGood
      @TravelSoGood  4 місяці тому +2

      Possibly! I do know that it's actually 11 minutes quicker to get off this train at Haymarket, get Avanti to Birmingham then XC and GWR to Penzance. Which is weird, but it's 4 trains instead of just 1, so not as convenient 🤷‍♀️

    Unfortunately, since you made this video, CrossCountry has "temporarily suspended" it's services to Aberdeen to strengthen services south of Edinburgh to 10 coaches more often, so the Aberdeen to Penzance train is now Edinburgh to Penzance.
    XC are also refurbishing their entire fleet soon, although sadly that isn't including any menu changes - Still, it is a really unique service, and I'd love to take on the challenge one day, really good video :)

And for those who use this train for necessity it's also not travelling during working hours that way so less lost time for them as they can use it at night instead.
