TransPennine Express Has a Brand New Menu. Is it Any Good?
I travelled with TransPennine Express on their West Coast route from Edinburgh to Manchester in First Class and tried their brand new food offering, called West Coast Kitchen. This failed franchise was moved into government control in May 2023 after years of cancellations and customer dissatisfaction. In this review of their Nova 2 (aka Class 397) trains, I'll give my option on the new complimentary food and drink, the seat and most importantly, I'll judge if the extra cost is worth it over travelling in standard class. Will the new offering help revive this troubled operator?
This is the second in a series of videos where I'll be reviewing EVERY First Class train in the UK on their longest routes. Watch the full playlist below and subscribe so you don't miss each episode as it drops.

I took 5 flights in a row with Ryanair over 24 hours, flying all over Europe. Starting from one of the very first flights on the day in Riga, Latvia, I'll fly to Oslo Sandefjord airport, then onwards to Zagreb, Milan Bergamo, Tenerife South and finally Liverpool John Lennon Airport - at least that was the plan! If I miss a flight for any reason, I will need to book myself onto the next availabl...

Just found your channel through this video being suggested! One occasion where I'm glad of algorithms ahah!
Algorithms do know what they're doing sometimes! Glad to have you here :)
Just been on a 14 hour sleeper train from Chișinău to Bucharest and no food service at all. Good job I was pre-warned and brought my own. Mind you it was a lot cheaper at around £11.00 for the journey!
Looks tasty!
It was :)
Great vid Jessica, and the new menu sounds delish! Had a bag of crisps last time, will have try this new stuff out 😀
So good! I just wish I had the sausage roll too. But during the edit, I discovered that the pie stand in Carlisle station is the same one that supplies the First Class, so I may have to find them next time I'm up north :)
I need that stew
It's lush :)
Great video never tried lner azuma before but it seems very good for a video request I think you should try avanti class 390 and a transport for wales dvt and class 67 they are really nice
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. And I have done both Avanti and TfW in First Class - they'll be released on the channel in the coming weeks so stay tuned for those :)
@@TravelSoGood will do
What do you think of TransPennine's new First Class Menu? Is it enough to entice you back?
Yes i would. They have improved lot's i like what i am seeing. Brilliant video as always 😃
The only issue for me (Sheffield to Manchester) with transpennine express is the volume of cancellations, and first class is like 4 seats.
Yeah... I should really review the other two routes/train types too and see how they compare!
I want to travel to York by train from Kings Cross and watching your video has been very helpful. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I just wondered if you paid for each of these journeys separately or did you get a 1st Class all over the country railrover?
Good question. I had a 14 day 1st class rover ticket which is how I was able to afford 4 separate journeys LNER journeys! Plus it gave me flexibility to change my plans around disruption, which during my filming period happened twice when the West Coast mainline was closed near Carlisle! First due to flooding and another due to a freight train derailment
I love traveling by train when possible and I live in America where train service leaves a lot to be desired. You see so much more of the country. That trip did look enjoyable. Calories consumed on trips don't count, right? 😉
🤣 free calories are free calories!
Loved the way you were eating that celery. Laughed a lot hehe
🤦♀️
Great video, I tend to use seat frog to upgrade, which whilst you get good prices I find the seat you have reserved will still say bookable when you get on. But looks like good service and selection of food and drinks
The food is pretty good! I was sooo full when I got to Inverness
I love your hair!
Thanks! It was freshly cut at the start of the series. This was day 9 of filming so just wait till you see a video from days 1 or 2 - it's gonna look even better!
Seat frog for the win on LNER. Another great idea for a series of videos
Thanks! I've never used seat frog but it's definitely something to consider
Worth it for some companies more than others
I always get peckish watching these. Always nice to watch <3
Haha! I'm always guided by my belly :)
@@TravelSoGood Also, please don't be offended but I do associate you with tea.
🤣🤣🤣 Why would a Brit be offended at that! But spoiler alert, after this series you'll probably associate me with wine instead 🥴
@@TravelSoGood I kinda already do, tea is just at the forefront <3
What do you think of LNER? Would you travel First Class with them?
Loved as usual, fun, factual but actually understanding what travellers want
how do you fund you travels
It's all self-funded. My work is pretty well-paid so I'm lucky that have money to spend (or at least I used to... work has been thin on the ground this year 😭)
@@TravelSoGood what is your work?
I work in TV - mostly factual programmes/documentaries etc - as a Production Manager
The emptiest Ryanair flight I've ever been on was a morning flight on April 21st, 2010 from KRK to NRN. It was the second flight operating out of Kraków that day, and we weren't even sure until 10 in the morning whether it would fly or not. There was me and 6 other people on it, and the crew got really upset when I wanted to take pictures 😂
Very entertaining as usual! Also get in there - me face made it in one of your vids! 🥳😂
Totally. 10/10 on entertainment, 0/10 on common sense 😆 - but that may have been the point 🤣
Haha! It was a weird coincidence that you dropped that video just as I was filming this, and I knew I'd be making that exact same trip as my next video on the channel. Oops... I've shared too much *wink wink*
I'm still unsure on the why for this madness.
No shit. From my home airport I've got the choice between Ryanair and Wizzair, and the latter is just about better on every metric. next Friday I'm off to Madrid for a Pokemon Go event with a friend, and I'm already dreading the flight there; 3.5 hours on a Ryanair 738. Not that Wizzair is *much* better, they're still a cheap carrier; they just don't make "f*ck the passenger" their business model. If I need to be somewhere and it's possible to avoid Ryanair without causing a lot of extra stress, I absolutely do so.
Believe me, I'm still not sure why I did it...
@11:10 - frot-swaf ;-)
utter madness but good viewing. ive avoided ryanair and queasy jet when ever i could for various reasons.
🤣
Puppies and Waterfalls very enjoyable - keep posting his adventures. Thank you
Love your puppy, and the work you are doing with him💜💜💜
Thanks!
Wrong decision to leave each other - from both sides, that is an absolute no imo. You could try again another day on your own, but you don’t leave someone on the mountain. Fair play for making it to the top,but it would have been sweeter if you’d escorted your wife back down and tried again the next day.
What a fantastic marathon
I'm glad you enjoyed it! How many sittings did you watch it in? 🤣
@@TravelSoGood just the one
👏 I applaud you, sir
Good effort, what's 7 minutes between friends? next adventure please
🤣🤣🤣
I have absolutely loved your little series of travel vlogs thank you for giving me some ideas for future travel
Glad you like them!
An absolutely brilliant series, very well produced! I've only ever thought about doing something like this on a rover, but you actually went did it, seems like something GLovesTrains or JenOnTheMove would do, though you've taken this to a whole new scale. Maybe we'll see a second round in the future!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the series! I had a number of inspirations for this, those included. But I had to find my own unique twist on it, which is why I introduced AI. I'll definitely be doing series 2 at some point - not sure when though!
Lovely video and congratulations on your first Business Class. A little advice, the Club Lounge in the main terminal is much much better than in B, especially if you have a little extra time. You can always go there first and leave an extra 10 minutes early to B in case you do it again. Good luck and cheers!
Thanks for watching! We actually went to the main terminal North lounge but they refused us entry because it was busy and directed us to the B gate lounge instead. However, we did go to the North lounge in a future video and tbh, I thought the B gates lounge was better and definitely much quieter - at least at the time we flew anyway. But of course we're all allowed our own opinions :) ua-cam.com/video/-8Ttro1hCF0/v-deo.html
@@TravelSoGood Yes that is an issue with the North lounge getting too busy. It would be better is BA would better manage that lounge. Regardless, congratulations.
Great video. Found your channel today and loving the content - shame about the employee towards the end there. If someone had shouted at my wife like that I would have some choice words for them in return. Looking forward to watching more of your videos though
Thanks for subscribing, Tom! I was rather exhausted after the run to bother arguing back, lol! But tbh, she was very pleasant for the rest of the journey, just clearly annoyed at the time, lol!
Aw puppies!
I went on my only all over the country rail-rover journey about 50 years ago when I was 17. I was with 2 very trusting friends as they allowed me to plan the route. We didn't book accommodation but slept on night trains ... I did take them to some out of the way places such as Yeovil and Scunthorpe. At the latter I still remember the ticket inspectors reaction when we showed our rovers "what the bloody hell are you doing here?" But actually I thought Scunthorpe was quite a nice place and have been back a couple of times since. Thanks for the memories.
I've never been to Scunthorpe, but I've heard it's ...interesting... shall we say? I'm glad you enjoyed the series!
Are you carrying on with the series
I hope to come back with series 2 later this year and make it even better than before. In the mean time, I'll be making other videos so keep an eye out for those :)
are you married?
Yes. We've been together for 13+ years and married for a little over 11 years ❤️
Mrs Butterworth is not fake maple. It is golden syrup
I love this whole like concept!! Sort of like a geowizard type of like adventure video, and just the like idea for it is really unique, I think I've found my new channel to watch when I'm eating dinner 😭
Thank you! It's great to have you here. I hope you enjoy the whole series :)
I am from Cumberland and agree they are the best British Sausage. Very high meat content and coarser texture. The real ones from Cumbria should be peppery but not TOO peppery. Some of the cheaper supermarket varieties are way too peppery. Thanks for voting it the best!
This is my town! I’m fairly sure me and my dad were in the car near where the model railway when you were there!! The community waffle house is all of the upstairs! Highly recommend! They do so much for our community!!
Haha! That's so cool. I wish I'd more time to explore but I arrived rather late and had to leave early. Next time....
Just looked up the Jurassic Coast - it looks stunning! Might go visit there myself now 😂. Lovely ending to the series!
I wish I could have gone there... but I had a time limit!
Drax is a cutie! The waffle house is above the bric-a-brac looking shop, you get to it through a shared entrance. I would say you missed out on waffles, but then you'd have missed out on the food at the George instead. Really enjoyed watching the series!
George's food was delicious! But I ate far too much 🤭
Do not recommend at all
Nope!
Love the videos! 🎉
Thanks!!!
They say its always quicker by tran!
🤔 Not sure if intentional or typo, but I laughed!
@@TravelSoGood it was intentional 😄
The Battle of Hasting occurred at Battle (on the road sign behind you)
I never knew that! But it makes sense
Love the church tower tour, never heard of Rye Town before, excellent video 😊
It's a great little town. You should go there some time :)
ChatGPT could be a bit more considerate with the order. Perhaps it's testing to see how far it can push you? Yo-yo up and down GB 🙂🙃
🤣🤣🤣 That's the whole fun of it. Wouldn't it be hilarious if it took me all the way back to Scotland!
@@TravelSoGood Especially if it then sent you back to the village next to Fishguard 🙂
In a few months you'll discover that ChatGPT doesn't actually incorporate any AI. It's actually just three thirteen year old boys messing about in their bedrooms when they're supposed to be doing their homework.
