    Crintina is a joy to listen to. She does not have to explain from a position of defense or prosecution of a practice. Just hard studied facts.

    I enjoyed this discussion. And learned things that are interesting. Thanks! In my faith, based on the 2BC, John Taylor set apart men to secretly continue plural marriage before he died in 1887. But after these original men passed away the practice was corrupted. I am not convinced this means the men that Lorin Woolley claimed John Taylor set apart. It makes sense to me it would have been Stake presidents. And they acted in connection with Presidents Woodruff and Snow and JF Smith who as we know continued to authorize plural marriages in Mexico and even other places. Lorin and many other Mormons in that generation must have known or at least heard rumors about these men that had been set apart to continue plural marriage.

    I forgot to ask, where is the quote that the wives needed are 7,5, and 3 for their respective glories?

    Was Amazing, but yes many friends I have which lives the fundamentalist, some of them actually watch the General conference, but are independent Fundamentalist, I understood are diferent to, regulars fundamentalist but is what I saw.

      That's an interesting observation. It would make sense that independents pay attention to general conference when those in groups might ignore GC.

    I can't help but think that the Church's behavior under President Grant in forcibly cracking down on polygamy with the threat of law and the subsequent raids played a significant role in creating the kind of environment of secrecy and obscurity that proved itself rife for abuse by unscrupulous actors like the Jeffs family...
    It really makes me sad to see all of the tragedies that have pervaded the fundamentalist community for so many years.

      While the Church did try to isolate this group, Warren Jeffs weaponized it. Other groups didn't act like Warren.

      @@GospelTangents Yes, that's very true. I have a good deal of respect for the majority of fundamentalists who aren't controlled by terrible leaders like Warren. Thank you for this excellent episode, by the way!

    Near the 20 minute mark Cristina briefly mentions “home altars” being commonplace in the late 1800s church. Along with prayer circles. What does she mean by home altars? For home sacrament?

      @GospelTangents  Місяць тому

      prayer circles were common into the 1970s-80s I believe. Usually there is an altar at the center of the prayer circle. Now these are only done in temples, but it wasn't always that way. I wouldn't be surprised if some in their church have home altars, but I don't know.
