The live version is unbelievable. I have never heard a better demonstration of Paul's voice at it's peak than the live version on Wings over America. The recorded one you just listened to isn't as good.
You NEED to watch the Wings Over America Live version from 1976 (the video one with the performance). It is night and day better. In that version he has so much rasp and it really adds to the song. It's seriously a different song.
McCartney has always been able to soak in the music of the places he goes. McCartney did a lot of recording in New Orleans at the time this recording was made. One of the more obscure songs he did in New Orleans called My Carnival. It sounds just like you're walking down a street in New Orleans.
Dereck, fantastic reaction You are in a introduction of Paul McCartney world the most versatily songwriter in the rock & pop music history this is an amazing song is unbelieve that Paul sings with this crazy voice in a recording studio but is Paul, an Icon! this is the great album "Venus and Mars" just in the middle of a trilogy between "Band on the run" & "At the speed of sound" the best of Paul & Wings You have a lot to react all are masterpieces but if I want to suggest one from these three albums I vote for the begining of these album "Venus & Mars" + "Rock show" both songs in sequence (as He begins a Tour too) It's amazing and You enjoy this I wish you a great week and hope for your ABBA too my best regards from Argentina
Paul McCartney has always been willing to take chances, do what the hell he wants, rather than "kow tow" to one genre of music, or the critics. Your analysis on spot on, but to me, no surprise. This is just an R and B song he wrote on the SAME album that contains Listen to What the Man Says [Venus and Mars], which was the big hit in 1975 that the classic rock critics absolutely hate. He set the bar higher for his inventive bass playing that no one was doing on rock and pop records until he came along. Let alone he was a member of the Beatles who broke down the door for everyone else that followed. He has written film scores and "classical orchestra pieces. Today he is the richest musician/ writer in the world, last I saw he is worth 1.2 billion. Has has 79 Grammy nominations and 18 wins. How many critics and star wanna bees, and other bands over the decades have accomplished all that? This song is merely a temporary exercise in fun to him at age 33 in 1975. You can analyze this to death but you cannot catch McCartney, ever. He never stops, never gives up. That is why critics often hunt him down and others with limited musical taste rather than variety dismiss him as childish pop music. well, the joke is on them, they are idiots living in a musical box of limited organized noise. i like reactors as they become more open minded about all styles of music. They have hardly touched jazz and classical yet. They are stuck in A-B-A song form. This year McCartney is 79 and still writing new stuff, and playing. He doesn't care whether people like it or not. He shouldn't have to. He's a genius.
It is so nice to hear another generation really appreciating this music and more generations to come. It's also nice to hear someone else go bananas besides me when I hear just how awesome this song is and the way he arranged it and sang it. How this song can still be. Pulling its weight and power now and for generations to come
Thanks Dereck. Grateful for your excellent review. So far you have done Back Seat of My Car, Let Me Roll It, 1985, and this. You loved them all. Will he continue to impress you? I think so.
this is the magic of mc cartney .........he can sing and play so different style of music......... try "mamunia" or " bluebird" from "band on the run" album , his masterpiece
You should check out "House of Wax" from Memory almost Full 2007 Another side of McCartney again in a very different type of song. Paul is not really known as a lead guitarist but this song really shows some of his talent as a guitarist
8:44 or when then mike ceased to record.. and Dereck was forced to switch to the camera audio (very low quality with lots of echoes/reverb) in post-prod to save the video.
Wow, so few views on this one. The wings is a great band, but in the shadow of the Beatles separation. Two I love from them, they were on the same single: Mull of Kintyre, and Girl's School .
Wings Over America live version is even better than this! He brought the brass on tour with him on that tour. Denny Laine and Linda are the two others in Wings as the remainders of the band varied by album. 1975 or so.
The Beatles, individually or as a group, were never a one trick pony. They embraced every genre, every style. Nothing was ever done twice. Not to mention, McCartney vocally, had an insane range, and sang in every voice and style possible. Much love! ✌🏼
your “new Orléans vibe” comment was exactly spot on, as he went recording over there for the album (Venus and Mars) which included this song .
You should react to the Wings Over America live version! It’s an incredible live performance from Paul and Wings!
I agree. The live version is THE version in my opinion.

You are in a introduction of
Paul McCartney world
the most versatily songwriter in the rock & pop music history
this is an amazing song

but is Paul, an Icon!
this is the great album
"Venus and Mars"
just in the middle of a trilogy
between "Band on the run"
& "At the speed of sound"
the best of Paul & Wings
You have a lot to react
all are masterpieces
but if I want to suggest one
from these three albums
I vote for the begining of these album
"Venus & Mars" + "Rock show"
both songs in sequence
(as He begins a Tour too)
It's amazing and You enjoy this
I wish you a great week
and hope for your ABBA too
my best regards from Argentina
You have great taste
I also like back to the egg.
So many wings songs that I KNOW you will be blown away by, it's so awesome seeing someone really feeling the music
This was practically a call back to "Oh Darling" from Abbey Road.

Please React to music video "Goodnight Tonight" by Paul McCartney & Wings.
Yes that's exactly what I was going to say. One of their best song! (I don't remember if "Live or let die" was from them of from McCartney only) :)
Thanks Dereck. Grateful for your excellent review. So far you have done Back Seat of My Car, Let Me Roll It, 1985, and this. You loved them all. Will he continue to impress you? I think so.
Wow, I had completely forgotten this song was in his catalog. Had it in my collection back in the day. Brilliant!
One of my favourite Paul’s live performances, thank you.

Another side of McCartney again in a very different type of song.
Paul is not really known as a lead guitarist but this song really shows some of his talent as a guitarist
Paul mccartney has infinite styles
Check Paul's Mull of Kyntire, Coming Up, Live and Let die
The wings over America versions of wings songs are so much better than the studio versions i recommend those instead.
New Orleans vibes is about right, that's where he recorded it 😁
Denny Laine is often overlooked for his contribution to Wings. Check out Mull of Kintyre or Juniors Farm
8:44 or when then mike ceased to record.. and Dereck was forced to switch to the camera audio (very low quality with lots of echoes/reverb) in post-prod to save the video.

The problem of the Wings was Linda McCartney. Having the boss' wife in the band ruins the intimacy and camaraderie of any band.
Indeed, you can't dirty jokes anymore, no more scoring on groupies... If you take too much, I'll have a sermon....
OOOOoooh Girl's schoool...
Hi Dereck,do you react Dream World from Abba in the future? Please!Thank you!
Have you done Linda Rondstat?
Dereck have you reacted to Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U music video? If not, you really need to please! 🙏🏽
Wings Over America live version is even better than this! He brought the brass on tour with him on that tour. Denny Laine and Linda are the two others in Wings as the remainders of the band varied by album. 1975 or so.
It is a shame your viewers don't give Paul more respect.
Live version is 1000% better
Another dull McCartney song
No just a dull you.
Another dull comment

Booboo. He used synthesizers in the days of yore. Not full orchestra.
