I also just read this story and was immediately in a book slump. It was so great. The abuse was very hard to read about, but their love transcending every possible timeline was so beautiful.
K, I read the story. Have to admit I would not have stuck through the first 25%+ if it weren’t for your strong recommendation. I really had to grit my teeth and power through that first, really, third of the story until I got through to the part where it was like a flower blooming, very slowly, as the story started to draw me in and captivate me. But, really, that first third of the story was like all of the heart-shredding (actually worse) of manacled without a morsel of sweet anywhere to keep you going forward. It was just hard. I imagine a story with angst/hurt/pain/suffering/sorrow, etc., for me has to be like E.T. (movie) with the trail of reese’s pieces-if there’s not a little sweet bit to pick up here and there, or at least the hope/promise/anticipation of one dangling, then I probably won’t keep going. Once I made it through the hard part, I was/am happy that I did, as the story fulfillment was . . . [can’t think of what word I want here, no one word encapsulates my thoughts/feelings but let’s just say it is a positive word]. Random string of thoughts: One of the things I liked was that the story was very unpredictable-from any point it could branch into dozens of possible lines. A couple misleads I experienced were: I was sure that Snape had was conflicted about helping H with the potion because he believed that the inevitable outcome of any world in which Draco was veered onto a better path would have been that Snape, in any iteration, would have borne the the full brunt of the burden and sacrifices necessary to bring about the outcome of Voldemort’s death at the expense of Snape’s own death, which he was willing for but conflicted. Another mislead I had was thinking how did they get from their coming together to the point of separation, severing, obliviation, and Draco’s death? I was sure it would be a matter of Draco could not stop hurting and killing people with an untamable possessiveness. To the point where it became impossible for H to stay, or impossible for her to stay with her soul intact so Draco had to orchestrate the severing to free her from the bondage of his possession. I agree with you the H/R pairing was unique. I’m a bit puzzled by it, haven’t bought it, but wonder if there is a fic out there somewhere that could sell me on it. I feel like this was a necessary pairing in this story because of Draco’s possessiveness being off the charts dangerous/volitile/toxic. If Harry/Ron hadn’t been paired, I think it would have been untenable for Draco to manage his jealousy. While I was slogging through the morass of the front of the story, I lightened the load and made my “audio” selection (I usually have two books running simultaneously, one audio) a comfort food choice-the darkwood wand (thebemoon), that one kept me laughing out loud (apologies to all the random people at whom I randomly burst out laughing on the trail), which offset the darkness. Although, funny enough, there were echos/parallels between the two. But, really, the mating and pack dominance rituals of rouge sentient blueberry muffins really helped! One of my jobs is a technical editor, so I am more highly attuned to grammar, semantics than most readers. (I purposefully dial it down/code switch when writing in comments, etc., so I make lots of grammar errors here.) I haven’t read a single fic that didn’t have some clean-up to do, it’s always a matter of degree. I can almost always suspend irritation and/or turn off my editing brain to appreciate and enjoy a fic for its assets, even in spite of grammatical issues, but I am still aware-some fics just cause more interference than others. In my opinion, this fic did not have issues that bothered me. Thank you for this rec and kicking my butt to push through-I’m glad I did.
ROSIE i think your comment NAILED it ❤️ it's so good to be able to read your comment and follow your thought process and emo-process because i can relate SO much! i agree - this is a remarkable piece and provokes emos i don't know i have encountered before w/ dramione. also, YES! harry & ron pairing makes sense in the grand scheme of this fic! i also love that you have remedies for angst stories - i need to try parallel reading sometimes soon because i tend to finish out one thing before starting the next! lastly - it's GREAT to learn something about you as well!! now i know why you are so sophisticated even if it's just a comment on my video ❤️❤️❤️
