solitary life devoted to God is actually pretty addictive. You feel like you're in heaven. You will feel calm, in peace, relax, and joyful. You forget everything else except devotion to God. You feel like you want to stay there forever and not having to leave the place.

I can't believe there are many thumbs up, without knowing the history behind it. Tibet was illegally occupied by the Peoples Liberation Army in 1950s.
The Chinese people who studied mainly in China have a lack of knowledge of Tibet, being taught the opposite way from their government. In answer to one of the rather dumb comments that have appeared, that the government probably supply the monk with everything. Devotees and other monks from other temples drop essentials off and he cooks as needed, as they do to other solitary monks, not just in Tibet, but also India, Thailand, Myanmar and other countries where monks live in isolation, as per Buddhist precepts. Like the video explains quite clearly; many people visit his little cave and temple - and of course they will always bring food! It’s a Buddhist tradition and staunch practice and is how hundreds of thousands of Buddhist monks subsist. Yes; it’s true they will also donate TVs and other “goodies” out of kindness and respect. It’s their way of showing their respect for someone that can live that way and those givers will receive merit and blessings in return. Times change. The Chinese government don’t give a damn or the the time of day to Buddhists and especially Tibetans! They are still destroying temples today as the government feel Buddhists will be a problem if left to get strong. They feel religion is a cancer of society; because of their fanatical domination of a communist government. Don’t forget that they brutally murdered 1.2 million Tibetans in the early 1950s, burning and burying them alive, while also crucifying them, for people to see what happens to what they deem as inferior people who go against the communist leadership and doctrine and destroyed well over 6000 ancient temples and still are destroying them today while always trying to replace Tibetans with Chinese blood and forcing thousands and thousands of Chinese to move into what was once Tibet and slowly replace them in a systematic manner; all because the communists wanted the water in Tibet and it’s source in the mountains, while buffering neighboring countries for military reasons and with hidden threats to cut off their water, then the huge forests cut down for lumber and now silver and gold for the communist coffers, while also now diverting water away from the Mekong Delta regions to dominate the countries that depend on the Mekong River. This old monk is in a better place and people will always make sure he has a stock of essentials, however far out. It’s ignorance like yours that perpetuates the ignorance it was born from. Look outside of your little box, if your ego will allow it.

You are absolutely right. Having lived in Asia for 25 years, one of those years living in a Temple I’ve seen time’s change. I’ve seen monks in Singapore driving cars and wearing watches while shopping. The austere living appears to be gone in many places. As I have said however, nowadays is a different era and gifts are bought much more often and brought by people to gain merit. You will find this more prevalent in the Mahayana tradition like in places such as in China, parts of Tibet, Singapore and Malaysia and others, but not so much in the Theravada tradition, prevalent in places like Thailand, Ceylon and Myanmar among others, often thought to be more the direct teachings of the Buddha, where the monks lead a much more humble and austere living. I’m sure this guy started his retreat living a very humble life, but became rather famous over time, which sadly brings in another side of life and he being a rather simple person was probably besotted with the easy technology of a TV and the Ariel that had to be put in and plenty of other gifts brought to his little place. It’s the times that are changing and visitors wishing lots of merit. The people that bring these gifts want easy merit with buying gifts, whereas in Thailand say, the monks go on rounds for offerings of food only and in return give blessings to the doners. Again, you are very right about a TV and other stuff changing a way of life that had previously lasted over 2,500 years in simple, humble and austere living. C’est la vie, C’est la vie...
