- There’s a new PlayStation 5 in town, name of “Slim.” Word is this town just ain’t big enough for two. Time for this fella to ride off into the sunset. For the uninitiated, the new PlayStation 5 doesn’t look much different, certainly not enough to be called Slim. But it does have some nice styling and updated ports for the era of USB-C supremacy.

The screw nails length indicator is a very cool touch. And the whole disk drive being removable without tools is amazing, too.

Personally, i like the torx screws on the fan. I've always noticed how easy it is to strip out phillips head screws, and even though torx is supposed to be a security measure, they're super common in most repair kits
Maybe they were a security measure years ago but I wouldn't say they are anymore. Even normal wood screws are often torx here. Used them all over the place when building my shed.
@@anarfox People have realized its superior to Philips heads in all respects. Less stripped tools, less stripped bolts, screws, fasteners. Good for everyone, Everyone except the makers of the Philips head tools. Hence why the torx is typically more expensive, both the tools and fasteners.
A "phillips" fastener on a Playstation console is likely actually a JIS fastener, that might be part of the reason why it strips out more easily.
This is so modular. Very cool. The screw length labels are a nice touch. What a nice design. Liquid metal tool....it really makes it seem like they tried to pull out every possible trick in the book to make the slim the best console they could instead of the cheapest console they could.
Back when the PS5 came out, my friends laughed when I said I'd wait for the PS5 Slim. I knew it would come!!

Still a scam product that requires paying for internet/multiplayer access, especially at $80 a year.

Say 10 years later, I need to swap out the ODD, will that online registration (pairing) still works? I guess not.
They can always remove the online pairing requirement later on by either updating the firmware for the "final version". In 10 years, nobody will even remember this "outrage".

What is that tool you’re holding at the end of the video? The one that emits the blue flame.
I don't have a PS5 yet so either I go for the slim or the rumored Pro version.
Suffice to say it's nice knowing the slim model has been made less cumbersome and more repair-friendly than before.
Now if only PlayStation released a set of black matte finish side panels.

I give it a 8.5 or 9. I mean everything is removable, even the soldered on ports if you are brave enough.
Wouldn’t count the ports. Thats like saying the iPhone is incredibly repair friendly because you can just solder the paired chips to your new components.

@@MathGeekQ Remem the main boot SSD is soldered as is the memory, (and you cant boot from the expansion one) and you cant use a third party DVD driver as it has parts parring. If you rake this 9 out of 10 then basically every other device on the market also gets that score.
@@hishnash removable boot ssd is added cost without much benefit as the software is not available like linux or windows. console is one machine fit all, the memory thing is debatable as they would like that exact memory chip and that exact amount in every ps out there. DVD thing is a legal thing and unliike apple, you don't need special tool or apple's permission to pair it
Imma be honest.. these teardown videos are way too short to serve any purpose other than entertainment. I wish ifixit would upload proper full-length disassembly videos.
You mention the disk replacement could use documentation - in my UK model, they did give printed instructions! Bizarrely, they’re in the safety guide and not the main manual.

Hello, when I play game, fan starts to run fast it is normal accually but gives a liitle noisy sound. it is sometimes makes me fell bad. How can I solve this issue.

Should also do a teardown of the Nothing Phone 2 and give feedback to them so they can help improve the design. It would make you guys well apart of the community and would help a lot with their pledge to sustainability.
Hopefully they remove the useless plastic bits and toylights inside. Such a waste.
Sony was always pretty repair friendly. They mostly tell you where to put the screws and voltages needed without having a manual because it's all on the board. Just open up a ps1.

The "slim" name is given by the media, not an official name. It is the 2nd revision, but not officially named slim by Sony.

Not bad, that's an improvement in my eyes when compared to the regular PS5.
Only thing they need to do now is have the main storage as removable (like the Xbox) instead of soldered down on to the board!

what’s the CMOS battery for? Does the original PS5 have that?
To save information of the system, keep clock updated etc, like any PC motherboard, since first gen Xbox and PS3, gaming consoles have similar PC structure.
Hope you guys can make a playstation earbuds teardown, i know that most buds are basically disposable due to the hassle of the architecture but it would be great if you guys feel challenged to check this product out too!

I think the need of an internet connection has to do with blu-ray certification. That’s why PS3 still receives updates next to the security updates.
Yes and no, if the blu-ray drives don't receive some security measures, like ensure that the guy is not putting a pirated blu-ray.
Pirated games in DVD and Blu-Ray disk will start to pop-up A LOT. Good to remember that Xbox 360 became one of the most pirated console until now, losing only to PS2, because of a DVD drive issue.
@@hicarodestrui Not really, we're past the age of burned discs. You'd need a hacked firmware anyway to run pirated games, it makes way more sense both for convenience and cost to just download them to the internal storage directly.

The DVD driver is expliclty parts paring. And no comment about the non user repealable main SSD... having the expansion is nice but form a reapir angle it does nothing as the device will not boot if the main ssd is dead. I feel there are a little bit of double standards on this tear down... just like many of the new right to repair bills seem to skip over games consoles.

If they didn't solder the main SSD to the board, it would be a winner. Like, unbelieveable.
Actually Bravo Sony! And their choice was completely right, TB+ SSD storage expansion through standard m.2 is pretty cheap now unlike a bespoke form factor like Xbox went with.

Really? The online activation of the drive is for you okay? So repairability doesn't matter anymore in the far future when someone wants to repair their PS5 and Sony isn't providing official drives or their servers for activation anymore...
As far as I know, this is a legal requirement to prevent theft/piracy. One day the activation servers will go offline though so yeah, it’s a problem :/
Its part of Blue ray regulations imposed by hollywood. They are keeping it anti piracy compliant to not get sued.
In my opinion if you use the same drive with the same console always, they shouldn't unregister the drive during factory reset unless you swap it. This really doesn't make any sense, at least from a consumer's point of view.
@@clue0001 yeah but what if it breaks? then you can't use the the same drive & you have to register the new one
They need to prevent piracy. Marrying the drive to the console is an optimal way of doing it, else people would be making knockoff devices to fit into the disc drive slot. Even then, at the end of the PS5s servers, Sony will likely issue a final update to remove needing an internet connection to pair the drive. All in all, it’s perfectly fine.
Again, ONE HDMI port?!?! I work at a repair shop, we get calls to fix broken PS5 HDMI ports near constantly. I would guess 10-20 a week. Why Sony wouldn't add a redundant HDMI port is beyond me, or at least make a DP.
Atlassian has this advanced issue/feature 1:02, but it will take time until some developers will use it. Some disks become unreadable, but you may not have many disks to test it. It's a good news, if your steam machine turned on into full screen on a windows machine today. Just have to take it all apart to clean the dust and must remove the fan to access the notebook radiator. Swapable phone covers, but do you realy want to swap them frequently. You dismantle it and get a blue beach sky fish to eat at any Kalimdor shore.
thank you so much for calling out the magnuson-moss warranty act and pointing out how shady these stickers that don't say warranty void if removed are - I would love someone to investigate if sony rejects warranty work if they are removed.

Only really happens in vertical standing PS5s due to gravity pulling the LM downwards overtime.

@@Otto45 well it was a common solution, bo still it restricts full capability of positioning the console, which could be avoided if this was dealt with in Slim version.
@Otto45 mine eventually overheated in horizontal but it was the PSU holes clogged, this new PS5 makes it easier to get to and clean which is nice. 😊

Build quality looks really cheap
There is no "slim" it's just a PS5
So it still has BS wrt the disc drive, but because they want to be sell them to anyone, they SORT OF lessen it, but you act like we have a win here and use Xbox as the "bad" example even though what they do is basically what everyone with a non-swapping disc drive does, including Sony when they needed to sell the drive as an add on?
I expect better from this channel, but I guess I shouldn't.

Yeah, Torx screws are quite commonplace in a lot of electronic devices, including laptops. At least it's not some weird tamper type screw.
