- Just like all other PlayStation consoles before it, PS5 now has a new model that is smaller, lighter, and referred to by fans as Slim. At least, that's what normally happens. Today we're gonna bust out the magnifying glass and take a close look at the new model. We're gonna unbox it, do a teardown, test out the noise levels with the fan, and see if it has coil whine. We're also gonna play around with that detachable drive and figure out its limits. New PlayStation hardware is always an exciting time. And lemme tell ya folks, I'm juicing right now. (I don't even know what that means, did it sound okay?)

The og ps5 design had really grown on me is like a monument, is there to be shown and appreciated
I am still annoyed about the new horizontal stand. It is more conspicuous than the original horizontal stand
Yeah, to be honest never liked the old horizontal stand either, just tried it twice, when I was firstly setting the ps5 and I wanted to see how it works but I was already committed on using it vertically and when there was that whole buzz about the liquid metal, used it horizontally for a week and gone with “fuck it, I’m gonna use is as I want and whatever”
Now I’m tempted to get the new stand, it seems more appealing to me.
@@OfficialResco yep, I totally agree in both situations the horizontal stand is clearly an afterthought
@@OfficialResco Sony almost always markets their consoles vertically lol, eveb the base PS4 which almost everyone did not stand up, especially not without the stand.
Yeap
This was not the first PS5 Slim video on UA-cam, but is by far the best detail and side-by-side coverage! Excellent work and editing 👌🏻💪🏻
Great attention to detail. The side-by-side comparisons and quickly switching between systems during the sound test makes the video so informative.
Can you register more than one disc drive to one console, yes or no?
Really excellent coverage. Not just different situations with activating the disk drive, but a teardown, size comparison, and also noise / coil whine testing. Thanks for going the extra mile and taking the time to do an indepth review instead of just pushing out a short 5 minute "gloss over" video like a lot of the other unboxings and first looks have been.
You always make really great content - please keep it up :D.
Can you or can you not register more than one disc drive to the same console? Yes or No?
I wonder, do you have to use the disc plate even if you decide to remove the disc drive at a later point in time?
Thank you Ryan for testing the usage of different Disc Drive and the registering. Great job and a huge thumbs up! So far the "Slim" model seems pretty much nothing different except for obvious smaller size and 1TB SSD. But I really like the 4 panel design tho, if you have multiple panel, you can mix and match and making a very colourful PS5 lol
Wah abg najmi sampai sini ye 🤭
Mystic , on the OG horizontal stand issue = just add a few tiny dots of adhesive putty and that stand will stay STUCK to your ps5 while in horizontal position. That putty removes easily with zero mess.
The led bar change is something I havnt seen anyone else point out yet and I think is a really cool detail. Good stuff
The slim is louder reading a disc because it's resonance VS the OG.
OG is dampened by the rubber on the bottom of the stand and it is "decoupled" from the console itself.
Slim has it sitting on the actual console itself on the surface, so it makes sense it's louder.
Phenomenal breakdown, always grateful for your appreciation of the little things. Still waiting to see when these appear in the wild here in Blighty UK ✌🏼
Why isn't it in the UK yet
Cause the stock of the OG PS5 hasn’t sold out yet.

Great video, as always! I must say that i kinda like the new design more and more. But some things, like the vertical stand not being included is really stupid. I do have my PS5 in vertical stand mode. I think it looks nicer that way and it looks like it has been made for it to be vertical. Even though Sony said that it doesn't really matter how you put your console.
I've been following your channel for a long time, always on point to get useful information from PS world. Thank you Mystic.
I like how thorough you are with thr explanation of PlayStation systems unlike some other UA-camrs

As always, thank you for a great review Mystic! 👍🏼
im with you on the Horizontal stand, the og one is such a pain as you said if you move, or want to switch cables haha also the new model really looks good i like it
I'm so glad you finally got the slim version. Wow, not one but two, but although I get it. Awesome unboxing video and hope you like the new model.
10/10 coverage my man! Thank you so much.
Very good video "Mystic. I agree with you said about the differences on the model. I love the futuristic look of PS5s 👏
A very well done in-depth review on the PS5 Slim. That 30% size difference is actually quite noticeable. Glad to see you can stick one in your living room.
And to be fair, the slim will grow on me in time, but there is no reason for me to swap my current 1216A PS5 for the slim, unless it breaks. But I love these in-depth reviews to see what's what. Keep up the great work!

Best slim video I've seen by far. Great work as always Ryan! :)
Best video on the slim I've seen, gonna get myself one when they're available
I really enjoyed the box comparisons.
Slim is "louder" when reading disc because the playstation shapes on the disc cover makes contact on tue ground when in horizontal.. and the vibration when reading a disc makes the plastic part of the unit vibrate on the ground adding some noise..
That seems like a bit of a design oversight lmao
If true(will try this myself when I get it), I'm curious to see if putting a cloth on the bottom could alleviate it lol
I recommend putting a mouse pad underneath. It will help with the vibration.

Just have it today lazy to unboxing it😅 thank you so much for the testing 😊❤
Thank you for providing an answer to the question if the seperate disc drives are resellable. I wondered about that for a while now. You dont find that kind of info with google so soon into new model launch
Great coverage as usual Mystic. The box comparison was cool to see since I didn't realize how huge the OG PS5 was. Also, very interesting that Sony included a USB-C to USB-C cable for the DualSense. I'm curious, has the DualSense always been able to charge via USB-C to USB-C or is that a new thing with the PS5 Slim?

Amazing in depth video!
The most impressive part of this video is how quickly you manage to pop that cover back into place. It usually takes me a good 5-10 minutes to get those things back on.
Took me 10 sec's to get mine off. Just lift it up from the top, and slide it down it gently. And the more you do it, the easier it gets.
10 whole minutes. I hope your not in the workforce. Id fire you for incompetence. Cant even figure out how to get some plates off a console. I can only imagine all the other stuff u cant do...very sad
@@DeadPhoenix86DP Not off, back on. I can take them off instantly, it's always lining them back up to put them on that I have trouble with.

@@LucieOne Putting them back is even easier. You start from the bottom and slide it on until your hear a snap. If it takes 10 mins to get yours on. Maybe you should look for a guide on how to do so.
Bought the PS5 back in August this year & been really enjoying it a lot. I have no need to "upgrade" to a slim although I have come around to the look of it & can appreciate some aspects of it. The PS3 & PS4 slim are generally great consoles to own so no doubt people who do decide to pick this up will love the slimmer size & removable disc drive.
I disliked the PS3 slim because of backwards compatibility issues. Original fat PS3 60GB model was by far the best one.
A slim wouldn't be an upgrade
@@reisshep i own the PS3 super slim. I think it's better than the OG PS3 slim imo.. I dig the look more & although it looks seemingly made for cheaper, I prefer the sliding disc tray & excellent design of the console but yes I agree the big boy PS3 was a marvel
@@TheGaara802 my bad forgot to put the quotation around the word "upgrade"
@@sikevillian The slim looks better no doubt, but it didn't play the PS2 games. I liked the fat PS3 because it could play both PS2 and PS1 games.
Nice! Mystic coming through in the clutch.
I’m so glad I own a launch day disc edition, a 1100 series digital, and got a 1200 series disc model earlier this year.
Why?
@@wrenboy2726For all the rooms in my house. 😂
Thank you for this incredibly detailed video!
The original model is just much better than this revision of the PS5.
In fact, the PS5 that I have is the original model with the disc drive and was manufactured in February 2021, 3 months after its launch.
The biggest problem with the Slim revision of the PS5 in my opinion is that the design looks really ugly and uninspiring compared to the look of the original model particularly with the line that runs across the upper portion of the console. They also made the upper top portion glossy while the bottom portion is made of the usual standard material, and the problem with the top being glossy is that it will get scratched too easily.
Another problem with the Slim revision of the PS5 is the online check-in requirement for the disc drive. Understandable since Sony has to comply with DMCA laws and with the disc drive now being able to be attached and detached at will so, they enforce this check-in requirement to make sure that the user is not using unauthorized third-party disc drives with the PS5. However, if you skip the network connection process during setup with the disc drive attached, it will warn you that the disc drive will not work unless you connect it online and register the disc drive to your PS5 along with requiring an update of the PS5 System Software if you had not updated it already. They should've just enforced this online check-in just for movie playback and still have it read PS5 and PS4 game discs much like on the PS4 where you have to connect it to the internet to enable offline disc movie playback without having to connect the PS4 to the internet each time you want to watch a Blu-ray Disc or DVD on your console. This will cause a problem long-term when Sony eventually shuts down the PSN servers for the PS5, meaning that these disc drives could become electronic waste without issuing an update to allow for local pairing of the disc drive.
Another problem with the Slim revision is that a multi-purpose stand is no longer included with the console out of the box unlike the original model which shipped with a multi-purpose stand out of the box so that you can position your PS5 horizontally or vertically. It only includes a horizontal stand. If you are people like me who always want to place our PS5 vertically, well too bad, you will have to purchase a vertical stand separately for $30.
If you do not have a PS5 yet, grab the original model while you still can before the inventory of the OG model runs out.
One thing you could do for information purposes: heat testing! How does the slim compare to the OG in temperature when playing a game? Curious to see if and how there are differences due to the redesign of the heat sink and pipes!
I believe the slim is a bit warmer. But it's design let's the hot air out faster without the plastic venting in the way. I haven't had an issue w mine. But I've only had it a few days
Late comment I know. U probly figured that out by now
Great video! I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. Thank you.
Glad the OG Playstation channel took some time to do an unboxing of the ps5 slim.
Just got the ps5 slim digital edition and it's a lot quieter than the original one.
I love it
Do you still hear the power supply running when a game is going? I ask because my Xbox Series S is completely silent (Not as powerful as the PS5). I am a new PS5 user and have been researching to see if its normal to slightly hear the power supply running.
@@ryanchaump6577i don’t have a slim, but the coil whine is fine dude it’s normal Microsoft just uses like silicone globs in their PSUs to eliminate coil whine

@@Deedric_KeePro isn't happening. Ever.
Yeah, it’s a minority upgrade. I’m glad I waited this year to get the ps5 slim for my kids. Not as huge, more storage, and looks better IMO.
@@frank234561November 2024 🙄
@@frank234561People said the same about the PS4 Pro, and back then there were less leaks, less dev kit leaks, no AMD new console SoC leaks, plus there was no mid generation upgrade consoles to assume it might even be a thing.
Great comparison video!
Omg thank you this guy just saved me lots of money I thought you had to be online at all times to use disc's
The online authentication for the disc drives is absolutely ridiculous. Sony is doing exactly what Xbox got a lot of hate for in the last generation. Crazy how words and a statement can ruin everything.
At this point Sony is making playing digital the only option by adding all these hurdles. They're not even trying to hide it anymore.
The Slim looks great! I wish I would've waited longer because the PS5 is obnoxiously big. I caved and bought the GOW bundle.
Great video and somehow I liked more the first model and the new model too thanks to this.
Thank you for testing swapping disc drives between consoles. I was curious what happened when you did that.
The issue with the 2 front usb c ports, is you now have to plug the headset bluetooth adaptor at the back, and it gets pretty hot back there. Otherwise you can pay for a converter to plug into the usbc front.
You can use a USB-C to USB-A adapter.
The thing I will become critical about this revision is that if at the end of life they don’t offer some support or change to the disk drive authentication.
I hope they do something, like remove the authentication or have a download for authentication you out on a flash drive or something.
The PS3 has been out for almost 20 years now and you can still find its latest 4.90 firmware patch online. Sony are definitely money hungry but they're also trying to maintain a loyal customer base, so I doubt they'll discontinue software patches for the PS5 long down the road.
Excellent walkthrough the new models.
Thank you so much for the detailed review bro,you almost cover everything except new eject button inside on side cover. 😍
The big reason isn’t not as small as typically they are is from the inability to node shrink more. The node shrinking of the APU in the previous generations was soo much larger. Put simply the PS5 launched with a very advanced node and 3 years later the slower shrinking and general economy shrinking it more isn’t viable. I mean before you shrunk for both power and price savings but that’s not the case anymore. Shrinking the node is starting to cost more not less per chip. I think they did a good job especially mentioning the fan noise.
...shrinking etc etc lol
The most important bit is the drive being interchangeable, i was really curious about that
As long as you have internet yes. Once the servers go down it’s unrepairable.
@@TheAmazingSpiderGuy_99 I imagine the servers will be up for a very long time, and by the time they aren't there will be some type of jailbreak to bypass it anyway.
@@Windy- I hope you’re right.
This is the PS5 Slim video I was waiting for!
Thanks for your time King. Nice job. I bought the Slim even though I have the Launch Series with the Mega Heatsink + Lots of Performance Mods. I played inside the console but never played with it. Never found the time. But still bought the Slim on the first day I dont know why and I was looking to sell my modified one but since I saw your video I cant get myself to sell the OG and Refund the slim that is still sealed with COD inside. I feel like I need both. The launch one is rare and is the one worth more in materials value out of the box. Sucks to be me. Im not rich and I dont know why I need 2 PS5 while I dont play.
I've personally never been bothered by the look or size of a console, kind of indifferent, all about how it functions and the games
Thank you Ryan. Excellent as always. I will miss this slim refresh and buy the PS5 PRO when or if it comes out.
It's not coming out so stop saying you will buy it instantly on the day it comes out like a good little consumer
@@GM-Shenmuewe will see I don't see the point in releasing a new more powerful console. Also are you a Sony executive how do you know it's coming out 😂
I believe a pro will come out. It’s foolish financially for Sony not to do it.
Your the only guy I've seen on UA-cam that's done the main test I was curious about, the coil whine. Fairplay to ya.
What a great video!
A really good in depth look at the system. We're you not tempted to get an all digital version, just to see what the cover plate was like?
Perhaps one of them is for someone else.
Man. Being a game collector can be great.
LOOK AT ALL THE BOXES COMPARISON!
By looking at designs, you can tell that 2010’s Sony finally found their “identity”. Using so much blue and white in their marketing.
Meanwhile around the PS1 to PS3 things where always changing.
Like the color of the PS logo. The font of the letters.
The PS2 menu was a mushroom trip.
Now the PS4 to PS5 feels like a very natural transition.
Sure it’s less creative, but at least it feels like they are moving with a Plan!
Very great video, thanks. Greetings from Spain.

Would have been great to see a comparison of box and console between this and the PS4 Slim, its closest cousin. Also the PS4 Slim was the best version of that generation, quiet, light, and really played some amazing games. So stupid that you need to register the drive first. This is terrible for people in rural areas or when the auth servers inevitably go down, making the attachment completely useless. Hoping for an updated revision that removes the restriction
I've noticed that the cooling fan on my slim is quite a bit louder than on any of the fat models that I've had, I have it sitting about 2 feet from where I sit, I could almost never hear the fan on the fat models and I can instantly hear the fan on the slim as soon as I start up a game.

I actually really like the design of the original ps5. The futuristic look and the fact that it commands attention is a plus in my book. I’m really not a fan of the slim look. The four plates, the fact that the top are glossy and the bottom are matte is not something I like either. And the disc drive attachment is way too pronounced compared to the rest of the console. The drives don't appear locked to a specific console, meaning you can reuse a drive from a borked console or just swap in a new drive if the old one breaks which is actually extremely nice for repairability since disc drives are one of the moving parts that may fail over time, and sending in your entire console for repairs kind of sucks.
A new software update will most likely change this lol
@@Overqualificationdoubt it - the most “significant” advertising I’ve seen from Sony during the lead up to release was the ease of repairs/swaps with the portability of the new setup.
I ended up with a completely digital console with my first PS4 due to the drive failing & it not being worth repair - I was heading on that path anyway, so it didn’t affect me in a meaningful way but it was certainly frustrating.
