  • In an era where instant gratification is commonplace, imagine trading your touchscreen for a sword, your loungewear for armor, and your 9-to-5 schedule for an existence ruled by honor, discipline, and the impending threat of death. Oh you think you can handle it? You think you're tough because you braved a week of camping, or fought off a flu without medicine? Welcome to the brutal yet fascinating world of the Samurai, an existence so harsh and complex, chances are you wouldn't survive a single sunrise.

There is a very simple reason why you wouldn't survive as a samurai.
Samurai *we're not supposed to survive* , they embued death. They meditated on it everyday, they welcomed it and always chased it. But that too, they fought.

His story was depicted loosely in the miniseries Shogun back in the 1980s. There are books written about him such as the First Englishman in Japan by PG Rogers and Anjin the life and times of samurai William Adams as seen through Japanese eyes by Hiromi Roger's. Still an interesting video.

1870 is when the predecessor of Mitsubishi was formed by Iwasaki Yatarō . He was working under Yamauchi ( samurai family ) clan .

"The Way of the Samurai is found in death. When it comes to either/or, there is only the quick choice of death. It is not particularly difficult. Be determined and advance. To say that dying without reaching one’s aim is to die a dog’s death is the frivolous way of sophisticates. When pressed with the choice of life or death, it is not necessary to gain one’s aim.
We all want to live. And in large part we make our logic according to what we like. But not having attained our aim and continuing to live is cowardice. This is a thin dangerous line. To die without gaining one’s aim is a dog’s death and fanaticism. But there is no shame in this."

As a samurai you would want to die eventually, so it doesn't really matter, you just battle till the end

Another video full of misconceptions (and images of Chinese warriors and bad pronunciations of the Japanese terms, but I'll give those a pass).
    1) Death for death's sake was not glorified and was not perceived as beautiful as this video claims. Dying for a great cause, dying while serving your lord, people and country with the greatest diligence and bravery - that specific type of death was considered beautiful.
    2) Only ronin (masterless samurai) looked for trouble, wore outlandish clothing and deliberately terrified common folk. They were a minority and those who became criminals were considered as such by the bakufu (shogunate), e.g. the samurai government. Gang wars and killing commoners were severely punishable crimes. These ronin were hated and despised by the huge majority of regular samurai.
    3) The information about samurai women is true but while focusing on the hardships, it misses an important point - that these women were very proud to be of the samurai class.
    4) All Sengoku warlords used ashigaru infantry, not only Nobunaga.
    5) There is no proof Yasuke was with Nobunaga inside the burning Honnoji and that Nobunaga asked precisely him to cut off his head.
    6) Seppuku and harakiri have the exact same meaning, but the word harakiri was not used much in Japan, it was slang. Westerners popularized it. Seppuku is the official term. And samurai were not above the law - samurai who had commited a crime punishable by death were given the option to commit seppuku to preserve their honour and not bring shame to their families. Samurai criminal who did not want to commit seppuku, however, were just beheaded like common criminals.
    7) All armours from all regions and historical periods have weak points. That didn't make them a liability during hand-to-hand combat. And all armours everywhere were weak to blunt force weapons like maces and war hammers. A samurai knew very well where his armour had gaps and weak points and would expect attacks there. Also, managing to bypass a samurai's defense and slash or thrust in those gaps between the armour was not easy at all. Maybe it wasn't your intention, but you made it sound as if not wearing any armour would've been better than wearing one.
    8) Samurai didn't revolt because foreign trade was allowed. They revolted because the treaties were unfair and discriminatory and the shogunate was weak and allowed that to happen. And I think you mixed up the Boshin war and the Satsuma rebellion a bit.
Please consider reading serious authors on samurai history and culture like Alexander Bennett, Thomas Conlan, and Karl Friday.

The opposite is also true here. The Samurai Class from feudal Japan wouldn't last ten minutes here in the U.S. what, with just about everyone owning guns! No sooner than one of them took a head over some perceived slight, imagined or not, they would be shot in theirs! They went through exactly that during the post Edo period against Japanese troops with firearms in the late nineteenth century. I mean let's be fair about this. If we have to try and exist in their world where they have mastery with their weaponry and we don't, then let's posit them trying to negotiate our world, too. They would not do well here at all. The same goes for just about any warrior class from any other times throughout history, even ones with more primitive firearms. 😉😎

Probably rare for a a good samurai to die of old age during the warring states period.
