We are dreamers of our lives both in waking and in sleep: Thomas Peisel at TEDxLowerEastSide

  • Thomas Peisel's book Oneironautics: A Field Guide to Lucid Dreaming teaches its readers not only how to remember their dreams, but how to become lucid (think the motion picture, Inception) within them. Inspired by the idea that lucid dreaming isn't about sleeping but about waking up, Thomas shows us that when we begin to consciously create out own dreams, we naturally understand how we can consciously create our waking lives as well.
Thomas is a graduate of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. His website, dreamlabs.io, aims to explore the potential of dreaming through interactive social experiments and educational videos.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This is a great Tedx, I’m surprised with how little recognition it has on UA-cam. Amazing speech with genuine context for reality and how to view the world.

When I was 6 I started lucid dreaming on my own. Now I had become a psychologist but it is more difficult for me. Anyway I will learn again and I would like to test the potential of LD. Even this hypothesis of awareness over matter... Love.

I love that description of the dream having a present moment just like this one, as compared to the memory we have of it as we wake up which is usually much more hazy. I have experienced both lucid and non-lucid dreams where I was totally present. The difference being in lucid dreams I am there experiencing the dream "live" whereas the non-lucid dreams with the feeling of being very present feel like "I was just there in a completely different world/scene/location!"

I’m so glad I have found this! I’ve had lucid dreams for years. Ever since I was little I’ve always said I think we go somewhere else in our dreams.

You are also dreaming when you are awake. A spiritual awakening is when you become lucid in waking life.

Very intriguing, I love profound ideas like this. I am a avid lucid dreamer as well and for the longest time I was searching for a technique that can help me be more aware of dreams when it occurred and when I first heard yours it Sounded like a good technique to try out. I have profound, wonderful dreams and conversations with myself. I’ve seen the future and beauty in my dream scape. I was start to let go of the wheel in lucid dreaming but this has fired me up to take it more serious. Btw, everything you said in this lecture is something I’ve experienced first hand and resonates!

Life is a dream from which we awake when we die. The universe is a brain.

Lucid dreaming gives me migraines! I prefer non lucid dreaming! The weird dreams help me figure out what's needed to be done in my awake life!

When I'm reacting to and not shaping a dream I don't feel isolated or not one with my life's direction! Lucid dreaming is over rated I think and feel!
