- Every night, we have a dream. We often don't remember having them, or simply dismiss their contents. In his talk, Dr. Selterman provides evidence that suggests our dreams might be more valuable than we currently think. He draws on his experience as an expert on dream research, providing numerous examples of what they reveal about our inner selves. Dr. Selterman provides ways we can analyze our own dreams to better understand who we are.
Dr. Selterman is a Lecturer in the Psychology Department at the University of Maryland. He runs the DREAM Lab at Maryland, with research interests including romantic attraction/dating, emotions, attachment in interpersonal relationships, patterns of dreaming, sexual behavior, and morality/ethics.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Anyone else here these dreams and are like bish who the heck has these normal dreams when I’m over here fighting Greek gods with deadpool like 🤔
True. Can someone explain what ahom dynasty is? I created the dynasty u see. And I also destructed it with a simple sophisticated pen.
Yeah like what can a dream about invading school with the ninja turtles because I discovered the director owns Disney and is a reptilian tell about me?
My dreams are all over the place. Its like i travel
I'm Greek haha
Sounds like a fun comic
Amazing lecture, I agree about the importance of dreams. I have logged many dreams from recurring to extremely odd dreams, and the Dreamworld seems as real as when I wake up. I've had many dream warnings that 2 years later a version of the event happened, it's always a 2 year marker, very interesting. I have deep psychological dreams and it drove me to understand myself pushing me to get my Bachelor's in Psychology.
That's awesome. How is the degree coming?
I say the same thing. To everyone who will listen. I believe our dreams are sending us messages about ourselves and all we have to do is pay attention and we can become the most enlightened versions of ourselves. It's hard to do with so many distractions.. TV, work, coworkers, past regressions, music drugs, daily things we do everyday and so forth, but it's our job to decipher the meaning of those dreams. And that's when I believe we will begin to find the answers to our life's problems.
Why do dream studies often lack reference to lucid dreaming? Its one of the most fascinating phenomenons in the realm of dreams. The answer to his question, how do you know if you are dreaming? Do you know in the dream or when you wake up.
The answer is... sometimes i become conscious in dreams and have a full awareness/conciousness as if i were awake. I know its a dream, and when this happens, the normal dream just stops as if someone hit pause on a movie, and i can begin manipulating my dreamscape canvas. Usually i cant resist the temptation to fly, or speak with dream characters knowing they are being voiced by my subcousious, which is a surreal experience. I even try tell them they aren't real, with lots of varied reactions hahaha.
Innercynic i really wish i could lucid dream. i tried many times but have never had any luck
I've managed it, but only a handful of times. I've only ever experienced it by accident too. It's this strange realization at some point that, "Hey, wait a minute, this is a dream!" From that point on the entire world feels (almost) entirely at my command. Sometimes I have brief moments of lucidity that seem to falter, possibly a sign that something was disturbing me in the real world and slightly waking me up but then stopped. Usually one of the things I end up doing once I become semi-conscious is I extend my hand and start moving objects and people around with my thoughts like I'm a Jedi or something. Sometimes I control electricity or metal like Magneto. It's a fascinating experience.
Most people know nothing about this. I used have lucid dreams all the time. I think it had something to do with how interested I was at the time in dreaming. I was obsessed and would remember 4 or 5 every night. Now I have them rarely.
The comment below was meant for people in general who can't lucid dream yet...or get lucid but can't stay in them. You Innercynic, sound like you've got AMAZING lucid dreams! I'm still not great at manifesting... BUT I can always fly!! :-D
If you're actually telling the truth.. Then I'm jealous af. :D
Boy they have some real normal dreams
Hahahahahhaha i swear. They were eben logic
My dreams are so vivid and wild sometimes they would never be mistaken for reality 🤣
If that’s the case why don’t you try to become lucid in them?
Should be pretty easy since you can so easily distinguish the difference
@@kittykildare4906 why are you being rude for absolutely no reason
@@kittykildare4906 I also have random vivid dreams where something crazy like alien prying mantises are taking over my city. Obviously that would never happen, but that doesn't mean I can always realize that during the dream. No need to be rude
@@abbiemarie38 Dreams is just a psychedelic trip
I sometimes dream something and donot remember it until that things happens to me in real life. Then I'm like wait a sec, this has happened before.
I have very vivid dreams, most of which solve problems or portray options of how things could be. Although some dreams seem real, there's this weird thing about my dreams where a lot of them are mostly in third person, as if I'm watching myself.
O my gosh me too I think it means we are detached in a way or I Dream I'm more than one person
Being in the third person is often a condition of what's called lucid dreaming. Are you able to control; what happens in the dream?
If your dream is in 3rd person the dream is not about u it's about someone else
This is pretty much the only way I know how to dream I think. I'm always watching myself and I know its myself because I can see myself. Sometimes it switches to first person when certain important events are happening it feels like I'm in the driver seat and making decisions within this "dream reality". I often find myself physically or mentally affected when I wake up and quite often have to take about 20 minutes to get back in touch with reality after waking up.
That happens to me too
I've be having this recurring situation in all of my dreams lately. No matter what the dream is about, I'm always stuck in north carolina trying to find a way back to TN. I should add that I was stationed in Camp Lejuene when I was in the Marines. Usually in these dreams I have lost someone or something as well and I am frantically searching for it or them.
Has anyone ever dreamt about a place they've never been before, an then eventually, unintentionally, being at that place while awake and sorta experiencing a deja vu moment because you did almost the exact same thing in your dream?
Something very similar just happened to me. Months maybe even a year ago now I had this dream were I was at some kind of an ancient ruins looking place, and it started to fill with green something and we all basically almost died. Anyway, I was looking at state parks around me and I saw the place I was in. I fell drawn to it now. I plan on visiting as soon as I can.
@@abbiemarie38 Crazy how the mind works. I've had premonitions before. The craziest premonition I've had is I was riding in the car with my grandpa and I had a feeling a wreck was gonna happen. The next day my sister and grandmother wrecked the car. Fortunately it wasn't a major wreck and they were fine.
Yes a lot has happened for years and events
Also had a reacting dream over the last 10 plus years of a massive earthquake and tsunami hitting the north island of New Zealand the two dreams were vivid and detailed the last I was on a hill watching the wave come east cost of the North Island
So true that very few people pay attention to their dreams and on top of that I believe sooo many people have very poor sleep hygiene. I say that with confidence because I had been totally oblivious of the importance of proper sleep and it was causing a lot of stress and affected my mental wellbeing.
Sleep seems to just be one of those things we must do and pay little attention to so it escapes us during the day.
If you are reading this then you must have landed on this video for a reason. Proper sleep is one of the best things you can do for yourself on a daily basis! Make time for yourself an hour before bed and try your best to stick to a schedule!
Great talk Dylan!
Cheers!

The dreams he mentioned are quite boring. I once dreamed my phone had an app that made it grow eyes around it when it was submerged in water. When I dropped my phone in a lake it turned into a little pile of blinking eyes.
I once dropped acid at the beach and saw numbers and equations coming from the waves and combining to become other equations. For some reason I found it to be very beautiful at the time. Ever since, my love for math grew tremendously. I began to max out math placement tests which I could never do in the past. I only paid 12 bucks for that LSD and I think it was the best money I've ever spent. The whole trip was enjoyable beyond belief.
Cool
I know right? My dreams are similar to you. I thought dreams were weird and wild. These were so mundane.
This is such a good TedTalk, I love this topic and I loved how it wasn't just cliche information everybody knows about dreams. Now I think of them in a completely new way.
I dreamed my boyfriend died 😬🥺 I literally woke up really sad even though he wasn’t dead in real life.
Half way through - everything is so obvious!
I remember my dreams very in great detail and I've been keeping track of them since about 3 years. I interpret them often and have found that they are relevant to my real life. This might just be confirmation bias but idk
I GOTTA say I love how he delivers the jokes like they aren't jokes, and how they kinda aren't even. Somehow it makes them all the funnier! I appreciate it. And this cool talk!
Supa interesting:)
My dreams lately have been filled with a very consistent theme of terror and feelings of turmoil, frustration and fear. Although I always wake up gladly thinking it’s only a dream and it makes me happy. Still depressing stuff though
Same with me. I need a solution to stop it....its depressing me too much
These are some vanilla dreams!! My dreams are so much complicated and bizarre! It’s like I live in another universe and reality when I am asleep. All the people in my dreams I know and some I don’t. I dream about moving all the time too
I have been doing this for the last few weeks. What I have noticed is that Monday night/Tuesday Morning for the last 2 weeks I have multiple (4+) all random dreams. The rest of the week is maybe 1 or 2 per night.
glad that the comments section is agreeing with me that these dream examples are so normal, like, my dreams are all having quests in the desert and levitating around my old elementary school (and getting kids to throw me a rope so I can turn into a human kite), running away from dystopian gov's, turning into jello, etc
He fell into the paradox of the illusion of time, it is not as though the dream is predicting the future but more like the dream is reflecting their inner state and also affects them if the dream is remembered subconsciously at the very least. Further Studies ought to be conducted.
Relly great message! Thanks a lot I never understand the meaning of them and was just obsessed that I dream so much Nonsens ...
I found out why we dream first and noticed that it’s everything we are doing because me and my family go camping every year to the same spot and we move around so the dream gets mixed with the area we are mixing and by the people we see after our camping trip.
Thanks 👍🏾
I found your research relevant and interesting, helped me understand some key factors leading to stressors in my life that I didn't realize as well as realize that my choice to be single now is the best decision. Thank you
Great introduction..
Does anyone knows how can i find the picture in the end with the kid?
Thanks in advance!
Man, you would have fun with my dreams, I dream every night and remember them clearly.
Wow!! That would be great..
i always dream about the morning before, i bream about the worst case scenario ( being late, house burning down, getting fired) when I then wake up I know what not to do in that day.
I keep dreaming of my high school crush, I haven't spoken to him in 4 years, yet I'm always dreaming of him. I hardly ever dream, but when I do, This is the only type of dream that I have, and it is constant. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I'm dreaming this?
There's probably a part of you thats still attached to the person. This happens to me.
@15:48 if anyone knows how can i get this photo ide apreciate it alot
My dreams are so vivid mostly future events like phenomenons or crime scenes and I was communicating with those people in my dreams and asking their names. Most of my dreams came true. Sometimes I think I am crazy because I was learning languages on my dreams. Sometimes I fly through the worm hole or on the wall of our house and I control where I go through how many miles I fly then I will landed to some places. I can’t explain it. Sometimes I dreamed of numbers like winning lotto numbers but I didn’t care about it after I woke up. So weird
Can relate
i came here to study for my test found my teachers ted talk lol
My craziest dream was when i was in higschool. I dream I was learning about human body in a class, i was in a class sitting on the floor with other 3 ppl and a funny teacher. 1 year later the EXACT moment happen (i went to a medical schoold).
Did you felt deja vu?
I don't understand..why ain't i getting these dreams?
My ex wife used to get up me and accuse me of cheating after she dreamed ..... Hence the ex part....
The night we camped in the mountains 3 years ago loud ppl came in at midnight and I was so mad. We had to get up early to drive back 12 hours. I dreamed about going to yell at those ppl. And lots of wolves. I didn't feel horribly tired the next day even after 4 hours sleep and stress.
Inventing Anna?
Hai Dr...I am getting dream every night my most of dream about saving people...it’s kind of story...in my dream I’m action heroine like super power...so I’m fighting against to the bad things and I’m saving people,family,ext.....kindly explain what it mean. ...
I really wish I didn’t dream! I am exhausted every morning.
Most dreams I have start disappearing and slipping away like sand through a hour glass the moment I wake up ! 🙄
Have you noticed that you can have memories in your dreams, memories of things
you see or may have done in the past but inside your dreams, which shows that our mind is capable of inventing memories that fit the context of the dream and at that moment when you are dreaming and you are in a certain place in your dream and you recollect a memory related to that place, a memory that never existed and that your mind created for that dream but at the moment of dreaming you are sure you had that experience in the past but inside the context of the dream! Now I wonder if when awake our memories are also an invention of our mind?
A part of our Brain has its own life on the dreams...a paralell reality that works while we sleep.-
I truly believe it too
When i go to sleep i remeber last dream(from night before) seconds before falling to sleep and continue that dream.does someone know where i can informe about it?
Does your dreams continue?
Strange this popped up for me in. I've been longing for romantic companionship. I've had a new trist each night with another of my "type" with one thrown in the middle where my semi estranged med refusing bipolar drunk of a husband lent me his ccard and I spent 50$ on lucky charms then was in fear of his wrath the rest of the time. I do love having the literal man of my dreams , I wake up feeling rested and loved. Self love rules
I feel like time is only relevant on earth so that's why our dreams can seem like the last so long.. our consciousness isn't restricted by time.

I am getting irritated , sometimes when I sleep I see glimpses of some thing that hasn't happened yet for me and I forget and later i remember all again at the time of happening. Every dream won't be like that but some but if it is frightening for me I won't forget, once I said this to my mom when I was studying at school something exactly happened like that after 2 years. I tried to change the outcome but I failed. It seems like the life is recorded, no matter how hard I tried to change it eventually it repeats
Most of my dreams are totally nonsensical... some being ridiculously funny, others are totally terrifying. Sometimes I dream of dead family members visiting me, having a reunion of sorts. These dreams are very happy but once I wake up, I’m left with a feeling of sadness for the day. I also dream a lot of seeing myself in other time frames, Victorian times, Wild West Times, and the 1930’s and 1940’s. It doesn’t look like me, yet I know it’s me. 🤷♀️ And there’s quite a few dreams of being lost in an unfamiliar place and worrying about how I’ll get home.
i need to talk to this guy about a dream i had last night.
In my dream i'm going to hug Nicole Kidman...suddenly while im dreaming i realize that just a dream
I can tell at the start of a dream whether it's going to be a good one or a bad one because the darker the lighting is, the worse it is.
That was a nice lecture but I guess you should have mentioned about Sigmund Freud somewhere .
He says that unhappy relationships with sex dreams go down and happy ones go up... If a relationship is unhappy wouldnt they go down regardless of the sex dream? I believe you have a faulty correlation. Someone reply, Id love to be proven wrong but it seems inherent to a unhappy relationship that itd go down and a happy one to go up
The night after an intruder came to o the house I was pet sitting at 1 a.m. and I called 911 and it took the police 50 minutes to get there and they caught the guy, who had stolen $10000 from that house before, I somehow went back to sleep from 4 to 6 and dreamed about the police taking that guy up to the house and him asking me to forgive him. I was very mad and didn't think I could. Idk if that dream has led but it was me trying to work out a stressful situation...
Hello, i dream each and every time I sleep. I don't know why. Most of the time I am able to memorise after waking up.
Me to.
We all do and can! It is normal.
Is he Chase from netflix series called "Inviting Anna"?
Dreams are the past present future fantasy an reality in one
i am sorry but when i am awake i know that i am awake. it is when i am dreaming that i don't know that i am dreaming.
🥵 now can't tell what's real, thx
did anyone else answer that riddle with "O,T"? hahaga infinitely goes on as "O,T,T,FF,O,T,T,F,F,O,T,T,F,F"
You sound like Derek from Veritasium
I want to be in a study. I think I’m the exception.
14:55 bwammm bwammmm
I talk in my dream and say that " This is dream : ) "
Ha I never have romantic dreams . as I have no romantic experience.
I came here because I had such a different dream then I’ve ever had in my entire life I’d say it was so real i felt everything and it so detailed and crazy i woke up kinda scared for the first time in my life so I wanted to know if it had meaning and this video doesn’t help
The other day I dreamed I went back to 1963 and took a video of the parade where JFK was shot. These kids were marching and I remarked they didn't yet know JFK was shot. And mom was beside me and I said those kids were her age. Then I went to Wal-Mart. Another dream the same night was Superman and some villain plotting to weaken him.
Wait... Lucid Dreaming? I don't think I can do it... As soon as I realize I'm dreaming, the dream ends and I'm awake again...
I'm thinking of trying to animate my dreams since I have been writing them down ever since I started getting them...
Low energy level :(
@@theworldofluciddreams2977 Oh oki then, thanks for letting me know
I hate youtube commercials
I got the letter brain teaser in like 5 seconds. Now what?
zzzzzzz.... thank you this talk helped me go to sleep.
Why do people think this is boring? I'm barely thirteen, yet this dream has my blood pumping in excitement as I take notes. This topic is amazing, and I thought that the speaker was as well.
and then fail my project on dreams lmao
The dream 💤 is the small hidden door in the deepest and most intimate sanctum of the soul, which opens to that primeval cosmic night that was soul long before there was conscious ego and will be soul far beyond what a conscious ego could ever reach. - *CARL JUNG, The Meaning of Psychology for Modern Man*
The dreams mentioned sound made up. Too much detail, too logical and complete. Too. story like. Dreams are more surreal. Dreams are surreal.
Likely selection bias to prove a hypothesis.
That's exactly what I was thinking the storys are fine but it has too much detail, because I can't remember any of my dreams to that extent I could give u bits n pieces of it
I’ve had plenty of highly detailed and structured dreams.
It sounds like the sample was American college students, so that's likely to skew the results, or at least could do.
Vacuous is the concept that springs to mind . . . wow, nothing really profound or novel at all here.
Hasn't anyone every heard the idiomatic expression *"Let me sleep on it."* ?? . . .
"This usage was first recorded in 1519 in the state papers of King Henry VIII: “His Grace ... said that he would sleep and dream upon the matter.”
I had a dream of a bartender. She's 22 I'm 44. It was very intense hot ..she scratched me in my dream and when I woke up I had the scratches on my back
Jesus 50% of the content about the science of dreams is just anecdotes. There was like a whole 2-3 mins of science in this video.
I keep getting spider dreams :/
That second story was not a dream
The 4th one too.
What is the screeching noise in the background?? Are you tryna brainwash us or what
Dream is psychedelic trip

Evidence found to support pre-conceived theories? OMG, that is a good way to miss the big picture. Dreams are obviously multi-functional, so what? Is it possible that dreams create and shape our reality? .... and that is the big picture. (and a dream journal? a pointless self indulgence!)
Sculptors know this to be true. Your brain works in your sleep.
Clickbait!
What a waste of time this guy.
?
Stony brook? Really? Booo!
boring
Why don't you add more commercials..that's it for me
