Great summary of idle issue causes and solutions. After searching for awhile and reading a mass of confusion over sources of high idle, this made it all clear. Thank you and God bless. I say this as a free man worshipping God out of love and appreciation for all he has done for me, contrary to what I deserve.

@1:01 what is that tube next to the sensor? Mine is getting dry rotted and I am having issues with a very high idle when it is cold. I had the idle air controller replaced in the summer of 2020. It will go to almost 3000 rpm when it is cold for a few seconds. It does this when I first start it cold and never did it until now. It also only does it when it has been set for a few hours. This all started when the weather got below 25 F degrees. The AC and heater work well so the vacuum on that end is good. My Ranger is 21 years old and it's starting to nickel and dime me too much. In this economy it's that's $250 for this $500 for that. My brother-in-law is a mechanic and I still can't afford it even when cuts me a break.

Hello. I picked up a 2000 Ford Ranger V6 3.0L with Idle around 1700rpm. Then I cleaned the MAF and bought a new IAC. Temp sensor on the intake doesn't seem to fit very well, that could be a problem. I have not checked the TPS. I removed the throttle body and cleaned it with air intake cleaner.
The new IAC works better and idles about 1200 without AC on. When the AC is on, then it rises up to 1500 and won't go back down, even when the AC is turned off again.
I touched the IDLE Adjustment screw. :O But I put it back like you showed.
4:15 ERG?... you mean EGR? I might need to replace that.
    What do you think?

Just curious, how would a plugged air filter affect the idle on my 2003 Ranger V6?

Well I went to the auto shop this morning to purchase a can of MAP cleaner, as you recommended. On a whim, I purchased an air filter as well. I bought this truck used a while back and, when I got to figuring, realized "a while" equated to over 3 years. Funny how time speeds up when you get older. Anyways, I've never changed the air filter and, considering how many dusty roads I drove on this summer, I realized a new filter was long overdue.
To make a long story short, I changed the filter as soon as I got home ( took a while for the dust cloud from the old filter to settle) and planned to clean the MAP later today when I got home. Imagine my delight when I fired up the motor and, after a minute, its idle settled down at a nice 800 rpm instead of the 1100-1200 rpm it's been idling at for over a year.
      Thanks again!

Carburator cleaner is safe to test for vacuum leaks as long as its done shortly after starting a cold engine.
Spray it on hot exhaust manifold and you'll probably have a fire.

I know this is way out if date. I really just want people to know that the device that he referred to as the throttle position sensor is actually the DPFE which controls the EGR valve. The throttle position sensor is located opposite the side of the throttle body as the throttle cable.

Hi just found your channel. Got a question, I have a 1995 ford explorer 4.0. When I connect the plug to the AIC the idle increases to 2000 2500. disconnect the AIC and the idle drops back. I have replaced the AIC but still the same problem. Have not checked for a vacuum leak but I don't think that's the issue as all vacuum controlled devices seem to work fine. BTW love your channel, you are very good at explaining things. Got any thoughts or suggestions would love to hear them. Thanks

My 02 edge 3.0 v6 is not set up like this .
The problem with that is this is the best explained video regarding a high idle on cold start only issue.
I've changed all sensors and ran out of money for the pcv value.
I must say it's quite possible the Teflon coating is gone .
I did spray carb cleaner and found no leak .
I do like your smoke machine.
I did mess up and turn the screw .
Put it back by bring the clean threads to the edge of the dirt .
Do a video on an 02 edge lol 3.0 v6 auto . It doesn't mean to be a sinner , it's trying to follow the right path yet it's difficult living on the edge 😆

Anything I can try that I haven't tried already?

Great video thankyou for that🙏🏽. Im not sure if you have stumbled onto this problem but, i have a 99 ranger 2.5l. Cleaned the throttle body, changed the idle control valve, air charge temperature sensor, filter and now my truck accelerates when i turn it on for like 5 seconds then idles normal, then i start to drive, as im coming to a stop, i put it on neutral (its stick shift truck) to slowly stop, but it keeps sounding like the motor is accelerating for like 5 seconds as well. And as soon as i come to a complete stop, it idles normal. Its concerning to me because it didnt do that before i did all that i did to it. Thanks in advance for your time!!

I have a 02 Ranger 3.0L that sometimes has a high idle only after I drive and put it in Park. I have to restart the truck for it to reset the RPMs to normal.
Also, not sure if related or another problem, but it has a small vibration on start up, almost like a misfire. It's not a constant vibration like a bad motor mount will give you. I have changed plugs, wires, ignition coil, fuel filter, air filter, PCV valve and have cleaned throttle body, IAC valve and MAF sensor. Still shakes. No CEL.
Any ideas what I could be dealing with?

@@bryandunn4886 if you’re referring to the high idle in park then no, unfortunately. The problem is very rare that it’s impossible to diagnose so I just learned to live with it.

Yes the high idle, other day I cleaned the iac even that it ain't that old, then i sprayed a little bit of seafoam intake and valve cleaner in the little vacuum hose that runs to the canister on the left side facing the engine, been 3 days with out it doing it,don't know if it lubricated something, or loosen some gunk loose, but also has not got back in the 90+ degree weather, maybe something to try , I'll see if I can get back here in a few weeks with update

I work on outboard engines and I’m we have to do link and sync s on the IAC,s and Throttle body’s and f they are not In sync you will have a bad idle. I’m guessing that a high idle would not be indicative of a high idle but I thought I’d ask about it.
We used a connect so we could read the output of the IAC in milli volts. My question is there a manual written way to do this ?
I’d imagine that my 4 stroke engine Yamaha would be similar. It was an older one similar to this trucks age.
Anyway Im looking for a manual that will show me this operation any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Ps
My truck idles at 2000 and then it settles down but now after it settles down it will stall out. I haven’t done anything to the truck yet I’m just doing my homework. Thanks again. I appreciate you making this video.

Yeah bought my ranger last 6 months. 122k on it and soon as I got it felt the hard shifting up / down ... One garage said meh .... it's normal for trucks.
Got a stuck torgque converter clutch stuck and had the transmission and converter rebuilt /replaced.
Still shifts hard, imo. Reverse I can hear it bang on the rear diff or it's. Driving my shifting is meh to ok. Sometimes it hits hard those seem to happen if I accelerate and then ease up right at a shift point .... then she hits hard.
To say the least I'm so not happy with this truck. My 2nd foray into Ford land in 55 years. I'm sad I stepped out of my anti ford box.

Gosh this is a good well thought out video. My ranger 99 only idle's high when it's rolling and that goes to a good idle once it comes to complete stop. Apparently this is to make shifting easier while you're driving around but it's so high that it cant engine brake at all and it's just not good. Can you recommend which of these things to check first for that problem?

8 ball I had the same issue with my 2001 ford ranger 3.0 truck come to find out it was a small hose (on mine it was cut I have no idea why) that is connected to a black, softball size ball that's attached to the fender. That ball should have two vacuum lines comming out of it. one line should go straight into the fire wall and the other should be attached to a vacuum line supplying vacuum. These lines are very thin and made out of plastic and can become brittle in time.

Ok, good info. If you have a vacuum leak, you should get a P0171-P0172 code bank one and bank 2. Which the maf sensor will cause as well. (4 cyl will just be P0171) but gotta love that homemade smoke machine! Did your ranger throw a code for the dpfe switch?? You would think it would for egr valve issue. Also, with my ranger i have found that aftermarket parts dont carry the same values as OEM so if it is available, i would use the motorcraft brand. Just saying. I did some research on your symptoms and found that a service bulletin was posted by Ford concerning this issue. Apparently some models may have a faulty connection at the throttle position sensor. See this forum for more information: www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53507

Westley, I have the obd reader, but it is not giving me much to go on....lean mixture and stuff.(p0340, and P0171) Not identifying a bad sensor....However, just a while ago I took off the whole MAF housing/sensor with the other wires and guess what.....started the engine and it ran fine for a long time....restarted each time at the right rpm, etc. never sped up. So tomorrow I am going to buy a new MAF and hopefully that will solve my problem...will let you know....thx Chris

Wesley, My truck is running very well now...not perfect, but much better than it has in two years. I changed the MAF and that made a big improvement, but the truck continued to refuse to start when warm. I then changed the crankshaft position sensor on the bottom from of the engine, by the flywheel pulley - in part because it was easy to get to, and finally I changed the idle air control sensor on top of the engine. All of that seems to have done the truck. It idles great, better than in two years, and it starts up perfectly every time. I still get a code p-0340 which is the camshaft position sensor, and I would change that too, but it is too difficult to get to...I would have to pay to have it done....must remove the intake manifold I think to change it, and that is more than I want to do. At any rate, I drove the truck all over yesterday, stopping a lot, etc and it ran great. Just thought I would let you know in case other's had questions.

A bad CTS can cause high idle. Warm the engine first. Check the oil and radiator first. After replacing parts, recheck the codes.

Marty Stevens Thanks for the post Marty. What is a CTS?

    • @martystevens3969
      @martystevens3969 6 років тому +1

Resurrection Auto Coolant Temperature Sensor. If your CTS is acting up, it can cause the engine to run rich or idle too high. They go bad slowly and gradually causing your car to use gas. A Actron CP9690 code tester tests live, graphing, smog readiness test, record, oil light turn off, and MORE! It has cables for OBDI for Ford G.M., Chrysler and 2 Toyota. It has a cable for OBDII. It has a cigarette lighter cable. It comes in a black pouch with instructions. You can get a battery adapter to hook up to the cigarette lighter from EBAY. It can check sensors with the engine off like MAF, IAC valve, EGR open percent, RPM'S, oil pressure, coolent temperature, fuel pressure, vacuum, oxygen sensor voltages, charging system voltages, etc. The Snap-on Vantage does a whole lot more! It can show wiring diagrams of sensors, check ignition voltages, It can check codes. It's better than a code tester to REALLY find out what's wrong with a car. It's advanced for a beginner. It'll show tune-up specs. It'll show your plug firing voltages and can easily pick out a bad cylinder. The spike will be high or too low. It's a All-in-one IF you understand the readings. I would've bought one instead of my Actron CP9690! The cost is a little bit higher. EBAY has it.

My high idle was coming from 2 places-after replacing my EGR Vacuum solenoid valve my idle lowered AND one of my exhaust manifold bolts had snapped thus causing an exhaust leak. The EGR solenoid was working but "lazy" as many sensors are want to do after years of service. Ford exhaust manifold bolts from the early 2000s are known to be of a poor quality, as are many of the Big 3 manufacturers. They can and do often break through the heating and cooling of normal engine operation.

Just bought a 2006 ranger from a christian pastor. He boasted about the new spray bedliner he just had installed 1 month before. And how he had them spray it extra thick. 3 weeks after buying it, needed to change the third brake light bulb. Bed felt extremely spongy when I climbed in. Turns out his extra thick bed liner was to hide the fact the floor was rusted out. After further checking, found numerous things that he doctored up to get it to sell. Now I have a spotless dent free super low mile pile of junk.

you dont need religion just understanding and treat people with love i dont need a god to teach me to love another human. i love myself and all human life but i will never worship as i was created a free man not a slave . if thier is a god that would punish me for not worshiping him instead of seeing that i am a loving human spirit than i rather suffer for what i believe than being forced to do something i do not believe..

    • @halfstep67
      @halfstep67 8 років тому +5

You won't find no greater love than Jesus willingly sacrificing His life for you so that you may inherit eternal life, You were born a slave to sin, sold under bondage.. Only through Jesus Christ can you find freedom. God is not going to punish you, you are willingly rejecting His FREE gift of eternal life. Your punishment is self inflective. God has never sent anyone to hell, people go to hell because they choose to. Your self-dependent good deeds is not satisfactory. But trusting in the finished work of the cross is satisfactory. Jesus did the work for you since you are incapable of doing it yourself. Trusting and believing in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ according to the scriptures is what is required to actually be saved and have real freedom.
