  • Whole Wheat rolls bread recipe. Soft and flaky when still warm, at room temperature will be slightly dry, great to serve with soup or make sandwiches.

    Whole Wheat Rolls
    260 grams Whole Wheat Flour
    125 grams Whole Purpose Flour
    7g Instant Yeast
    25 grams (2 tablespoons) Sugar
    3 g (1/2 teaspoon) salt, separated from the yeast.
    1 large egg, room temperature
    30 ml (2 tablespoons) oil
    300ml warm milk
    Butter:
    3 tablespoons softened butter
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, adjust
    1/2 teaspoon salt, adjust.

      Raymen soin, thank you so much. As usual, I didn't do window pane test methods, but you can do it if you want too. For a double recipe, yes.

    These rolls look so tempting. I've tried my hands on making buns but haven't had much success because I can't seem to knead enough to the point where it passes the window pane test. I would really love to know if kneading is required for this recipe. I read your written recipe and it doesn't say anything about kneading except that I need to shape the dough into a ball after the first proofing which I'm assuming is not much kneading involved. Would love to know how long you recommend I knead the dough after the first proofing. Thank you. I really hope you reply 😊

      @Annie Jim, thanks very much. Sorry to hear the failure, maybe you didn't really understand the recipe? I see you only focus on 'kneading' which is doesn't mention or instructed in this recipe.
      Of course, there is no kneading instruction because this recipe doesn't require kneading process, as you can see in the video. Please watch again the video. After proofing, it only needs to gather the dough to shape into ball. 😊

      Thank you, you can use flax seeds for this recipe. 1 tbsp of ground flax seeds + 3 tbsp of water. Mix well before mixing with the flour.

      Purvika Patel, you might try to use plain yogurt instead. Adjust the flour.

      Geetika, you may use less than the given recipe, actually, these rolls weren't sweet so you can use chocolate filling without reducing the sugar.

      Agnes Lee, for a large egg without a shell, is about 50 grams or 3 tbsp+1/2 tsp.

      3 tbsp butter = 42 grams

      2 tbsp water + 1/2 tsp oil + 1/2 tsp baking powder + 2 tbsp flour. Stir until combined and mix with other ingredients for the dough.

      N Faisal, yes this whole wheat homemade roll easily hard after a few hours. You might store in a freezer plastic bag and keep in the freezer, warm up in the oven again when you want to eat them.

      Hagar Osama, this recipe use wholewheat and all.purpose flour. You might replace the all-purpose flour in the recipe with the oat flour, please adjust the liquid since oat flour absorb more liquid.
