Since coming up with the 'internal moving bed filter' idea and posting videos on UA-cam years ago I have been constantly working on new ideas for filters - some worked some didn't but this one is a great one.
Here's another filter idea from Pondguru but this one is aimed at people who breed fish, have fish houses or highly stocked tanks.
Much of the time those multi-tank scenarios rely on foam filters driven by air which can be very noisy and offer limited processing of nitrate so therefore require large regular water changes.
With this design I have managed to create a filter which aerates water silently and has adjustable bubble size.
It offers effective mechanical and biological filtration and will reduce not only ammonia and nitrite but also NITRATE as it uses Biohome Ultimate which supports aerobic and anaerobic bacteria better than any other media.
The filter is washable and you can customise it to offer chemical filtration with addition of carbon or set it to condition the water by swapping out some media for a peat ball if you want lower pH.
The whole outer tube of the filter will attract detritus, algae etc. so will feed fry and shrimps.
The materials necessary for making your own filter available from

Thanks for the link. Those tubes look different but would probably do the same job I reckon. I've got a manufacturer in China who seems to make the exact one I used in this video but if I can't get them I will give these ones a go.
Pondguru great video mate..... what is the maximum size tank for that precise filter If I may ask?
Juan Vazquez I would guess at about 100 litres for a community tank.
Pondguru thank you..... now my only problem is, finding that pump in the US :(
Juan Vazquez Go for the Chinese made mate LOL It's cheap only 20$ give or take a couple of bucks ! Don't for get he is in the UK and there everything cost twice as much then here ! You know wora not water ! LOL
lol!... thank you
This is an amazing idea. Might give it a go in my Discus breeding tank. Thank you for sharing.
No worries, glad you like the idea and thanks for watching.
Okidoki thank you for all the help, your advice is invaluable 🙌🏻 and really appreciated cant wait for the end of the month! My little tank companions will be soooo happy!
I visited this guy just under 2 weeks ago and purchase 2 of these filters. The guy is a complete gent very helpful and this filter out performs my expectations, and has left me with crystal clear water. Thanks
That's great to hear and thanks for the good feedback. For clarity and health of water it really helped me realise something I'd hoped to achieve for many years - still can't believe that manufacturers don't integrate this sort of pump which properly oxygenates the water into their internal filter designs.
I like it! Another interesting diy solution filter. Does the tube come in black?
I will find that out an update in future videos. I didn't think to ask that but it would be better if it did.
Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos, man.
Awesome Video.when it's time for a waterchange you could attach a longer hose and use it for a pump out.
Yes it would do that job well for a smaller tank - good thought.
Mark's Ark Aquarium's Hello - will you explain that please? I'm totally new to these aquarium terms (got fish a few months ago) AND I'm Danish :-)
Ben Morgan No worries, man I'm glad you like the videos and are thinking about filtration as there are so many options available. When I came up with the idea years ago of using a bottle to make a moving bed filter I can't believe it is still going strong. Check out the 'invisible aquarium filter' video if you haven't seen that one yet.
Those angles are loving those wonderful bubbles of air. Great idea Richard.
That pump you are using! I have one just like it that came with a little table top water fountain that I use out on the lanai.
Great little pumps indeed.
Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos
Hi, I have been following you for some time. I used to breed fish, work for a fish store and now run a succesful fish group. But ive just setup an aquarium hints and tips youtube channel. I have several videos lined up for over the next few weeks. Some of them will be diy filters, some are my own design and some are based on some you have done. Of course ill never make claim to anything that is not mine and will tag and mention you in any of the ones I use if yours. One of the videos however will be looking at the different medias available and I would be interested in some of your biohome media, where would I go about purchasing some please? I would only need small amounts for video purpose. Look forward to hearing back from you :)
As far as replicating or developing any ideas go for it man - that's why I put them out there. Most channels don't bother referencing where the idea came from (including some very big ones, lol) so a mention is always nice.
Just email me with what you had in mind, any your address. If you're in the UK I can post some out FOC no worries.
pondguru@btinternet.com
Pondguru that would be brilliant thank you, have emailed you now :)
Anyone been able to find these pumps in the US? I was thinking about getting a canister filter, but after watching this, it seems as if this would be the way to go. I'm just hoping I can shave a little off the price.
Pondguru you are a mad scientist!! I love it. I subscribed long ago, but if I could I'd Sub again!!
You could try suppliers of hydroponics gear in the US as that is your most likely source for the pumps. Just remember if you order from Europe the pumps are 220v so you will need a plug in converter costing around $10
Ive spent quite some time searching for one of these in the us. No luck! Ive been searching on Chinese sites like alibaba which I think might be the best bet
I really like this video! Great job! I love how you say the word "About" like "Aboot" and the word "pump" like "poop". Love it!
I really like this idea Richard,i already use the biohome ultimate in my three filters and it is THE best filter media hands down, and i have been keeping and breeding fish for nearly 40 years...
I'm not making up anything when I state in my videos that there wasn't a good enough media available so I had to get one made - that's exactly what happened and I was fortunate to have that opportunity with a great manufacturer who knew exactly what I wanted to evolve from his existing products.
Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos
Great filter concept Richard, but Really, "Shredded Air"?
Cheers, Kevin
As the air is drawn in and chopped into tiny pieces thus forming various size bubbles I couldn't really think what else to call it but if you have a suggestion I would welcome it. Standard venturi on outlet of pump are simply air bubbles - one size only but this way they are chopped up. Better having shredded air in the tank than shredded paper or shredded wheat, lol
@@pondguru Atomised air!
I prefer shredded air over chopped air any day...
Just put on a propeller !!!!
Woody
love the idea! ive used this kinda idea only on a bigger scale, ive added an aquaponic setup to my tanks and now i only have to clean my tanks 2x a year! keep making videos !
+Kristina Woodmansee Sounds like a very good system so I'm glad its working well for you - thanks for watching the videos.
Love all your videos! My favourite ones to watch for aquariums and filtration. Thank you!
I'll be tempted to take this idea and run with it. Great filter design.
Glad you like the idea. I should be doing some more filtration videos soon.

I noticed another benefit is that you when changing filter media or whatever inserts you like inside, you could do each side one at a time. This keeps at least 50% of all the beneficial bacteria in the filter ready to colonize the another half when brand new stuff is inserted. Love the idea.
Yes that's a good point I had not considered. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Pondguru Outdoors Great video - but can I ask Please....? If I turn the air nob to "close", will the pump/filter still work? I have a 15 gl and sometimes I'd like to Not have all the bubbles...
Thank you for all the great
advice/videos.
Yes the pump will shift just as much water but with no air being mixed in so no worries there.
Pondguru Outdoors thank You very much for answering. Have a Great day
I've been looking for an idea for filtering a small 20 gallon tank and this look really awesome. The cogs are definitely turning now. Your channel has really help me set up my tank and keep it running well. I'm relatively new to the diy aquarium hobby but this seems like something I can definitely see myself doing for a while.
khenryhector Glad to be of service and thanks for enjoying the videos.
ADU Aquascaping Sounds great what you did and I love to hear about people experimenting with filtration - groovy.
Glad you like the idea, man.
I just got one of these from Pondguru and can happily report its been working great since I installed it 😀 thank you
That is great to hear - glad you're pleased with it.
Brilliant video. I made a canister filter for my turtle aquariums loosely based off of your model. I used 4" x 24" pvc pipe filled with media and sponge for filtration (I will add peat to the filter next cleaning). I used an external filter to draw the water from the tank, through the filtration, and back to the aquarium. Thanks for giving me a solid foundation to work with!
No worries, man. The principles of filtration are quite simple so I just love to throw them out there and enjoy it when people adopt some of it for their own filters. You'd be amazed how many of the big fish channels on UA-cam still have no idea about the right way to set up a filter, lol
hi, just rolling around ad came across your video and surprised to see a filter I made some 5 years ago here on your channel. I use and still use this system in some of my tanks and use a paint roller tube. I didn't chop my power lead connector off but just made the hole bigger and then wrapped wool around the opening which turned into a nesting ball. ....Good to see someone else looking out side the box and great video...
Great to hear that you made a similar tube filter before I put this video up - groovy.
Its a great idea where do you get the part that the pump fits into? I tryed a water filter but my powerhead was to big to fit in.
I was sent the tube by a guy called Wes but the company he got it from 20 years go has closed down. Still trying to track down supplier who makes similar product.
Another brilliant idea from the pondguru & Wes of course for the tube, I will have to try this as I have shrimp & pleco's :)
I believe your filter is by far the best that I have seen. Your friend gave you the foundation to put it into a very good idea. I am having problems finding the white poly tubes here in Florida,USA I have also looked for the small pumps themselves and I cannot find them. I have plecos, shrimps and royal plecos that would benefit from your filter.
You may find the pumps from suppliers of hydroponics gear but the tubes are proving difficult to buy at anything less than 100 at a time and the damn companies won't send a sample out.
Good to see you back in the groove with innovative ideas for the home aquarium.
Yeah, I have put a few fishy videos out lately. Next one will be completely different but I'm trying to do one for each of the topics my channel covers every few weeks. Really enjoyed filming the last one.
nice :) I have this filter already and have recently got back into my favourite past time, I will now fully utilise the bad boy cheers bro!!
Bastante interessante este tipo de filtro mecânico!!!
love this filter idea :) going to give it a try i built a moving bed filter from your old videos, for one of my community tanks, built into an under gravel filter system, will make a video to show you as its owning my other tanks on water clarity and only been running a short wile:) very happy man :)
Sounds groovy so feel free to post the link into the comments section, no worries.
Aye! I love this filter! I have a tank with large gold fish, red eared slider turtle, and a pleco... Yep, it's a constant chore to keep it clean. I believe when I add this with just the coarse, medium, and fine foams, it will handle keeping the water clear. The other two filters can then keep the water healthy. Thank you!
I think you'd be better off with a large external filter if you have those creatures in the tank as they are all high polluters.
That's a very cool filter. It can even be use on a smaller tank by making it half the size and only using it vertically. Thanks for sharing.
Yes making it vertical would be no problem. Glad you enjoyed the idea.
What an awesome filter. I need this now. Can’t wait to try and make one......no fry or shrimps but may very well do soon. Looks great. Hope you copyright it.
Brilliant man just great. I stumbled across your channel a couple of days ago via The Rick's. Your vids are funny, interesting and a little bit inspiring. I'd given up thinking too hard about filtration options, now I find myself day dreaming at work about making a moving bed filter, various uses for that great pump not to mention electrofishing :)
I'm using paint power paint roller to have holes that go through in both my 20s and my 75 gal tanks and they work great thanks for the information about filters
Sounds good to me, man.
Where did you source the polyester tubing from ? I cant find it anywhere and what would be a decent alternative ?
Cheers for any help !
brilliant idea my friend. absolutely perfect, just what i was looking for. thank you
No worries, glad you appreciate the idea.
thnx mate!! loved the vid! going to look for the tube in holland ;) hope i can find it!
Great idea and great invention well done.
Brilliant filter idea!
The bit about changing the internal pieces to sort out whatever the need is makes it have some very widespread potential applications. Have you found a source for the tubes yet? It might be interesting to try this in my aquaponic garden ...
Thanks for sharing with the community, I'll let you know if I give it a try!
That sounds groovy.
I do have a source in China and I am waiting to hear about price and minimum order size.
Top Video! - Gets the message across too! - Not to sure about the huge size of the filter but it seems very effective and thats what it's all about!
+Nigel Gregory Yes it is quite large but every part of it is useful. Even the tube will be grazed by plecs and shrimps.
Thanks for watching.
Woody's Discus
GREAT Idea, Richard. Very customizable as well. Put it in back of some driftwood and plants, it will disappear once the algae covers it. Add some filter floss as well. a lot you can do with it...Once the algae covers the filter my Discus will be all over it, then I can feed once a day !!!!
Thanks for sharing !!!!!
Woody
I was very excited when I came up with this idea so I'm glad you like it, man. It's very much function over form but every part of the filter is useful which you don't see every day.
Thats nice i want one on my tank.
Richard thanks for sharing this one.
No worries, I really enjoyed coming up with this idea so I'm glad you appreciated it.
Amazing idea, truly, i was thinking of something DIY envolving an array of volvic bottles etc but it turns out simplicity is the best best route, ill be making this exact filter to backup my exsisting hydor crystal duo. Thanks!!
No worries - I'm sure there are loads of ways this could be enlarged or improved but the key thing is getting the pump which will draw air in before (not after) the impeller as that makes all the difference to how well it oxygenates the water.
Great idea i love this, how much water do you think it can filter or what size tank could you use this in ?
This one probably up to 100 litres.
I use those pumps for power heads in my planted tank ! I love em!
Very nice filter good stuff right there
Awesome video mate, many thanks
If just using that pump, it's much quieter if you wrap foam around the water intakes and let it hang against the side of the tank (soaks up the vibrations) instead of using the suckers. Stops small fish getting sucked in too.
Also find it makes a lot more very small bubbles (as well as the big ones) when the air intake is is fully open. But it's noisy fully open - the noise comes out of the air pipe.
Cheers for the helpful videos mate.
Pondguru, I never cease to be amazed by the crackpot filter ideas you have.
lol, glad you enjoy the videos, man.
where did you get the polyester tube from?
Glad to see a new aquarium video. I thought you'd given up on aquaria and ponds and only did metal detecting videos now.
I have given up making ponds as I work online from home now but there will be plenty of filtration related videos coming in next few months, no worries.
Great idea. I love it thanks
what sort of size aquarium would that specific model support?
cool idea. may apply it in my new fish room. Thanks for sharing!!
Marion Illies No worries - I have 100 tubes arriving from China in next 2 weeks and also smaller tubes which will allow multiple filters to be joined together.
What was the name of the filter media? I cannot link into the website you posted from US.
What Brand is the filter/pump I need to know desperatly!
nice videos. cool ideas. whats the name of the pump and where can i get one thanks.
where did you get your air pump
great idea...... love that filter
Hey mate, so if I do like filter I can bin it my fluval? ???
Assuming that the filter is big enough to cope with the bio-load from the fish stock then yes.
Pondguru
Ok! Thanks a lot! mate!!!! You have my sub keep going with videos they helps a lot!!!
Looks awesome
hi were can i purchase all the bits from for this filter and what size of tank i have a jewel 180 with 1 oscar and 1 pleck in it can you help regards simon
I wouldn't bother making a filter like this for a tank with heavy filtering requirements as although it will help towards keeping water healthy it is nowhere near what you need for a 180 litre tank with oscar. Ideally you need around 4kg of media and an external filter like an Aqua One Aquis 1250 to hold it.
OK I have been won over brilliant idea just been to your website and I think the price is well cheap. Guess what I will be buying come pay day. Thank You
It seems brilliant. I am going to get one
Soooooo….. how DO you attach a new plug on there now that you've cut that one off? And attach the spray nozzle? I love fine bubble walls.
Is this a trick question?
Wow...wish i had thought of that first. Good job!!!
Richard, Im using a fluval 2 plus. I have to clean it about every two weeks, my tank is 90 litres, I have a great stock of fish that have been happy for years. How often does your design need to be cleaned?
Great video. Love the idea. Keep up the good work. 👍👍👍👍
Great video
Where can i buy the tube cant find it
Thanks for the reply. I ordered the filter kit and the converter.
Sounds good to me, thanks very much.
Thank you fella keep up the good vids mate really enjoy then now for last few years
sam harlowe Glad you enjoy them. It will be difficult for me to make videos on indoor aquatics as I don't keep indoor fish and have closed my shop but I love making videos on every hobby I have.
Beautiful Idea!!!
Where can I find a pump like this??
Seems like most of the pumps out there have an air intake at the water exit, while the pump here has an intake before the propellor...
I like this idea for my turtles /fish tank. I so enjoy your great info.
What type of water pump is that ? Brand name? I cant seem to find one specifically with the air line before the impeller
Great idea!!! Love your channel and all the great information.
+lapondman Glad you enjoy the videos I just wish I got time to make more videos as there is so much bum information and regurgitated nonsense on UA-cam.
Richard awesome vid im going to make you something along these lines when i get home im coming to your shop soon to witness the magic in person
Hopefully I can get the components and put them out worldwide and it's looking good for that. Glad you like the idea, man.
I have a few for other filter s too so I will roll them out over next weeks or months depending on what my schedule is like, lol
please can you tell me where you can buy pollyester tube I have looked every were
thanks mike
Unfortunately I can't find a source for the tubes yet but when I do I will be shouting from the rooftops. It would be a real bummer if this filter never progressed beyond the prototype stage.
Those tiny bubbles are so satisfying to see. Great aeration. It's really weird that those pumps are not more common.
Not sure why they aren't used in aquatics but maybe nobody has realised the potential for DIY filters yet.
Hopefully this video will make plenty of people think more about good filtration.
Fantastic idea Richard!
Glad you enjoy the idea, man. Can't wait to make the materials available for people who want to make their own filter as it will be great to see the variations and different applications they come up with.
Great video that, I have just come back to the hobby after a few years out and that is a genius idea. One I will try out for myself Cheers Dude.
No worries, glad you like the idea. Latest aquarium related video I put out has an awesome trickle filer which may be worth considering too if the tank is a decent size.
What's the maximum capacity of a tank that this filter and pump can handle?
As far as full cycle filtration goes (reduction in nitrate) it would be suitable as the sole filter for a 50 litre (heavily stocked) to 100 litre (normally stocked) tank.
sure is smart idea .you invented something that will be on the shops soon.nice one
Nice man! I like the design. Those polyester tubes could make a ton of different column filters... I need to get my hands on some! Ill be keeping my eye out on your eBay page.
Hopefully they won't be silly prices as they really could have a variety of uses in an aquarium. I'm trying to get the pumps in bulk at a reasonable price too as they are very special.
Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos, man.
Nicely done, I've done something similar using the bag media bags, but polyester cylinder is amazing. I think you should just have one opening with more layers of sponges larger sizes.
Excellent as always Richard well done matey
+Captain Scarlet DX No worries, glad you enjoyed the video.
Do you have a list of parts
I can order to make one
This is a great idea.
Have to check the availability of the materials required.
Great video!! Does this filter good for outdoor little pond as well?
איתמר כוכבי No reason why not, yes.
What is a good filter to put this media in I have a 10 gallon tank I was looking at fluval 106 here so say it leaves
Not sure I understand the last part of that sentence as it looks like part is missing. Best media for aquarium filters is biohome. In this one I used Biohome ultimate.
great idea
Oh wow, can anyone ever stop the great ideas this man has? I think not lol!!! All in agreement say "Aye"! LOL. Great idea. I'm going to share the heck out of it. Thanks to Wes as well.
Glad you like the idea and thanks for appreciating the video.
Thanks for sharing :)
Aye!
awesome idea!!!! I'm always hunting quiet filter ideas for my Bettas.
hi there mate if you don't mind where did you get your fish and aquatic products from when you had your shop thanks.
+lee young We used a variety of different ones but it is a minefield getting good stock for the shelves and also the tanks. I have a list written out of all the suppliers with contact details which I was going to give to someone who was going to buy the remaining stock (but never did) so I can dig that out for you if you want it. Just give me a ring on 07772848730 between 9-5 weekdays or send me an email to pondguru@btinternet.com
Where are you based? I still have some good stock which I am selling at a price where you'd get over 70% margin on it.
Great idea! I'm heading to the store to look at pumps now. I'll keep my eyes open for a similar tube material.
If you find something let me know. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching.
We're did u get it
This is a great idea, I just ordered some bio home ultimate and this would be great to put it in. Please let me know where to get a sleeve like that. And also the brand of that pump.
Pump link in video description and unfortunately I do not have a source for tubes yet.
can you use internal filter as well has using external filter in same tank?
Yes that won't be a problem
simple pero funcional... Great idea!!!
Very cool.. I will try it.. so we just need to find a pump that's able to control the air output?
It can be driven with an air pump or water pump or a pump like the one in this video.
