    Biohome filter media supports both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria so is able to process ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate.
    The gel filter starter balls speed up the development of a bacterial colony on / in filter media by slowly releasing live bacteria as they dissolve over a 1-2 week period.

    Great video again, we live in Indonesia and have made moving beds from 2ltr bottle with cut up drinking staws and a few marbles at the bottom, saved our fish recently when pump failed for weeks:-)

    Thanks for the video, I began using the biomotion spheres for almost 6 months in my moving bed filter, not near the amount of motion you are showing, more friction to decrease the spheres from breaking. I have had excellent results and love the product but was already a fan since I use the biohome in my cannister filter. Keep up the great work. Thanks

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 років тому

      I had the pump turned up way too much in this video and it is definitely best to either get the biomotion going in a cyclical motion of have minimal movement as you say Glad it is working well for you as it has way more surface area than any plastic media ever could.

    I learn so much from your channel it's not funny!
    I only graduated to canister filtration this year and you had the best "plain language" explanation as well as demonstration of how to set one up. Now I've learned something else... I have never (honestly!) seen a moving bed filter like this even after having worked in a pet shop decades ago.
    Granted - undergravel filters were 'top of the line' back then but still... this idea is so simple and I can immediately see how effective it would be. Amazing the amount of agitation in that filter with such a low volume of air driving the system! This can be done for the cost of a cheap air pump, some hose and a 2-liter bottle from the trashcan! Plastic media can be bought or made from pvc and plastic scraps. Simply a wonderful, and in retrospect, obvious way to help keep a tank's water darn near perfect!

    This video has been really informative! I have been toying with the idea of and overhead sump made from a 3ft window planter but was undecided on what media to use, after watching this I do believe I shall be using biomotion for bother the moving bed and static bed sections of the sump, so thank you very much for this video :)

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      No worries - glad you enjoyed the video. The one I did around the same time about the nitrogen cycle and filter media would probably have been more use for an overhead filter as the best media choice for that would be either biohome mini ultra or the biohome ultimate (both use static). I have been keeping fish since I was a child (mom told me about having a fish tank even in my nursery that my uncle setup and would bring a bag of fish when he would visit) even worked in a pet shop running their fresh, brackish and saltwater when I was a young man so I can say that your ideas regarding filtration design is just amazing. Your simple DIY projects are outstanding in their functionality and no doubt outperform some of the best brands. Thanks for sharing them with us. *** I am trying to get hold of the Biohome Plus Media (since it is the smallest) and Filter Starter Balls for a HOB Aquarclear 70. Mr Chamberlain has prompt and helpful but he is awaiting another shipment of the Biohome Plus Media .

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      +Walter Crews Dear Walter,
      Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you enjoy the videos.
      If Don is out of the biohome plus you could try the biogravel as it fits into the HOB filters extremely well and will offer the most available surface area per volume because of its small size.
      You would need a fine mesh bag to put it in like this type (but maybe smaller): www.amazon.co.uk/20pcs-Drawstring-Filter-Aquarium-Garden/dp/B016W7HL3I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462171454&sr=8-1&keywords=aquarium+filter+bag
      The shipping from UK to US can be prohibitive due to the media weight and shipping charges.
      Hope that helps.
      Regards,
      Richard

    Great video as usual Richard. I received some of the bio home balls and some of the big big bio home today. Haven't decided where to put them as my moving bed with K1 is just starting to mature. I guess that could be a good excuse to tell the budget keeper why I need another tank. LOL
    Thank you sir

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 років тому

      Just out them anywhere in the filter and they will seed all the media with good bacteria. If they are in with K1 they will help to build up a bacterial layer on the media allowing it to move more freely through the water.

    Greetings from Finland and thank you for your lovely videos, I came back and back again to watch them to get knowledge from filters. I have been planning to set up an external moving bed filter (in a cannister, not a sump) and connect the outflow to aquaponic trickle filter. I want to raise some houseplants above the aquarium, maybe someday turn it to vivarium! Would it work, to connect the moving bed filter to aquaponics? What would happen to nitrites? What media would work the best in this setup?

    Iam emailing u let u know I have built the moving bed filter it's been almost a week. and the 90 % of the k1 micro media has started to move in a clock wise motion . So as u told us this filter will help in the spikes of bacteria and nitrates so iam hopeful this will help me . In my tanks iam trying it in my 29 gallon tank . So again u are my hero and thanks from all the ones who don't know these things as you do. Thanks pond guru guy

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      Great I'm glad that it is starting to move properly. Once it has moved well for a couple of weeks try moving the air inlet so air travels up the middle of the filter and the media will move in a more chaotic way. It will bash together more that way and be more effective.
      Glad you enjoy the videos as I love making them - just wish I got more time for filming.

    • @razarsixfour4635
      @razarsixfour4635 8 років тому

      Thanks again ive added the bacteria balls and moved the air to the middle of the bottle its moving a little slow if u think its better to speed it up I can the air flow I mean

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      It will move faster as the media matures so I would personally leave it but if you want to get it moving faster and can turn up the air pump then go for it. As it matures you can reduce the air flow.

      Andries Nortje Aaarrgh.....delivery to South Africa is a crazy price - £750 as I can't find a pallet carrier who delivers to S Africa. That is with international carrier by air (3-4 day service) and although quick is very expensive. 400 litres of K1 micro media would be £720 so that would take total to £1470 delivered which is a rare old chunk of cash. Doable but very expensive.

I have a few questions about how to adjust the size of the filter or the number of filters to the size of the aquarium and also the amount of necessary media. I am planning an aquarium of about 350 liters, 2 pairs of discus, and two pairs of angel fish. And another group of small fish.Thank you.l am going to it diy way.I am going to use 2 liters plastic bottles.

      (my other channel) A moving bed really only processes ammonia and nitrite and it produces a nation of nitrate. That's good for the plants and as long as you have plenty of plants the water should be fine. Ideally you'd aim for 1 litre of moving bed media per 100 litres but a moving bed is only part of a filter system. If you can add more then it's all good.

    • @pondguru

      They are as good as foams, ceramic rings and other material where all the surface area is external and will easily hold enough aerobc bacteria to ensure that ammonia and nitrite is processed (as long as the filter is large enough / enough 'media' is used) - however, a good lava rock would be better as far as surface area goes if you're looking for a DIY option for filter media.

    I am so glad I watched this before I bought the K1! I was getting the stuff together to make one of these. The last thing I need is more Nitrates and more water changes.
    Why does this produce nitrates?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      Plastic media of any type in motion or not lacks the structure necessary for supporting anything other than aerobic strains of bacteria, therefore the moving beds tend to be good for the aerobic side reducing ammonia and nitrite but the end product of that process is nitrate.
      Ideally you would have a moving bed followed by a static bed of good media like biohome ultra / maxi ultimate if you were using it in a sump or if it was a pond situation the moving bed outlet would go to a static bed box or shower filter filled with 30mm-50mm white pumice, biohome ultra / maxi ultimate or the new shower media we're making which packs in really nicely for a shower filter.

      Thank you for getting back to me. This is for a tank that I am not sure will even have fish in it. The tank is a floating plant tank only so I can sell the plants but, I have tried this before and the plants always die. I have an established fish tank where they plants start out and they do very well in there. I wanted to transfer the plants once they get some good roots. I was told that I probably do not have enough nitrates for the plants to feed on and that I may have to get some fish or feed the empty tank. I am not going to feed an empty tank so I might have to put fish in it. Because of this, I want the tank cycled. I was going to do this DIY with the Kaldness media and have a spong in that plant tank.

    Pondguru Loved this video, as I do all your others. I have a question, which media would you advise for use in a Discus Tank? Also, would my HOB filter (Rammed pack with Ceramic Bio rings) be considered a static filter? I would love to hear your thoughts on this, I just want the best for my discus and their tank mates. Great video with loads of great information, well done my friend.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 років тому +2

      Maurice McComie A HOB filter with ceramic rings is definitely a static bed filter as the ceramic rings are way too heavy to move unless you have crazy amount of air injected then they will smash to pieces. The biohome mini ultra or ultimate medias will outperform even the best ceramic rings many times over but a HOB isn't perfect for altering since it relies on cartridge system. An external filter is way better for a large tank which I'm assuming you have as you keep discus.

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie 9 років тому

      Pondguru thanks for the response. I'll definitely have a look at improving my filtration. I have 2 whisper 60 hobs on my tank with ceramics and in addition I have 3 large sponge filters that I've fit ceramics into the outlet, so all the air from the sponge filters flow over those ceramics. The ceramics in the hob just get the steady flow of water over them. It's worked well for me so far, but I'm looking for an upgrade.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 років тому +1

      Maurice McComie Most filtration issues begin and end with the media so that's the best place to start. As long as good media is well protected by layered foams and a fine particle pad / floss it will be sweet.

    • @pondguru

    • @pondguru

      Making a moving bed is a decent idea for a planted tank as they only do half the biological job - they are all anaerobic so you get good processing of ammonia and nitrite and plenty of nitrate produced with no anaerobic process to remove that (so it is food for plants),

    • @pondguru

      D. Aware The structure of biohome allows for anaerobic zones even in a heavy oxygenated flow so it does great in shower systems. The larger forms of media do best in really heavy flow but smaller ones like mini ultra and ultimate do fine in moderate flow.

    Hi Pond Guru, I have a question about this video. When you show the blue dyed moving bed filter, and the speed at witch it moves, you tell everybody that it goes befor a static bed filter. Thus the nitrates produced by the moving bed, are handled in the next static chamber. Now I have a 2 chamber filter, with pre vortex. And I have the first chamber static, and the second ( last ) chamber is K1 and K1 micro. About 50 liters with a airflow of about 2000 liters/hour or 500 gallons. It works great, but if I hear you correctly it should be reversed for better biological filtration ? Thanks for all the great vids, regards from Holland :) ( 2500 gallon pond )

    My PH always go back to 4-5
    I have to add baking soda to bring the ph up..
    Also ammonia level always high . I think I have had an algae crash. I have added beneficial bacteria but it has taken too long to establish.
    How do I keep PH and Ammonia level at stable? Thank you

    Do you have to use air to tumble the media or can you just use water pumps? Thanks for the nice video

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      It is best to use air as the system relies on a highly oxygenated environment to work well. However aquarium water pumps will often have a venturi fitted on the outlet which allows them to drag air in and spit out a water / air mix which works fine to drive a moving bed filter.

      A moving bed needs to run 24/7 to be effective and having it coming on and off may seriously mess with the oxygen / CO2 balance in the water which would be no good for the fish.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 років тому

      Paolo Romantini Maybe there is too much in the restricted space or the air injection needs to be moved to one side to get the media moving. Definitely worth moving the inlet to one side of the container and getting a cycling motion going. The hel-x should operate at about a 50% fill but often needs the air up one side as it is larger than K1 and huge compared to K1 micro. Larger media is more difficult to get moving right in small spaces.

    Biohome ultimate (or plus) vs biohome maxi size question..
    Am I right in thinking that if smaller pieces of biohome have a larger surface area, they will support more aerobic bacteria, but larger pieces with a lower surface area to volume ratio will be able to support slightly more anaerobic bacteria, as more of the volume of the media will be in the middle, as opposed to at the edges. Worth including both in my filter at once, or is the smaller media better because I will ultimately be able to fit more in due to smaller size - fewer gaps?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 років тому

      They seem to perform the same and when there is no ammonia, nitrite or nitrate it is difficult to say which media is best, lol
      If you have an external canister filter the ordinary size ultimate is the best as it fits in more efficiently but for a sump the larger size is betteras you can fill more space for the same cost.

      +Cody Medina K3 media is huge and better suited to large pond filters. You would be better off with K1 or ideally the new K1 micro. They will all take time to move and you should start with about a 25% fill until the bed moves well then add more as it moves freely.

      Fernando Miller Not really a chart since a moving bed filter is only one part of an aquarium filter, you also need mechanical filtration (as in 'how to' video link) and ideally a static part of filter which will remove nitrates. I don't consider myself an expert in anything but I do have areas of specialist knowledge. The dicolouration is good and will be a bacterial film building up. Really the darker it is the more mature it will be and eventually it will be brown / black depending on how much light it is getting. The green could be algae but more likely an organic film which will darken in time as it matures.

      It depends on the size of the moving bed, placement of air outlet and shape of the container used for the filter.
      20 g.p.h would be plenty for the moving bed at the start of this video but if there is too much media in to start with it will take an age to move. Try putting the air outlet at one side of the filter so the media moves in a cyclical motion and if it will still not move take some media out until the remaining media moves well then add more media every few days until the maximum stock of media is reached.

    • @pondguru

      Yes but producing small pieces of rough plastic which last a long time is very expensive. Plastic has no useful internal structure like ceramic or sintered glass media so will never come close to supporting as much bacteria but a moving bed does have the advantage of supporting very hardy bacteria which hammer the ammonia and nitrite (although they produce a load of nitrate).

    hi Chis, Ciprian here with a question if I may, why can b used dynamic (balls) and static (sticks) filtration medium and, more than that what is the big difference between this 2 (how the motion or no motion due the work)?
    all my gratitude for ur work u do here, learning us about this fantastic 'world'

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      +cip scu Not sure I understand the question entirely but the main difference between a moving and static bed is that a moving bed never needs maintaining as it is self cleaning. The moving bed can produce quite a lot of nitrate but is very effective at quickly processing ammonia and nitrite. A static bed is really only as good as the media used in it as it relies entirely on a good balance of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to complete the nitrogen cycle (reduce ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate) and very few filter media types are good enough to support enough anaerobic bacteria to reduce nitrate. Biohome is the most effective.

    • @cipscu3668
      @cipscu3668 8 років тому

      cheers Chris, I were asking how this effect of moving is contribute to growing bacteria (there are a different species of bacteria working only in motion, dynamic environment comparing with static one?)

    • @cipscu3668
      @cipscu3668 8 років тому

      also, another question is about carbon medium used in filtration, this is working as a chemical filtration only?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      +cip scu The moving beds tend to favor the aerobic strains of bacteria as it is a highly oxygenated environment with limited surface area for colonisation. That results in production of nitrates.
      With regard to carbon yes it is almost entirely a chemical filtration product as although it has an incredibly porous structure the holes through it are so tiny they draw in pollutants from water then get rapidly clogged (hence the need to change it every 7-8 weeks).
      Proper biological filter media should stay in the filter for many years.

      If it is the scoria (reddish brown lava rock then it is decent but lacks the structure to support much anaerobic bacteria so you get the same results - reduction in ammonia and nitrite with high nitrates.

    • @pondguru

      It would depend how much was used and in what situation but given that both types of media are really only capable of supporting aerobic bacteria the end result would be good reduction in ammonia and nitrite but high nitrate due to the media's lack of anaerobic bacteria to process the nitrate (meaning you'd keep the nitrate down by doing regular water changes).

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      +paul nguyen Complete colonisation would include anaerobic bacteria and that can take many years (when the K1 gets really coloured up inside by a thick biofilm) but for the aerobic bacteria which controls ammonia and nitrite it usually takes 5-6 months in a pond environment and 4-5 months in an aquarium environment where water is warmer - even then the time can vary wildly.

    Hey man just watching a few of your videos and one in particular you talk about how you need roughly 1kg of static media per 100litres of water at general stock levels, how would you compare moving media's to that? Will you be able to do a complete cycle?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому +2

      With the biomotion I showed in this video it was possible to achieve a full cycle in a moving bed but the manufacture of it was so difficult, messy and time consuming that we had to drop that from our product line unfortunately. We were going to keep it up but the manufacture uses the same machinery as the biogravel so a 2 hour clean up of machinery every time we pt a batch of biomotion through was time wasted when it could have been turning media out.
      Sorry, a bit more information than you probably needed there but the summary would be that there are no types of moving bed media available now which do anything other than the aerobic side of the cycle (for ammonia and nitrite removal) - they may do that very well but you will still need a static bed of suitably porous media after that to allow for the last stage of cycle, anaerobic for nitrate removal.

      @@pondguru never too much info, thanks for that. Would it be more efficient to use another media in a moving bed and then have static media to complete the cycle or just use static and have a good mechanical filter before hand so you don't have to maintain the bio filter as much?

      Once a moving bed is mature (which can take up to 6 months with plastic media) it will do a great job of removing ammonia and nitrite very quickly but really you'd only employ a moving bed plus a static bed in a sump where there is plenty of available space. In a 'normal' set up you can easily achieve a full cycle simply by using an appropriate amount of good media and a well-sized, properly set up filter. As long as you have good mechanical filtration before good porous media there is no 'need' for a moving bed but in sumps some people will have a highly oxygenated moving bed followed by a slow flow area of porous media so they can imagine that each section does a certain stage of the cycle.

      OK awesome thanks a bunch, definetly earned my subscription though I wish I had seen this before production ended.

    How much K1 Micro (in gm) needed for a 1.5lt and 2lt bottle?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 років тому

      It would be around 1 litre for the 1.5 litre bottle and 1.5 litres for the 2 litre bottle but it depends on the shape of the bottle.

      Awesome location and Japan could well hold great finds as it will have hardly been touched - best of luck out there, man.

    Im in Australia and have had trouble getting BIO MOTION is there any online stores that ship to aus??

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 років тому

      I ship worldwide (link in video description) but shipping can be a killer to AU.
      Have you tried the AU supplier of biohome? They should have all types in stock and the link to their site is on every page of my website (AU flag at top right of page).
      Hope that helps.

      +Pondguru Outdoors i just checked the aus suplier and emailed them but doesnt say they have any on the onilne store

      They may not have any as the mini ultra, ultimate / marine and ultra outsell the biomotion by a huge amount. However he may have a limited amount available so hopefully a reply to your email will be positive.

    Can you use biomotion with k1

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      Yes it could be used with any plastic media but we don't make the biomotion any more as people reported it was noisy when used indoors. Also it was a very messy and time consuming process to make it which used the same machinery as the new biogravel and shower media so it was taking as long to clean the machinery as it was to make the mix up.

      Probably not but that would be the next logical step and would be awesome.
