      @Shresth Jakhwal I haven't really had any issues. It's been pretty reliable. I've been through about two sets of toner cartridges so far. No issues to really report other than maybe when you scan things, you gotta make sure that the paper is pretty straight and tight in the feeder. I think that the software that comes with the computer, HP Smart, is pretty useful and well-thought-out. In addition the print to computer from your mobile device is great as well. I think it's really well done. You would be happy with it. Keep in mind that I run a very small office of about two people.

    Yes, thank you for this rare genuine and intelligent review.

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  4 роки тому +1

      I guess it depends on your definition of reasonable. Yes, it can print color on glossy paper. If you're a photographer and want high-quality gallery prints, then I would say the quality isn't quite reasonable enough. Photos at home for personal mementos, probably fine. If you're printing a graphic for a school project or graphs on handouts for a work presentation then yes, I would say the quality is "reasonable." If you're printing advertising for a business, it's a toss-up depending if you're okay with a small-budget printing presentation style or are going for something more professional for higher-end customers.

      Hello, are you still satisfied with your hp479fdw? My old inkjet printer is now KO, so I have to buy a new one. For sure I will never ever buy an inkjet from Canon again. I will buy a laser printer and I’m thinking also to buy the hp479 or the brother Mfc 3750... Unfortunately I’m very unsure, which one should I buy...
      HP479fdw: the price is relatively stable, around 380 EUR, but there are a lot of complaints regarding the poor scan performance (the Brother is much better here) and that the scanned images are crooked... additionally the print quality is “only” 600x600dpi, which is not too much for such a price (the Brother has 2400x600dpi), and the biggest issue is, the original toner cartridges are approx 5x more expensive as the ones from Brother. It’s insane what HP is doing, what a crazy price they want for new cartridges.
      Brother MFC3750 cdw (or 3770cdw): has (at least on the technical description) higher scan and print quality, and a much cheaper (5 times cheaper) toner, but the price of this printer are currently on the maximum, are almost more so expensive as it was on the release date... no idea why the Brother printer are raising on price, the HP are dropping in price... very strange.
      So, it’s a big dilemma what to do... That’s why the question: what are the experiences with these printers.
      Thank you.

You spoke great english, you didn't sound like the broken english east indian guys on here, this video wasn't robotic voiced, I clearly understood what you said about everything, this printer does look nice and it looks like the end-all-be-all of printing. I wish you did have more time to review the extras you couldn't. Not sure why you didn't have time I mean this is youtube. lol If it's because of uploading time size, you have to verify your account if you want longer videos. It's free. I don't know why youtube requires you to do that extra step, but all you do is verify your account that it's your account and you get to have longer uploads.

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  4 роки тому

      You're welcome! And thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it. With complex products like these, it's easy to go on and on about features and demonstrating each one and that can lead to very long videos, which is just not my style. So I try and pick a happy medium where I can distill the explanation down to the core features and hit on some important and interesting points that I think most folks might be looking for or interested to learn without missing the basic "just the facts" info as well. I know there's probably a whole lot more I could've talked about about and 9 minutes might seem too short for some (or too long for others) but the real-world time it takes to produce and edit these videos is measured in hours and days, and that's where I need to make my editorial decision to continue to spend more time on one video or wrap it up and cover other products.

    That's been a great and really helpful review. Thank you Phil! One question, however, that is neither answered by the HP marketing stuff nor in your video: Does the Printer have full WiFi connectivity, meaning, does it fully integrate into a network with WiFi or do I need a cable to the Switch or Router? Or is the WiFi only for Direct Mobile Printing?

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  4 роки тому +5

      Yes, it is "full" WiFi - your router DHCP server will assign the printer its own IP address. No cable is required to be connected to a switch or router. The only wire required is the power cable! See 3:48 for a quick demo how to setup the printer on your WiFi network.
      The WiFi can *also* be used for direct mobile printing, though only one of these connection types is allowed at a time e.g. If you are connected to a phone for direct mobile printing, the printer will be disconnected from your primary WiFi network and vice versa.

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  4 роки тому +2

      Hi, the flat bed max size is just a little bit longer than A4 paper so won't accommodate a full legal size sheet, however, the ADF feed tray on top will be able to scan legal paper, even if it's just 1 side of 1 sheet. You can customize and choose the size and number of sides in the copy menu on the LCD panel.

    Thanks Phil for the excellent review of the printer. I have recently got one and am pleased with its functions. Would you be able to throw some light as to how we can print smaller documents such as a cheque or visiting cards etc.?

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  Рік тому

      Yes, smaller media like cards or specific sized photo paper can be loaded into the front opening feed tray shown at 1:15 and adjusting its width as shown at 1:18. Then in your document application (like Microsoft Word) in the print dialogue you have to specify the tray, paper type, and paper size prior to printing.

    Great review. Two questions:
    1. What types of paper/ documents can you load into the printer. Labels, envelopes, brochures, glossy matte, photo paper?
    2. Can you scan directly to cloud accounts like box, dropbox, Google drive?

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  5 років тому

      1. There are many different paper types this printer accepts. Note that some paper sizes/types must be loaded in particular trays. Here is the paper/tray types and compatibility according to the specs:
      Media types: Paper (bond, brochure, colored, glossy, letterhead, photo, plain, pre-printed, pre-punched, recycled, rough), postcards, labels, envelopes, cardstock up to 110lb
      Media Sizes:
      Tray 1, Tray 2, Tray 3 (optional): A4, A5, A6, B5, B6, 16K, 10 x 15 cm, Oficio, postcards (JIS single, JIS double), envelopes (DL, C5, B5)
      Automatic duplexer: A4, B5, 16K, Oficio
      2. No, the options for Scan To are limited to: USB Drive, Network Folder, E-mail, Computer, or SharePoint. I suppose you might be able to setup DropBox or OneDrive as a network folder and scan to it that way, but I'm not sure exactly the steps you'd need to go through to do that.

    I loved the review, i do have 2 questions.
    1. I am looking for a printer where i can fill a separate tray for label paper, normal printer paper and envelopes. Will this printer allow me to have a feed for all 3 without having to constantly swap out existing paper in the tray?
    2. Can i use the multi-page copy that's on the top to copy to email? It's always tedious when i have to scan 1 page at a time when i'm trying to make digital copies, so if if i can feed a multi-page document and copy as a pdf right to my PC or email would be a very welcome feature.

      @Habtom Tekle Hi Habtom! Thanks for the feedback. I included this information briefly at 8:21 in the video, so you may have missed it. The black cartridge is good for about 2400 pages of prints and the color cartridges about 2100 pages each. The cost per print averages out to about 3-4 cents per page, so you can do the math. I generally don't talk about price in my videos because they fluctuate a lot, may be higher or lower depending on the time of year, and just become out-of-date over time as new products replace old ones.

    Since they are on sale, I've been trying to decide between this HP M479 ($399) and the Canon MF644 ($299) or MF743 ($364). All have pretty similar features. Would like to know which one does best with photos (but I do have a 6-color Epson inkjet). One plus for Canon is the 3 year warranty.

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  5 років тому +1

      In very general terms, inkjets will most often outperform any color laser printer for photos. They work better with glossy papers and tend to give a better representation on varied types of paper because the ink blends better for smooth transitions. If you're looking for decent color prints for mass production and not gallery quality prints for artwork or display, then a color laserjet would probably be fine. In terms of quality, though, I haven't seen color prints off the two Canon printers you mentioned in person so it's hard to tell, without having a reference image, which performs the best of the three. Maybe if you find display models in the store you can print a test image from each and go from there!

      @@ReviewedByPhil I ended up buying both the M479 and the M281 so I could try them both out. For black text, they both do the same thing. But for color photo prints, I found the M281 had better looking colors (color matching) than the M479 (looks dull). Also the m281 is silent when not printing, but the M479 has a loud fan that stays on (even when not printing) until the unit goes into sleep mode. I'm also hearing a noticeable high voltage electrical transformer sound from the M479 when it prints that I don't hear from the M281. After a weeks use, I was liking the M281 more, until it starting to give an error saying it was out of paper when it wasn't. After 2 calls to HP and some troubleshooting, they said it would have to be replaced.

      @@fauguy23 Thanks for the follow up and additional comments on the printer's performance! I always find it interesting what other folks pick up on that I wouldn't have thought to mention. It's a great way to add to the conversation and gives everyone a bigger view of the whole picture. I'm sorry to hear that the M281 started giving you problems so quickly. Hopefully, it's a one-off issue and isn't indicative of a broader defect for that model, but it must be covered by the warranty still, if not by the place of purchase than at the very least a no-cost replacement from HP? I'd be curious to hear what their warranty claim experience is like.

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  4 роки тому +1

      While I haven't yet had to replace the toner cartridges, I did see that they are quite pricey. That said, you can save on the per page cost of the toner by buying the higher capacity 414X vs 414A HP cartridges (but you pay more, of course). I also saw that V4Ink has a compatible cartridge for this printer available at Amazon for about half the regular retail cost: geni.us/PdBNfm [Amazon Affiliate Product Link] and while I haven't tried this particular cartridge yet, I've purchased after market cartridges from this company before for other printers with decent results. The only thing is these aftermarket cartridges have no chip, so you'd have to turn off the cartridge policy and cartridge protection features to use them, or remove and reuse the chips from your old cartridges.

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  3 роки тому

      Yes, you can define customer paper sizes in the printer properties after the print dialog pops up when you click 'Print.' I know with labels sometimes there will be multiple labels on a sheet and most word processing software (like Microsoft Word) have the templates for different brands and label layouts built into the software. You'd need to select the brand and product number prior to filling out the template, then when you click print it should use the proper settings for that media type.

    I just purchased the Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M479fdw printer and your video help in many ways on how to set it up. The only thing that I would have liked if when you were saying where to go onto the internet to download the app, the photo's went by so fast it was difficult to try to follow where to click etc. Outside of that you did a wonderful job. I print a lot of letter and legal size documents so I love that the printer can determine which tray to pull it from. I did purchase the extra tray so I could have legal in one and letter in the other.
    The two questions I have that you might have an answer for, Almost 99% of my documents are printed in Black so why is my color toner going down if I'm only using the black?
    The other question, I was surprised that the top glass is only for the size of letter but not legal. I need to copy a legal size sheet, is there something I'm missing on how to do this? If I scan documents, will it scan full copies of the letter & legal? Sorry I haven't tried scanning yet but thought I'd ask you. KS from Oregon

    • @ReviewedByPhil
      @ReviewedByPhil  4 роки тому

      Hm, the color toner could be used even for black and white prints, depending on your settings in the application sending the print job, for example Microsoft Word. The machine will usually print using color toner if the settings are set to color mode, even if the document looks black and white. Likewise, if you hit the color copy button, it'll print using the color cartridges (by mixing the colors to get black) regardless whether or not any other colors appear on the original. If you want to print using only the black toner, you should choose monochrome or black in the print/copy settings. You should also be able to set this as the default behavior.
      I haven't copied or scanned any legal size documents, but I believe if you use the automatic document feeder on top you can achieve this. After loading the document, text-side up in the top tray, tap the copy icon on the LCD. Then tap the gear icon in the bottom left to change the settings. There should be a size/paper setting where you can select "Legal size" from the dropdown. It would work the same way for scanning as well. As long as you select the correct paper size, you should be able to capture the whole document. Let me know if it works for you!

      @justme507 3 роки тому

      Hi, I found out how you can select 1200dpi for this machine. It works only with a computer... there you need Forst to download the HP printer drivers and the HP Scan software. Then start HP Scan on the computer, select one scan profile, or create a new one, then select as input the flatbed (NOT the ADF unit!!!), and under “more”, and Pictures, you will be now able to select 1200dpi as resolution... This is the only way. Good luck.

      @@ymjonline Hi, well yes, the ADF can only do 300dpi, but for a document this is more then enough… almost too much… If you want to scan a picture, then you need to use a computer and the flatbed scan, in this case you can scan with up to 1200 dpi.
