How to use your iPhone as a microphone on your Mac (or PC) for recording your voice

- UPDATE: If you can't find "iOS Device Browser" you may have a newer version of MacOS. Look for your iPhone in the list of Audio Devices of the main "Audio Midi Setup" window. There should be a button to enable it there. Here's a link if you get lost:

This is a short tutorial on how to use the mic on your iPhone as a somewhat professional sounding microphone on MacOS. Windows users will need to use a 3.5mm cable to route the sound from the headphone jack to the Line In on your computer.
• You'll need an app that passes the audio from the mic to the phone's system output.

so this says for pc and mac but only shows mac with no instructions for pc, i am lost. this video does not help with that even though it says it does,

Instead of airplane mode you can use the do not disturb, which is the moon.

The first time I did it my phone was able to enable, but when I do it now my phone won't enable, it just stays with a loading symbol on enable. Help plz!

"Show IOS Device Browser" is not showing as an option for me
just go to the bottom of the things on the left of the audio midi setup and click enable!

U dont have to have it. I got the free version. Then I used a cord with headphone jack on both sides i plugged that in and the mic worked.
my device refuses to show up even when i followed the other tutuorial you linked the midi setup jut doesnt show my phone and there is no option to show ios device browser only network browser

Hi, I have had no success with this app on my PC Windows 10. I purchase the app for th bluetooth facility after not being able to feed in via the cable & Line Input on my computer (no idea why that does not work .. the PC cannot see a mic in the Line Input). But neither did the blue tooth work... my PC simply does not see it!! Any help would be appreciated but I'm gaining the feeling this is an all iSO facility (as demonstrated). I even tried a lightning cable to USB connection to the PC with no connection seen / made. I would really love this to work.

You forgot to mention how you have to turn on the microphone on the app in order for it to work, but otherwise good tutorial. There are a LOT of HORRIBLE tutorials out there on how to do this, but this one was good.

hey I was wondering, for laptops with only one combined headphone + microphone jack, how do you manage to listen to the music while recording your voice at once? do you use an audio splitter?

Does the iPhone have to be connected by USB or will this work using Bluetooth?
It doesn't appear to be possible. iPhone only shows up as a sound input device in sound preferences when it is connected via USB cable.

Thank you for sharing. Great video. A quick query. Could we use iPhone as an external microphone for the wireless, blue tooth speakers such as Bose Soundlink +II ? Like in a class room. The teacher utilises the microphone that comes with the iPhone as a wireless lapel microphone and the students can listen to the amplified broadcast via the bluetooth speakers.

What version of MacOS are you running? As far as I know, it's a feature available in Mac 10.11.1 or higher; iOS 9 or higher is also needed on your iOS device.

I would need someone to explain why we can’t use iPhone as a USB mic for PC while using JUST the USB and not the AUX/headphone jack... I refuse to believe that it’s impossible to do so without using the headphone jack nor connecting the phone via Bluetooth or WiFi....

good one. i use voice recorder pro app for 48000khz hq sound on iphone (better even than the micke itself on the device), record as i watch my video to make narrative and then send the file from my camera roll to the cvideo editor and insert it. saves the 5$ for boris app. well done to the developers in front of that. but in truth voice recorder pro for podcast recordingss with thumbnails in mp4 for youtube is the nest sound i ever got including a yeti studio, and its an iPhone. Use earbuds as the microphone has background noiuce cancelling and speak into front of phone not bottom
