  • I bought this Bachmann Amtrak F40PH a while back and although it ran well upon testing, it certainly had remove for improvement. It was surprising clean on the inside but completely dry of oil. After doing some basic maintenance it ran much better.

    Amtrak and Via also operated a train between Chicago and Toronto, the "International," which used a mixture of Amtrak and Via equipment in each consist, so your consist actually is somewhat realistic. The service ended in the early 2000's. I'm hoping to get a Via F40PH-2D and some coaches to model that train but bring it into the 2010's. My plan is to model Chicago's South Side in the 2010 decade.

    Well, Harrison, if those passengers were on a tight time schedule, they're going to be late, no thanks to Amtrak. You did your part - - definately runs better. "So shines a good deed in a weary world."

Also explaining to me the differences between the Bachmann vs. LifeLike, although Tyco also had that same style of motor too, didn’t it ??? Dude I’ve been looking at your thumb ! I don’t know what you did with it, if you hit your thumb with your hammer ??? Little Brother,

    Remember the 2-6-2 prairie I have. Its probably same age as this locomotive . Bachmann has no spare parts for steamers etc that is what they told me. My fph40 thats a lifelike is exactly thr same as this besides plastic rear wheels. Providing the front wheels shiny it runs great.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  4 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately Bachmann locomotives have not withstood the tests of time. Lifelike made locomotives that had less features (4 wheel pickup instead of 8 and plastic drive wheels) but they made minor design changes which have allowed them to last longer, mainly they didn't pressure fit Nylon around pieces of metal which has caused Bachmann models to develop cracks over the years.

    I took two of those pancake motors one time, and made a Life Like GP38 frame so it could receive one on each end. It ran like you wouldn't believe, as it had twice the horsepower. I added weight and it didn't need traction tires afterwards.

    Hello harrison i have a question im gonna be cleaning and lubicating my bachmann santa fe emd f9 no 307 but the problem is if the screws are rusty can you use sandpaper for it or not? Plus what lubicant do i need to use because i use bachmann light gear oil. Also that motor is also used for lionel ho locomotives from 1974-1977 because i recently got a lionel chessie gp9 with the chassis similar to bachmann.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  4 роки тому

      If you are having trouble getting the screws out because of rust, the slightest amount of WD-40 will help. If all you're trying to do is remove rust of the screws, just drop them into some vinegar and the acid will remove the rust. For lubricant, all you need is a thin oil. I usually use labelle 102 for this.

    • @MattKonsol

    Basic home maintenance; do you have a tutorial on adding decoders to older non-DCC N-scale locomotives? I have a few, and am not getting my questions answered on the interweb. Example - an Atlas U25B, LED head & tail lights but no advice on how to hook them up to the leads on a (for example) DZ126 or similar. You seem like someone who has been there. There are 3 solder pads on each tiny LED board; do I solder to them or remove the pads first?

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  4 роки тому +1

      I've never installed DCC on an N scale locomotive but unless it's DCC ready, a common rule of thumb is to isolate everything. The decoder acts as a gateway for power so wires that would connect from the motor to different areas of the locomotive must all be detoured through the decoder. DC Power source-Motor DCC Power source-decoder-motor. The same process is done for lighting. If you want to send an email to scrumptiousmodeltrains@gmail.com to send me some photos of what you're trying to do, I would be happy to try and help.

      @@SMTMainline - I'm gradually finding what I want; too many UA-cam "how-to" videos stop the camera right at the point where they should show or tell "how to." Even searching the hobby shops, the common search words often don't exist on the parts they have in stock! Frustrating, but I'm getting there. Thanks to your videos, they are helping me understand the ones that don't help. Believe it or don't, the F40PH video helped me with clues to installing decoders. Maybe the best thing is building my confidence to disassembling a loco, instead of being afraid to dig into it.

    I have an old Lionel, that looks just like that 3 pole motor and all . I need to know about getting replacement wheel sets with axles as they are all crooked. Any idea where? It would be a plus if I could add pickups to the motorized wheels like that one has, as one truck is not motorized and the motorized wheels have yucky rubber wheels that I want to eliminate.
