I actually have one of these that a buddy of mine repainted into the locomotive from Back to the Future Part III and modified to accept a modern Bachmann motor, runs very quietly and VERY smoothly now. And the best part is that since the new motor's much more compact, he was able to add cab detail to it. Hope to see this appear more on your channel, Sierra Railway #3 is a national treasure and a Hollywood legend, and I feel every American/Canadian layout needs a model of her to truly feel complete!
Dude! After watching some of your videos, you inspired me to try to repair an old Tyco / Mantua General 4-4-0 that stopped running awhile ago. I took it apart, cleaned it (it was not very dirty), and lubed it up. Also cleaned out the slots between the commutators on the open 3-pole motor. The engine was never a great runner *before*, it made a lot of noise, and did not like to start up much before the V = 9 and the A = 0.5. Afterward - WOW. It runs better than new, quiet, smooth, linear speed increase as V and A go up, and it now it never draws more than 0.3 amp. Thank you so much!!!! You inspire confidence! - Bruce J. in California.
Great looking steamer. Good job getting it running again on your layout. Since your layout is mostly modern era, you can use this steamer as a vintage excursion tourist railroad during the summer and maybe as a Thanksgiving and Christmas season special run. All you need are some older passenger cars to make your excursion train!
Had to pause. That mini tree brought back a memory to 1993. I was in elementary school and they had a book sale at the school. They also sold cookies and small toys and i bought a tree just like that. But it had small wood decorations i hand painted. I gave that tree to my mom in 1993. Now 29 years later she still sets it up. I want to get a Z scale train to put around it. Lol
Heavens......hope you gave that poor thing a "bath" with some warm soap and water.....Nice detailed unit... What I love about those old "Mantua's" was that most of them were diecast...and make good "pullers"...... Interestingly....unless the motor is burnt....with a bit of serious cleaning,( and I mean wheels, gears, commutator, brushes, etc.) re-oiling, and re-greasing....odds are you can get it to run again. If you want success with ANY engine.....have the largest/ widest curves you can place in your layout.....the less tight....the more success and trouble-free derailing issues.....
The Problem I had with that type of Locomotive was that the back weels doesn’t have sufficient paralel movement, so derailment always occurs on 18” curves.
That model is of an actual Rogers Locomotive Co. 4-6-0. I saw the real one in the train museum in Jamestown California. It's an impressive locomotive to see in person.
I paid US$ 19.95 new about 1970 for mine sitting in a box in my basement, so you saved a lot of money by choosing to be born 30 years later. I used to do foreign banknote trading so the value of money based on different factors still interests me and I checked the inflated value of that 1970 $19.95 today and it would be $134.50. Crazy.
Why don’t you get a running test track where the loco can be tested without moving. All wheels a motor actions can be observed even in a particularly dismembered condition
You may want to check the wheel set and bearing under cab they are some times worn out because it is set back on frame, that will cause derail in reverse, hope this helps.
Few of the ones i have trouble with are only with finding parts. Like my lionel ho UP f body unit and gt 5511. Those plastic bottom part that hold wheels in the trucks. People try to pull the off and break them. When you need a flathead screw driver to remove them.
I would also recommend cleaning the armature of the motor and lubricating the bushings on both ends of the motor as well. I've got a Mantua 0-4-0 I picked up for nothing and with cleaning the motor, it's my second best running steam engine I own! Even better than my Rivarossi/AHM Berkshire! Clean that motor and it should creep like a champion!
I love Mantua steam engines. I need to get myself another two at the least but my problem is I model the Nickel Plate Road and I don't believe they made anything like what the nkp used past having to modify a pacific to resemble an L1 Hudson.
Very nice CP Loco and tender, Harrison, as well as the festive Christmas Tree. You should make a Christmas consist for the next live stream with that steamer. Reaching 4.5K subscribers and only a week into December - - awesome. Surprised you're not getting more subscriber mail at your PO Box. In the immortal words of SMT Mainline, "Well Folks," let's stuff the PO Box with Christmas greetings. 🎄🎄🎄
Hey, there, SMT. Kind of a weird question to ask, but I figured this might be the right place to do so. I bought an old Athearn N&W Y6B a year or so ago, and tried to restore it, but I've kind of realized I don't really know what I'm doing exactly, so I kind of stopped at one point, before I end up doing any kind of serious damage. Would it be possible to maybe ship it to you at some point for a possible restoration attempt? You seem to know a *lot* about model train restoration, and to be honest, not many shops anymore handle restoration like that, so I think, if anything, someone like you would be my best bet!
These weren't perfectly designed. They had plastic rings between the bearings in the motor and since the locomotive is almost always going forward there is more stress on one, causing it to wear out faster.
SMT - Do you typically oil the armature bearings on that style of motor? In Classic Trains magazine, they have a photo with a couple of tall switch stands, like the one on your curved switch track. They call it a " High Banner " switch stand.
I oiled the bearings off camera, it's not the most important spot but it certainly improves performance. I will have to see what the High Banner switch stand is all about.
You need a locomotive cradle. You brutally handled that locomotive. You also should get a magnetic screw holder for your screws when you take it apart.
Awesome restoration vid and mail vid. Btw let me ask you a curious question are you getting more trains for Christmas or something? For Christmas you might ask I’m getting a Union Pacific centennial with dcc and sound. If you ask the engine is a emd dda40x.
So Can I send you a train that I bought was in Great condition and it comes wheel attached but not how it should be rattling in my engine and it don’t work nor does it move?

Very good, glad you got it back to running condition, always good to see a late 1960's steamer still running.

That engine is based off of Sierra Railroad number 3 which is a Rogers 4-6-0 ten wheeler built in 1891.
I have one in the Baltimore and Ohio paint scheme.

Hey! I got a mention on the SMT channel! Thanks. Nice restore on the Tyco. Looks like a good running train.
Another engine brought back to life. Outstanding!
This is one of my favorite HO steam locomotives. Tyco got a little lazy on the tenders with wood loads and fill to model the water cap.
Seeing that tree without any train under it causes me pain
I’m getting Vietnam flashbacks not seeing the polar express under it
It can't be seen on video but that table I put it on has a track inside
That was the same exact problem with my tyco mantua 0-4-0 shifter you helped me fix
The Problem I had with that type of Locomotive was that the back weels doesn’t have sufficient paralel movement, so derailment always occurs on 18” curves.
Mine has the same issue with curves, only thing I could say is slow down whilst turning.
Awesome! A steam locomotive restoration! Great job with this one!
Also, love your little tree. 😂

Man that's a great looking old engine a lot of character in it's design
Great video SMT. One thing for other people rule of thumb do not yous too much oil because I learned it the hard way there will be a lot of week slip.
Just a thin slick, nothing more is what I usually tell people
Yes just a thin slick
I have a loco similar to this there's a spring and collar on the screw for the pilot wheels
You may want to check the wheel set and bearing under cab they are some times worn out because it is set back on frame, that will cause derail in reverse, hope this helps.
I have 3 of those. 1 converted to DCC. Cute little locos.
Few of the ones i have trouble with are only with finding parts. Like my lionel ho UP f body unit and gt 5511. Those plastic bottom part that hold wheels in the trucks. People try to pull the off and break them. When you need a flathead screw driver to remove them.
Turn it into a Christmas train! (Like your Centennial Canadiana)
I like your restorations
I see your budget has increased for set design. That’s great. Festive. I’m hoping to see some elf ears next video. Santa hat?
Derailing is not a hobby, it’s a compassion
Looks like the Engine from Back to the Future 3
It is it's just painted up to look like in Canadian Pacific locomotive
It is the same locomotive.

What a beautiful locomotive!
SMT I picked up a mehano GG-1 for 20 bucks. It works quite well. it has odd couplers, I cant quite id them.
Another thing to consider is cleaning the commentator on the motor. Carbon from the brushes can build up on it and cause the motor to stall out.
man. I should open a PO box! love your videos, keep up the good work man!
You Do Amazing Man, I Cant Even Do This, If I Could Fix Anything, It Would Have To Be A Real Steam Locomotive That I Built

That would be great to turn into the BTTF engine!
Beautiful
Try looking for a 482 mountain type steam engine from the Frisco railway.
Do you have vids of running oguage locos thanks. Beautiful loco
WHAT? 5 BUCKS? NO WAY! Where can I find such cheap trains, SMT?
Hey, there, SMT. Kind of a weird question to ask, but I figured this might be the right place to do so.

10 wheeler.nice
Nice job. Why does reverse always seem to go smoother than forward sometimes

How are you going to restore the chipped paint in some areas?
I would also make the wheels black. the red sticks out a bit much.
I'm rebuilding one of these. I got the hardest part done, but I'm having trouble connecting the headlight wire to the motor. Any tips or suggestions?
Mine has a similar problem, but the tender trucks can sometimes be very hot. Any way of fixing that? Otherwise this was a big help for me.
What Railroad line had the 4-6-0?
This loco can be digitalized?
You need a locomotive cradle. You brutally handled that locomotive. You also should get a magnetic screw holder for your screws when you take it apart.
I have one

I think I'm gonna ask for a Scale Trains Dash-9
Cool I think it’ll be your first scale trains engine isn’t it once you get it?
I recently got one for Christmas and it keeps derailing and doesn’t run that smooth. Got any advice?
Contacts need work. Also fixed wheel base too long for your curves
How many 4-6-0 do you have? or do you prefer the 060 instead.
Seem like you always forget to take the tender off first lol
I see you got a Christmas tree for nerf cat
Yep, your boi Nerf-Cat got an X-Mas tree.
Hang Nerf darts on the tree
2 US dollars are worth 2.68 Canadian dollars apparently
It looks like the sierra railway N.3
It may be the same model of locomotive.
Where can i buy one of those?
Hey smt do you have a small steam locomotive shunter I could buy please
So Can I send you a train that I bought was in Great condition and it comes wheel attached but not how it should be rattling in my engine and it don’t work nor does it move?
can u run this locomotive in ur next live stream please
Sure

I think I derailed on the curve because the pilot truck was on backwards. I had the same problem with my tyco 4-6-0 till I turned that truck around
Smt are you going to stream tonight?
Can't, I'm headed to an event.
Hi
Imagine getting 100$ in America
That’s like worth a billion dollars in Canada
