Great video. I'm new to quail, with 5 hatches & 100 birds on my resume. Two observations: 1)My rare cases of "splayed leg" were chicks that hatched after a hatch window of 12-18hr after the first chick hatched; if slippery floors were the cause, there'd be a much higher number of splayed legs in 120 eggs. 2)16g eggs barely fit in my quail rails; I select 14-16g eggs for incubation, period. Maybe other quail rail designs allow for bigger eggs, but mine are limited to a maximum 16g. Thanks for all your hard work, Terry! I've learned a tremendous amount from your videos. Can't thank you enough!
I’m on day 2 of incubating my hatching eggs; I’m really glad I found your channel. There’s a good chance that I’m gonna binge most of you videos! I am so excited!
great information. we've been having horrible hatch rates lately. and also a lot of splayed legs and wry necks. we'll start following these instructions and see what happens! Thanks for sharing!
Wow I have learned so much watching your videos from you cage review to your incubating tips and I am getting ready to incubate some quail eggs on my channel. Thanks for the info.
thank you so much for this details. I just had 30 eggs with a really bad hatch rate, well 2 hatched and they didnt make it either. I used a new incubator and the temperature after the second week dropped and i couldnt get it proper up again. thats now the second incubator i tried, with the initial smaller one i had some success. I will follow your guidelines and hope to have soon better results !
Hello thank you for the great information. I ordered my egg and just started my farm . Is it ok if it moister goes down to 35% and comes back to 50%? And also I order my eggs a while ago they were through low temperatures 40F, will they be ok?
With the circulation fans and the forced air tunnel at the bottom of the incubator I hope there is no stagnant air. The only holes are the ventilation holes on the top and sides.
when hatching my last 13 eggs from my quail 2 were infertile 1 died late maybe the humidity was to high as i work late so i have to add enough water if i'm not there. 10 Were great hatches but i do notice while then they hatch they roll around alot would the surface of the tray the eggs are on be to hard causing injuries? i was thinking of putting something to stop them fro hurting themselves.?
On my 4th day incubation my thermostat censor fell into water unfortunately. So light dint cut off . When I opened to rotate the eggs inside its very hot and egg also very hot. Does it affect the eggs?
Thank you so much. This is so helpful. Is there an organization keeping track of breeders who are NPIP certified? I am in Southern California and I am not finding any.
You said double yolk will not hatch. We had one hatch. And our twins did good for about 2 1/2 weeks. Then one passed. But the other one is going strong at 4 weeks
You can open during lockdown as long as none of the eggs have pipped. Just be quick about it so the humidity levels don't drop too much. Try not to disturb the eggs as the chick are positioning themselves for the hatch.
Hi there how are you? I have some bob white (Georgia Giants) and is been 25 days in the incubator I have my temperature at 95.5 and the humidity 57%to 65% and in the last 2 days I have some eggs with small holes and no hatching yet how long should I be holding the eggs?
My last hatch was absolutely horrific. Only 50% of the fertile eggs hatched, fully developed but failed to hatch. Overall only a 38% hatch rate!!! The cause: bacteria. My incubator was bought second hand (used), I bleached it but not well enough. When I opened the incubator it smelled like a rotting carcass (sorry to be graphic). I have since researched that a 10% solution bleach requires 100% contact for 10 minutes to fully disinfect. After that disaster of a hatch, I soaked my incubator for 3 hours and now on day 10 the incubator has no odor whatsoever. Once the hatch is complete I will post the results on your FB page to help educate others. Hygiene is of utmost importance.
I had a really bad hatch on my second lot of eggs and discovered my temperatures were too cold by almost 3°C. Unfortunate but I'll never make that mistake again.
I get them once in a while with my younger hens and it's probably due to them just getting their egg laying "factory" working. It usually will fix itself, if it continues I would look at calcium levels.
Can someone help me find the video where he puts a puppy pad in the incubator for hatching. My quail eggs go into lockdown next week and I need to line my incubator I think I saw that here
I don't use puppy pads, I line the incubator with a drawer liner that you can get at Walmart in the housewares dept. Works perfect and it is reusable. Hope this helps.
Disagree. Your list of reasons is incomplete? Incubator cleanliness might be an important factor. I had every single item on your list addressed and I was lucky to get a 50% hatch rate. My quail kept dying around lockdown time. Never figured it out. Tried everything. I assumed my Styrofoam incubator couldn't be properly cleaned.
My first attempt at hatching was unsuccessful. I collected 15 eggs from my breeders. 3:1 females to males. After 10 days I candled the eggs and removed 5 clear ones. The other ten I turned by hand 2x a day. Day 15 lockdown. By day 21 nothing hatched. I opened all eggs. 10 dead chicks at various stages of development. 2 chicks fully grown and formed but didn't hatch. What caused such a variation of embryo development and mortality?
Presuming your breeding stock is healthy, It sounds to me like either an issue with your incubator (maybe temp fluctuations) or a low humidity issue. Whenever you have a hatch with a lot of egg mortality I always look for something like an equipment failure. When you have issues with lots of infertile eggs but get a decent hatch rate then look to the birds or setup being the issue.
Great video. I think I may have to low temperature in my homemade incubator, every time I have a lot of fully (or almost fully) developed chicks they didn't hatch/pip. Usually, they start to hatch over 24 hours later. What is the range of temperature eggs will still hatch but with a higher mortality rate? I bought thermometer suppose to be calibrated and it looks like I had 98F - is it possible they hatch when incubated 98F?
Also don't the hatched chicks that are running around during lockdown disturb the unhatched eggs seeing that they move them constantly? This is why I'm torn between the advise not to open the incubator and wanting to get them out so as not to disturb the rest of the eggs.
I haven't had any issue with earlier chicks disturbing the eggs that haven't hatch. I usually pull the first chicks out after 24 hour or once they have dried off and are nice a fluffy. I've also never had any issues with opening the incubator, but I will aways look for pipped eggs before I do. If I see pipped eggs I usually will wait until they've hatched then I'll quickly remove the dried birds.
Your videos are going to be the reason why so many are successful with raising quail! Keep up the great work and keep this great information flowing!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the clear information! I'm new to quail and I'm expecting the eggs soon, so I'm absorbing as much info as i can!

Hello terry,

Looking at the last point in the video, what do I do if the first few chicks that hatch move/push the other eggs and they go into a malposition?
Can we get a demonstration on how to properly turn the eggs during incubation and lockdown?

Do more videos plis , they are so interesting, and you lern a lot
I may have missed this, but when is the right time to candle the eggs for viability? or should anyone ever float test eggs, and when?
Thanks

Hi Terry what supplements do you use, ie multi vits in water?
I use Durvet vitamin and electrolyte concentrate. Available on Amazon here: amzn.to/3bpxctV

How old do males need to be before they are considered as old bird's?
Thanks for your time
Wow great info thank you so much
Can anyone recommend a good candle that’s good for quail eggs.
Do you feed the failed eggs back to the quail?
You said double yolk will not hatch. We had one hatch. And our twins did good for about 2 1/2 weeks. Then one passed. But the other one is going strong at 4 weeks
Can you make a tour and another daily routine
How true is it that you can't open your incubator during lockdown and if so how long before you can?
You can open during lockdown as long as none of the eggs have pipped. Just be quick about it so the humidity levels don't drop too much. Try not to disturb the eggs as the chick are positioning themselves for the hatch.
What kind of light are you using. I have seriously strong flashlights, but cant candle
It's just a cheapo egg candler, single LED. I usually just use the flashlight on my phone, works like a charm.
If you are having a problem seeing the embryo, try a Brinsea ovascope. Takes the anxiety out of candling
This is miracle advice!
Hello sir
Iam from indonesia🖐
May i ask when the egg turning?
do you think 2 males to 4 or 5 females is to much for the hens?
Yea it should be 1:4 or 5

The eggs should start hatching within 24 hours of pipping. They're probably just resting up for the big escape.
Good 👍

Hiya Terry! Was wondering about painting and/or clear coating my new cages for easier cleaning and aesthetics?
Painting or clear coating will help with easier cleaning. Also, is a good way to deter pest like mites/lice. Thanks for the comment!
I had a really bad hatch on my second lot of eggs and discovered my temperatures were too cold by almost 3°C. Unfortunate but I'll never make that mistake again.

I disagree. I think it was poor air exchange. You suffocated your quail in this styrofoam. There mist be proper air flow.
