I use eBay for my eggs I usually get 72 eggs a time and get around 65-70% hatch rate 2 weeks after my first batch had matured I took 15 eggs in to the incubator and got 12 out so males are doing a good job this early out of those 12 had 10 females 😄
And I have 20 females to 3 males and my hatch rate is pretty good I did try a fourth but the current 3 males refused to leave him alone once he tried to mount the females so didn’t go well and all my males did was bully him and no doing they’re jobs fertilising so seems I can’t add more males 😅

Wanted to add some anecdotal evidence to the pile for those plastic containers, I ordered 36 eggs and did the standard procedure which normally yields a 80-90% hatch rate. Only 3 hatched, then I found this video to try and figure out what could have happened... wish I had found it sooner lol Don't buy eggs shipped in the plastic cartons, Terry is not kidding around when he says the eggs won't hatch.
@@circa134 . Yes. I choose the freshest ones based on the expiration date. They won’t all be fertile and I haven’t had success with some brands. The ones that come from Canada didn’t hatch at all. Sometimes only one will hatch out of a pkg of 15 eggs. And I had 9 hatch once out of a pkg that size. It’s hit or miss.
I've hatched chicken eggs that had been in the fridge for a week. I had a dozen and 10 hatched. I let them come up to room temp and completely dry before I put them in the incubator. Hatch rate was better than I expected!
Just got my quail eggs from Kansas City quail farm this will be my second hatch ever. Hatch day is around October 28th. I’ll post an update then. Wish I came across your video sooner, my first hatch came off amazon and were shipped in those plastic containers, 14 out of 42 hatched. Not very good. Great video! Thanks for the tips!
Well it’s the 28th and I have over 40 quail that have hatched so far, maybe more! It’s hard to count. I’m hoping for 60 that would put me at the 50% rate!
@@brandonweller9536 Congrats! If today is day 17 then you still have a very good chance of getting more to hatch out through day 19 & 20. Keep us updated!
Great video Terry ! I just had a hatch of coturnix chicks 4 days ago, hatched 24 out of 42 set. That's a 57% hatch rate on shipped eggs, I was pleased. I followed the exact procedures you described in this video and things went well. My only issue was that there was temperature fluctuation in my incubator, Genesis Hovabator 1588. It's 15 years old so I may buy or build a new one. I used 4 thermometers, 1 calibrated analog and 3 digital to monitor temps. Looking forward to setting eggs from my own quail once they're old enough. What kind of hatch rate is reasonable to expect with eggs from my own quail in a breeding group of 1 roo to 4 hens? Thanks for another helpful video, keep 'em coming my friend.
Congrats on the new hatch! As long as the temperatures don't fluctuate too much you should be fine, coturnix eggs are pretty forgiving and can handle minor temperature changes as long as they don't get too cold or too hot. I keep a 1 to 4 ratio and regularly get 80 - 90 percent hatch rates out of my established birds. Young birds and first timers usually have lower hatch rates, but give them some time and they will eventually get it right. Good luck on your upcoming breeding group! Thanks for being part of the channel.
@@BigDmike24 that’s probably not too bad considering all tgat movement and temperature fluctuations they go thru... I’m amazed that most I get aren’t broken considering how beat up the boxs get in shipment.
I get mine from Myshire too. 😁 I had a terrible hatch rate. It was completely my fault. Zach was so helpful even though it was outside of normal business hours.
I'm hatching my personal quail eggs and I'm at 15/3 83% I lost 3, 2 pipped and closed I think, 1 was deformed. Also, I don't get my lockdown incubator in time and because of that, I had to reorganize and ended up with multiple hatching in the turner.
Great video! I appreciate your knowledge. I just started to raise quails and chukars. What kind of digital hygrometer thermometer you recommend for an incubator? Thank you.
Thanks for your videos and advice. Are very helpful. I have a question. If I want to add roosters to my hens, how soon can I expect fertilized eggs after mating them? how many days should i wait?
Yes you can have the humidity too high. During incubation you want the humidity between 35 - 50%. And then bump it up to 65 - 70% during lockdown. If the humidity is too high while incubating the egg will absorb too much moisture causing a reduced air cell size, and when the chick pips the inner membrane there isn't enough air and they suffocate.
Im absolutely positive the post office mistreated my eggs the whole way. When I picked my eggs up, the lady that handed them to me just kind of tossed them up on the counter. Tomorrow is hatch day so we shall see

I’m only day 2 of incubation but we’ll see. I have hope but my faith is low ( thankfully I got my eggs from the same farm as this gentleman. They package them really great !
I am a small quail keeper. mostly for my own use. have successfully hatched and raised quail before. Right now I have 13 quail (3/10 ratio) Something I have always done, but don't know if it's needed is when storing the eggs for incubation, I have always put them in the egg turner with the cover off and turner on. Then, when I am ready to start, I just put the cover on and turn on the incubator. I have a Farm Innovations incubator. Styrofoam, from Tractor Supply. I also just use the chicken rails that came with it. I'm not going to bother getting the quail rails until I can justify a 120 bird hatch. What are your thoughts about the way I store hatching eggs?
I have a question. If you have eggs that are a week apart, how does the humidity work? Cause when the one eggs are supposed to be at 40-55% when turning and the ones at lock down are supposed to be at 65% humidity?
Hi there when you say it should be 1 rooster to 23 or 4 hens. Do you mean they have to be caged as a group on their own. Or can you for example, have 10 roosters to about 40 hens. Same ratio but all put together in one cage. So any rooster can bonk any 3 or 4 hens he wants to? I’ve jotted loads of info down. Cheers 👍👍👍👍
Hello. If you had ONLY two choices of 99 degrees Fahrenheit OR 100 degrees Fahrenheit on your forced air incubator which would you choose for Mandarin duck eggs?
I've never incubated duck eggs before so I'm not sure what the optimal temp is. But, if you set the regulator to 99 the incubator temps will average 99.5, if set to 100 they will average 100.7 inside the incubator. Hope this helps.
Can you recommend a secondary digital hygrometer/temperature gauge please? I have discovered GQF quail rails are too small and not working well. Are the little giant racks & turner a good fit? From the video it looks like you have Little giant turner/rails and the eggs are fitting in nicely. Thanks
Do you let the rooster live with the hens? I have two males/six females and live in a large rabbit cage. I've kept them separate but I want to breed them.
I have 10 hens and 1 rooster currently in my 6x3 cage. Im concerned about the roosters fighting if I add another. Do you think thats enough room to safely add another rooster? Only 3 eggs out of 14 were fertile but I don't want them fighting and ending up hurting each other, or worse 😳
Is it a problem for the chicks still in the egg when hatched chicks are fumbling around jostling those guys? If I opened up the unhatched eggs and many of them had zero development does that mean unfertilized? The folks who got eggs from those hens before us had 100% hatch rate. Ours was miserable. 😕Two had developed quite a bit. One almost all the way and should have hatched. Didn't even pip.
Hello Hbug13, no it's not a problem, it happens, and I have never seen any problems with chicks hatching because of this. If you are concerned, you can put drawer liner material in hatching tray to kind of dampen rolling effect, this will also help prevent splay leg. Yes, if there was absolutely no development of the egg, then most likely it was infertile. Were they fresh eggs? And it does happen that a chick will fully develop and fail to hatch. Sometimes the chick uses up all the air from the air cell and is too weak to pip the shell and they end up suffocating inside the egg. Good luck with your next hatch and thanks for commenting!
No you shouldn't have any problems. You could probably get away with doing a dry hatch by not adding any water to the incubator during the first 14 days and then just a small amount for lockdown. Thanks for commenting.
