- Hello, coffee drinkers! Are you allowed to continue drinking coffee/caffeine after a concussion? In this video, Dr. Mark breaks down what the research says about caffeine after a concussion or sports concussion. While coffee has loads of research coming out about its benefits, you may want to pause for a moment after an mTBI/concussion.

Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Great information. I'm having a hard time nailing down information regarding how long to avoid alcohol consumption. For example, if it's been 3 weeks since your accident and you no longer are experiencing symptoms, is it safe to have a couple of drinks...
not a doctor and you should prob check in with your doctor to clear you but generally if you’ve experienced no symptoms for a few days you can try drinking again
I generally tell folks to avoid alcohol for 2-4 weeks after their injury. In general, we'd like to avoid alcohol for our health independent of concussion recovery. Data shows that more than 2 drinks/week we start to see negative health effects. At the very least, I'd say no more than 5 drinks per week (and not all on the same day - that's binge drinking, and has it's own problems).
@drmarkheisig My doc ended up giving me the same advice. Give it at least a solid month from accident and at least a few days to a week of no symptoms. Use moderation and if symptoms return after having a couple beers, no more beers for another month, then try again if that's your thing. Always responsibly and with moderation.
Thank you very much, Doctor. Now I can have a cup of coffee with my wife without fear of further injuring my brain. But personally I prefer yerba mate. Since it contains caffeine too, is all the above said right for mate as well?
Yep! Enjoy your coffee time with your wife.
I can’t drink coffee or alcohol since my concussion
Yeah, there are a lot of folks that say that. I'm not sure what to make of it based on the data we have.
If people have PCS shouldnt it be avoided in case dysautonomia is a factor for PCS and coffee would further drive up the sympathetic nervius system response?
This depends highly on individual tolerance. Chronic caffeine consumers don't appear to have the same adrenaline and cortisol spikes as "naive" users. So, really, if your drinking normal doses (100-300mg/day) without symptoms, then you're likely okay.
@@drmarkheisig Thank you for the response and AWESOME UA-cam channel!! Really appreciate you providing help to many 🙏🙏
Please say no
Luckily, only in the acute phases. ☕
I'm still in an acute phase q8 years later. Caffeine makes me feel very very strange. Love your channel! Lexi

You're right (kind of). After the first 24-48hrs, you're okay. In the first 24-48hrs, you MAY want to avoid caffeine.
